Story: The Ghost of Christmas Always
Author: [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan
Rating: Teen
Word count: 5087
Author's summary: Maria and Sarah Jane manage to spend Christmases together, despite the distance between them. Implied Maria/SJS crushing.
Characters/Pairings: SJS, Maria, Luke, Clyde
Warnings: Character death (but not a bad sort of character death)

Recced because: A completely unseasonal rec, but I don't care. This is a wonderful fic, jumping forward through a selection of Christmases over thirty years to show the SJA gang's futures through Maria's point of view. The characterisation is deftly handled, making it feel completely canonical to me, to be honest (while YMMV about the existence of Maria's crush, I'm completely convinced of it, so).

What I particularly love about it, though, is the way that with a few carefully chosen descriptions, [livejournal.com profile] minerva_fan captures the essential feel of not only SJA ("Luke has never seen fit to improve on Sarah Jane's somewhat anachronistic method of hiding the key. It's as if the mere act of living like nobody would find a key under a plant will somehow make it true."), but some wildly different parts of canon that Sarah's been involved in as well, and makes it all seem part of a seamless whole. Which, of course, it is, from some very old school stuff about themagic of the TARDIS to the new school excesses of there being aliens every Christmas. Lovely stuff.

I thought I'd do a couple of slightly longer recs to finish off, for leisurely weekend reading. Here's the first:

Story: Five Times Liz Shaw and the Brigadier Saved the World
Author: vvj5/[livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 5592
Author's summary: Season 7 without the Doctor. Surprisingly, the world doesn't end.
Characters/Pairings: Liz/Brig
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a glorious AU, little snapshots of what might have happened if the Doctor hadn't turned up in Spearhead. Things don't change that much, but everything's that little bit more difficult and hard-won without him around (well, except in the case of Inferno, which becomes somewhat simpler!), but in the process Liz and the Brigadier become closer than they did in canon. The characterisation's done with a wonderful light touch even amongst the occasional grimness; take this exchange, for instance:

"If you need help, you may have as many of my men as you need -."

"I don’t need anyone to clutter up the room and break things, but when I do, I shall be sure to take you up on the offer."

What I find particularly interesting is the way [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook deals with the fall out of not having the Doctor present (you can see some of it in the quote, with Liz's attitude to the idea of helpers rather similar to the Doctor's initial attitude to her, but the most interesting one to me is the discussion at the end of the second chapter, which acts as a distorted mirror of the Doctor and Brig's falling out in the Silurians, but surprisingly it's the Brig whose arguments are closest to the Doctor's in the original version, because of the different experiences he has; it's a great bit of characterisation that undercuts a lot of fannish clichés).

Story: and then there was a giant squid
Author: [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1357
Author's summary: The Doctor plays cricket, Nyssa and Tegan go to the beach, and then there's a squid.
Characters/Pairings: Five, Nyssa/Tegan

Recced because: Funny and sweet, with everyone gorgeously in-character (Tegan gets lots of good lines, and there's a perfect Nyssa-ish moment that I shan't spoil). Declaration of interest: I received this lovely fic for [livejournal.com profile] femslash09.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: When the Lights Fade
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1329
Author's summary: There is a price to be paid for being the Rebel Queen and standing against a tyrant. post ep for the BFA "Live 34".
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Hex, Seven
Warnings: references to torture

Recced because: The author's summary describing this as a post-ep for "Live 34" (one of my favourite BFs, for the way it plays with the medium, but that's beside the point); it's a wonderful examination of this Team TARDIS and what they're willing to sacrifice for the greater good, and the different ways they look after each other in the aftermath. I'm particularly in love with what the Doctor does at the very end.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: Splinters
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word count: 344
Author's summary: Prompt: Nine/Jabe, gardening.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jabe
Warnings: Semi-explicit treesex.

Recced because: An utterly amazing exploration of one of my favourite pairings involving a one-off-character from new school. The imagery is brilliant, and it's shot through with a wistful sadness mixed with a strange sort of optimism that's absolutely lovely. (I have to confess to a slight bias here: this was written for a prompt I left on the kink meme.)
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: A Love for the Ages
Author: [livejournal.com profile] settiai
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 537
Author's summary: It was a story older than history.
Characters/Pairings: Myfanwy/TARDIS

Recced because: It really shouldn't be possible for a Myfanwy-POV fic to be this good, but this is brilliant. It sounds cracky (and the concept inevitably is) but the telling of the story plays itself straight and is actually rather heartbreaking. And as a bonus, it explains very neatly how Myfanwy ended up in the present day. Lovely stuff.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: no more working for a week or two
Author: [livejournal.com profile] shinyjenni
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 838
Author's Summary: The Doctor takes his companions on a lovely holiday. Meanwhile, Anji manages her finances and Fitz places an ill-advised bet.
Characters/Pairings: Eight, Fitz, Anji

Recced because: It's a wonderful bit of summery fluff showing one of my favourite Team TARDISes almost managing to have some down time. The sort of fic that leaves you with a big smile on your face when you've finished reading it.

Excerpt under the cut )

Title: Mistakes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] amaresu
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 588
Author's summary: Her first mistake was accepting a ride from Iris.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Iris Wildthyme
Warnings: None

Recced because: How can you resist a summary line (that's also the first line of the fic) like that? Iris is always a joy, and putting her together with Ace works very nicely for this little vignette. There's even a nice bit of offstage-Brax in there.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: Rude & Ginger: The Movie
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word count: 1236
Author's Summary: Donna meets the wrong Doctor. Or is it the *right* Doctor, boom-chikka?
Characters/Pairings: Six/Donna, Ten
Warnings: none

Recced because: nostalgia excels at snappy, snarky USTish dialogue and this pairing is the perfect context for it. All the voices (Six's verbosity in particular) are captured perfectly -- you can just hear the actors delivering each and every line -- and there are some wonderful meta jokes in there too.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: Flowers on Traken
Author: tromana
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 668
Author's Summary: Nyssa doesn’t like to remember; the scars can be too much to bear.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Five
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a beautiful examination of the angstiness in Nyssa's background that's often understated in canon, but with a nice note of optimism at the end.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: "Because I can do anything"
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 503
Author's Summary: Set at the end of Armageddon Factor. The Doctor holds in his hand the Key to Time. Will he use it?
Characters/Pairings: Four, Romana I
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a sublimely clever fic that ties old and new school canon together beautifully in a remarkably short span. With the simple but brilliant idea that holding the Key to Time, once assembled, gives the Doctor the ability to see the future (or possible futures, as there are hints at the various branches of non-telly canon), making his choice about whether to use the Key's power much more poignant in a way that resonates wonderfully with Romana's future (her departure in particular) and key new school moments like the confrontation with the Emperor in Parting and the Skasis Paradigm scene in School Reunion. A fantastic achievement.

Story: Making an Impression
Author: Rutan
Rating: Teen
Word count: 1540
Author's summary:
Characters/Pairings: Three/Liz, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings: BDSM, Non-con

Recced because: I don't buy the Doctor (even the supposedly authoritarian Three) as a top, particularly, but this fic sells it, particularly in the sexist milieu of the era when the show was made (other shows at the time were much, much worse than Who in this respect, though the fact that canon doesn't contain fail such as "Two spanks Zoe out of being a feminist after they restore a planet ruled by women to the Right Way of Doing Things" seems to me to have been more luck than judgement). But more than that it sells Liz's deliciously complicated response to the situation.

Story: Didn't Ask, Didn't Tell
Author: lithrael
Rating: Adult
Word count: 1131
Author's summary: Jamie and the Doctor enjoy themselves quite near a lot of UNIT personnel. Set during The Invasion.
Characters/Pairings: Two/Jamie, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sergeant Benton
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: It's short and sweet (and hot), but what I like most about this fic is the way that it nails the mischievousness of Two's characterisation and applies it to his sex life with Jamie. The Brig and Benton's little bits that top and tail it work very nicely too.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
(Sorry for the slightly delayed start in reccing! I've picked out seven stories for this week, one each from the era of each old school Doctor. Since I'm late in starting, I'll do two a day on the weekend to catch up.)

Story: Just Another Day
Author: vvj5 ([livejournal.com profile] lost_spook)
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1423
Author's summary: It's business as usual for Ian, Barbara, the Doctor and Vicki. You know, danger, imprisonment, escape...
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, One, Vicki
Warnings: None

Recced because: The recent [livejournal.com profile] tardis_gen ficathon produced loads of great fic, but this is one of my favourites. It works as both a wonderful recreation and a lighthearted deconstruction of its era. The little soupcon of Ian/Barbara shippiness in the mix is wonderful (and doesn't render it non-gen in the slightest IMO, given how present the same sort of thing is in the canon), and somehow it's particularly nice to see Vicki used in a fic like this -- she's not in it much but [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook nails her characterisation perfectly, giving the lie to the idea that she's a bit of a cookie cutter Susan replacement.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: U.N.I.T. Follow-Up Report 2.481.34
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ellisbelle
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 100 (exactly)
Author's summary: Sarah Jane compiles her field notes after her latest assignment—Mrs. Emma Peel.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/Emma Peel (from The Avengers)
Warnings: none

Recced because: a) It's a drabble. A proper, precisely-100-words-no-more-no-less drabble. A really good drabble like this one is like a little jewel, perfectly crafted to get across one particular idea, somewhere between a haiku and a good joke and who knows what else. b) It's a crossover with The Avengers (the British telly ones, not the American comics ones). Sarah Jane Smith/Emma Peel is quite possibly too much awesome to be withstood for longer than 100 words. c) Despite the restrictions of the word count and the format used, both women's personalities come through wonderfully. [livejournal.com profile] ellisbelle always gives good SJS, and her Emma Peel is equally well captured.

(You could have read the fic in the time it took to read that, but never mind.)

Story: More Than Just A Cheap Trick
Author: [livejournal.com profile] magicallaw
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1700
Author's summary: When Martha met Donna.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Donna, Ten
Warnings: none

Recced because: There are probably as many different approaches to the Madonna ship (the only ship with a good smoosh name in any fandom ever, IMO) as there are fics of it, from crack to high emotional drama to smut, but I particularly love this one for its wonderfully complicated knot of time-travel plotting, worthy of a Moffat episode and weaved brilliantly into both characters' journeys in canon.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: Dread Pirate Roberts
Author: [livejournal.com profile] biichan
Rating: Teen
Word count: 3000
Author's summary: If you fall in love with someone pretending to be someone else, are you in love with them or the person they're pretending to be? S3 AU.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Romana, Seven, K9
Warnings: None

Recced because: For some reason, Martha seems to be the new school companion shipped with the most old school characters. And one of the popular femslash pairings for her (along with Martha/Ace, which I could easily have recced an entire week for by itself, to be completely honest) is with Romana. [livejournal.com profile] biichan's take on it (again from this year's [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon) is lovely and does something very interestingly different: it's an alternate S3, with the alternateness coming from Romana having been the one to survive the Time War, not the Doctor. What follows from there is a really clever set of inversions of and counterpoints to canon, not just Martha's journey in S3 but all sorts of other bits as well. It's a succession of fantastic moments, by turns funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking and inducing pure punch-the-air fannish glee. A wonderful fic.

Story: The Importance of Good Tailoring
Author: [livejournal.com profile] glinda_penguin/Glinda
Rating: Teen
Word count: 1000
Author's summary:Fey Truscott-Sade and Izzy Sinclair: Saving the World in Style
Characters/Pairings: Fey Truscott-Sade/Izzy Sinclair
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a somewhat self-indulgent rec, as it was the fic I received in this year's [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon. But it deserves a lot more attention than it's had, because it's very very good indeed, and the only reason I can think of for it largely seeming to pass fandom by is that not enough people are into the wonderfulness Doctor Who Magazine comic strip in general, or its awesome canon femslash pairing Fey/Izzy in particular. This fic gets these two companions of the other-other iteration Eighth Doctor just right, and in such a way that it serves perfectly well as an introduction to them (well, OK, it probably helps if you know that Fey is bonded with Shayde, a superpowerful construct from the Matrix, but I've just told you so there you go).

Go. Read. Be converted. Then go out and buy the collections.

Story: Let There Be Light
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: Teen
Word count: 1100
Author's summary: "Fire, fire, burning bright," Gwendoline sing-songs. She stops, frowns. "No, that's wrong; the lion, the leopard, the roaring jungle." Ace creates her own story.
Characters/Pairing: Ace/Gwendoline
Warnings: none

Recced because: Ghost Light is my favourite Who story of all time (at least on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every third Sunday), and in amongst the many, many wonderful things going on in there (it's got more meat to it than most stories twice its length) is one of the best Ace's-girlfriend-of-the-week plotlines with Gwendoline. There's songs and crossdressing and everything. [livejournal.com profile] livii's lyrical, almost dreamlike style is a perfect fit for the strange, febrile atmosphere of the story, and an excellent springboard for exploring the link between these two women beyond what we saw on screen.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: Frozen, like me
Author: [livejournal.com profile] calapine/Carmen Sandiego
Rating: not given, but I'd say All Ages
Word count: 1600
Author's summary: Take comfort where you can, and wrap up warm in winter.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa/Tegan, Five
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because they're my OTP, dammit, and they're captured perfectly here. The story evokes its harsh wintry setting perfectly, setting up a fantastic contrast with the warmth they provide one another, and the different ways it expresses itself given their different but complementary personalities. Fabulous.

Femslash recs this week!

Story: Isobel's Zoe
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: Adult
Word count: 1200
Author's summary: What can go on between two women, besides photography.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe/Isobel Watkins (from The Invasion)
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This fic does everything right. Both women are very well characterised, with a clear contrast being drawn between Zoe's openminded 21st century perspective (as broadened further my travelling with the Doctor) and Isobel's dealing with attitudes to homosexuality that she's absorbed from the culture of her time. It's that bit of characterisation that's my very favourite thing about it: I don't think I've seen a better handling of the issue in fanfic before or since: most of the time, it's handwaved away and when it's not it tends to be either superficial or clunky. The sex is both integral to the plot and very hot, even while walking that tightrope. And on top of all that, it slots perfectly into its moment in canon.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Well, it's been fun reccing for you all; to finish off, here's some kinky porn from the most recent series, to balance out Friday's 1964-tinged take on the same thing.

Story: Routine
Author: cannibalcake
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2000
Author's Summary: Ten/Donna. PWP with bondage and fluff.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Donna
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: not only is it a deliciously hot piece of bondage porn for one of the hottest couples on the show, but it also does an excellent job of portraying it as part of a loving, trusting relationship and putting it in an overall context of negotiation and consent, which frankly we need more of in our bondage porn. And it's all fantastically in character.

Story: Daemonology
Author: Airie
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6200
Characters/Pairings: Five/Nyssa
Warnings: none

Recced because: it's a fantastic piece of "marry or die" fic that, despite the inevitable crackiness of the proceedings, keeps Nyssa perfectly in character throughout, and comes up with a good canon-based reason for the need to get married (I'm not going to give it away completely, but the title's a big clue). Hilarious fun.

And yet another inadvertently matching rec:

Story: Watching from the Wardrobe
Author: yesjamie [*]
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 700
Author's Summary: Susan's curious. She watches.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Susan
Warnings: Explicit Sex (and, specifically, voyeurism)

Recced because: I wanted to rec something from the kink meme in my week, and this is a fabulous story, which captures the feel of the Hartnell era despite being porn, and has an interesting take on Time Lord sex in there as well.

[*] yesjamie is (apparently) a collective of kink meme anons (but for all we know it may just be one prolific one!) posting to the Teaspoon from a shared account; I'd just like to point out that they're completely unofficial - I don't know their password and I don't want to.

Story: Dalek Diaries
Author: The Doctors Dance
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1500
Author's Summary: What if a Dalek kept a diary? Here we take a peek at what really goes on in the life of a modern Dalek.
Characters: Some Daleks, Ten
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: At its best, this is some of the most glorious crack I have ever found in this fandom (the May entries in particular are hilarious). As far as I can tell it's still ongoing, but this isn't the sort of WIP that's going to leave you on a knife edge of suspense.

Yesterday, Dalek Oruyi almost found this diary journal.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: Remnants
Author: katuah
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 2200
Author's Summary: What does the Doctor do when his current Companions are asleep? How does he explain his life to them? Does he think often about the ones who were with him before? What about the things they leave behind in his TARDIS - or in his heart?
Characters/Pairings: Leela, K9, Four/SJS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Leela as a character, and Four/Sarah Jane as a ship, don't get enough attention in my opinion, but here they're both done very well indeed (in particular, Leela's background is used very well, without demeaning her, and the treatment of the ship strikes me as perfect for all Doctor/human stuff). And it makes good use of the TARDIS, which always gets two thumbs up from me.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
OK, so two Ace stories today after two Fitz stories yesterday (this is all entirely coincidental, I promise), but this is a nice contrast to the apocalyptic nature of yesterday's rec:

Story: Morning Has Broken
Author: Gabriel Chase
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 400
Author's Summary: Ever wonder how to determine when it's morning aboard a time machine? Ace has found a way.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Benny, Seven
Warnings: None

Recced because: The NAs are often perceived as being full of darkness and companions barely getting along with the Doctor and so on, and it's not a wholly inaccurate picture, but it's not the whole story either. This lovely bit of fluff (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all, good fluff is great) shows a lighter side to the classic NA TARDIS team of Seven, Benny, Ace, whilst remaining perfectly in character for all of them.
[identity profile] ionlylurkhere.livejournal.com
Story: The World That Jack Built
Author: I Inayat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1500
Author's Summary: This is the way the world ends.
Characters/Pairings: Anji Kapoor, Faction Paradox, Fitz Kreiner, Samantha Jones, Compassion, Charley Pollard, Shayde, Ssard, Stacy Townsend, The TARDIS
Warnings: Torture and character death

Recced because: Primarily, because it's a fabulously well-written story, with prose that's almost terrifying in its sparseness, and a nice sense of doomed inevitability built up through good use of repetition (it's an AU from the end of Neverland, written at the time, where Zagreus wins). On the meta level, I love the way that it takes all the disparate strands of the Eighth Doctor's continuity (the audios, the books, the DWM comics and even the Radio Times strip) and bundles them up into a single coherent thread of narrative, while giving space to each of the companions in ways that make perfect sense (I particularly love Shayde's bit, and the use of the TARDIS is amazing).
