Story: Abandoned Companion
Author: Sigyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1937
Author's Summary: "Sarah Jane is taking a bus ride home, and runs into an eccentric stranger with deep sad eyes and a wildly vivid coat. Takes place after The Five Doctors and Trial of a Time Lord, respectively."
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Sixth Doctor, references to Fourth Doctor, Peri Brown
Warnings: None

Recced because: This short foray into what may or may not have been is most wonderful, I think, because it gives a bit of closure to Six and Sarah Jane when they each need it most. I was particularly impressed by Six's emotional characterization--good Six is relatively hard to come by. As a whole, "Abandoned Companion" is delightfully in-character, fits neatly into canon, and is the sort of story that occasionally makes the reader cry. (I mean this in the best possible way.) It's fluffy without being too fluffy, poignant and touching while still not too heavy--all in all, a lovely read.

Sorry this is late, but I was at a conference all day, and got home shortly before midnight.  (It’s still Tuesday somewhere, right?)  Now we take a visit back to Classic Who...

Story: Impossible
Author: Sigyn
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1996
Author's Summary: The Doctor is in an impossible situation. He's been banished to earth with his memory sliced and his TARDIS gutted. If only he could gnaw off a leg -- it would be better than just sitting and enduring it. Is there any reason to keep on fighting?
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is an insightful portrait of the Third Doctor in the early days of that incarnation.  Sigyn shows us a Doctor full of frustration and rage at the situation he finds himself in. The Time Lords forced him to regenerate (an execution of sorts), tampered with his mind to block his knowledge of time travel, and exiled him to Earth. The wanderer who once called himself “a citizen of the universe” is now confined to one small planet.  He takes out his frustration on his two closest human friends: brilliant Cambridge scientist Liz Shaw, and the stalwart Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Story: From the First -- Oh, Those Human Women!
Author: Sigyn
Rating: Teen, some adult themes
Word Count: 7,214
Author's Summary: As the 10th Doctor considers his possible future, or lack thereof, with Martha Jones, he is drawn to remember his very first human lover -- the Aztec woman Cameca. What is it about human women? Assumes familiarity with Gridlock and general NuWho history.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st), Martha Jones, Cameca, Brannigan, Valerie
Warnings: As the author notes - sex scenes, but nothing graphic.

Recced because: Typically, sex scenes tend to make me blush and hide like an eight-year-old under the duvet. If they're tastefully done, I can dig 'em - I may be immature, but stronger stuff lurks beneath!

Anyhow, this is one of the best stories I've come across where sexual themes are the main focus of the plot. The First Doctor, by most accounts not the first to pop into mind where such scenes are concerned, manages to be delightfully accurate and adorable. Cameca is feisty. Martha cuddles kitten-babies. Kitten-babies. One of my favourite fics on Teaspoon.

It’s my penultimate day of fiction gathering and of course Doctor Who is on tonight (well for me anyway). But since we’ve already had a visit from Amy and Rory, let’s see what the Fourth Doctor and Leela are up to instead!

Story: Running All The Time
Author: Sigyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1908
Author's Summary: The Doctor had been treating Leela like a student, trying to teach her history and her heritage, how to see the universe through the lens of scientific truth, rather than superstition and ritual. He was slowly stripping away a lifetime of savage brutality, in an attempt to reveal the brilliant and singular woman he knew her to be. But he began to suspect his one-side training was robbing her of something just as precious as her intellect.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Leela
Warnings: None

Recced because: Leela was one of those Companions which as a child I didn’t totally ‘get’ at the time since I saw her in the odd story as merely ‘some sort of savage type’. Whilst this is the case the truth is that if you look past that and her appeal for the Dads in the audience she’s a fantastic companion because of her view on the universe. Leela isn’t stupid but merely ignorant of aspects of society she has never seen and yet often some of her lines on the show demonstrated a keen mind interested to understand and give her own opinions. This story is great because Sigyn takes the Doctor’s desire to educate her as seen during the show and display that it is important that Leela should retain parts of her old life as much as embrace new ones. In short - the Doctor can learn from Leela as much as she can from him. This very idea has made Leela one of my favourite companions as an adult and this fanfic a clear demonstration of that fact.

Story: Sleep
Author: Sigyn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,844
Author's Summary:
Owen is forced to drag a sodden and semi-conscious Toshiko home. What do you do with a beautiful, willing and emotionally vulnerable woman when you are already dead? Takes place after an unspecified horrific event, just before the events in Fragments and Exit Wounds.
Characters/Pairings: Owen, Tosh
Warnings: 2,660

Recced because:  What could be more seasonally appropriate that zombies? Zombies, and the ladies who love them? This is short, sad, sweet, and very plausible. I've always had a soft spot for Tosh and Owen's doomed romance, and this fic really cuts to the heart of the pairing and offers a quiet moment of grace.
