Recced because: One of the reasons I love fanfic is that it takes the little throwaway pieces of information and turns them into pure gold. We know from The Poison Sky that the Brigadier had been knighted – this fic tells the story of his knighting ceremony, and demonstrates why the Brig is, and will always be, amazingly awesome.

Recced because: I adore it when when an author can successfully blend old and new Who, and this story does a lovely job of it. At first the story seems to skip lightly over the fallout from the Time War, but a careful read pulls a host of subtleties into Eleven and Romana’s interactions. But this fic turns truly wonderful when River is thrown into the mix.

Recced because: This story has everything – action, mystery, romance – all wrapped up in a Mobius strip of timey-wimey goodness. Sanguine Ink does such a fantastic job of capturing the frustration of getting stuck in a time loop, while still keeping the reader engaged and the plot moving. Everyone gets a chance to shine, and there is a special guest appearance in chapter three that’s totally worth the price of admission.

Lyricwritesprose does a wonderful job with the little details that bring a story to life and give it depth. The Doctor especially is well characterized, his many facets revealed as Jack puzzles out his traveling companions.

Recced because: This is a wonderful little character piece linking old and new Who. It’s a simple conversation on the Valiant where Jo manages to turn the Master inside out, at least for a moment. She’s one of my favorite companions, and this fic does a great job of capturing her straightforward approach to situations.

Recced because: It can be hard to simultaneous capture the alieness of the Doctor and still stay true to the Doctor we see on screen, but this story does a great job of it. It gives just a glimpse of the darkness underneath the Doctor’s goofy exterior, and it’s enough to give you a shiver.

Recced because: One of the pleasures of reccing is that you get a chance to highlight stories that otherwise might be missed or passed over. Today’s rec takes a little patience to appreciate, but I think it’s worth the effort, particularly if you’re a Doctor/Master fan. It’s an AU story where the Master, mysteriously resurrected after LotTL, shows up on the planet of the Ood to help the Doctor and Donna. The drums have changed, and the Master has decided to take the Doctor up on his offer to travel in the TARDIS with him. It takes a couple of page views before the action starts, and things don’t really take off until Chapter 2, but once they do, it’s a wild and wonderful ride. For those skeptical about a reformed!Master, don’t worry. He’s still the Master – things aren’t automatically “sunshine and daisies.” There is a logical explanation for everything (well, logical by Whovian standards) and the author does a great job of wrapping it all up by the end. The character interactions are great – I loved the Master and Donna snarking at each other, and watching the Master deal with Sylvia Noble is a treat. As a bonus, there is a great Firefly crossover in the middle chapters.

Well, it’s my last rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories to recommend. Now, for those who love the sugary goodness of a well crafted crack!fic, I’ll leave you with a song.

Recced because: This charming missing scene fic does a great job of integrating old and new Who. Both the Brigadier and Eleven’s voices are spot on, and the overall tone fits well with the episode it’s associated with. I could easily picture it as a wonderful “Children in Need” special.

Recced because: I love it when a fic can help fill in missing pieces of the puzzle, and this story is the best explanation I’ve read about how Martha’s journey during The Year That Never Was really worked. Plus it features a very cool timey-wimey Torchwood tie-in.

Recced because: This fic is a wonderfully hilarious take on the eternal struggle between the Master and the Doctor. I’d call it crack!fic except there is something very plausible about the Master’s internal battle over the choice between punishing and coddling the amnesiac Doctor. Eight is the perfect Doctor for this fic, with his winsome good looks, and the Master distaste for the Americanisms that his stolen body keeps coming up with is very funny.

Story: Don’t Think You Knew you Were In this Song

Recced because: Mickey is a hard character to get a sense of as a whole person, but this story captures him brilliantly. It shows how and why Mickey matured during the series, and how he’s also still the same man. After reading this, the romance between Martha and Mickey makes perfect sense to me. The story also captures the lingering effects of the Year on the Jones’ family – how far they’ve come, and how they are still damaged. It’s also interesting seeing Jack through Mickey’s eyes. Mickey is the one person on Earth who knew Jack before he was mortal, and it gives him a unique perspective on the Captain.

Recced because: The Controller is such an important catalyst in the episode Bad Wolf, but we know very little about her, and how she came to defy the Daleks. This fic creates a heartbreakingly beautiful view of the person behind the Controller.

Recced because: This is the best explanation I’ve read so far for Amy’s personality and how the twelve years of waiting affected her. The story is extremely funny, and could almost be considered crack!fic, except that the Doctors are all perfectly in character, and their encounters with Amy seem wonderfully plausible.
