Story: He Laughs
Author: LilacFree
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 106
Author's Summary: This is nearly a poem, I think, and is a look at the Ainley Master on his debut in 'Logopolis'.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, Fourth Doctor, the Master (Ainley version)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because I was just going through my Favorites on Teaspoon tonight, glancing at some new gems I added to my list last night/early this morning, and rediscovered this beauty. And I was profoundly relieved to see that no one else has recced it yet.

Anyway. I've recently begun familiarizing myself with Ainley's version of the Master, and my friends will readily attest to how quickly I've become hooked on him. This is a brief, and incredibly chilling, glimpse of him during one of my favorite episodes. For anyone who doesn't happen to know this version of the character yet...well, this pretty much sums him up!

Story: It Worked On Paper
Author: LilacFree
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 195
Author's Summary: The Fifith Doctor seems to have trouble hanging on to useful gadgets. In this story, another item goes the way of the sonic screwdriver.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Somehow this morning feels like exactly the moment for a bit of humour and Fifth Doctor-love, and, funnily enough, I had this already lined up to rec, and it’s a little gem. You see, Five just can’t get away with things the way his future selves will…

Sorry for not posting yesterday. It is a bit less hectic here now, so I might just get round to the rest of my reccing scheme.

Story: The Magic Door
Author:LilacFree
Rating:All Ages
Word Count: 1396
Author's Summary:Tegan is lost in Scotland and has an interesting encounter with a kilt-wearing Clansman
Characters/pairings:Jamie McCrimmon, Nyssa, Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th)
warnings:None

Recced Because: I love multi-era fics where characters, particularly companions, meet who've never met before. It is so much fun to see them interacting together, bickering about the Doctor and boasting about their travels. While this fic has little bickering and boasting, it does the interacting part brilliantly. The Author manages to combine two entirely different eras of Doctor Who in a really clever way. To this extend the summary is a bit misleading, probably on purpose. I'm going to leave it that way, and try to write without spoiling.

This story, while seen through the eyes of Tegan, is actually an exploration of another much loved character. Jamie here is portrayed in an original way, allowing his incredible sense of wonder to take centre stage. He is one of my favourite characters on the entire show, and the way he is portrayed here, while very different to how he was in the series, rings true to his character.

Some names are spelled non-canonically, but don't let that put you off. The author knows the characters and creates a heartwarming little tale. I can't really say anything more without spoiling it, so you should just go and read it now, because it is magical.

Title: Walking the Labyrinth.
Author: LilacFree.
Characters/Pairings: 4th Doctor, Adric, K9, Tegan Jovanka, the Master (Ainsley).
Rating: All ages.
Warnings: None.
Word Count: 3419.
Summary: Doctor who? Has any one else ever walked into the TARDIS without having met the Doctor? This story is an attempt to walk in Tegan's high-heeled shoes. It follows canon from the 4th Doctor episode 'Logopolis' fairly closely, with a couple of additions.
Follows my story 'First Step' and is part of the same series. It also draws from the drabble 'He Laughs'.

Recced Because: Taking a couple of scenes from Logopolis where not much happens other than Tegan exploring, getting lost and frightened, in the TARDIS before she has met the Doctor and turns it into an effective character study. I like to see this both as Tegan working through her fears but also as a study of the Doctor by means of the TARDIS. The author makes use to two meanings for the labyrinth: meditation tool, and location for the Theseus and the Minotaur myth, with the Master as the Minotaur.

Story: Tread But Lightly (In These Cruel Shoes)
Author: Lilacfree
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Set during Castrovalva and looks at the start of Tegan and Nyssa's friendship.
Characters: Tegan, Nyssa
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~1,800 words

Recced because: A beautiful little story set during Castrovalva, where Tegan and Nyssa bond over shared horrors perpetuated by the Master, their stories woven together with fairytales and histories. The use of language is fanciful and playful, there's interesting use of repetition of theme throughout, and both girls come off very true to character. It's light and dark in alternating moments, and altogether a unique and clever character study for two women who deserve this sort of fic treatment.

Story: The Music Lover
Author: LilacFree
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 437
Author's Summary: A brief look at Susan and what it's like being a teenaged alien on Earth.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's an unfortunately short but really lovely look at Susan Foreman, and why she loves Earth so much. Susan doesn't get much attention in fanfiction, perhaps because her tenure was so short and so early, but there are still so many unanswered questions about her background and her life that even a short piece like this can really illuminate her character. LilacFree also has a knack for interesting turns of phrase that I'll let you discover yourself.

Story: Time May Change Me
Author: LilacFree
Rating: unrated (probably either All Ages or Teen)
Author's summary: The Doctor has a regeneration relapse.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Brigadier, Sixth Doctor, Jack, Fifth Doctor, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: nothing more than a little bit of Jackish innuendo

Recced because: It has the most amusing summing up of the end of Doomsday ever:

“Alas, Rose. Not dead, yet parted from me by the gulf of the infinite void, trapped in a parallel Universe with her mother, her parallel not-dead father, her ex-boyfriend, and a baby.”

But seriously, this fic never fails to make me giggle. It starts out with the Doctor waking up shortly after The Runaway Bride only to find that he's back to being Christopher Eccleston again. Not only that, but whenever he loses consciousness he goes back an incarnation. (The above quote comes from the Sixth Doctor) And he's just developed an unfortunate tendency to faint...

It's not a perfect fic, I'll admit. LilacFree refers to the various incarnation by their number (Nine, Eight, Seven and so on) which can be jarring at first. But it's a very fun multi-Doctor romp that nearly everyone should be able to enjoy.

Story: The Winter of Her Discontent
Author: LilacFree
Rating: All Ages (though I'd personally call it Teen)
Author's summary: AU after 'The Five Doctors'. The Doctor is going home to be President, and he's bringing his primitive little friends Tegan and Turlough with him. Will Gallifrey survive? Contains non-explicit adult situations.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Turlough, Leela (Pairing: Five/Tegan)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I absolutely adore stories that explore Gallifrey. This story takes the Gallifrey you hear about in the novels and on the series and turns it on its ear, giving it a depth that makes it so incredibly real. I love all the nuances that make it so alien from any culture that we would consider normal. I also absolutely adore LilacFree's Tegan. I love how she manoeuvres through the political intrigue on Gallifrey and I love how it enhances the relationship between Five and Tegan. Gorgeous prose, clever storyline, and a story that I adore reading again and again. I highly recommend this story to anyone who loves Gallifrey and who loves Five/Tegan.

Story: Transit of Venus
Author: LilacFree
Rating: not given, but it's got to be All Ages
Author's summary: Who are you when you're not the man you used to be? Who created the Universe? And can a girl who was raised to be a human computer find happiness in a commune with a boy in a skirt and a Beatle in a gi?
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie, Zoe
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's cute and sweet, in the best possible way. First there are looks at Jamie, Zoe, and the Doctor as individuals, where each character considers an issue unique to his or her situation. Then there's group interaction that shows what an incredible team these three make. No mortal danger or running for their lives; just nice character work. And if you ever wondered where the Doctor learned Venusian aikido, here's your answer. After reading this story, my first impulse was to go and watch the Second Doctor serials I haven't yet seen.
