Author's Summary: He does so enjoy assassins.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), Turlough
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: I... really don't like the first person narrative, so for a story to jump out at me like this, written in the first person, it must be something good. Add to that the fact that Turlough isn't a companion I know well and really it's an unlikely pick. But in contrast to the chipperness of the last rec, this is a very emotion-driven piece, and you're on the edge of your seat. I was holding my breath from the very begginning, because it's always nice to hear the more dangerous side of the Fifth Doctor. You find yourself simultaneously before feeling for Turlough and pitying him; you can see his angle, but you also want the Doctor to survive. The conversation flows, and it feels perfectly real, with interruptions, changes in tone, the works. The ending is very touching, too.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] merryghoul, and I'm back for my second round of recs here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax after a long hiatus. I've got my recs all ready to go for this round, so let's get started, shall we?

Story: Master's Thesis
Author: helluin
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 42,530
Author's Summary: When Nyssa tries to return home with the cure to a deadly plague, the TARDIS overshoots and slips back into her past, the Doctor's future. Worse, the Master is already there, taking a sinister interest in her family. Hemmed in by potential time paradoxes, there's only one person to whom Nyssa can turn for help: her best friend Tegan.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Other Character(s), Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This fic is based on the Big Finish arc where an older Nyssa joins Five, Tegan and Turlough for a spell in the TARDIS, but this can be read without any knowledge of the Big Finish audios. What I love about this fic is that it feels like a Big Finish audio or even an old serial with Five in it. There's action, witty quips and a paradox that needs to be fixed or else. I highly recommend this for Classic Who fans.

Recced because:

When I first read this, I ending up shooting tea out through my nose laughing. The fic was then instantly bookmarked for whenever I recced Calufrax next and I've read it several times whenever I need a good cheer-up. Why do I love this fic? It has some of the best Tegan and Turlough bickering I've ever seen in fic, a mash-up of two great eras, a bit of thought on the practicalities of TARDIS travel, and a really great tip on how to save your under wires from destruction while adventuring across the universe.

Also, it has koalas.

Author's Summary: In a case of mistaken identity, the Doctor and Tristan Farnon each end up experiencing a day in the other's life.
Cracky crossover with All Creatures Great & Small.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I like crossovers, and was a fan of the late James Herriot's books and the TV show derived from them. So this crossover, in which the fifth Doctor meets a look-alike vet, works very well for me. It's a bonus that it's by an author who hasn't been recced here before.

‘Where are we going, Doctor?’ Tegan asked, watching the time rotor in the centre of the console rise and fall as the TARDIS dematerialised.

The Doctor activated the dimensional stabilisers to aid their flight. ‘Somewhere quiet and peaceful. I think we could all do with a little holiday, don’t you?’

‘I’m not sure that’s wise,’ said Turlough, watching him begin to set the coordinates, ‘since it seems that every time you try to take us to a place where there aren’t any hostile locals, lethal radiation levels or laws against wearing brightly-coloured socks-’ He paused to give Tegan an unimpressed look as she tried and failed to hide a smirk. ‘-we end up being faced with precisely that.’

The Doctor looked down at the monitor so he wouldn’t have to meet his eyes. ‘Yes, I’m afraid I’d forgotten that fluorescent green is a sacred colour on the planet Mergorax. But let’s not dwell on our mistakes, shall we?’ He realised the little screen was showing Earth, the planet they were now currently orbiting around. That was strange; he didn’t remember setting the coordinates for here. Either he’d become so used to typing the number in that it had become second nature and he’d done it absentmindedly or the TARDIS had decided to bring them here anyway.

Well, this week has gone very fast indeed. Already we're at my final rec. I do hope you've enjoyed them all, or at least some of them. I've tried to give you a nice mixture of eras, from right across the history of the show. But there has been, you may have noticed, one notable omission. The Doctor's greatest foes have not made an appearance. Well, until today...

Story: Final Thoughts
Author: The Lonely God
Rating: All Ages

Author's Summary: After the events of 'Resurrection of the Daleks', one of the Daleks survives the battle in the warehouse. It struggles to comprehend what has happened and begins to fear.
Characters: The Daleks, The Doctor (5th), Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: Doctor Who and the Daleks are bound together. You can't have one without the other. They're like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Posh and Becks. Shrek and Fiona. Sonny and Cher. Robson and Jerome. So it only seems right that, for my final rec, we get a Dalek story. But this isn't a typical one. It gives you a brand new perspective on the universe's angriest pepper pots and shows them to be... Oh, I won't spoil it. Read it and find out for yourself.

Confession: I think, over time, I've decided that the Fifth Doctor, despite being introduced to the Fourth Doctor first via Who repeats on PBS, is my Doctor.  He dressed very comfortably, treated his companions as equals  and always tried to inspire bravery in all of them except for Kamelion.  Here's a rec from that era with one of Fivey's companions and how Fivey helps to soothe his angst.

Story: Waking and Sleeping
Author: Awdures
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3194
Author's Summary: Turlough's contract with the Black Guardian is at an end, but he's still struggling to shake off the experience.
Characters/Pairings: Turlough
Warnings: Explicit Violence
Recced because: This is an amazing character piece dealing with Turlough after the events of "Enlightenment." Despite being free of the Black Guardian's contract, Turlough still dreams of the Guardian's voice and killing the Doctor. He needs the help of the Doctor to shake off these dreams. Awdures does a good job of detailing Turlough's nightmares and the Guardian's voice. I couldn't stop reading this fic, and I was disappointed when it ended. Highly recommending if you like Turlough or Fivey's era.

Well, another week of reccing flies by... I hope all of you reading Calufrax have enjoyed the stories I've brought to your attention over the past seven days and smiled indulgently rather than gritting your teeth in annoyance while reading my blather about them :). So, to finish off, another one I think very highly of, and that's me for the time being. Hope we can do this again soon.

Story: Time Lag
Author: castrovalva9
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,480
Author's Summary: In 1979 London, the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough accidentally crash a Torchwood party.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), Tegan Jovanka, Turlough, Torchwood
Warnings: None

Recced because: I don't know if anybody else has seen the recent film version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy yet, but there's a sequence in it in which the great and good (or great...ish at any rate) of the Circus, John Le Carre's fictionalised version of MI6, gather at what looks like the cheesy 70s Xmas office party from hell. And when I saw it, it reminded me strongly of this fic. In a good way! Essentially, that's what happens here - Five and companions inadvertently crash the Torchwood Institute's 100th anniversary bash and hilarity ensues, with dancing, team-building pep talks and flagrant misuse of alien technology all featuring in the course of the evening. I really like the way this story portrays Five, Tegan and Turlough, a Doctor-companion team that always make me smile with their various personality quirks and often spiky interpersonal relations. The character voices and interactions are spot on. As for Torchwood, they don't exactly cover themselves in glory - you know that it probably really was like this for them most of the time. It is all in all extremely funny, and yet also very true to the characters and what we know of this particular corner of the Whoniverse. So, I encourage you to read this and hope you all enjoy it - please leave reviews for the author if at all possible.

Author's summary: "I could beat you in any race on Grket. It's a simple fact." Entry for the 2010 Short Trips on audio writing contest."
Characters: Doctor 5, Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: I would crawl five miles over broken glass to stand in 5's garbage. That being said, this is a story about Turlough. Turlough, the surly malcontent, is having the unexpected time of his life using his high-gravity muscles on a low-gravity planet. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...some guy from Trion. The Doctor, even stronger than Turlough, is having less fun as he destructs his way across the land trying to help the inhabitants with not getting killed to death by an unnatural disaster.

God what a imaginative, well-written, beautifully characterized and funny story. Eve11's original aliens are a treat and their world is well-populated with fascinating critters. Best of all the low-grav aspect of it makes me want to go there and play, play, play. Great stuff. And I found myself truly liking Turlough which just proves what a good story this is, really.

The rootwood facade also served as a railing for a wedge-shaped veranda cut into the top floor, and it was onto this balcony that the Doctor found himself politely escorted.

"Please wait here for the completion of the scan," Technician Strrek said, peeling his hand from the Doctor's sleeve as he ushered him out of the laboratory.

"Yes, I'm terribly sorry-" the Doctor said, looking past Strrek's reedy, towering frame toward the monitors inside.

"As am I," Strrek interrupted, "for that is the second display console you have broken today."

Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The TARDIS, Turlough, Kathy NightingaleWarnings: None

Recced because: The unfinished story of Blink is Kathy's marriage, and her simultaneously uplifting and depressing fate is explored in this fic. Added to this is a nice character student of the fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough. A lovely, bitter sweet snapshot.. And the ending is fantastic.

Hello! I post as allonym at the Teaspoon and I'm your reccer this week. I'll be recommending a variety of stories, mostly new Who and Torchwood. I tried to develop a theme, and what I came up with is "stories I liked that I think everyone should read."

Story:Time, Considered as a Helix
Author: blackwingsblackheart
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 10,657
Author's Summary: The Doctor is having inappropriate thoughts (set after the events of "The Five Doctors")
Characters/Pairings: Three/Turlough, Five/Turlough
Warnings: Explicit sex, hints of possible past abuse

Recced because: I'm a sucker for a multi-Doctor story, and this is one of the best ones I've read that deals with the personal timeline issues the Doctor goes through after meeting himself. The story, set right after the events of The Five Doctors is accessible even to those who don't normal read old Who. Three and Five are the POV characters and their similarities and differences are wonderfully characterized, and the glimpses we get of the other Doctors is spot-on. Turlough's complexities are nicely captured, plus there's some wonderful smut.

Story: A List of the Lost
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3889
Author's Summary: Five times the fifth Doctor was alone with one of his companions, each time after losing someone else.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Peri
Warnings: References to character death

Recced because: The Fifth Doctor traveled with a lot of companions, and he traveled with a lot of companions who also traveled with each other. But no one travels with the Doctor forever. In a series of vignettes, this fic explores each companion's reaction to the loss of someone, and in so doing, explores how each companion sees his or her own relationship to the Doctor. Taken individually, the vignettes are a wonderful series of character studies; added together, they are a study on the Doctor himself, and an insightful look into the Doctor/companion relationship.

Characters: Donna Noble, Five, Tegan, Turlough. (Donna/Tegan but anything explicit goes on off-camera, as it were)
Warnings: none given

Recced because: Written way back in July of 2007 for the [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon on lj. I can't even remember if we knew Donna was going to be the next companion by then; it was only 2 weeks or so after Last of the Time Lords aired. All we'd seen of Donna was the Runaway Bride, but thankfully, that was plenty of material to go on for those of us who already loved her :) [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k hits the ground running with this story and it just. gets. funnier. Seriously, I had a hard time picking an excerpt because I wanted to quote the whole thing. Its tone reads like crack-fic but the fact of the matter is, it's actually scarily plausible. Even if you don't usually go for femslash, read this story, especially if you need a laugh (it's totally worth it just for the description of the TARDIS noise at the end). And the ending itself is great fun and just the slightest bit prescient for series four.

Story: The Brigadier's Wedding
Author: Aralias
Rating: All ages

Story:  The Ten Doctors
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,568
Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

Story: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctor’s Exile Very Deeply Indeed (And One Time He Wished The Doctor Would Just Sod Off Forever)
Author: x_los
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8119
Author's summary: The Doctor is many things to many people, but to Irving Braxiatel he is the universe's most annoying little brother.
Characters/Pairings: Braxiatel, Susan, Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, Ainley!Master, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Peri, Romana II, Leela, Eighth Doctor, Narvin
Warnings: spoilers for the Gallifrey audios in the final part

Recced because: It sucks to be the Doctor's older brother. It really, really sucks. And nobody knows that better than “Irving” Braxiatel. Luckily, nobody suffers quite as beautifully as Brax does, either, which is a good thing as this fic is pretty much as it says on a tin: an exercise in showing all the many ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. No, wait, let me rephrase that: all the many hilarious ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. Because this fic is one of the funniest I've read in a long while. And, oddly enough, it's one of the better character studies too.

The sound of a dematerialization made them all look towards the TARDIS–but she was showing no signs of immanent departure. Indeed her sturdy blue frame seemed to silently rebuke them for doubting her reliability. In the direction they’d all just turned from, someone coughed. In unison three heads swiveled back to the plant. A man in a human business suit hovered above the manzanita.

“You stop right there, Master, that plant is endangered!” Peri yelled, standing as if she planned to fight him off the bush.

“Peri,” the Doctor sighed, “not everyone who’s made unwise facial hair decisions and wants a chat with me is the Master. Sometimes it’s only Shakespeare, or, in this case, Irving Braxiatel.”

Story: Second Chances
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2182
Author's Summary: The Master's latest overcomplicated scheme backfires, giving the Fifth Doctor a unique opportunity.
Characters/Pairings: The Fifth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), Tegan Jovanka, Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: I may be a tad biased, as I asked for this story, but it's done so perfectly. The Fifth Doctor is able to confront the man the Master was, and it's as complicated, bittersweet, painful and wistful as you'd imagine. His plan to keep the Master this way is doomed, of course, and everyone knows it.

Tegan and Turlough, though they play supporting roles, are also characterised very well.

Warnings: Real Person/Fictional Person Het

Recced because: Just knowing that this fic exists fills me with unholy glee. It's the sort of thing that I was hoping someone would write after last fall's Children In Need preview scene and I was so happy to find out that someone did. Every single one of the ten scenes that make up this fic is brilliant in its own way and every single character is drawn as if from life. The Sixth Doctor bit is especially hilarious. I also loved the Seventh Doctor bit for Benny's diary entries and the Third Doctor bit for containing one of my own personal ships. They're all good bits, however. Highly recommended for everyone.

I like The Five Doctors, and this missing scene between Turlough and the Doctor explains his decision to run away from the presidency.  As I've mentioned, I enjoy glimpses into the Doctor's distant past, and this is a good one.  Sometimes changing yourself is as good as it gets.

Story: Back Home
Author: Van Donovan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 14,923 (six chapters, each averaging at about 2,500 words)
Author's Summary: Turlough returns to Earth, not entirely of his own volition, and finds that while some things have changed, some are exactly the same.
Characters/Pairings: Turlough/Tegan, Turlough/Owen, Turlough/Various others/implied, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: Explicit sex, swearing
Note: (this is taken from the A/N at the beginning of the first chapter) Helps to be familiar with Turlough's run on Doctor Who, or at least his intro triology/exit serial. Basic Torchwood knowledge helpful, but not required. Set in the three month glossed-over gap in Torchwood, somewhere probably late 2007, early 2008.

Recced because: The author managed to capture Turlough's personality perfectly and in such a subtle way that it's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes the characterization so perfect. The descriptions of things Turlough smells and feels are so detailed that it's hard to not imagine you're standing right there alongside him. And the intimate moments, while not as explicit as the warning implies, focus more on the emotions between the characters and not the physicality. Overall, a beautiful story that leaves you wanting more by the time you've finished the last chapter.

Recced because: The crack. Oh the glorious, incomparable crack. This has to be my favorite in the "a bunch of Doctors meet, hijinks ensue" genre, and every time I come back to it it's still funny. Much to Finmajik's credit, she uses the stereotypes for each Doctor to hilarious effect, but also manages to add a smidgen of believability to the whole drunken affair.

Characters/Pairings: Ten/Turlough, the Black Guardian, and two characters I can't mention without ruining the surprise.
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: I love this story unreservedly, and not just because I helped beta it. Written as an entry for the Cliché-Swap Ficathon, this story takes the "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" rewrite with Rose trope and applies it to Ten and Turlough.

Although Martha must surely have resented her position at Farringham more than we saw onscreen, squirrely, mercenary Turlough has far less patience for the job than Martha. He quickly takes as much control of the situation as he can, swindling the students in a gambling ring, framing the maids for his petty crimes, and even allowing the Black Guardian to tempt him again into killing the Doctor in exchange for escape from Earth. "Ginger and Free" is filled with black humor and knowing satire about the show itself, and it makes me laugh out loud every time I read it.

Author's Summary: Why would Sarah suddenly decide to get married? Luke is determined to find out the answer before he ends up with an unexpected stepparent.
Characters: Sarah Jane, Luke, Clyde, Maria, Alan, The Doctor (10th), Turlough

Recced Because: A fun, endearing, and cracky story deserves to be appreciated. In Altered States, Sarah Jane announces her wedding without sharing the groom's identity. Clyde, Luke, Maria, and Alan attempt to solve the mystery, while the Doctor arrives to cause a disruption.

"It began quite simply with Sarah announcing over tea that she was getting married. Luke was not amused."

Author's Summary: Severus Snape never knew when or where he would see the Doctor next. (Crossover with "Harry Potter.").
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Erimem, Nyssa, Peri Brown, Tegan Jovanka, The Fifth Doctor, Turlough, (Snape, Lily, and Dumbledore from HP)
Warnings: Spoilers for all HP books
Word Count: 5,098

Recced because: The first time I read this story I was blown away by the brilliance of it. Snape meets the Fifth Doctor for the first time when he's nine years old, but that's not the first time the Doctor's met him. The Doctor's appearance is woven in through Snape's life, always at times that end up being important in some way.

Story: And Is There Honey Still For Tea?
Author: uktechgirl
Rating: teen
Word Count: 71,164
Author's Summary: Rose Cottage, Sussex, 1926. The Doctor and Turlough have settled down to an idyllic life of tea, crumpets, and the click of red leather on willow. But is it really as perfect as it seems?
Characters/Pairings: Five/Turlough
Warnings: spontaneous human combustion, baked goods

Recced because: Five and Turlough do domestic. Let me repeat that: Five and Turlough do domestic. It goes... actually about as well as one might expect, given the oh so very proper, repressed Englishness of the alien gentlemen in question. There are secrets, lies, assumptions, hidden obligations, a murder mystery involving Gideon Mantell, and many questions answered with awkward silences. However there's also lounging in baths and hammocks, and cricket, mucking about in boats, and some odd alien version of love. If Dreaming of England is the granddaddy of all Five/Turlough fics then this is its worthy successor, a love letter that both celebrates the pairing while holding a mirror up to its flaws. It's both heartwarming and tragic, and with its epic length is makes for a wonderful summer read. With plenty of tea and biscuits on hand, naturally.

Story: Torus
Author: dblauvelt
Rating: none given, I vote Teen
Word Count: 13,154
Author's Summary: The crew encounter an ancient toroidal planetoid. A Jim M/Andy Lane style piece set between Mawdryn and Terminus.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa, and Turlough
Warnings: none

Recced because: This story is unique on several fronts, none the least of which being its placement in canon. There are precious few fics which take place in the gap between "Mawdryn Undead" and "Terminus," and it is always interesting to see a take on how this TARDIS team would have worked, given more time. The result is much more fantastic and bizarre than the summary gives it credit for, with the crew taking very divergent paths. Each of them is given their own set of motivations, their own journey, but they all want the same thing: home, whatever that means for them. Brilliant world building, poetically trippy prose, and Nyssa goes parasailing in the first chapter. Just a lovely little gem.

Story: It's About Choices
Author: Van Donovan
Rating: Mature
Word Count: 9,056
Author's Summary: Turlough influences some of Tegan's choices.
Warnings: graphic sex

Recced because: I keep saying that fandom needs to be fired for not producing more Tegan/Turlough fic, and this story is my Exhibit A for why the pairing works. The characterization is spot-on, from the snappy dialogue to the perfectly captured mannerisms. Tegan's observations of Turlough, his analysis of her, their reactions to each other all meld into a snarky, bittersweet piece made all the better by the inescapable conclusion. Also: hot like burning.

Author's summary: Turlough gets a visit from an eccentric solicitor - by the name of Jack Harkness.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Turlough
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~4,100 words

Recced because: This works unbelievably well. A wet-behind-the-ears Jack visits Turlough at school just prior to Mawdryn Undead; he's there to get a reading for the Time Agency, and Turlough's determined to find a way off of Earth. Turlough is written just dead-on, and it's fabulous fun to watch minxy, conniving Turlough outthink a green Jack (which you don't see enough of in fic). Add in some hilarious bits (Jack's ideas of fashion in the 1980s), some meta bits (thoughts on ages of schoolboys and that Jack ends up wearing Ten's outfit), and some quite hot bits and you get something really different and very clever and very fun.

Story: Dating in the Workplace
Author: Paranoid Seat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2471
Author's Summary: If anyone had asked the Doctor whether he begrudged his companions their interpersonal relationships, he would’ve denied it strenuously, with much hand-waving and/or babbling. Because it was true! For the most part. Crackfic, plain and simple. Have your brain-bleach on standby. Do not attempt to eat or drink while reading unless you have a valid warantee on your monitor/keyboard.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Ben/Polly, Two/Jamie, Brigadier/Benton, Tegan/Nyssa, Peri/Erimem, Ace/Hex, Five/Turlough, Jack Harkness.
Warnings: Crack

Recced because: Sometimes you want to read long plotty gen, sometimes you want to read some character driven angst and sometimes what you really want to read is some brain bendingly hilarious crack!fic.

This fic has something for everyone, and by that I mean that whoever you ship they probably get a mention in there somewhere. It's very funny and never fails to cheer me up any time I read it.

Plus who doesn't love a fic that contains the line 'Captain Jack Harkness, at your service. Ah... I’ll find my pants, shall I?'

Story: Don't Leave Me Hanging

Rating: none given
Word Count: 1751
Author's Summary: Turlough was a bit naughty, and Jamie did not appreciate it.
Characters/Pairings: Five/Turlough, mentions of Two/Jamie
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's sweet, funny, and hot, and an affectionate tribute to two favourite eras and pairings. Though Jamie doesn't actually appear, his love and fierce loyalty for his Doctor is strongly felt. Turlough, drawn in all his snarky, weasely glory, winds up in bondage (yay!), but does get a happy ending. As does Five. And the reader.

Author's summary: Desperate to stay aboard the TARDIS, Turlough labours under a tragic misconception.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/Turlough
Warnings: graphic sex

Recced because: Rounding out the week, here's a beautifully angsty fic featuring one of my favorite pairings, Five/Turlough. Poor Turlough has jumped to conclusions and thinks he must serve a particular purpose to be allowed to stay aboard the TARDIS. The Doctor, of course, has no idea what Turlough's thinking. If you like this short and powerful story, check out the companion piece, Delusions.

Author's Summary: Turlough is fixated on the Master. However shall he scratch his itch?
Characters/Pairings: Delgado!Master/Turlough
Warnings: none

Recced because: The idea of Turlough keeping a diary is one of the greatest things ever. And that's exactly what he does here. It's at the Doctor's urging, of course, since Turlough has initial reservations about setting his thoughts down on paper. Once he gets started, though, he finds a favorite topic: his attraction to the Master, which even Turlough himself thinks is disturbing, considering that the Master is evil. The solution? Turlough decides to seek out an earlier, presumably less insane, regeneration of the Master! This story is one of the funniest things I've read in ages and the characterization of Turlough is excellent.

Story: Dreaming of England
Author: Kitty Fisher
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 52382
Author's Summary: After Turlough went home...
Characters/Pairings: Five/Turlough, Five/Master, Master/Turlough
Warnings: graphic sex, graphic violence, non-con, rape, drugs, hurt/comfort, angst

Recced because: this is the granddaddy of Five/Turlough fic, plain and simple. Even if you’ve never clapped eyes on this story, if you’ve ever read or written any Five/Turlough fic or meta or vague flailing in their direction, it’s probably been influenced by this one. Every pairing has its origin story and for them, this is it: one of the first (possibly the first: it’s been online since 98 at least) to explore the potential in a swishy blond Time Lord (complete with a kinky sadist for an ex-boyfriend) and an angsty ginger minx in school uniform. Thanks to the likes of [livejournal.com profile] who_otp, these days it’s hard to imagine any pairing being ‘new’ – but think back to a fannish world where slash really was marginal: when there was only one fic to read. That’s how fanon is made.

This rec comes with provisos. This is not light reading: it’s long, the warnings are genuine, there’s melodrama aplenty, and the schmoopiness amidst all the h/c might well read like slash cliché these days. But this is a justified classic, chockfull of tension, angst, and the creeping sense of dread that suits the tail-end of the Five era down to the ground. If you've newly discovered Doctor/Master thanks to the new series: if you like your Turlough smushed to bits and chained to a wall (and lord knows, JNT seemed to): if you have even a passing interest in classic Who slash - well, this is how they kick it old-school.

Story: Unbound
Author: Sub Rosa
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 33717 (in nine chapters + epilogue)
Author's summary: Turlough develops an urgent need, wants the Doctor's help, and gets more than he bargained for.
Characters/Pairings: Five/Turlough, Tegan
Warnings: Explicit sex, kink of the consensual variety, reference to non-con in the past, angst

Recced because: I’m not sure where the fanon that Turlough is queer as a $3 bill and has a taste for bondage came from, but I fully support it

The story is actually more interesting, and serious, than the PWP-sounding description would imply.  Explores some of the dynamics and implications of voluntary submission and its distinction from abuse and exploitation.

And there doesn't seem to be that much good Doctor/Turlough slash in the world, which is a damn shame.

Story: Balm of Gilead
Author: Patrice
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 37,496
Author's Summary: Still coping with the events surrounding "Enlightenment," the Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough stumble into the American South, circa 1850. While trying to help some newfound friends, Turlough makes a startling discovery about himself.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, Vislor Turlough, Fifth Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: Patrice is one of my favorite authors when it comes to the Fifth Doctor's era, and it was really hard to choose just one of her stories to rec. I finally decided on this one, though, for a variety of reasons. In it, she takes a difficult place and time period - the Deep South, sometime prior to the American Civil War - and throws the Doctor and his companions into a situation that that can't be "fixed" simply by a snap of the fingers. While there's an alien presence, many of the issues dealth with - most noticeably the issue of slavery - is because of humans, not aliens.

One of the things I adore about this story is that it gives us a deeper look at the Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough than is usually presented. By showing their reactions to the situation, each of them unique to the character's personality, it reveals quite a bit about who they really are inside. Add a delightfully complex plot to that, not to mention the story's length, and you're in for a terrific read.
