Everyone's always busy on Mondays, so let's start week 2 with something short:

Story: Drabbling Through History
Author: Yamx
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 687
Author's Summary: Five drabbles connecting DW/TW characters with historical events/persons.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th), The TARDIS, Jack Harkness, Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS, Amy Pond, Other Character(s), The Doctor (11th), The TARDIS, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: 100-word Drabbles are an interesting form of fiction, and are hard to write well - here Yamx has written six in which the Doctor and friends interact with various historical and legendary events. In view of the shortness of the chapters I haven't included an extract.

Story: Search and Rescue
Author: yamx
Rating: teen
Word Count: 2608
Author's Summary: Worried about the comatose Doctor, Jack makes a dangerous choice.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Rose Tyler/the Doctor (ninth)
Warnings: none

Recced because: There are some authors, and some stories, I just keep coming back to.

I think I discovered yamx while looking for stories about what happened between "The Doctor Dances" and "Boom Town," which is a rich, rich vein of fic that has been mined by excellent authors such as DameRuth, wmr, HonorH, RobinC—the list goes on and on.  yamx is one of many people who have started with "The Doctor Dances" and gone on to tell a rich, compelling, three-cornered love story, full of misunderstandings and cultural clashes and prickliness and, of course, kissing and making up.

For me personally, fics that involve telepathy are—is it possible to have nonsexual kinks?  Because if it is, telepathy is one of mine.  So are stories that acknowledge that the Doctor is different.  "Search and Rescue" does both, but despite the Doctor's acknowledged alienness, it's still very much a love story.  Love, as another fine author wrote on this site, crosses all sorts of boundaries.

So if it's late at night, and you're feeling a little low, and you just want something that makes you feel a bit of a warm glow before you head off to bed—well, I have a mental list of things to go read when that mood hits me, and "Search and Rescue" is on it.  Try it.  It might go on your list too.

Story: Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Blue Box
Author: Yamx
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 13,965
Author's Summary: John and Sherlock stumble across a strange blue box in Trafalgar Square. And that's the least weird thing to happen that day.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, Jack Harkness, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson
Warnings: None

Recced because:
This is a crossover that just had to happen, because the Doctor and Sherlock have so much in common.  Dealing with arrogant geniuses provides a number of parallels between John Watson, Jack and Rose too.  The story manages to blend the two universes together in a way that honors both, and stays true to the characters.  I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say that there are fun twists and turns throughout, and an absolutely delightful ending.

Story: Look Down
Author: Yamx
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 21712
Author's Summary: When the Doctor and Jack are sentenced to life in prison, Rose is left all alone looking for allies on a hostile alien world.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack, Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: We in fandom do like our fluff and our feel-good stories, but sometimes it's very satisfying to read something that takes on serious issues. "Look Down" does that without becoming an "issue" piece. There is plot, there is action, there is sex, there is danger, there is planning, and it all comes out all right in the end.

Story: Let's Do the Time Warp...Again
Author: Yamx
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 620
Author's Summary: There's a reason the Doctor doesn't like dancing.
Characters/Pairings: Nine, Jack, Rose
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's the Doctor, Jack, and Rose again, but this time funny. Interlinked drabbles of timey-wimey crackiness. I don't know what to say without giving it away, so here's an excerpt:

"I still don't understand," Rose said. "We can't just take their TARDIS away, can we?"

"Wanna bet?" The Doctor started flipping switches and pulling levers.

Story: But What That Place Could Be
Author: Yamx
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4310
Author's Summary: On Jack’s first morning onboard the TARDIS, he and the Doctor have a serious disagreement with an unexpected outcome.
Characters/Pairings: Nine, Jack, Rose
Warnings: none

Recced because: Following the emotionally riveting Father's Day, we have The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, where Nine and Jack meet and don't like or trust each other very much. Right on the heels of that, we have Boomtown, where Nine and Jack seem like incredibly good friends. There's quite a canonical gap there!! This wonderful canon-consistent fic ties all four of these episodes together in a wonderful package. This fic gave me everything I never knew I wanted in terms of context for Nine and Jack's friendship, and is a VERY insightful reevaluation of Father's Day, to boot! This wonderful story makes the close bond we see in late s1 make more sense, and it provides some good character development for both of them. I highly recommend this fic - especially to any fan of s1, any Jack fan, and anyone who counts Father's Day among their favorite episodes.

Story: An Overpowering Staleness
Author: Yamx
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 19,500
Author's Summary: The Doctor has to use the Chameleon Arch while traveling with Rose and Jack. What will happen, and how will it affect their relationship?
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I will be honest and say right up front that this is the fic [livejournal.com profile] yamx wrote for me when I won her in [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti - but even if it weren't, I'd be reccing it anyway, because it was so far beyond anything I ever hoped for when I gave her the prompt. A Chameleon Arch'd Nine isn't something many writers in the fandom have taken on, because, I think, it's difficult to think about: a Nine without the TARDIS, without his Time Lordliness, would be . . . a mess. [livejournal.com profile] yamx chooses to focus less on why Nine is hiding and more on how it affects him and his traveling companions, and just as in Human Nature/Family of Blood, that proves to be far more compelling.

Story: Deal
Author: Yamx
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,265
Author's Summary: Jack has a problem, and believes he’s found an easy solution. The Doctor has a thing or two to say about that.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/9
Warnings: N/A

Recced because: I had a tough time deciding which of the stories in The "Deal" Series to rec; I enjoy all of them. I decided on this one because it's the one the series is named after.

This is the story of Jack's early days on the TARDIS, before Boom Town. Jack doesn't know how long the Doctor will allow him to stay on board, and he doesn't expect to be treated anything like Rose. This leads to a potentially dangerous decision and an agreement between Jack and the Doctor.

Yamx gets the voices just right. There are no grand or emotional declarations; just two men edging carefully around each other and into something new.

As I said, this is the namesake story of a series (it's actually the second); there are currently seven with an eighth "in progress". I'll cheat (a little) and recommend all of them.
