Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook and I'll be your reccer for this week! I enjoy all eras, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone along the way...

Story: Soft Jaws, Strong Bite
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2141
Author's Summary: A brief and heartwarming story about the Doctor, Romana, space pirates, and the universe's greatest children's show about prehistoric reptile cyborgs.
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It has Twelve, Romana and some space pirates? What more do you want in a fic? And yes, it is every bit as much fun as that sounds, particularly all the Doctor-Romana banter. It’s sweet, smart and silly in all the right ways - very like our show (and its hero).

Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2243
Author's Summary: The first few hours of night, and the last.
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/River Song
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: After The Christmas episode I suddenly craved some Twelfth Doctor/River fics. This story filled that craving admirably. It’s fun and sweet and a bit sad.

Story: Sex Storm
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3400
Author's Summary: Somehow, it took the Doctor three weeks to deliver Clara's coffee. Well, he did say he got distracted ...
Characters/Pairings: Twelfth Doctor/River Song
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: I tried not reccing this fic, but I like it too damn much to not rec it. This is [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis' take of what happened when the Doctor was three weeks late with Clara's coffee. Here, he intends to get coffee, but he's sidetracked by a younger River, still in uni and still getting into trouble. True to River's nature, this visit doesn't end on a chaste note.

Well, these past two weeks have sped by and I hope you've enjoyed the recs I've posted here as much as I have enjoyed sharing them. I'll just slip this last one in before handing reccing duties over to the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook:

Story: Riddles in the Dark
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1702
Author's Summary: The Great Intelligence easily sneaks onto the TARDIS. Defeating the Doctor, however, will be much harder.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon/The Doctor (2nd), the Great Intelligence
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well, mainly because this is a lovely, fluffy laugh-out-loud fic in which the Second Doctor finally gets that ultimate showdown he never got with the Great Intelligence post-Web of Fear and it takes the form of a somewhat whimsical riddle competition. Similarities to Bilbo's contest with Gollum in The Hobbit are entirely coincidental, the author assures us, and to be honest Professor Tolkien was never as funny as this. If you don't cackle like a fool at the bit with the pizza-related question then, quite honestly, I don't understand you at all.

This fic actually has quite a bit going on in addition to the great jokes. The Second Doctor, a character often thought of as quite difficult to capture in prose, is very finely portrayed here, with numerous moments and bits of dialogue that just ring true. Not only can you hear Troughton's voice at various points, you can picture his facial expressions. The idea of the Doctor having a romantic relationship with Jamie is presented so matter-of-factly and so tenderly that even if you're not a dedicated Two/Jamie shipper you'll find yourself getting behind it, and certainly you don't have to be into that ship to find the conclusion of the fic, and the means of the Doctor's victory over the Intelligence, very appealing indeed - a real "aww" moment, for me.

That pizza joke, though... :D Go and see for yourself. I'm not liable for anything you may spit out over your keyboard, by the way.

And that's your lot from me for now.

Story: Arms and the Man
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1465
Author's Summary: Nefertiti and Riddell, afterwards.
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s) (Nefertiti/John Riddell)
Warnings: BDSM

Recced because: It's a canon pairing seen in one of Eleven's crazier episodes, "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship," and it's a shameless, smutty fic.

Story: Clean Up on Aisle Three
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2467
Author's Summary: A grocery-store clerk's ordinary life takes an extraordinary turn.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Original Characters
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a thoroughly entertaining fic of the type that somehow sums up the nature of the entire show, really – there’s an alien boar and a whole thing with broccoli and a bucket of soapy water, and the Doctor needs help from an ordinary person – with joy and humour and heart. It’s a story that fits the Eighth Doctor perfectly, the original characters are well drawn and there are some lovely fleeting cameos to keep an eye out for, too. What more can you ask for?

Title: Tangrams
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 16251
Author's Summary: River Song unexpectedly arrives on Pete's World. What could possibly go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), TenII/Rose/River
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recc'ed Because: It's more than just a hot threesome. Don't get me wrong, it is a hot threesome, but with plot and original characters and relationships that complement and motivate and outshine the hot threesome. River gets catapulted into the zeppelin universe, where the duplicate Doctor is still trying to suss out his humanity, getting used to not having the TARDIS, getting used to being in a relationship. Rose is curious and smart and realistically a bit jealous, but [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis gives this story time to unfold, explore, and believably grow the relationship between River and Rose, whether the Doctor wants it or not. And at the end, he may juuust finally realize he does.

Story: Ordinary Human Days

Author: nonelvis

Rating: Teen

Word Count: 4048

Author's Summary: This time with Amy and Rory was going to be different.

Characters/Pairings: Eleven/Amy/Rory, Eleven/River

Warnings: Recreational drug use

Recced Because:

I am actually astounded that no one has beat me to reccing this, because it is hilarious (it really should have a tea-near-keyboard warning on it), sexy, clever, and one of the overall best Eleven/Amy/Rory fics I've ever read. It continues such diverse marvels as: Eleven attempting to cook breakfast, Eleven being angry at primitive kitchen appliances, jokes about the UNIT dating controversy, futuristic petunias, Sharkrace 3000, and a scene inspired by this post from texts from the TARDIS.

There's so much going on that when I went to fill out the reccing form I was a bit stunned to realize it's only a little over 4000 words. And, however whacky it all gets, the character voices read true throughout. It's about the Ponds being a strange, dysfunctional, happy, ridiculous family who continue to be all of those descriptors whether they are rocketing across the cosmos on the back of a magical space whale, or sitting around the kitchen eating cereal.

Story: Time Delay
Author: nonelvis
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1324
Author's Summary: "You're forty years late, Doctor."
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, Third Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: The Doctor finally comes back to offer Liz a trip in his TARDIS – forty years late, but what do details like that matter between old friends? This is a lovely, quiet look at both characters. Liz is still her recognisably brilliant and snarky self, the Doctor’s come to make up for lost time, and neither of them are too old for friendship, or another adventure together. As I’ve already said, it really is just lovely. Go read it – you won’t regret it.

Me again! Bit of a busy day today so today's rec is a little late! For that, have some PWP.

Story: Boxed In
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1,636
Author's Summary: Eleven/Dream Lord, anything dark and disturbing.
Characters/Pairings: Dream Lord, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: Dub!con, bondage, claustrophobia, sexual themes

Recced because: This is a dark one and will definitely be the only outward PWP that I rec, but I do have a thing for the Dream Lord and psychoanalysis, and so I don't think it's too much of an outlier from my interests. And besides it is, really, very hot, and hits quite a number of my kinks. The author writes a very believable plot - canon-wise, though how believable porn is in Doctor Who is, I suppose, in the eye of the beholder - and the voices are very accurate, which is really a plus when you read anything. It's also a nice insight into the Doctor's mind and his past relationships, and has a good syntax that progresses at a good pace and leaves you on a great cliffhanger that makes you entire re-think the Pandorica...

And that's it from me! I hope you enjoyed the recs this week - it's certainly been great fun bringing them to you. Let's end on a high note with...

Story: No Names, No Regrets
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1807
Author's Summary: "Prompt: Nine/River, "no names, no regrets." Includes light bondage."
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor/River Song
Warnings: light bondage (as per tin)

Recced because: An uncommon pairing, an excellent set-up and flawless execution. You know those fics you read and you just can't stop nodding the whole way through because you're thinking, "Canon. Yep, definitely canon. Oh, that is so canon"? Well, YMMV (everyone's does) but this story hits that spot for me. Nine is an adorable rogue in that "of course I want to but you'll have to convince me" way of his, and River is a very considerate and inventive ex-bespoke psychopath from the future. Their time together may be brief, but it's delightful while it lasts.

"Come with me."

She tilted her head towards a poorly lit corridor opposite the dance floor. A glass heart glowing the same shade of iridescent pink as the bar hovered over the corridor entrance.

"My friends …" He gestured to the dance floor. "I shouldn't leave them."

"That's very loyal of you, but it doesn't sound like much fun."

"Who said I'm not having fun? I've got a drink with a little brolly in it. It even opens and closes, see? Don't tell me that's not fun."

"There's fun," the blonde said, lips suddenly close to his ear, "and there's fun."

Title:  Wrong Turn on the Way to Albuquerque
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Word count: 905
Author's summary: The other time the Doctor made an unusual entrance. (Minor spoilers for "Vampires in Venice.")
Characters/Pairings: Amy and the Doctor, some OCs. Amy/Rory
Warnings: None

Recced because: It a hilarious fic, inspired by the Doctor's 'again' in Vampire in Venice. The gaudy reality of hen nights is portrayed beautifully, and the characterisations are amazing.

Author: nonelvis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2491
Author's Summary: "You can stay here as long as you like," Delirium says. "Except I think that won't be nearly long enough." (Crossover with Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.)
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
I dearly wanted to rec something with the Eighth Doctor in it. I went looking, and found this piece of wonderful. The Sandman characters are spot on, and their interaction with the Doctor is so true. I think Eight, in particular, would understand Delight-turned-Delirium.

In any case, this is officially my favorite version of the regeneration from 8 to 9.

As an accompaniment to the fic, I also offer this lovely piece of artwork I came across a while back:

Well, my tenure as the purveyor of recs is now over. I'm rounding it off with a superb fic that reflects my love of minor characters. Hope you enjoyed the fics!

Story: Six Lessons
Word Count:
Author's Summary:
Five things Anita learned from River Song, and one thing River learned from Anita.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Anita
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I confess that I have an absolute love of fic that is told from the point of view of minor characters, and here, Anita's point of view is bang-on. Moreover, this is River Song - wonderfully portrayed with all of her bristling wit and confidence - in a bit different capacity than we have seen her: she's a formidable teacher whose lessons are not necessarily anchored to any kind of course syllabus. The dialogue is cracking throughout and, as the reader, you're absolutely immersed in each of the scenes through it. But, underlying each scene is a subtlety of emotion that really hits you when you get to the fic's culmination. In all, it's wonderful and definitely worth a read.

Story: The Less Than Perfect Daughter
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Author's summary: Martha is pregnant, but Rose just won't take responsibility. How can the Doctor convince his companion that sometimes in this life, you've got to step up and do domestic? (Written for violetisblue's Afterschool Special prompt on the LJ churchontime comm.)
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Martha, Ten
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,900

Recced because: This is a hysterical bit of crackfic, with a great, breezy style that's indeed very reminiscent of a Very Special Issue TV movie. The characters are exaggerated in just the right ways to suit the story, and in particular I found the Doctor's attempts to promote an (almost traditional) two-parent family a riot. Fun, fresh, cracky – perfect for a weekend!

Author: [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word count: 344
Author's summary: Prompt: Nine/Jabe, gardening.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jabe
Warnings: Semi-explicit treesex.

Recced because: An utterly amazing exploration of one of my favourite pairings involving a one-off-character from new school. The imagery is brilliant, and it's shot through with a wistful sadness mixed with a strange sort of optimism that's absolutely lovely. (I have to confess to a slight bias here: this was written for a prompt I left on the kink meme.)

Story: Fake Palindromes
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6110
Author's Summary: She's so like his Ace, and yet so different. The duplicate Doctor meets the parallel universe version of an old companion.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Handy
Warnings: none

Recced because:

It’s a story about Handy and alt!Ace which is enough to recommend it in and of itself. The characters are perfectly rendered, as is the notDoctor’s varying states of confusion, guilt, and longing as he realises the strength and intelligence of this woman who is not Ace and who never had the dubious benefit of his tutelage as a teenager. He teaches her about the stars, and she teaches him about life.

Oh yeah, there are also lots of explosions (in a story about Ace, who could expect anything less?)

This is my final rec for the week. Thank you so much for having me and I hope that you enjoyed at least some of the stories I posted about. :)

Story: Opportunity
Author: nonelvis/[livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1854
Author's Summary: Reinette is accustomed to seizing opportunity, and the Doctor is opportunity waiting to be grasped.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Reinette
Warnings: Sexual situations, Light BDSM/Kink (D/s)

Recced because: This is one of the first smut!fics I ever read in fandom and I still think it is one of the hottest things that I've ever read. In this fic, [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis gives us a highly erotic interlude between a dominant!Reinette and somewhat submissive!Tenth Doctor. And while this fic may be categorized as a 'PWP', there is actually a plot there, lingering in the background, skillfully and subtly intertwined with the more sexual elements of the story. In fact, I actually think this fic is an excellent character study of both the Doctor and Reinette and an enticing look at the dynamics of their relationship with one another. There is a powerful, yet somewhat tragic story packed within this little gem, but also some gorgeous, sexy smut that never seems to lose its titillating spark after multiple rereads.

Story: A Long Night Is Full of Dreams
Author: [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2769
Author's Summary: Five days -- and six nights -- in the life of Martha Jones.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/various

Recced because: This is a marvellous character-study of Martha. Though written before "Reset", and thus no longer canon-compliant, the writing (of all the characters, not just Martha) feels true. Martha's relationships are explored in a series of frankly erotic dreams, while her waking days are spent piecing together her life in the wake of the Doctor and the Year That Never Was. A worthy tribute to a complex character.

Story: Without a Hitch
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2652
Author's Summary: Nine wakes up in Vegas married to one of his former companions.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith

Recced because: It's both awesomely fun and funny, with brilliant Nine voice. Lovely interactions between Nine and Sarah Jane, which make me really wish they'd met in canon at some point. It's set post School Reunion for Sarah Jane and in the gap at the end of Rose for Nine, and fits nicely into canon if you want it to. Which I do. ;D

Author: nonelvis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1315
Author's Summary: Prompt: Six/Donna - wrong TARDIS, wrong bed, right Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor/Donna
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: The kinkmeme at [livejournal.com profile] sizeofthatthing has given us some AMAZING stories and this is one of my absolute favorites. Not only is it hilariously in character and VERY hot, it made me start shipping Six/Donna like crazy. They are absurdly perfect together and this author does a fantastic job of showing us why.

Story: Leap in the Dark
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8183
Author's Summary: The 10th Doctor and Donna crash an unusual party, and discover they aren't the only uninvited guests.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Warnings: N/A

Recced because: For a fandom that's all about time travel it's strange how rarely it's used in fic. In this Ten and Donna arrive at a party and not only do they find themselves bounced back and forward along the time-line of the party but something big and with claws is hunting.

This fic is brilliantly well written and astonishingly clever. But what really impresses me about it is the interaction between Ten and Donna, given that it was written before Partners in Crime aired it plays beautifully both into what we knew about them from The Runaway Bride and what we've seen in S4 so far.

Oh, and if you need more convincing Donna befriends a robotic skull in a flowerpot called Bernard.

Story: Thirteen Steps
Author: nonelvis
Rating: Teen
Author's Summary: A man is defined by his relationships as much as his actions. Thirteen 100-word drabbles, one for each Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Twelth Doctor, Thirteenth Doctor, TARDIS, Jamie McCrimmon, Liz Shaw, Romana (I and II), Tegan Jovanka, Peri Brown, Jabe, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Captain Jack
Warnings: None

Recced because: "A man is defined by this relationships." Yep; couldn't agree more. Therefore, I subscribe to the belief that the Doctor is defined by his companions. This one will definitely be popular with fans of the comm [livejournal.com profile] loves_them_all, because this fic shows that he does. He really does.
