To wrap up my weekend, I'm going to rec at least two pieces that explore to very different, yet similar aspects of EoT.  This one involves the way the Time War  and what happened to the Time Lords and their fate that  was explored in that episode. 

Story:  Only a Northern Song
Author:  Roach Patrol
Rating:  Adult/R
Word Count: 4381/one-shot
Author's Summary: A dark and nasty little story from the beginning of the Time War. The Lord President Rassilon seeks to educate his Council on the ill-advised nature of disobedience, and demonstrate the consequences of recklessly, deliberately, and repeatedly engaging in said ill-advised action. The Doctor is just the right men for the job. After all, if you can't beat them, change them.

Warnings: graphic rape and torture, character death
Recced because:  I know there are a lot of people who weren't happy with how RTD presented the Time Lords and the effect the Time War had on them in EoT.  I however thought it was quite believeable that war could have driven most of the Time Lords insane.  It also gave me a new theory on how the regeneration from the Eighth Doctor to the Ninth Doctor could have come about.  Thus far this is the only fic that deals with both the Time Lords as we saw them in EoT, in particular Rassilon, and the regeneration we can only speculate about, which runs similar to some of my own theories.  It's a very dark and and chilling story, not for the easily squicked or triggered, but a very vivid and good story nonetheless.

Story: Jack Harkness - Super Temp

Recced because: What starts out seemingly as a complete AU, quickly turns into a terrifying and twisted story, involving a secret, evil branch of Unit, technology that's scary in both it's implimentation in the story and how scary it could be if used in real life, and a Jack who's victimized by both technology and the environment he's been placed in. Also features a kick-ass Ianto who takes no prisoners and is very much like the man who put shot Owen in the shoulder in Capt. Jack Harkness and used a stun gun to incapacitate one of the villians in Meat.

Now that I've started out with a New!Who rec, let's take a step into Classic!Who and the Fifth Doctor's era.

Story:  Best Enemies

Author's Summary:  With the Doctor critically injured and unable to regenerate, Tegan and Turlough join with the Master in a desperate bid to save the Doctor's life.

Recced because:  I've seen very little of the Fifth Doctor's era beyond what I've seen on YouTube and Time Crash.  However kittenmommy's story makes me feel like I have, crafting a story that shows the characters of that era without making me feel like I have to YouTube them to find out more about them before reading.  I also find the relationship that evolves between Tegan and the Master intriguing as well as the brief conversation between the Doctor and the Master.

As much as I adore the Doctor/Rose relationship, I think Donna Noble has to rank up as possibly my favorite companion in New Who. Somebody who speaks what she wants, does what she wants, and takes no crap from anybody, especially the Doctor. I couldn't do a week of recs without a fic that showcased her.


Story: Taking Charge

Rating: All Ages/PG
Word Count: 3058; one shot.
Author's Summary: It's up to Donna to save the Doctor on a nameless world with unfriendly plant-life.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, 10th Doctor


Recced because: As I said at the top, I adore Donna Noble, and I think she is one of the best companions/characters RTD ever came up with. In this story, Donna must brave this unfamiliar world in order to find the antidote that will save the Doctor's life. Her fear for the Doctor's life pushes her to be absolutely fearless in seeking what she needs. In doing so she comes to reflect on why it is that she decided she wanted to travel with the Doctor afterall. This story does a wonderful job of exploring Donna's character as she faces her emotional fears and aches and pains to reach her goal.

I've been trying to avoid reccing ongoing WIPs because I know many like to read completed stories. However the authors of this story updated this one today, so I just had to include it in the rec list.


Story: Never Quite Normal
Author: Pairadox Timeline
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 57,480; currently at 26 chapters
Author's Summary: He can't abide his face in the mirror or the memory of what he has done. The silence has made him insane and the insanity has made him dangerous. At the end of the Time War, the Doctor takes drastic steps, with the help of friends old and new. Nine AU.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart/Doris Stewart, Harry Sullivan, John Benton, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith
Warnings: Adult language, some violence, issues of alcohol abuse.

Recced because: The authors take a broken and dmanaged post - Time War Nine, and spins a brilliant AU based on making a drastic path with his life. The bonds between himself and Classic Who characters, the Brigadier, Benton, and Harry Sullivan are lovingly evident and his meeting with Rose and the development of their relationship is painfully poignant. Both Classic and New Who fans will find unique gems to enjoy about this story and it's overall tale of pain, loss, and trying to put oneself back together again.

I'm going to take us to angst tonight. I'm kind of in a foul mood and this story always fits the bill for me.

Story: Never Enough Time (Formerly "Time Heals")

Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 14850 spread over five chapters.
Author's Summary: Rose is gone. Without her, the Doctor is lost and uncertain he has the strength, or desire, to struggle through grief again.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, TARDIS, Sarah Jane Ten/Rose implied
Warnings: Attempted suicide.

Recced because: Suicide I realize isn't everybody's cup of tea, but this story really shows how one could be lead to attempt it, and the consequences of such an act. It takes the Doctor, post - Doomsday, to his lowest point and with some help, puts him on some semblance of okay again without Rose. It's often one of the things I'll read when I'm in a really angsty mood (like tonight).

I'll try for something somewhat happier tomorrow :-)
