Rec: Time, Considered as a Helix

Hello! I post as allonym at the Teaspoon and I'm your reccer this week. I'll be recommending a variety of stories, mostly new Who and Torchwood. I tried to develop a theme, and what I came up with is "stories I liked that I think everyone should read."

Story:Time, Considered as a Helix
Author: blackwingsblackheart
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 10,657
Author's Summary: The Doctor is having inappropriate thoughts (set after the events of "The Five Doctors")
Characters/Pairings: Three/Turlough, Five/Turlough
Warnings: Explicit sex, hints of possible past abuse

Recced because: I'm a sucker for a multi-Doctor story, and this is one of the best ones I've read that deals with the personal timeline issues the Doctor goes through after meeting himself. The story, set right after the events of The Five Doctors is accessible even to those who don't normal read old Who. Three and Five are the POV characters and their similarities and differences are wonderfully characterized, and the glimpses we get of the other Doctors is spot-on. Turlough's complexities are nicely captured, plus there's some wonderful smut.

rec: Incubus by saywheeeee

Story: Incubus
Author: saywheeeee
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5092
Author's Summary: Something terrible is trapped in the TARDIS with Amy, and the Doctor is powerless to stop it. Warnings: adult themes, very dark.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven, Amy
Warnings: Non-con, explicit violence
Recced because: This is a gripping story that gets the voices just right.  You can't go wrong with saywheeeee, and here she proves that she is just as good at dark intensity as she is at gorgeous prose and romance.  Plotty and well-crafted, this story is impressively thought-out.  There's a lot for h/c lovers to like, as well.  I won't give any spoilers, but I will say that the ending couldn't be any more perfect than it is.

Rec: Seven Days in a Year That Never Was

Hello Whoniverse!   I'm LibraryLover82 (Library_Lover on Teaspoon), and I'll be reccing again this week.   I tried to mix up the story length a bit, but most of them are quick reads, because that's usually what I have time to read.   There will be a healthy dose of New Who, a strong flavor of Classic Who, a dollop of Sarah Jane Adventures and just a tiny pinch of Torchwood, so I hope you find something you like.   I have also tried to rec mostly authors who have never been recced here before, because I think it's easy to fall into a habit of only reading familiar authors and you can miss some good things when you do that.   As always, please tip the authors with a comment!

Story: Seven Days in a Year that Never Was

Author: Ebbyzone

Rating: All Ages – One story rated Adult

Word Count: 14,932

Author's Summary: Seven days in the life of Martha Jones during the year she walked the Earth for the Doctor.

Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, others

Warnings: None

Recced because:

I'm starting with the longest one.  It’s somewhat unusual to rec a series, but these stories could easily just have been chapters in one story, so I decided to go for it.   I really like how Ebbyzone describes some of the moments Martha had during the YTNW when she wasn’t actively running for her life.   Martha’s memories of happier times with her family are what I imagine she would have thought about a lot during her travels, both because she was worried about them, and because it gives her strength to remember what normal feels like.   There are mild spoilers for the novel “The Story of Martha” in this, but to be honest that book disappointed me a little.   These stories didn’t.

The Time of Your Life

Greetings to all those who understand LJ far better than do I. I'm Merrythemad and I'll be reccing for you lot this week. It'll be an odd assortment of nuWho and classic with, perhaps, a bit of Torchwood thrown in good measure. I'm no good at LJ so please bear with me.

Story:The Time of Your Life
Author: Nostalgia
Rating:Adult
Word Count:1477
Author's Summary:In which loving someone in chronological order is for losers. (Eleven/River)
Characters/Pairings:11th Doctor/River Song
Warnings: explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: Most of us assume that, at some point, the Doctor's mind changes in regard to River Song, this story delves into that mental switch and does so with a delicate touch that's as amusing as it is refined. The characterisations are spot-on and Nostalgia (the author) has The Doctor's mentality down to a "T". Also, please not, that though the warnings say explicit sex is involved it's nothing more than you might see on late-night Primetime network television.

Sleep

Story: Sleep
Author: Sigyn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,844
Author's Summary:
Owen is forced to drag a sodden and semi-conscious Toshiko home. What do you do with a beautiful, willing and emotionally vulnerable woman when you are already dead? Takes place after an unspecified horrific event, just before the events in Fragments and Exit Wounds.
Characters/Pairings: Owen, Tosh
Warnings: 2,660

Recced because:  What could be more seasonally appropriate that zombies? Zombies, and the ladies who love them? This is short, sad, sweet, and very plausible. I've always had a soft spot for Tosh and Owen's doomed romance, and this fic really cuts to the heart of the pairing and offers a quiet moment of grace.

The Bridge

Hello everyone! Since I get to rec from now until All Hallow's, I've decided to honor the spirit of the season-- mua ha ha-- and go with dark, scary, creepy, and/or strange fics. Hopefully a bit of each!

So I hope you enjoy... Tales from the Teaspoon Crypt.

Story: The Bridge
Author: Scythe The Wicked
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,844
Author's Summary: In a small town in modern day Mississippi, a local teenager recalls the horrid story of a lynching in the Depression Era South and the terrible miracle and tragedy that followed.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha Jones.
Warnings: Explicit violence and death.

Recced because: this is a completely brutal fic, and it reads like a blow to the gut. It' short, it's stark, it's superbly written, and it pulls no punches: not about death, not about bigotry, not about the very real dangers of the life that the Doctor leads his companions into, and certainly not about the darkness in humanity's-- and the Doctor's-- hearts. At the same time there's a distinctly phoenix-like taste of hope tucked into the timey-wimey ending, and, thus, the entire fic, which redeems what might have been a distasteful piece of snuff fic into a wonderfully haunting morality play. Not for the faint of heart, or stomach, but totally worth it.

Rec: "Target of Opportunity"

Story: Target of Opportunity
Author: DameRuth
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3009
Author's Summary: Jack/Master from the Year That Never Was -- "Flowers!verse" style. A sequel of sorts to "Hothouse Flowers" (even though this story takes place before that one by internal chronology), both of which build on events/concepts from "Like Flowers". The Master forgets it's a bad idea to engage an enemy on familiar ground, and Jack proves that he's nobody's victim.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Master
Warnings: Adult, Explicit Sex

Recced because: This prequel to Hothouse Flowers is often overlooked. It doesn't have the Doctor in it, except in flashback, and a lot of people avoid Jack/Master, the Year That Never Was, or both. But this is one of my favorite little gems in DameRuth's Flowers!verse. Yes, there are dark and creepy elements here, but ultimately, it's a story about Jack's seizing a moment of victory in the midst of a war where he's only meant to be fighting a holding action . . . and how, when you really understand people, you can find weapons in the most unusual places.

Rec: "Relict"

Story: Relict
Author: Ninamusing
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 57,387+
Author's Summary: The TARDIS team dances around their new relationship. As they draw closer, the connection creates unexpected resonances.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This is Ninamusing's amazing H/C WIP. When I first encountered it, it grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go. It's a love story, but not one that shirks the darker moments these three are capable of. Both the characters and their adventures are 100% believable; if Doctor Who didn't run in a family-friendly timeslot, it might look like this. Even if you don't read works-in-progress, this one's worth getting into. No matter how long you have to wait for each new chapter, it will always be worth it.

This excerpt is the point in the first chapter where I was already hooked. )

Rec: "Glass and Water"

Story: Glass and Water
Author: Becky H
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2339
Author's Summary: They met a dozen times over sixty years. The meetings were always accidental and always ended in a cheap hotel. Neither of them ever asked, or told, the other anything. The Doctor always seemed to understand. Jack never did.
Characters/Pairings: Five/Jack
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: This is a beautiful little vignette about the true nature of Jack's immortality. It's sweet and hot and timey-wimey and philosophical, and it proves that no one can show up the true nature of the Doctor's sins quite like his previous selves can. Even if you haven't watched Classic Who or aren't familiar with the fifth Doctor, you can read this one--you'll understand more than enough to "get it."

Rec: "Survivor's Guilt"

Story: Survivor's Guilt
Author: amberite
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7382
Author's Summary: An attempt at persuading the Doctor for a friendly shag turns into something far darker. Came out of a comment to the effect that the Ninth Doctor really is crazier than the Tenth; the Tenth has healed up enough to act out, while Nine is just all inward-pointed knives.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack
Warnings: BDSM, explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: "Survivor's Guilt" is incredibly dark in all the right ways. It's Jack hitting on the Doctor and being let in farther than either of them bargained for. I love this story because we get to see Jack's empathy at work--his remarkable ability to read and understand people. It hurts beautifully, and at the end, the darkness isn't quite so dark anymore. (Also, it was the first time I'd ever seen anyone use Jack as a coffee filter--which amused me greatly).

Rec: An Overpowering Staleness by yamx

Story: An Overpowering Staleness
Author: Yamx
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 19,500
Author's Summary: The Doctor has to use the Chameleon Arch while traveling with Rose and Jack. What will happen, and how will it affect their relationship?
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I will be honest and say right up front that this is the fic [livejournal.com profile] yamx wrote for me when I won her in [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti - but even if it weren't, I'd be reccing it anyway, because it was so far beyond anything I ever hoped for when I gave her the prompt. A Chameleon Arch'd Nine isn't something many writers in the fandom have taken on, because, I think, it's difficult to think about: a Nine without the TARDIS, without his Time Lordliness, would be . . . a mess. [livejournal.com profile] yamx chooses to focus less on why Nine is hiding and more on how it affects him and his traveling companions, and just as in Human Nature/Family of Blood, that proves to be far more compelling.

Rec: The Lovers by canaan

*waves* Hello, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] sahiya and I'll your reccer this week. I'll probably rec primarily New Who, where my favorite pairings are Jack/Doctor/Rose and Jack/Doctor. But I'm going to try and rec some Classic Who as well.

Today we have one of my very favorite stories ever.

Story: The Lovers
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 11k
Author's Summary: Rose wants to see something really different. Jack wants the Doctor to quit shying away from him. Nobody wants what they actually get, or it wouldn't be Doctor Who.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Dark and slightly gruesome in parts.

Recced because: This fic fits into [livejournal.com profile] canaana's Major Arcana series, which goes AU as of "Parting of the Ways." But I think this story stands on its own pretty well, and is my favorite of the series for the way it deals with Jack's immortality. It's grim and difficult in parts, but the payoff is worth it, and [livejournal.com profile] canaana's characterization of Jack is, as always, stellar.

Rec: Hourglass, by Schildkroet

Story: Hourglass
Author: Schildkroet
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 15,594
Author's Summary:
LotTL AU. The Master doesn't die. The Doctor 'keeps' him. Trapped in the TARDIS together they have nowhere to run, and the Doctor slowly goes mad. The Master already is.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Tenth Doctor, Master (Simm)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Non-Con

Recced because: It's absolutely devastating. Out of all of the wave of fics that could have had "The Master doesn't die. The Doctor 'keeps' him" as their summary, this is my favourite. It is dark, twisted, and kind of horrific. But it's an incredibly powerful piece of fic, from the first to last line.

Rec: Quantum Equilibrium by pocketmouse

Story: Quantum Equilibrium
Author: pocketmouse
Rating: Adult/NC-17
Word Count: 11,466
Author's Summary: Who makes the first move?
Characters: Eleven/Amy/Rory
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recc'ed because: Do we have a fandom term for "smart smut"? (Smurt?-- No, no, that's horrible. Never mind). Anyway, whatever you call it, this fic has it, in spades. It's totally hot, bordering on a voyeuristic kind of kink, but only just, and the thing is, it's completely in character for the eventual threesome to evolve that way. It's inventive and gorgeously written; pocketmouse weaves the relationship non-linearly among past and present stories, misadventures, rescues, wry humor, and poignant character studies of all three of the main characters. Brilliant work, really. Save it for home; it's completely NSFW, but do go read it.

Excerpt (not explicit but not vanilla either) )

rec: And the Beat... by seren ccd

Story: And the Beat...
Author: seren ccd
Rating: R
Word Count: 3350
Author's Summary: This is the story of when John met Amy.
Characters/Pairings: Amelia Pond/The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
I love the Eleventh Doctor, and I love Amy Pond. And I especially love them in this.  This story reads beautifully, and the characters stay in form throughout despite the fact they are, shall we say, not quiet themselves for the majority of the fic. And though it's end is a little painful, I really can't see this Doctor doing anything else, and it's part of what makes this story so worth the read.

Rec: Only a Northern Song by Roach Patrol

To wrap up my weekend, I'm going to rec at least two pieces that explore to very different, yet similar aspects of EoT.  This one involves the way the Time War  and what happened to the Time Lords and their fate that  was explored in that episode.

Story:  Only a Northern Song
Author:  Roach Patrol

Rating:  Adult/R
Word Count: 4381/one-shot
Author's Summary: A dark and nasty little story from the beginning of the Time War. The Lord President Rassilon seeks to educate his Council on the ill-advised nature of disobedience, and demonstrate the consequences of recklessly, deliberately, and repeatedly engaging in said ill-advised action. The Doctor is just the right men for the job. After all, if you can't beat them, change them.

Characters/Pairings: Rassilon, 8th Doctor, 9th Doctor, various other Time Lords
Warnings: graphic rape and torture, character death
Recced because:  I know there are a lot of people who weren't happy with how RTD presented the Time Lords and the effect the Time War had on them in EoT.  I however thought it was quite believeable that war could have driven most of the Time Lords insane.  It also gave me a new theory on how the regeneration from the Eighth Doctor to the Ninth Doctor could have come about.  Thus far this is the only fic that deals with both the Time Lords as we saw them in EoT, in particular Rassilon, and the regeneration we can only speculate about, which runs similar to some of my own theories.  It's a very dark and and chilling story, not for the easily squicked or triggered, but a very vivid and good story nonetheless.

Rec: Jack Harkness - Super Temp by madder_rose

Let's have a long and dark trip with Torchwood for our Thursday reading.

Story: Jack Harkness - Super Temp
Author: madder_rose
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 38609/33 chapters. Complete
Author's Summary: Jack Harkness lives in a cubicled office. Then one day, he meets a blue eyed man, and things slowly start to change.

Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Rhys Williams, Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, OCs, Jack/OC, Gwen/Rhys, Jack/Ianto
Warnings: Domestic Violence/Rape, Torture, Mind Control, Adult language, character death

Recced because: What starts out seemingly as a complete AU, quickly turns into a terrifying and twisted story, involving a secret, evil branch of Unit, technology that's scary in both it's implimentation in the story and how scary it could be if used in real life, and a Jack who's victimized by both technology and the environment he's been placed in. Also features a kick-ass Ianto who takes no prisoners and is very much like the man who put shot Owen in the shoulder in Capt. Jack Harkness and used a stun gun to incapacitate one of the villians in Meat.

Excerpt )

Wednesday's child is full of woe... okay, and giggles.

Happy Wednesday!  I come bringing mid-week relief, in the form of this fabulous fic by Karenbee.

Story: Jump
Author Karenbee
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2912
Author's Summary: Oh, she really shouldn't be here. She should just slip out into the falling dark, hope that time would fix itself.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because:: This story is the whole package. It is funny, emotional, well written, intense, sexy, sad- just good! Rose Tyler is trying to get back to the Doctor, but it turns out the dimension cannon is a less than precise instrument, and she ends up a lot of other places on the way. In one of them she meets the Doctor, but he's not met her yet. There are a very lot of rules about interacting with your own timeline, and Rose Tyler is about to break them all...

rec Wonderwall/Masterplan

Story: The Masterplan
Author: aralias
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 11557
Author's Summary: Sequel to 'Wonderwall': At the Doctor's request, the Master helps end the Time War, makes the Doctor a lot of tea and has sex with him repeatedly. It's all very nice, which makes the Master wonder if he's losing.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Roberts)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: Although this is the second in the series Wonderwall/Masterplan you really don’t need to read the first one to understand this. I eludes to the important parts. Although I would recommend reading because very good. I love this because the Doctor and Master get a happy ending and the time war is not lost. I like a happy end once in a while.

Rec: Indulgence

Story: Indulgence
Author: ladymako71
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5569
Author's Summary: I'll indulge you if you indulge me.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th)/Toshiko Sato
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: Besides Jack my favorite character on Torchwood is Tosh. I always thought she deserved a nice holiday with lots of fun. Wink! Wink! What can I say I am in it for the smut.  Seriously,  I really see this as a tribute to Tosh. It begins with Jack and the Doctor talking about their memories of her. He tells him about their trip to Japan  when it was still isolated and did not allow foreigners and her fantasy fulfilled. There is a companion piece called Edo Nights that fills in some gaps in this story though it is not a sequel.
