Story: The New Year Honours List
Author: catelfemma
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,070
Author's Summary: At the honours ceremony, things aren't quite as they seem.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings:. none

Recced because: One of the reasons I love fanfic is that it takes the little throwaway pieces of information and turns them into pure gold. We know from The Poison Sky that the Brigadier had been knighted – this fic tells the story of his knighting ceremony, and demonstrates why the Brig is, and will always be, amazingly awesome.

And that’s my last rec for the week – I had a great time. Hope you found something to enjoy.

Story: The Problem With Boxing Day
Author: elisi
Rating:all ages
Word Count: 8,239
Author's Summary: Alexander Saxon (six years old) hated Boxing Day almost as much as he loved Christmas. How does Alex cope with his human family? And how does the Doctor deal with raising the child of his archnemesis?
Characters/Pairings: Lucy Saxon, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings:. none

Recced because: A little something to get in the holiday spirit. This is one of a series of stories in a AU where the Master and Lucy had a son during The Year That Never Was. In this story, Alexander is forced to deal with his extended (human) family on Boxing Day. It does a good job of showing a child’s viewpoint, and is a microcosm of the central tension in this series – how Alex reconciles the fact he loves both his father the Master, and the Doctor, who is helping raise him, and how needs to find his own path between the two of them.

Story: The Places We’ve Been
Author: nostalgia
Word Count: 4,067
Author's Summary: In which Eleven and Romana have an exciting adventure.
Rating:all ages
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), Romana, River
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I adore it when when an author can successfully blend old and new Who, and this story does a lovely job of it. At first the story seems to skip lightly over the fallout from the Time War, but a careful read pulls a host of subtleties into Eleven and Romana’s interactions. But this fic turns truly wonderful when River is thrown into the mix.

Story: Guess Who’s Coming to Tea
Author: jinxed wood
Word Count: 1,016
Author's Summary: [Discworld Crossover] Havelock Vetinari doesn't know quite what to make of Leonard's bosom friend.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th)
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I’m a sucker for a well-crafted crossover, and this one is a gem. The Patrician is perfectly characterized, and his interaction with the Doctor is wonderfully subtle. A must-read for Discworld fans everywhere.

rec: Loop

Dec. 14th, 2011 12:00 am
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Loop
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 24,705
Author's Summary: "He was the champion – no the lord – of foolhardy plans, whipped together at the last second with barely a prayer of working. But this…this took the cake. It was all up to Jack now." Ten, Rose, and Jack in a spot of trouble, several times over.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th)/Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness
Warnings:. none

Recced because: This story has everything – action, mystery, romance – all wrapped up in a Mobius strip of timey-wimey goodness. Sanguine Ink does such a fantastic job of capturing the frustration of getting stuck in a time loop, while still keeping the reader engaged and the plot moving. Everyone gets a chance to shine, and there is a special guest appearance in chapter three that’s totally worth the price of admission.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Lead and Follow
Author: Memory Dragon
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 11,223
Author's Summary: When the Doctor doesn't come to a moon the Master had taken over to stop him, the Master has to come up with a plot to get back the Doctor's attention: Learning how to dance West Coast Swing!
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)/OC, The Master (Delgado)/ The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (8th),
Warnings:. none

Recced because: My favorite part about reccing is having the chance to highlight a great story that folks might otherwise pass up. On the face of it, this story should be labeled “crack,” but given some of the Master’s absurd plots in canon, is learning West Coast Swing really that far-fetched? . Lizzie, the story’s original character, is well-crafted and interesting, and the plot is engaging. Best of all is the characterization of Delgado!Master, who manages to be sympathetic, charming and evil (if not completely so) all at the same time.

Greetings! I post as Allonym on the Teaspoon and I will be your reccer this week. As usual, I’ve tried to find a variety of recs - hope you find something you like.

Story: Practical Mythology
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 14,263
Author's Summary: Jack Harkness is a conman and a survivor. He doesn't believe in legends. And he shouldn't be running towards the invisible menace—but he is.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (9th)
Warnings:. Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: There are a lot of great “Jack finds his place on the TARDIS” stories, but this one is my favorite. Lyricwritesprose does a wonderful job with the little details that bring a story to life and give it depth. The Doctor especially is well characterized, his many facets revealed as Jack puzzles out his traveling companions.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Well, it’s the end of my rec week – I’ve had a great time picking out a variety of different stories. Hope you found something you liked! For my last rec, let’s head off to the Hundred Acre Wood. TTFN!

Story: Bouncing
Author: KerrAvonsen
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 200
Author's Summary: Tigger meets someone. (crossover with Winnie The Pooh, obviously)
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings:. none

Recced because: It’s short and sweet and sure to make you smile.

rec: Boots

[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Boots
Author: JaneTurenne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1976
Author's Summary: In the earliest days of The Year That Never Was, Jo Grant pays a visit to the Valiant.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, The Master (Simm)
Warnings:. none

Recced because: This is a wonderful little character piece linking old and new Who. It’s a simple conversation on the Valiant where Jo manages to turn the Master inside out, at least for a moment. She’s one of my favorite companions, and this fic does a great job of capturing her straightforward approach to situations.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Something Borrowed
Author: ProfessorSpork
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1,807
Author's Summary: After sacrificing himself, the Doctor ends up in the least expected of places. A The Big Bang interlude
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Rose Tyler, Duplicate Tenth Doctor
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I love when a fic can bridge between the Eleventh Doctor and his tenth self, and this one does it perfectly. It weaves so seamlessly into The Big Bang storyline that it’s now in my personal canon. Eleven’s voice is spot on and the whole story leaves you with a bittersweet smile.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: C2H5OH (The Forever's Too Good To Be True Remix)
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1565
Author's Summary: The Doctor's always been a liar, now he's a drunk liar.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler
Warnings:. none

Recced because: It can be hard to simultaneous capture the alieness of the Doctor and still stay true to the Doctor we see on screen, but this story does a great job of it. It gives just a glimpse of the darkness underneath the Doctor’s goofy exterior, and it’s enough to give you a shiver.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Cookies and Tea
Author: Topaz Eyes
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1226
Author's Summary: The important things get passed on--though perhaps not in the way we think
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I adore Donna, and this fic does a wonderful job of capturing her and how she might’ve worked through some of her losses in the Library. Plus I just love the fact it includes a recipe!
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: The Darkness is Coming
Author: Diciple of Time
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 104,774
Author's Summary: The new drums are more dangerous than the Master knows, and he and the Doctor will have to face a part of their past they forgot. S4 Rewrite, Master/Doctor, two chapter crossover with Firefly
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simms!Master, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Jenny
Warnings:. Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: One of the pleasures of reccing is that you get a chance to highlight stories that otherwise might be missed or passed over. Today’s rec takes a little patience to appreciate, but I think it’s worth the effort, particularly if you’re a Doctor/Master fan. It’s an AU story where the Master, mysteriously resurrected after LotTL, shows up on the planet of the Ood to help the Doctor and Donna. The drums have changed, and the Master has decided to take the Doctor up on his offer to travel in the TARDIS with him. It takes a couple of page views before the action starts, and things don’t really take off until Chapter 2, but once they do, it’s a wild and wonderful ride. For those skeptical about a reformed!Master, don’t worry. He’s still the Master – things aren’t automatically “sunshine and daisies.” There is a logical explanation for everything (well, logical by Whovian standards) and the author does a great job of wrapping it all up by the end. The character interactions are great – I loved the Master and Donna snarking at each other, and watching the Master deal with Sylvia Noble is a treat. As a bonus, there is a great Firefly crossover in the middle chapters.

Story: P.S. Happy Christmas
Author: A Moment In Subtext
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 982
Author's Summary: Schrodinger had a cat; Martha has and/or might have a pie. She's pretty sure the same principle applies
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Warnings:. none

Recced because: March 14 (3.14) is Pi Day, and what better way to celebrate than a timey-wimey slightly cracky story that may or may not be full of sugary goodness.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Well, it’s my last rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories to recommend. Now, for those who love the sugary goodness of a well crafted crack!fic, I’ll leave you with a song.

Story: Doctor Who, Broadway Style! Les Miserables
Author: azriona
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3476
Author's Summary: The Master is plotting the enslavement of the Earth, and the Doctor is in a wheelchair. Whoever will be able to stop him? Martha Jones, that’s who! Featuring a lovely duet between Rose Tyler (yes, Rose Tyler) and the Doctor. It’s not just Crack!Fic, it's Musical Crack!Fic!
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, The Master (Simms), Francine Jones, Clive Jones, Tish Jones, Lucy Saxon, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Tom Milligan, Jack Harkness,
Warnings:. none

Recced because: The utter brilliance of this musical crack!fic is right there in the title. Les Miz fans, be prepared to start humming "At the End of the Day."
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Skewed Perspective
Author: sahiya
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1841
Author's Summary: "Doctor. Do you think that it's possible - just possible - that your semi-immortality may have given you a skewed perspective on the subject?"
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan
Warnings:. none

Recced because: In this quiet crossover with Lois Bujold’s Vorkosiverse, a newly widowed Cordelia is traveling with the Doctor. This story captures the emotional heart of both characters perfectly, and Cordelia’s Betan level-headedness is just the thing to balance Ten’s angst. Even if you’re not familiar with Bujold’s works, this is worth a try. But be warned, there’s a good chance Cordelia will intrigue you enough to explore her story further!
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Filthy Lucre
Author: Calapine
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1063
Author's Summary: Where the Doctor got his paper bag of cash from in The Lodger.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings:. none

Recced because: This charming missing scene fic does a great job of integrating old and new Who. Both the Brigadier and Eleven’s voices are spot on, and the overall tone fits well with the episode it’s associated with. I could easily picture it as a wonderful “Children in Need” special.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Flying, Not Falling
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1650
Author's Summary: Death, life, and what comes after, "You’re not falling, Astrid, you’re flying”
Characters/Pairings: Astrid Peth
Warnings:. none

Recced because: This is a beautifully written piece that explores what happened to Astrid after the Voyage of the Damned. Small details of Astrid’s past help fill in her background nicely, and the author interweaves the story seamlessly with the text of Edgar Allen Poe’s El Dorado, creating a dreamlike golden journey.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Little White Lie of Omission
Author: A Moment in Subtext
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1360
Author's Summary: Martha Jones has a secret from The Year That Never Was. No one has ever asked, and she's never seen any reason to bring it up.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Jack Harkness
Warnings:. none

Recced because: I love it when a fic can help fill in missing pieces of the puzzle, and this story is the best explanation I’ve read about how Martha’s journey during The Year That Never Was really worked. Plus it features a very cool timey-wimey Torchwood tie-in.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Time and Motion
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6383
Author's Summary: "In a week or two, he'd have forgotten the quick grope in the alley, but he knew he'd remember the conversation with the kid for a long time." Set in the middle of the 20th century.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/OC
Warnings:. Explicit Sex

Recced because: Even if you ordinarily avoid like the plague any fic with original characters, this one is worth a try. Amelia (who was named well before Eleven’s companion) is an extremely well-developed character, and watching her story unfold also gives us an interesting perspective on Jack’s life. Plus watching how Jack moves through the mid-twentieth century is a treat.

Hello! I post as allonym on the Teaspoon and I'm your reccer this week. I'm planning a mix of different types of stories; hopefully there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Story: Any Time At All
Author: Roach Patrol
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4327
Author's Summary: AU from The Enemy Within. With the aid of a sack of jelly babies, the Master successfully captures the amnesiac Doctor and his TARDIS. Only, he hadn't really planned out what to do next.
Characters/Pairings: Eight/Master(Roberts)
Warnings:. Swearing

Recced because: This fic is a wonderfully hilarious take on the eternal struggle between the Master and the Doctor. I’d call it crack!fic except there is something very plausible about the Master’s internal battle over the choice between punishing and coddling the amnesiac Doctor. Eight is the perfect Doctor for this fic, with his winsome good looks, and the Master distaste for the Americanisms that his stolen body keeps coming up with is very funny.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: And Then The TARDIS Fell Into Pete’s World
Author: elisi
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 14042
Author's Summary: The TARDIS falls into Pete’s World. Stuff happens.
Characters/Pairings: Amy/Rory, 10.5/Rose, Eleven, River, the Tyler family
Warnings: none

Recced because:
As full of bubbly goodness as any fine crack!fic, this story also doubles as an excellent character study and exercise in closure. The plot, as described in the title, is basically an excuse to throw together characters unlikely to ever meet in canon, stir them up and see what happens. The result is hilariously satisfying.

And that is my final rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories and hopefully was able to provide something for everyone to enjoy.

Story: Don’t Think You Knew you Were In this Song
Author: azn_jack_fiend
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5769
Author's Summary: Mickey and Jack meet again after the events of Children of Earth. Mickey considers how his life has changed since their first meeting, how far he's traveled since then, and wonders what he'll say to Jack. In between, he remembers a long, strange dinner party with the Jones family.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Martha, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones’ family
Warnings:. none

Recced because: Mickey is a hard character to get a sense of as a whole person, but this story captures him brilliantly. It shows how and why Mickey matured during the series, and how he’s also still the same man. After reading this, the romance between Martha and Mickey makes perfect sense to me. The story also captures the lingering effects of the Year on the Jones’ family – how far they’ve come, and how they are still damaged. It’s also interesting seeing Jack through Mickey’s eyes. Mickey is the one person on Earth who knew Jack before he was mortal, and it gives him a unique perspective on the Captain.

Story: Intersecting Geodesics
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 36704
Author's Summary: Stuck in the wrong time with a Jack who hasn't met him yet, all Ianto really wants is a way home.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Jack/John Hart
Warnings:. Various shades of dub-con, non-descriptive mentions of sex trafficking, character death.

Recced because: This story is an absolute must-read for anyone who loves Ianto Jones, but even those who’ve never watched Torchwood can enjoy this well-written story of a man who finds himself stranded outside his own time, searching for a way to get back home. Nancy Brown does a great job of staying within canon while telling Ianto’s story after Children Of Earth. The portrayal of the Time Agency and its Agents seems chillingly plausible, and Ianto’s resourcefulness and courage are convincingly rendered.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Controller
Author: HonorH
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1572
Author's Summary: Her name is Lily. She had a mother. When she was five, the Daleks took both from her.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, the Controller
Warnings:. none

Recced because: The Controller is such an important catalyst in the episode Bad Wolf, but we know very little about her, and how she came to defy the Daleks. This fic creates a heartbreakingly beautiful view of the person behind the Controller.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Second Opinion
Author: DameRuth
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8732
Author's Summary: Jack is showing signs of stress, and won't take any help from his team; Ianto decides it's time to enlist the help of a certain Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Ianto/Jack, Ten/Jack, team Torchwood
Warnings:. none

Recced because: This story is my favorite in DameRuth’s wonderful Flowers universe because of fascinating interactions between Ianto and the tenth Doctor. Even if you don’t ordinarily read Torchwood stories, this one is worth a try. Ianto’s point of view reveals how utterly alien the Doctor can be, while at the same time still being entirely the Doctor.

Story:Twelve Years and Four Psychiatrists
Author: Sanguine Ink
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3906
Author's Summary: Why Amy needed four psychiatrists. Cameos from Doctors 1-10.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Doctors 1-11 plus companions
Warnings:. None

Recced because: This is the best explanation I’ve read so far for Amy’s personality and how the twelve years of waiting affected her. The story is extremely funny, and could almost be considered crack!fic, except that the Doctors are all perfectly in character, and their encounters with Amy seem wonderfully plausible.
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Hello! I post as allonym at the Teaspoon and I'm your reccer this week. I'll be recommending a variety of stories, mostly new Who and Torchwood. I tried to develop a theme, and what I came up with is "stories I liked that I think everyone should read."

Story:Time, Considered as a Helix
Author: blackwingsblackheart
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 10,657
Author's Summary: The Doctor is having inappropriate thoughts (set after the events of "The Five Doctors")
Characters/Pairings: Three/Turlough, Five/Turlough
Warnings: Explicit sex, hints of possible past abuse

Recced because: I'm a sucker for a multi-Doctor story, and this is one of the best ones I've read that deals with the personal timeline issues the Doctor goes through after meeting himself. The story, set right after the events of The Five Doctors is accessible even to those who don't normal read old Who. Three and Five are the POV characters and their similarities and differences are wonderfully characterized, and the glimpses we get of the other Doctors is spot-on. Turlough's complexities are nicely captured, plus there's some wonderful smut.
