Story: Celery
Author: Cyber Moggy
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 491
Author's Summary: An unconscious Tegan is being carried back to the Tardis by the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka (Five/Tegan maybe if you squint)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s such an atmospheric and gorgeous ficlet, focusing, unusually (and excellently) around the sense of smell – and using it to illuminate something of the relationship between the Doctor and his favourite stroppy Australian.

Story: The Mysterious Twig
Author: whatthefoucault
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: Turlough discovers an odd bit of a plant hanging from the ceiling of the TARDIS console room. Memories and feelings ensue
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/Vislor Turlough, Tegan Jovanka (mentions Jamie McCrimmon)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm fond of this short, fluffy, holiday fic where the Doctor and Turlough talk about why the Doctor hangs mistletoe in the TARDIS.

rec: Doctor Who and the Dangers of Hospitality by SpaceTimeConundrum

Story: Doctor Who and the Dangers of Hospitality
Author: SpaceTimeConundrum
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5027
Author's Summary: Some planets really know how to throw a party.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th)/Nyssa of Traken, Tegan Jovanka
Warnings: None

Recced because: With everything that happens to this TARDIS team in canon, they deserve a lighter and fluffier moment or two. This story is a bit reminiscent of Black Orchid; just letting the characters have a bit of relaxation and fun (special mention goes to Tegan's parts) with some romance dusted in while keeping everyone in-character.

Rec: Fisson, by PencilGuardian

Hello Calufraxers! I'm Conundrum, your fan fiction guide for the next two weeks. You can find me lurking on Teaspoon as SpaceTimeConundrum. I've got quite a selection lined up for you all, a solid mix (I hope) of Classic and New Who ranging from the dark to comic, often in the same story. Now, let's start things off with a bang, shall we?

Story: Fission
Author: PencilGuardian
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 39,791
Author's Summary: The Doctor is accidentally cut in half whilst trying to stop the Master.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/Nyssa of Traken, Tegan Jovanka, the Master
Warnings: No standard warnings. Some body horror.

Recced because: This may very well be my favorite fic on Teaspoon. What that says about me, I'll let you all be the judge once you've followed my advice and read this.

The story is in turns funny, bittersweet, and more than a little bit demented. Aside from a few plot details that absolutely would not sneak past the BBC censors, this is a near-perfect homage to the Classic Who serials of the 1980s. Much like in the source material it frequently references, the Fifth Doctor is forced to endure a succession of horrifying traumas along the way. Poor Doctor. Luckily Nyssa and Tegan are there to save the day. It's excellently plotted and every character is given an active role in the story, even a few genre-savvy minions. I especially liked how it deals with the consequences of the Master's body snatching in The Keeper of Traken in a unique way.

I love this fic to pieces.

Rec: "Critical Angle," by Calapine

Posting on behalf of Styrofoam monster on Teaspoon.

Story: Critical Angle
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 940
Characters: Tegan, Five
Summary: They say it's better here than anywhere else.

Recced because: Tegan is so well drawn here as the complex, confrontational and vulnerable person she is. This fic unravels the trauma that Tegan undergoes from traveling with the Doctor, tackles their complex relationship and how very distant and alien the fifth doctor can be. There are too many wonderful lines to list, but this one especially struck me: "She’ll think of Earth and he’ll tell her about all the wonderful places in the universe she’s never going to see because they’re too busy helping the not so wonderful places." Nothing is nice or neat in this fic. But despite that, it is the little moments -- Tegan dreaming of being a car mechanic, tea in the rain room, and Tegan's colonizing the cloister room -- that offer some humanity in the harsh and clinical prose.

A haunting fic.

rec: the doctor cooks (the eleventh time lucky remix), by paranoidangel

Story: The Doctor Cooks (The Eleventh Time Lucky Remix)
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3264
Author's Summary: The Doctor offers to cook dinner for Amy and Rory. What could go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble.
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor claims he can cook. Actually, as it turns out, the Doctor has always claimed that he could cook. This fic starts off with the Eleventh Doctor promising to cook a special meal for Amy and Rory, and then moves on to a series of flashbacks that show past Doctors, past companions, and past culinary (mis)adventures. Much of it is very funny, but there is also a wonderful depth to the writing, especially in the framing story of Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

Story: He Laughs
Author: LilacFree
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 106
Author's Summary: This is nearly a poem, I think, and is a look at the Ainley Master on his debut in 'Logopolis'.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, Fourth Doctor, the Master (Ainley version)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because I was just going through my Favorites on Teaspoon tonight, glancing at some new gems I added to my list last night/early this morning, and rediscovered this beauty. And I was profoundly relieved to see that no one else has recced it yet.

Anyway. I've recently begun familiarizing myself with Ainley's version of the Master, and my friends will readily attest to how quickly I've become hooked on him. This is a brief, and incredibly chilling, glimpse of him during one of my favorite episodes. For anyone who doesn't happen to know this version of the character yet...well, this pretty much sums him up!

Master's Thesis by helluin

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] merryghoul, and I'm back for my second round of recs here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax after a long hiatus. I've got my recs all ready to go for this round, so let's get started, shall we?

Story: Master's Thesis
Author: helluin
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 42,530
Author's Summary: When Nyssa tries to return home with the cure to a deadly plague, the TARDIS overshoots and slips back into her past, the Doctor's future. Worse, the Master is already there, taking a sinister interest in her family. Hemmed in by potential time paradoxes, there's only one person to whom Nyssa can turn for help: her best friend Tegan.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Other Character(s), Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This fic is based on the Big Finish arc where an older Nyssa joins Five, Tegan and Turlough for a spell in the TARDIS, but this can be read without any knowledge of the Big Finish audios. What I love about this fic is that it feels like a Big Finish audio or even an old serial with Five in it. There's action, witty quips and a paradox that needs to be fixed or else. I highly recommend this for Classic Who fans.

Felis Catus Temporus

Story: Felis Catus Temporus
Author: Lissy_Strata
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6032
Author's Summary: The Doctor needs Peri's help, but can she stop laughing long enough? (This fic has evolved into a series of unrelated cat stories.)
Character/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Third Doctor, Second Doctor, Eleventh Doctor, Peri Brown, Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa, Ace McShane, Second doctor, Polly Wright, Ben Jackson, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Delgado!Master, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Sarah-Jane Smith, K-9
Warnings: Kitties

Recced Because:

Awwww, who's a kitty! Mostly the Doctor. Though several companions, enemies, and by-standers are also affected by acute Felis Catus Temporus in this adorable sequence of fic which answers several important, kitty-related questions such as: What happens when K-9 meets a kitty? Do kitties get along with nitro-9? Can you put a kitty in a fez?

If you want to know, read on and find out (just be aware that the resulting cute may leave you incapacitated with kitty!love for an unspecified duration…)

rec: Hope and Dust by padawanpooh

Story: Hope and Dust

Rating: All ages
Word Count: 509
Author's Summary: Nyssa and Tegan in a quiet moment on the Saturnian moon Tethys.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Tegan Jovanka
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a beautiful, brief vignette that quietly says a lot in a few words, capturing a sense of both science and wonder, of the friendship between Nyssa and Tegan – and a foreshadowing of what will cause them to give up the ability to explore space and time like this.

Story: The Body Snatchers (or How the Master finally got inside the Doctor's body)
Author: aralias
Rating: Adult

Author's Summary: Wacky body swap fic. Featuring some plot, and quite a lot of sex.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: I'm sorry that this is a bit plot-what-plot-ish, but it was too fantastic to pass up. Hilarious, full of ridiculous farce and fanservice for all the Doctor/Master shippers out there. Need I say more?

Flight by ponygirl

Title: Flight
Author: ponygirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1062
Author's Summary: It's not her father's two-seater plane, but it will do.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan, Fifth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: I love how it just throws the user right into the action, telling a much longer story in a few short scenes. The visual style and details bring the action to life, and the characterization is wonderful. It's great to see Tegan's history with aviation, and her fortitude. We all remember the Doctor's words of "Brave Heart, Tegan" but it's nice to be reminded once in a while that she is exactly that.

Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2636
Author's Summary: Tegan's on an unexpected Christmas shopping trip with the wrong Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (5th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's time to break out the Christmas recs!  And what a great story to start with.  Tegan and the First Doctor bond over Christmas shopping, and it's festive in the very best of ways: by having as its focus two characters who are thrown together and end up having a huge amount of fun.  At Christmas.  With costumes and mince pies and department stores.  I read this with a smile on my face the whole way through, because Tegan and the First Doctor just work so well together that I can absolutely see this happening.  Go forth and read!

Story: Two Gingers and an Australian walk into the lingerie department
Author: LunaRowena

Word Count: 3499
Author's Summary: "Tegan," said the Doctor. "You could have just told me what you wanted to go shopping for. I've lived with a lot of women over the years. I'm not a complete stranger to undergarments." Turlough continued to be fascinated by the ceiling.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, Turlough, Donna Noble, Five, Ten
Warnings: None

Recced because:

When I first read this, I ending up shooting tea out through my nose laughing. The fic was then instantly bookmarked for whenever I recced Calufrax next and I've read it several times whenever I need a good cheer-up. Why do I love this fic? It has some of the best Tegan and Turlough bickering I've ever seen in fic, a mash-up of two great eras, a bit of thought on the practicalities of TARDIS travel, and a really great tip on how to save your under wires from destruction while adventuring across the universe.

Also, it has koalas.

The Magic Door by LilacFree

Sorry for not posting yesterday. It is a bit less hectic here now, so I might just get round to the rest of my reccing scheme.

Story: The Magic Door
Author:LilacFree
Rating:All Ages
Word Count: 1396
Author's Summary:Tegan is lost in Scotland and has an interesting encounter with a kilt-wearing Clansman
Characters/pairings:Jamie McCrimmon, Nyssa, Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th)
warnings:None

Recced Because: I love multi-era fics where characters, particularly companions, meet who've never met before. It is so much fun to see them interacting together, bickering about the Doctor and boasting about their travels. While this fic has little bickering and boasting, it does the interacting part brilliantly. The Author manages to combine two entirely different eras of Doctor Who in a really clever way. To this extend the summary is a bit misleading, probably on purpose. I'm going to leave it that way, and try to write without spoiling.

This story, while seen through the eyes of Tegan, is actually an exploration of another much loved character. Jamie here is portrayed in an original way, allowing his incredible sense of wonder to take centre stage. He is one of my favourite characters on the entire show, and the way he is portrayed here, while very different to how he was in the series, rings true to his character.

Some names are spelled non-canonically, but don't let that put you off. The author knows the characters and creates a heartwarming little tale. I can't really say anything more without spoiling it, so you should just go and read it now, because it is magical.

Rec: Ten Times the Doctor Hates the Daleks by Derek Metaltron

Story: Ten Times the Doctor Hates the Daleks
Author: Derek Metaltron
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,871
Author's Summary: Across ten incarnations the Doctor has faced a enemy who has cost him friends and allies, planets and stars, his very home world. They are the Daleks, and these are ten tales of how he has learnt to hate them.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctors (1st to 10th), various companions and supporting characters, Davros and the Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'll admit to something of a fannish obsession with the Daleks. Not so much the Daleks as we see them most of the time on screen, but the idea of the Daleks. Because it really is a great concept, and a fantastically horrible one when you really think about it. Which I have, probably a bit too much. The thing about the Daleks, however, while I obviously reject vehemently the idea current in fandom that it's possible to see them too often in the series, is that they rarely live up to the power of the concept in their TV outings. Often they fill a role that could be played by any generic aliens and/or robots with a bit of a search-and-replace on the script. And that, I often find, is where good fanfic comes in.

Whether the Daleks obsess the rest of you as much as they do me or not (I suspect not, in most cases!), they do occupy a unique place in the history of Doctor Who, both in-universe and in terms of the lifespan of the series itself. They're the original Who monsters, and still the benchmark against which new pretenders are measured. Even the Cybermen, probably the second most iconic Who monsters, were originally an attempt to find "the next Daleks". And in story terms, the Doctor already had an ultimate archenemy - he knew it and perhaps more importantly they knew it - long before the Master ever showed up and started telling people to obey him. I'll be very disappointed if they don't play a prominent role in the 50th Anniversary story.

And this excellent fic meditates upon that idea, the pivotal and perhaps unique role the Daleks have played in the Doctors lives, through examining the way the Doctor reacts to them. I don't think it's unwarranted to talk, as the fic does, about the Doctor hating the Daleks. Look at Nine's spitting fury in the new series episode Dalek for Exhibit A. We perhaps don't like to think as fans about the Doctor hating anybody, he's meant to be better than that and to hold himself to a higher standard - and the fic explores that as well. As much as the Doctor has been subjected again and again to the Daleks' ingrained evil, their murderous and destructive deeds again and again, he still doubts that giving in to hating them, and doing to them what that implies, is something he should be doing. It's the same moral dilemma posed by the famous scene from Genesis - does he have that right? Does feeling for them what they feel for him make him as bad as they are? This fic examines that idea through the eyes of all ten Doctors extant at the time it was written, and comes back to that essential truth about the Doctor and his relationship with his greatest enemies. As much as they've done, and as much as he's seen of that, as much pain as they've caused him, at the end he is better than they are, in moral terms, so he'll always have that doubt, and always hold back, and end up always having to fight them again.

It's a fic I really like, anyway. Please go and read it, and please leave some words for the author.

Author's Summary: Recovering in a very unusual hospital brings the fifth Doctor and Tegan a bit closer.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Tegan, hints of Five/Tegan
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It's cheating a bit because it was written partly to a request of mine for lizard aliens. And there are wonderful, tetchy lizard alien doctors, and Tegan being loopy, and the Doctor being in the way, in a hospital that kind of makes me want to get injured on a fantastic adventure so I could end up there. It's fluffy and silly and fun with just the right undercurrent of UST for the pair.

Recced because: To round off the week, a return to the multi-era ensemble cast - just look at that list of characters!  Full disclosure requires me to say that the author is one of my friends, but this is one of those stories that I'd have to admit to loving were it written by my worst enemy.  Plot takes a backseat to a beautifully-written interlude of friendships and nostalgia that still manages to feel fresh, and the interactions between the Doctor's former companions and friends are delightfully genuine.  I particularly love the portrayal of Amy, who bounces around full of teasing energy but clearly holds a great deal of affection for the Doctor - and, of course, the centre of the story is the eternal relationship between the Doctor and Sarah, which is dealt with in a sensitive and nuanced manner.  It really is one of my favourite stories, and one that reminds me just why I love the show so much.

Thank you for having me for the week, guys, and if you enjoy the recs then don't forget to go and tell the authors all about it!

Story: It Shouldn't Happen to a Time Lord
Author: Grace157

Characters: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), Turlough
Author's Summary: In a case of mistaken identity, the Doctor and Tristan Farnon each end up experiencing a day in the other's life.
Cracky crossover with All Creatures Great & Small.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I like crossovers, and was a fan of the late James Herriot's books and the TV show derived from them. So this crossover, in which the fifth Doctor meets a look-alike vet, works very well for me. It's a bonus that it's by an author who hasn't been recced here before.

‘Where are we going, Doctor?’ Tegan asked, watching the time rotor in the centre of the console rise and fall as the TARDIS dematerialised.

The Doctor activated the dimensional stabilisers to aid their flight. ‘Somewhere quiet and peaceful. I think we could all do with a little holiday, don’t you?’

‘I’m not sure that’s wise,’ said Turlough, watching him begin to set the coordinates, ‘since it seems that every time you try to take us to a place where there aren’t any hostile locals, lethal radiation levels or laws against wearing brightly-coloured socks-’ He paused to give Tegan an unimpressed look as she tried and failed to hide a smirk. ‘-we end up being faced with precisely that.’

The Doctor looked down at the monitor so he wouldn’t have to meet his eyes. ‘Yes, I’m afraid I’d forgotten that fluorescent green is a sacred colour on the planet Mergorax. But let’s not dwell on our mistakes, shall we?’ He realised the little screen was showing Earth, the planet they were now currently orbiting around. That was strange; he didn’t remember setting the coordinates for here. Either he’d become so used to typing the number in that it had become second nature and he’d done it absentmindedly or the TARDIS had decided to bring them here anyway.
