It's been fun reccing again and I hope everyone has enjoyed these stories as much as I have. (And if you did, don't forget to thank the authors with a nice review!) One more little drabble to rec before my stint is over:

Story: I Can't Stand
Author: merripestin
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 117
Characters: Third Doctor, Jo Grant
Author's summary: Without Jo to make the tea. (hate challenge drabble for lj:dw100)
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a poignant vignette of a moment from an ordinary day for the Third Doctor after Jo has left. In a just a few simple sentences, it beautifully paints a picture of how much he misses her. A top notch, heartbreaking little piece.

Story: Surprises
Author: Selena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1749
Author's Summary: Five times Jo Grant surprised the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: none

Recced because: First, this story was recced previously, in around April 2009. However, since the original reccer's LJ and posts to this comm were deleted, I received the go-ahead to select this fic again. It focuses on the relationship between the Doctor and Jo, an underrated companion in my opinion. The author gets her voice just right and highlights her best qualities. While the first four sections are set during the Third Doctor era, the final part features a bittersweet time jump with an older Jo who remains perfectly in character.

Recc'ed Because: This is such a lovely little story about friendship, focusing on the Brigadier.

Hello again! I'm here to rec all the way up to Christmas and the Christmas special, so let's go! I wanted to rec this fic the last time I recced here, but I hit my maximum number of recs. Here it is now:

Story: Venusian Aikido and Associated Disciplines
Author: Sproid
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1631
Author's Summary: Featuring Benton learning fancy karate from the Doctor, and an annoyed Brigadier who keeps walking in on them with their hands all over each other.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/John Benton, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart/John Benton/Third Doctor, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart/John Benton, Corporal Bell/Jo Grant, John Benton/Mike Yates
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: I love the interactions between Three and the UNIT crew featured here. I also like how the fic features Three's signature* Venusian aikido and shows him teaching it to others, not against the Villain of a Serial. And a jealous Brig tickles my id.

Venusian aikido is mostly featured in Three's serials, but other Doctors have used it in expanded material

Author's Summary: Done as a prompt for someone who wanted to see Three and Sarah in a romantic setting with mentions of clothes and their age gap. Of course, knowing me, it had to have a twist.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/Third Doctor
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: The twist in this fic is a bit sinister--but not too sinister. And I love this otherwise, calm, quiet look at Three and Sarah Jane's relationship.

Story: The Renegade Tourbus
Author: Neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1809
Author's Summary: “Matrix archives: mailing list section. Fragments from the 'Gallifreyan Expatriate Circular', commonly referred to as the 'GEC'.”
Characters: Iris Wildthyme, Romana II, The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (5th), The War Chief, Drax, The Master (Ainley), The Meddling Monk, The Rani
Pairings: a touch of Doctor/Master, but it’s comedic (and might, if we believe the Doctor, be a Trolling Turlough—a Trollough?) and doesn’t actually get to the warned-for Explicit (Chat) Sex: this is an ensemble piece uber alles
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because:

All the renegades have a mailing list, which Iris Wildthyme trolls. How many renegades? “To answer your question (more for the benefit of others interested) there are currently nine _official_ members of the list, of which only five are usually active. The other four are grandfathered from the original list created by Omega and distributed from the anti-matter universe.

Yes, before you ask, we do still distribute to all known universes. This is very difficult, technically speaking, and is also why I am moderator and not, for instance, Drax.” ←The Rani moderates. This fic spans several early Doctors’ worth of canon, and is fun for Three’s breezy email-voice alone.

“To: GEC list
From: morbius.brain.of
Subject: please remove

I, Morbius, am returned from the grave! And all I see in my inbox is spam from this list. I no longer wish to receive messages.

To: GEC list

Could you take me off here too, please? I think the Doctor added me without my permission.

Story: The Eggs of Destruction
Author: Primsong
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 33,461
Author's Summary: The Third Doctor and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, searching for a possible Silurian outpost on the Isle of Wight, discover more trouble than they had bargained on when someone begins using the local population of seagulls as weapons.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sergeant Benton, Sea Devils
Warnings: None.

Recced because: One of the (many) things this author excels at is fic that reads like a pitch-perfect missing adventure, and this is certainly no exception. Add to that a carefully researched setting, that it's in effect also a wonderful exploration and celebration of the Doctor and the Brigadier’s relationship, cap it off with a whole lot of punning chapter titles, and, really, the whole thing is just a complete joy from start to finish.

Story: Home?
Author: vvj5
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 8360 words
Author's Summary: Donna asks a reasonable question and the Doctor bends the laws of Time and Space to answer it. Which obviously involves two Doctors, UNIT, the Master and a nasty mess in the space/time continuum.
Characters/Pairings: The Third Doctor, the Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Jo Grant, John Benton, Mike Yates
Warnings: None stated

Recced because: I love this story! The various interactions between the characters are hilarious and their voices spot on. I must confess to a special fondness for The Brig and Donna interacting with each other. I think they would have got along wonderfully if they ever had had a chance to meet. But there are several delightful scenes here, the Doctors bickering with each other, Jo realising that Ten is the Doctor and the Doctors joining forces to annoy the Master, for example.

Story: Friends In High Places
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1753 words
Author's Summary: In which Torchwood completely fail to locate the Doctor while he's pretty much on their doorstep.
Characters/Pairings: The Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Jack Harkness, Donna Noble, the Tenth Doctor, The Master (Delgado), River Song, the TARDIS
Warnings: None stated

Recced because: The Doctor is thinking of getting a pet snake, the Brigadier fudge personal files and the Master takes a part time job at Torchwood. What is not to love? The fic consist of a couple of short scenes with various characters that are described spot on and why they want to find, or hide, the Doctor. I laughed out loud several times while reading it.

Story: Self-Preservation
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: teen
Word count: 16429
Characters: Delgado!master, Three, Simm!master
Summary: Running for his life with the Master, the Doctor finds someone he just can't leave behind.
Warnings: This fic is part of a well balanced diet of angst and cuteness. The Master gets a bit beaten up (off screen abuse of the insane on backwater planets) and there is a small bit of violence towards the Doctor, but I don't think it's anything major. Just a bit of choking, really.

Recced because: Self-Preservation features two incarnations of the Master, and Memory Dragon writes them both splendidly (though of course, anything Memory Dragon writes with the Master is guaranteed goodness). This fic shows the trust between the 3rd doctor and his master, something that has been lost in their later regenerations, and the mercurial nature of simm!master, and offers a believable explanation for how Delgado becomes who he will be. The story is very much one of contrasts, a moment of truce in a conflict that almost feels like a farce because it's obvious in this fic that Three and his master don't hate each other - rather the opposite. The concern the 3rd doctor and Delgado!master show for each other only underscores how bitter their battles will become. The conversation between the two Masters was also well done, with Delgado characteristically dismissive of his older self's melodrama. And the ending is excellent.

I could go on about it all day -- go ahead and read it!

Recced because: If you're looking for a surprising and different side to the Master, you'll find it within this story. It was quite unexpected--after all, this is the Master we're talking about--but I could still see something like this happening. And I really enjoyed it. I'm sure you will, too!

Story: The Doctor Cooks (The Eleventh Time Lucky Remix)
Author: paranoidangel
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3264
Author's Summary: The Doctor offers to cook dinner for Amy and Rory. What could go wrong?
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams, First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Heriot, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Fifth Doctor, Tegan Jovanka, Nyssa, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Seventh Doctor, Ace McShane, Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble.
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor claims he can cook. Actually, as it turns out, the Doctor has always claimed that he could cook. This fic starts off with the Eleventh Doctor promising to cook a special meal for Amy and Rory, and then moves on to a series of flashbacks that show past Doctors, past companions, and past culinary (mis)adventures. Much of it is very funny, but there is also a wonderful depth to the writing, especially in the framing story of Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

Recced because: Regardless of how people might feel about the use of Churchill in Doctor Who, this is a smashing fic that looks at how and when he met the Doctor (and when the Doctor met him, which isn’t the same thing), and feels as if it gets so much in, that I can’t believe the total word count is a brief as it is. Oh, and the best bit? The tantalising hints about how the Doctor got on with the other Prime Ministers…

Author's Summary: Twelve gets careless in the lab and accidentally whips up a space/time paradox. The Brigadier is not amused. (Shameless multi-era sass fest.)
Warnings: None

Recced Because:

It's funny. It's really, really, really funny. Lyaka has written a comedy of witty sass, dark humour, forbidden love, and enough snark to cause a temporal paradox. Watching Doctors from different eras bicker at each other is something I always enjoy, and this fic delivers on that premise in spades. I dare you to get through it without giggling.

Story: The Power of Cake
Author: liadt
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,206
Author's Summary: Two Time Lords chained to each other and covered in cake seek shelter in George Bulman's shop. George is not impressed. A cakefic crossover with the UK television series 'Bulman' (1985-87).
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (7th), crossover characters
Warnings: None, unless naked Doctors really don't agree with you.

Recced because: Once upon a time there was a small but plucky Doctor Who forum called Death by Aspirin (it's still going if you want to search for it out of idle curiosity), and there, due to a slight misunderstanding one day, one of the regular posters accidentally invented a new fic meme which featured two Doctors (preferably Ten and Three, to begin with) chained to each other, one of them naked, both covered in cake. Oh, and it had to be all the Master's doing. I'm sure we've all accidentally invented fic memes like that in our time. ;)

And lo, the members of the forum thought that the meme was good and they did adopt the meme and embroider the meme and try different combinations of Doctors and other characters and ever more baroque explanations for how the chains and the nakedness and the cake became involved. Eventually, the subgenre even got its own community right here on Livejournal: http://cakefic.livejournal.com/

And then, the author of tonight's fic rec decided to write a crossover mashing up the cakefic meme with a perhaps undeservedly obscure 80s British TV series Bulman. George Kitchener Bulman was a retired police detective turned clock repairman/private eye and probably the most eccentric character in a genre full of eccentric characters. His titular series was actually a spinoff of a spinoff, strangely enough, and he was played by acting legend Don Henderson a.k.a the raw-meat-chewing, rocking-chair-appreciating Gavrok out of Delta and the Bannermen a.k.a. that bloke sitting at the table in the original Star Wars who isn't too impressed by the Death Star.

And a most amusing fic it is as well. You don't even have to be as familiar with the crossover series as I am (which is to say, only a very little bit in my hazy memories of long-ago telly) to appreciate the off-the-wall world of Bulman and be tickled pink by the idea that two Time Lords covered in cake and chains stumbling into the shop isn't the weirdest thing going on in that particular milieu. Also noteworthy is the way Three maintains his poise and essential Three-ness even in this unfortunate predicament while Seven is, of course, completely unfazed by the fact that he is not only covered in cake and handcuffs but also has somehow lost all of his clothing apart from his signature headgear. Go and read it, anyway, chuckle to yourselves and then tell the author how much you dig it and now want to watch Bulman. Worth it for the line about "despairing maniacal laughter" alone. :)

Story: A Fleeting Passion for Facial Hair
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1564
Author's Summary: A very serious multi-era fic about the Master's beards.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Master (Ainley), The Master (Delgado), The Master (Other)
Warnings: Humor

Recced because: Okay, this is sheer Crack. I mean, I read this and I laughed so hard, I think I sprained my ribs. Sadly the author has never acknowledged the bill for that, but she did post this at Teaspoon, just so I could rec it for you here. *Beams*

This is a Very Serious observation about the Master and his Beardiness (and sometimes lack thereof) throughout his own regenerations. His pursuit of the Perfect Facial 'Do - and the Doctor's mixed (and heartfelt) reactions throughout. Even if you have never seen Classic Who , I'm sure this will still be a laugh. I know at the very least, you might've seen pictures of the Master and his various attempts to decorate his chin with luxurious, artistic (and under-appreciated) styles that can only be admired by the true believers in the masterful pun intended expression of...of hair on one's face. But if you still need convincing -

Story: Moving Day
Author: eve11
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 738
Author's Summary: "As it happens, my exile has been rescinded."
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: Drabble, Missing Scene, Vignette

Recced because: I love the Third Doctor. As a toddler, he was one of my clearest memories. Dashing, mysterious, handsome, slightly prickly and debonair. His Doctor always had that disapproving set to his mouth, but his eyes twinkled like he knew a good joke and his sharp tongue covered a big heart (and a lot of sorrow). He was my first 'James Bond' and the best one ever as far as I am concerned.

It's really hard to capture that. It is easier to remember the acerbic tongue and sharp wit that was often used to lash out - and really hard to remember that sometimes, that's the sound of someone who needs a friend. The Doctor of this era had a lot of friends, but not many of them were able to stand up to him. Not many of them had an intelligence to rival his. Liz was one of those people. Sadly, she moved on - for a variety of reasons, though it was more than heavily hinted that her 'bitter rivalry' with the Doctor for head of the science division was one of them. It was all to easy to remember that - and forget that Liz left behind all that she knew, as well as a potential friendship with the Doctor. She moved on and did bigger and better things. But sometimes, it doesn't hurt to have old friends drop by for a visit. And sometimes old hurts can be forgotten and new friendships forged upon the fire of fond absence.

A small excerpt here... )

Ahh, yes - MARVELOUS. And a perfect way to ease the sting of Liz's departure. This was another goodie, folks - please stop by and tell the author how they made you smile. It will likely make THEM smile (and then...they'll MAKE MORE. *Nods*)

Word Count: 1,222
Author's Summary: A girl’s got to keep herself in platform boots and plastic daffodils, after all.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings: none

Recced because: I'm genuinely shocked this hasn't been recced yet, but all that means is that I get the pleasure of doing so myself. Jo often doesn't get enough credit as a companion; she's perceived as "the ditzy one," and sure, she can be a bit flighty, but what if that's just a characteristic masking a far darker talent? After all, no one said assassins for hire had to be dour, serious folks; they could just as easily cheerfully stab someone with a knitting needle or feed someone some festively decorated poison cakes. And thus Jo acquires a new backstory I'm perfectly willing to believe is true, although I suppose your mileage may vary there.

Author's Summary: The Brigadier has his hands full when an alien escape pod lands.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart/Liz Shaw, Captain Yates, Jo Grant, Third Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: UNIT is used to dealing with the strange and unusual, but not always peacefully ... which makes the arrival of an alien baby more than a little confounding, especially for the Brigadier. He might have a daughter of his own, but that doesn't necessarily make him comfortable dealing with an alien infant, and his substitute for a temporarily absent Doctor – Liz Shaw – isn't entirely happy at being drawn back into UNIT's unique brand of chaos, either. (Not in the least because it reminds her of certain inappropriate feelings she'd had for her supervisor.) But the plot isn't why you should read this story, although it's a good one; no, you should read it because it's really a sweet-natured character piece with emotional depth for both the Brig and Liz, written with such thoughtful attention to voice that I had no trouble hearing each character speak in my head.

Story: Awkward Questions
Author: Gary Merchant
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 996
Author's Summary: Not even the Doctor can answer everything.
Characters:Adric, Grace Holloway, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Nyssa, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)

Recced because:It's a play on the numerous (intentional) plot holes and is-it-canon-or-not-canon-questions all Whovians have to deal with at some point. With fifty years of series, not everything always makes sense. Two events from the history of the show can completely contradict each other and still both be awesome (a big cheer for timey-wimey stuff!). This fic takes that fact and runs with it, exploring 8 different scenes from Doctors 1 to 8 with humour and wit. The scenes used here are (in)famous throughout the fandom, and reading about them brought a knowing smile to my face. It's under a thousand words, so even if you're in a hurry, check it out. And if you like it, there is a sequel too!

Story: Ten Times the Doctor Hates the Daleks
Author: Derek Metaltron
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,871
Author's Summary: Across ten incarnations the Doctor has faced a enemy who has cost him friends and allies, planets and stars, his very home world. They are the Daleks, and these are ten tales of how he has learnt to hate them.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctors (1st to 10th), various companions and supporting characters, Davros and the Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'll admit to something of a fannish obsession with the Daleks. Not so much the Daleks as we see them most of the time on screen, but the idea of the Daleks. Because it really is a great concept, and a fantastically horrible one when you really think about it. Which I have, probably a bit too much. The thing about the Daleks, however, while I obviously reject vehemently the idea current in fandom that it's possible to see them too often in the series, is that they rarely live up to the power of the concept in their TV outings. Often they fill a role that could be played by any generic aliens and/or robots with a bit of a search-and-replace on the script. And that, I often find, is where good fanfic comes in.

Whether the Daleks obsess the rest of you as much as they do me or not (I suspect not, in most cases!), they do occupy a unique place in the history of Doctor Who, both in-universe and in terms of the lifespan of the series itself. They're the original Who monsters, and still the benchmark against which new pretenders are measured. Even the Cybermen, probably the second most iconic Who monsters, were originally an attempt to find "the next Daleks". And in story terms, the Doctor already had an ultimate archenemy - he knew it and perhaps more importantly they knew it - long before the Master ever showed up and started telling people to obey him. I'll be very disappointed if they don't play a prominent role in the 50th Anniversary story.

And this excellent fic meditates upon that idea, the pivotal and perhaps unique role the Daleks have played in the Doctors lives, through examining the way the Doctor reacts to them. I don't think it's unwarranted to talk, as the fic does, about the Doctor hating the Daleks. Look at Nine's spitting fury in the new series episode Dalek for Exhibit A. We perhaps don't like to think as fans about the Doctor hating anybody, he's meant to be better than that and to hold himself to a higher standard - and the fic explores that as well. As much as the Doctor has been subjected again and again to the Daleks' ingrained evil, their murderous and destructive deeds again and again, he still doubts that giving in to hating them, and doing to them what that implies, is something he should be doing. It's the same moral dilemma posed by the famous scene from Genesis - does he have that right? Does feeling for them what they feel for him make him as bad as they are? This fic examines that idea through the eyes of all ten Doctors extant at the time it was written, and comes back to that essential truth about the Doctor and his relationship with his greatest enemies. As much as they've done, and as much as he's seen of that, as much pain as they've caused him, at the end he is better than they are, in moral terms, so he'll always have that doubt, and always hold back, and end up always having to fight them again.

It's a fic I really like, anyway. Please go and read it, and please leave some words for the author.

Story: Prey of the Cheetahs
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5869
Author’s Summary: There are strange things happening at Cambridge, and they seem to be connected with the appearance of a black cat. (A Three-era retelling of Survival.)
Characters/Pairings: Three/Delgado!Master (also Three/Cheetah!Delgado!Master); the Brigadier, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, and Sergeant Benton
Warnings: none

Recced because: Do you like cats? Do you enjoy this pairing? Then you, like I, probably spent the entirety of Survival with your jaw unhinged at the sheer amount of slash on the screen. I love the fandom trend of rewriting Survival with different Doctors and Masters, and this Three-era retelling shines, with well-written dialogue and characterization. For bonus points, it showcases the old-school UNIT crew, even to the point of including both Liz AND Jo. It’s just a shame there will never be a televised episode in which Delgado gets to rub up against Pertwee like an oversized cat.

Hello, Calufrax! I’m [livejournal.com profile] lyakahime (Lyaka on the Teaspoon). Thanks for having me. I’m a shipper, so most of what I rec will have some kind of relationship in it, but I’ve got a mix of pairings at the ready to entertain a variety of tastes. And now, without further ado…

Story: Placebo Effect
Author: Bagheera
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2411
Author’s Summary: The Master falls into his own trap.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master, the old-school UNIT crew
Warnings: None

Recced because: Lighthearted without being frivolous, humorous without being cracky, and introspective without being melancholy, this lovely little fic has such perfect balance that everything seems effortless. There’s a real skill in taking one of the oldest, most overwrought clichés in the book – in this case, the mythical soul-bonding stone – and turning it into something that’s not only plausible, but has the reader cheering along. (How does she do this? The title provides a clue.)

Optimism and cheer are the tone of the fic, but there are currents hiding underneath that make me keep coming back to reread it. Insecurity is a powerful demon and one that never seems to quite stay dead. I’ve struggled with it, and I know many other fans do too. Beneath the good humor and banter, the deeper themes of self-esteem and security are deftly handled here, and the whole poses questions each reader will answer differently.

Title: The Time Lord's Handbook of Regeneration
Author: Awdures
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3799
Author's Summary: The Doctor really does never have simple, easy regenerations. There's a good reason for that.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1 through 11
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: The Doctor's regenerations over the years are the change points that help define both his continuity and his differences. I must admit when I was confronted with the vast history of Classic Who after being introduced through New Who, my first instinct was not to watch in order but to start with all of the endings. And as such, with all of the beginnings as well. This is a series of vignettes that take us through each experience, at the best what may be considered an appendix of cautionary tales for the titular pamphlet. One constant amid the change: the Doctor never does anything by the book.

Title: Two Hours/Eventually
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4643
Author's Summary: Josie meets the Doctor for the first time.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor (Inferno-verse), Josephine Grant (Inferno-verse)
Warnings: References to violence and sexual assault.

Recc'ed Because: This is a pre-quel story in the author's Inferno-Verse series. The second story, Two Birds in a Cage, is still a WIP, but this story give you an idea of the setting and the tone (which is magnified & more forefront in the WIP as well, so do heed warnings if you continue). It is a canon AU that takes place in the evil world the Doctor visited in the serial "Inferno", where Three is a prisoner of the fascist British government, kept deep underground and forced to build weapons for the regime, held under lock and key by evil versions of Liz Shaw and the Brigadier. This is a vignette from Josie Grant's point of view, as her privileged life has come to a horrific stop for the crime of standing up for the wrong people and losing the protection of her family. It's unflinching and dark, but also hopeful too. It deals frankly with the brutality of authoritarian states in a way that couldn't be done on a kid's show.

With all the sprawling storylines and James Bond trappings in canon, Three can be a difficult incarnation to get a grasp on for those of us who started out on the new series. Daystar Searcher has no such troubles. I think that even though it's AU, it's also a brilliant if bleak character study; what better way to learn who this Doctor really is than by taking away everything else? And here, trapped and hopeless, he's still himself, still that scientifically gruff but protective mode of his personality, with the universal characteristics we all know across his incarnations.

Though I am dearly hoping the author eventually finishes Two Birds in a Cage, this prequel makes me reluctant to re-read it, and set in stone whatever unremembered fate befalls Josie Grant.

Story: A Promise of Forever
Author: bluedawn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 9206
Author's Summary: A mysterious blonde girl keeps showing up in each of the Doctor's lives, only staying long enough each time to save his life and slowly steal his hearts. By the time he figures out who she is, is it too late for their promise of forever?
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor/Rose; 1st Doctor, 2nd Doctor, 3rd Doctor, 4th Doctor, 5th Doctor, 6th Doctor, 7th Doctor, 8th Doctor, 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Donna Noble, Ian Chesterton, Sarah Jane Smith, Donna Noble, Barbara, Susan,
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing, Non-Con (The final warning is tagged on Teaspoon, but I have yet to figure out why).

Recced because: Bluedawn's muti-era Doctor/Rose love stories are simply brilliant. The idea that the Doctor might have loved Rose throughout all of his lives is particularly appealing to me, and she captures just how bittersweet it might be to have them cross paths long before he's supposed to know her. Plus, every one of Doctor voices are unique and spot on, and Rose's interactions with each of them is priceless. Also, t's a very unusual post-Doomsday Ten/Rose reunion story.

“I ask again...who are you? What is your name? Why do you keep showing up in my life, my lives?” he asks, knowing that he probably will not receive an answer for his troubles. At least she spoke to him this time.

She merely shakes her head at him as she did in his second life and the sad smile returns.

“Can’t you stop it? Can’t you get out?” he asks, desperately hoping for both him and her that she can.

Although, it’s nice to have a defender, a sort of guardian angel, on Earth. Not that he needs her help. Of course not. But then again...

“Who says I want out?” she asks, steel replacing the sadness in her voice. “I made my choice, Doctor.” There is something in her voice when she says his name. Something that makes him nervous and excited at the same time. The air grows heavy and he has received no answers from the mysterious human. She will be gone in a second.

“What choice? When? Who are you?” He shouts a litany of questions at her, hoping she’ll answer even one.

As always, be sure to let the author know if you enjoy it!

Story: Rosemary and Time
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=41783
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: PG-13
Summary: UNIT has finally found the Master, who went missing a month ago after being wounded. Relieved to hear the news, the Doctor finds that there's something still wrong with the Master. Uses the Master’s backstory from the Doctor Who novel “The Dark Path”, but reading the novel isn’t necessary to enjoy the fic.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, (Delgado) Master, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, Doctor/Master pairing.
Warnings: None.
Recced because: Why should it always be the Doctor who loses his memory? This fic is a clever look at what would happen if the Master suffered amnesia. It’s a lovely, funny, sad, bittersweet story about what would happen if the Doctor and the Master were able to be friends again.
Excerpt: “It was, surprisingly enough, the Brigadier who made sure that no one commented or were allowed to collect on bets when Koschei had taken to sleeping in the Doctor's TARDIS, rather than the flat UNIT had provided for him. Or unsurprisingly, considering the man could be very discreet and the less said about office romances the better. The Doctor was more amused than anything, but he could tell Koschei at least appreciated the courtesy. Jo had been very put out, however, since she'd have won at least fifty pounds by his reckoning from earlier conversations he'd overheard.”

Story: Conduct Unbecoming
Author: Sproid
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7229
Characters: Sergeant Benton, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, UNIT
Author's Summary: Benton messes up, the Brigadier shouts, and it's all really a sign of their affection for each other. Not that they realise this, of course.
Warnings: Explicit Sex
Recced because: Because there is not enough UNIT love in the world. Because Benton is adorable and the Brigadier is adorable and the Brig can be awfully stern to Sergeant Puppyface, but you can just tell they're so very fond of each other, and this story is such a wonderful exploration of that fondness (and eventual hotness) as it develops over time.

Story: Imaginary Worlds (the Here I Dreamt I was an Architect remix)
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Teen (it says All Ages, but I might even go so far as to say Adult)
Word Count: 5897
Author's Summary: There is a room in the TARDIS that always stays locked. (Written for the best_enemies remix challenge.)
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master - arguably including pre-series Doctor/pre-series Master, pre-series Doctor/War Chief!Master, Three/Delgado!Master, Three/Crispy!Master and Five/Master. One thing it doesn't have is Pryce!Master, although he is listed on Teaspoon
Warnings: None listed, though there is sex and swearing and horror

Recced because: This fic was written in 2009, since when dark fairy tales and Doctor Who have become increasingly intertwined. If you like the sort of story where something terrible is presented as a good thing in beautiful, soothing language, you might like this fic - even if you think Doctor/Master isn't really your cup of tea.

I think a brief introduction is necessary, though, before you read it. This fic is a 'remix' (of sorts) of another fic I also like (Imaginary Worlds by x_los), which posits that, at some point, the young Master made a copy of the Doctor that lived in his mind and which he could interact with as though it were the real Doctor. He abandoned the copy for a time, but returned to it after the Doctor left Gallifrey/him. In the original fic, the copy/construct idea was played largely for laughs - but it's very creepy, really, particularly in a universe where thoughts can think for themselves (see- oh, I don't know... 'Castrovalva', for example).

This fic is an atmospheric and disturbing examination of that idea, and of obsession carried too far. Thus, it also functions as an excellent character study of the Master.

Story: A John Smith Situation
Author: carawj
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 954 words
Author's Summary: Emily found herself sitting in a cell, her right arm handcuffed to a young woman in an extremely short skirt, who seemed to know a hell of a lot about UNIT.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant/Emily Chaudhry, Three
Warnings: none

Recced because: Brigadier Emily Chaudhry is from the excellent Big Finish UNIT audios. Jo Grant, is, of course, our lovely and beautiful Jo Grant. Together they team up to save the world from Ogrons and go travelling in the TARDIS and do a little kissing. This little bite of a story is just so cute, and funny, and perfectly in character. Give it a try even if you haven't listened to the UNIT audios, because Chaudhry is that great , especially here - and then listen to the audios because Chaudhry is just that great!

Author: eponymous_rose
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1262
Author's Summary: This, a new world, full of alien sands and discovery.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Third Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It’s a perfect, beautiful vignette of Sarah’s very first alien planet that also plays lightly with the differing reactions of Sarah and the Doctor. What more can I say? It’s a gorgeous, brilliant little capturing of a moment and their characters. Just go and read it - you won't regret it.

I'm [livejournal.com profile] ffutures, Marcus Rowland on Teaspoon. When I began selecting stories for this week I noticed that the first two were by authors who have never appeared here before. I decided to try an experiment, and go for a full week of all-new authors. That turned out to be a LOT harder than it sounds; again and again I found that a story I liked had either been recced before, or was by an author who has been recced before. In the end I think that I've found seven good stories by previously-overlooked authors, without sacrificing any quality. Apart from that these stories are my usual mix of new-era and multi-era Who, with several crossovers. I hope that you'll enjoy them.

Story: The Orchid Thief
Author: Leviathan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 14320
Author's Summary: Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin have solved a lot of tough cases in their careers as detectives. But never one like the one that begins with the new arrival in the Plant Rooms. Before it ends, they'll deal with a tattooed lady, miniaturized corpses, and Things from Another World!
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (3rd), The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm a sucker for crossovers, and this is not only a crossover, it's a crossover with one of my favourite detective series, and it's a multi-era multi-doctor story that manages to be faithful to all of the Doctor Who and crossover characters, and pitch perfect for the historical periods in which it's set. A fun romp and one I've enjoyed immensely.

Excerpt: I was halfway through dialing the Gazette, to ask Lon Cohen if there was a new craze in collecting disused British police phones, when the doorbell rang. I cradled the phone and stepped to the hallway, looking out through the one-way glass panel.

It was a morning for things that appeared not to belong. The two people on the stoop seemed as out of place in New York as the blue box in the alley and the strange thing growing up in Wolfe's plant rooms. It was a man and woman, but they didn't seem to be a couple. The woman was black — apparently “colored” is no longer the acceptable term — and quite lovely, wearing form-fitting denim jeans and a red leather jacket. I don't read fashion magazines, and who knows what's going to come out of Carnaby Street these days, and it certainly didn't look bad, but I'd never seen an outfit that looked quite like it: it had the look of a costume. The man was taller than me, but also a lot thinner, his hands stuffed into the pockets of a brown suit with fine blue pinstripes, a long brown trenchcoat pushed open and back behind him. He had enough brown hair for a Beatle, but it was messier and less defined, more like a Rolling Stone, and large, intelligent eyes that seemed to stare right through the one-way glass into mine. As I looked at him, he raised his fingers and waggled them as if in a childish wave, grinning broadly.

I went and opened the door some ten inches, backstopping it with my foot. “Good morning.”

“Ah, yeah!” the tall man's accent was English, his voice enthusiastic, “lovely morning, really, just lovely! You're Archie Goodwin!”

“Thanks,” I told him. “I wasn't sure.”

He grinned even more broadly, looking over between me and the black girl. “See, Martha, what did I tell you? The wit, the wit, the looks-- Not so much the charm, yet, but you have to like the wit!” He turned back to me. “And young! Not that you look much older, but still, there you are, yeah?”

“Here I am,” I agreed.

“Oh, yes, you are!” he said. “Yes, you really are!”

“Well,” I said, starting to close the door, “thanks for stopping by to straighten that out for me--”

He put an easy hand on the door, his smile somehow chiding me gently, affectionately. “Oh, come on, now, be a sport! Is that any way to treat an, well, someone who will have been an old friend the first time you meet him?”

I frowned, running through the sentence in my head, and the black girl rolled her eyes and stepped forward, offering a hand. “Hello,” she said. Her accent was also English, which always sounds a little strange to me coming from a negro. “I'm Martha Jones.”

Story: The Completely True and Canon Story of How Oswin Oswald Seduced Jo Grant, or Jo Seduced Her, or Something
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,676
Author's Summary: "Jo, huh?" Oswin said. "First boy I ever kissed was named Joe."
Characters/Pairings: Oswin Oswald/Jo Grant, Third Doctor, Delgado!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: Okay, it's my second Oswin story of the week, but this one has a completely different tone and approach – and besides, how often do you get to rec a story based on that (NSFW) photo of Katy Manning and a Dalek? Oswin and Jo make a funny, flirty, and adorable team, and while I can't say I've shipped Companion/Dalek before, I sure do now ... as will you, I hope.
