The Mysterious Twig by whatthefoucault

Story: The Mysterious Twig
Author: whatthefoucault
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: Turlough discovers an odd bit of a plant hanging from the ceiling of the TARDIS console room. Memories and feelings ensue
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/Vislor Turlough, Tegan Jovanka (mentions Jamie McCrimmon)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I'm fond of this short, fluffy, holiday fic where the Doctor and Turlough talk about why the Doctor hangs mistletoe in the TARDIS.

Rec: Someone to Listen

Story: Someone to Listen
Author: Alienist
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 791
Author's Summary: He does so enjoy assassins.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), Turlough
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: I... really don't like the first person narrative, so for a story to jump out at me like this, written in the first person, it must be something good. Add to that the fact that Turlough isn't a companion I know well and really it's an unlikely pick. But in contrast to the chipperness of the last rec, this is a very emotion-driven piece, and you're on the edge of your seat. I was holding my breath from the very begginning, because it's always nice to hear the more dangerous side of the Fifth Doctor. You find yourself simultaneously before feeling for Turlough and pitying him; you can see his angle, but you also want the Doctor to survive. The conversation flows, and it feels perfectly real, with interruptions, changes in tone, the works. The ending is very touching, too.

Master's Thesis by helluin

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] merryghoul, and I'm back for my second round of recs here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax after a long hiatus. I've got my recs all ready to go for this round, so let's get started, shall we?

Story: Master's Thesis
Author: helluin
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 42,530
Author's Summary: When Nyssa tries to return home with the cure to a deadly plague, the TARDIS overshoots and slips back into her past, the Doctor's future. Worse, the Master is already there, taking a sinister interest in her family. Hemmed in by potential time paradoxes, there's only one person to whom Nyssa can turn for help: her best friend Tegan.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Other Character(s), Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This fic is based on the Big Finish arc where an older Nyssa joins Five, Tegan and Turlough for a spell in the TARDIS, but this can be read without any knowledge of the Big Finish audios. What I love about this fic is that it feels like a Big Finish audio or even an old serial with Five in it. There's action, witty quips and a paradox that needs to be fixed or else. I highly recommend this for Classic Who fans.

Rec: The Body Snatchers (or How the Master finally got inside the Doctor's body)

Posting on behalf of shape-shifter-malcolm-tucker.

Story: The Body Snatchers (or How the Master finally got inside the Doctor's body)
Author: aralias
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5478
Author's Summary: Wacky body swap fic. Featuring some plot, and quite a lot of sex.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The Master (Ainley), Turlough
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: I'm sorry that this is a bit plot-what-plot-ish, but it was too fantastic to pass up. Hilarious, full of ridiculous farce and fanservice for all the Doctor/Master shippers out there. Need I say more?

Two Gingers and an Australian walk into the lingerie department

Story: Two Gingers and an Australian walk into the lingerie department
Author: LunaRowena
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3499
Author's Summary: "Tegan," said the Doctor. "You could have just told me what you wanted to go shopping for. I've lived with a lot of women over the years. I'm not a complete stranger to undergarments." Turlough continued to be fascinated by the ceiling.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, Turlough, Donna Noble, Five, Ten
Warnings: None

Recced because:

When I first read this, I ending up shooting tea out through my nose laughing. The fic was then instantly bookmarked for whenever I recced Calufrax next and I've read it several times whenever I need a good cheer-up. Why do I love this fic? It has some of the best Tegan and Turlough bickering I've ever seen in fic, a mash-up of two great eras, a bit of thought on the practicalities of TARDIS travel, and a really great tip on how to save your under wires from destruction while adventuring across the universe.

Also, it has koalas.

Hidden Corners by vvj5

Story: Hidden Corners
Author: vvj5

rating: general
author's summary:Various odd corners of the TARDIS explored across a linked circle of stories. The Doctor isn't always very tidy and sometimes that means trouble on a transcendental time machine.

Rec: It Shouldn't Happen to a Time Lord by Grace157

Story: It Shouldn't Happen to a Time Lord
Author: Grace157
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 10605
Characters: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), Turlough
Author's Summary: In a case of mistaken identity, the Doctor and Tristan Farnon each end up experiencing a day in the other's life.
Cracky crossover with All Creatures Great & Small.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I like crossovers, and was a fan of the late James Herriot's books and the TV show derived from them. So this crossover, in which the fifth Doctor meets a look-alike vet, works very well for me. It's a bonus that it's by an author who hasn't been recced here before.

‘Where are we going, Doctor?’ Tegan asked, watching the time rotor in the centre of the console rise and fall as the TARDIS dematerialised.

The Doctor activated the dimensional stabilisers to aid their flight. ‘Somewhere quiet and peaceful. I think we could all do with a little holiday, don’t you?’

‘I’m not sure that’s wise,’ said Turlough, watching him begin to set the coordinates, ‘since it seems that every time you try to take us to a place where there aren’t any hostile locals, lethal radiation levels or laws against wearing brightly-coloured socks-’ He paused to give Tegan an unimpressed look as she tried and failed to hide a smirk. ‘-we end up being faced with precisely that.’

The Doctor looked down at the monitor so he wouldn’t have to meet his eyes. ‘Yes, I’m afraid I’d forgotten that fluorescent green is a sacred colour on the planet Mergorax. But let’s not dwell on our mistakes, shall we?’ He realised the little screen was showing Earth, the planet they were now currently orbiting around. That was strange; he didn’t remember setting the coordinates for here. Either he’d become so used to typing the number in that it had become second nature and he’d done it absentmindedly or the TARDIS had decided to bring them here anyway.

Final Thoughts

Well, this week has gone very fast indeed. Already we're at my final rec. I do hope you've enjoyed them all, or at least some of them. I've tried to give you a nice mixture of eras, from right across the history of the show. But there has been, you may have noticed, one notable omission. The Doctor's greatest foes have not made an appearance. Well, until today...

Story: Final Thoughts
Author: The Lonely God
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1082
Author's Summary: After the events of 'Resurrection of the Daleks', one of the Daleks survives the battle in the warehouse. It struggles to comprehend what has happened and begins to fear.
Characters: The Daleks, The Doctor (5th), Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: Doctor Who and the Daleks are bound together. You can't have one without the other. They're like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Posh and Becks. Shrek and Fiona. Sonny and Cher. Robson and Jerome. So it only seems right that, for my final rec, we get a Dalek story. But this isn't a typical one. It gives you a brand new perspective on the universe's angriest pepper pots and shows them to be... Oh, I won't spoil it. Read it and find out for yourself.

Rec: Walking and Sleeping by Awdures

Confession: I think, over time, I've decided that the Fifth Doctor, despite being introduced to the Fourth Doctor first via Who repeats on PBS, is my Doctor.  He dressed very comfortably, treated his companions as equals  and always tried to inspire bravery in all of them except for Kamelion.  Here's a rec from that era with one of Fivey's companions and how Fivey helps to soothe his angst.

Story: Waking and Sleeping
Author: Awdures
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3194
Author's Summary: Turlough's contract with the Black Guardian is at an end, but he's still struggling to shake off the experience.
Characters/Pairings: Turlough
Warnings: Explicit Violence
Recced because: This is an amazing character piece dealing with Turlough after the events of "Enlightenment." Despite being free of the Black Guardian's contract, Turlough still dreams of the Guardian's voice and killing the Doctor. He needs the help of the Doctor to shake off these dreams. Awdures does a good job of detailing Turlough's nightmares and the Guardian's voice. I couldn't stop reading this fic, and I was disappointed when it ended. Highly recommending if you like Turlough or Fivey's era.

Rec: Time Lag

Well, another week of reccing flies by... I hope all of you reading Calufrax have enjoyed the stories I've brought to your attention over the past seven days and smiled indulgently rather than gritting your teeth in annoyance while reading my blather about them :). So, to finish off, another one I think very highly of, and that's me for the time being. Hope we can do this again soon.

Story: Time Lag
Author: castrovalva9
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,480
Author's Summary: In 1979 London, the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough accidentally crash a Torchwood party.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), Tegan Jovanka, Turlough, Torchwood
Warnings: None

Recced because: I don't know if anybody else has seen the recent film version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy yet, but there's a sequence in it in which the great and good (or great...ish at any rate) of the Circus, John Le Carre's fictionalised version of MI6, gather at what looks like the cheesy 70s Xmas office party from hell. And when I saw it, it reminded me strongly of this fic. In a good way! Essentially, that's what happens here - Five and companions inadvertently crash the Torchwood Institute's 100th anniversary bash and hilarity ensues, with dancing, team-building pep talks and flagrant misuse of alien technology all featuring in the course of the evening. I really like the way this story portrays Five, Tegan and Turlough, a Doctor-companion team that always make me smile with their various personality quirks and often spiky interpersonal relations. The character voices and interactions are spot on. As for Torchwood, they don't exactly cover themselves in glory - you know that it probably really was like this for them most of the time. It is all in all extremely funny, and yet also very true to the characters and what we know of this particular corner of the Whoniverse. So, I encourage you to read this and hope you all enjoy it - please leave reviews for the author if at all possible.

Home Field Advantage

Title: Home Field Advantage
Author: eve11
Rating: All Audiences
Word count: 2,499
Author's summary: "I could beat you in any race on Grket. It's a simple fact." Entry for the 2010 Short Trips on audio writing contest."
Characters: Doctor 5, Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: I would crawl five miles over broken glass to stand in 5's garbage. That being said, this is a story about Turlough. Turlough, the surly malcontent, is having the unexpected time of his life using his high-gravity muscles on a low-gravity planet. Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...some guy from Trion. The Doctor, even stronger than Turlough, is having less fun as he destructs his way across the land trying to help the inhabitants with not getting killed to death by an unnatural disaster.

God what a imaginative, well-written, beautifully characterized and funny story. Eve11's original aliens are a treat and their world is well-populated with fascinating critters. Best of all the low-grav aspect of it makes me want to go there and play, play, play. Great stuff. And I found myself truly liking Turlough which just proves what a good story this is, really.

The rootwood facade also served as a railing for a wedge-shaped veranda cut into the top floor, and it was onto this balcony that the Doctor found himself politely escorted.

"Please wait here for the completion of the scan," Technician Strrek said, peeling his hand from the Doctor's sleeve as he ushered him out of the laboratory.

"Yes, I'm terribly sorry-" the Doctor said, looking past Strrek's reedy, towering frame toward the monitors inside.

"As am I," Strrek interrupted, "for that is the second display console you have broken today."

Hi! I'm your reccer for this week. Sorry I was busy yesterday. I'll try to get some newer stuff out, so it may be mostly eleven fic.

Saying that her is a five/ten fic for you, that's quite old but really good.

Title: A Hull of a Time
Author: Bad_Dickens
Rating: All ages
Word count: 1290
Author's summary: The Fifth Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough in Hull in the 1920s. Wonder who they'll meet?
Characters/Pairings: Tegan Jovanka, The Doctor (5th), The TARDIS, Turlough, Kathy NightingaleWarnings: None

Recced because: The unfinished story of Blink is Kathy's marriage, and her simultaneously uplifting and depressing fate is explored in this fic. Added to this is a nice character student of the fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough. A lovely, bitter sweet snapshot.. And the ending is fantastic.

Rec: Time, Considered as a Helix

Hello! I post as allonym at the Teaspoon and I'm your reccer this week. I'll be recommending a variety of stories, mostly new Who and Torchwood. I tried to develop a theme, and what I came up with is "stories I liked that I think everyone should read."

Story:Time, Considered as a Helix
Author: blackwingsblackheart
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 10,657
Author's Summary: The Doctor is having inappropriate thoughts (set after the events of "The Five Doctors")
Characters/Pairings: Three/Turlough, Five/Turlough
Warnings: Explicit sex, hints of possible past abuse

Recced because: I'm a sucker for a multi-Doctor story, and this is one of the best ones I've read that deals with the personal timeline issues the Doctor goes through after meeting himself. The story, set right after the events of The Five Doctors is accessible even to those who don't normal read old Who. Three and Five are the POV characters and their similarities and differences are wonderfully characterized, and the glimpses we get of the other Doctors is spot-on. Turlough's complexities are nicely captured, plus there's some wonderful smut.

rec: a list of the lost, by aralias

Story: A List of the Lost
Author: aralias
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3889
Author's Summary: Five times the fifth Doctor was alone with one of his companions, each time after losing someone else.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan, Turlough, Peri
Warnings: References to character death

Recced because: The Fifth Doctor traveled with a lot of companions, and he traveled with a lot of companions who also traveled with each other. But no one travels with the Doctor forever. In a series of vignettes, this fic explores each companion's reaction to the loss of someone, and in so doing, explores how each companion sees his or her own relationship to the Doctor. Taken individually, the vignettes are a wonderful series of character studies; added together, they are a study on the Doctor himself, and an insightful look into the Doctor/companion relationship.

Rec: Time To Get Away by Netgirl_y2k

Story: Time to Get Away
Author: netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2435
Author's summary: In which there are flesh eating plants, drunken one night stands and Donna discovers that there are more mad time travellers calling themselves the Doctor than she's really comfortable with.
Characters: Donna Noble, Five, Tegan, Turlough. (Donna/Tegan but anything explicit goes on off-camera, as it were)
Warnings: none given

Recced because: Written way back in July of 2007 for the [livejournal.com profile] dw_femslash ficathon on lj. I can't even remember if we knew Donna was going to be the next companion by then; it was only 2 weeks or so after Last of the Time Lords aired. All we'd seen of Donna was the Runaway Bride, but thankfully, that was plenty of material to go on for those of us who already loved her :) [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k hits the ground running with this story and it just. gets. funnier. Seriously, I had a hard time picking an excerpt because I wanted to quote the whole thing. Its tone reads like crack-fic but the fact of the matter is, it's actually scarily plausible. Even if you don't usually go for femslash, read this story, especially if you need a laugh (it's totally worth it just for the description of the TARDIS noise at the end). And the ending itself is great fun and just the slightest bit prescient for series four.

Rec - The Brigadier's Wedding by Aralias

Story: The Brigadier's Wedding
Author: Aralias
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 5166
Author's Summary: For a man profoundly against public displays of emotion, the Brigadier had certainly had a lot of weddings. The Doctor is invited to Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart's third wedding, but accidentally goes to all of them.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Clyde Langer, Jack Harkness, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), Turlough
Warnings: None
Recced because: A good strong plot is always nice, but character is just as important. This story is a lovely example of character-driven comedy, with the Doctor attempting - not always successfully - to get his head around human marriage customs and be the perfect wedding guest.

I'm reccing a bit early to a) make up for reccing so late last night and b)because there's a chance of thunderstorms moving through later.

Now that I've started out with a New!Who rec, let's take a step into Classic!Who and the Fifth Doctor's era.

Story:  Best Enemies
Author: kittenmommy

Rating:  all ages/PG
Word Count: 10037/One shot
Author's Summary:  With the Doctor critically injured and unable to regenerate, Tegan and Turlough join with the Master in a desperate bid to save the Doctor's life.

Characters/Pairings: Tegan, Turlough, The Master(Ainley), 5th Doctor, 4th Doctor
Warnings:  Angst,
Recced because:  I've seen very little of the Fifth Doctor's era beyond what I've seen on YouTube and Time Crash.  However kittenmommy's story makes me feel like I have, crafting a story that shows the characters of that era without making me feel like I have to YouTube them to find out more about them before reading.  I also find the relationship that evolves between Tegan and the Master intriguing as well as the brief conversation between the Doctor and the Master.

the ten doctors, by jjpor

Story:  The Ten Doctors
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 25,568
Author’s Summary: It was history’s greatest and most famous party.
Characters/Pairings: The first ten Doctors and Romana plus a wide assortment of companions, a couple of classic Masters and the Brigadier, toss well.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I nearly passed it over this time merely because JJPOR is a very popular author who had another well-deserved recommendation just last week (don’t miss that one either!), but decided we’d just let this be his month for a bounty of riches, goodness knows he’s given all of us enough reading enjoyment to deserve it.

This piece was written as a tribute for the 45th anniversary of the show and it quite appropriately is the sort of multi-Doctor fic that brings the reader back again and again for another round.  I expect nearly every writer has to give the “what would happen if all of the Doctors were together at once” scenario a try, but some are definitely better than others; this is one of the good ones and you won’t regret it for a moment.

In essence, Ten has decided that a doomed planet famous for having partied hard right up until the moment their sun went supernova would be the perfect setting for a gathering of his selves and as the guests arrive each and every one is so perfectly portrayed it is a complete delight.  Poor Susan making the best of a doting crowd of Grandfathers, Romana’s opinions regarding the appetizers and Six’s opinions regarding her plus the consequences of expressing those thoughts aloud are only a sprinkle of the stellar moments here, a fabulous panorama lightly sauced with punch.  As no doubt suspected, there are humorous moments but also a few snatches of adventurousness and even some serious and empathetic twists for the heart.

For the uninitiated to his works, JJPOR is a find indeed; a top-notch competent, imaginative and high quality writer whose stories never disappoint.  I highly recommend without reservation not only this particular bit of mildly cracky fancy, but any of his stories across the spectrum.  Enjoy the ride.

REC: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had The Occasion To Regret The Doctor's Exile...

Story: Five Times Lord Braxiatel Had Occasion to Regret The Doctor’s Exile Very Deeply Indeed (And One Time He Wished The Doctor Would Just Sod Off Forever)
Author: x_los
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8119
Author's summary: The Doctor is many things to many people, but to Irving Braxiatel he is the universe's most annoying little brother.
Characters/Pairings: Braxiatel, Susan, Delgado!Master, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, Ainley!Master, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn, Peri, Romana II, Leela, Eighth Doctor, Narvin
Warnings: spoilers for the Gallifrey audios in the final part

Recced because: It sucks to be the Doctor's older brother. It really, really sucks. And nobody knows that better than “Irving” Braxiatel. Luckily, nobody suffers quite as beautifully as Brax does, either, which is a good thing as this fic is pretty much as it says on a tin: an exercise in showing all the many ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. No, wait, let me rephrase that: all the many hilarious ways that the Doctor has ruined Braxiatel's life. Because this fic is one of the funniest I've read in a long while. And, oddly enough, it's one of the better character studies too.

The sound of a dematerialization made them all look towards the TARDIS–but she was showing no signs of immanent departure. Indeed her sturdy blue frame seemed to silently rebuke them for doubting her reliability. In the direction they’d all just turned from, someone coughed. In unison three heads swiveled back to the plant. A man in a human business suit hovered above the manzanita.

“You stop right there, Master, that plant is endangered!” Peri yelled, standing as if she planned to fight him off the bush.

“Peri,” the Doctor sighed, “not everyone who’s made unwise facial hair decisions and wants a chat with me is the Master. Sometimes it’s only Shakespeare, or, in this case, Irving Braxiatel.”

Second Chances

I don't know what you mean, it is certainly still Saturday.

Story: Second Chances
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2182
Author's Summary: The Master's latest overcomplicated scheme backfires, giving the Fifth Doctor a unique opportunity.
Characters/Pairings: The Fifth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), Tegan Jovanka, Turlough
Warnings: None

Recced because: I may be a tad biased, as I asked for this story, but it's done so perfectly. The Fifth Doctor is able to confront the man the Master was, and it's as complicated, bittersweet, painful and wistful as you'd imagine. His plan to keep the Master this way is doomed, of course, and everyone knows it.

Tegan and Turlough, though they play supporting roles, are also characterised very well.
