ext_348818: Jack Harkness. (nice arse Doctor)
[identity profile] canaana.livejournal.com
Story: Survivor's Guilt
Author: amberite
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 7382
Author's Summary: An attempt at persuading the Doctor for a friendly shag turns into something far darker. Came out of a comment to the effect that the Ninth Doctor really is crazier than the Tenth; the Tenth has healed up enough to act out, while Nine is just all inward-pointed knives.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack
Warnings: BDSM, explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: "Survivor's Guilt" is incredibly dark in all the right ways. It's Jack hitting on the Doctor and being let in farther than either of them bargained for. I love this story because we get to see Jack's empathy at work--his remarkable ability to read and understand people. It hurts beautifully, and at the end, the darkness isn't quite so dark anymore. (Also, it was the first time I'd ever seen anyone use Jack as a coffee filter--which amused me greatly).

Story: Step In, Step Out, Walk Around
Author: amberite
Rating: It's listed as "all ages," but there's some profanity and the subject matter is… well, I don't know what you'd call it. That's what makes the fic. Anyway, if screening this for younguns, I'd call it a "teen," personally.
Word Count: 439
Author's Summary: Repeat anything enough times with meaning, and it becomes an obsession, even a fetish.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha (Ten/Martha?)
Warnings: As for rating.

Recced because: Martha plays a game with the Doctor and gradually realizes that she doesn't know quite what the game's about. Then she, like us, perhaps begins to get an inkling, and the whole thing gets much worse.

I don't know that I'd call this dark!fic, exactly, though there's a dark current to it. But "dark" also seems too simplistic a label for what turns out to be a condensed character piece for the Doctor, Martha, and—just possibly?—Who fans and our fascination. A creepy and yet still sort of touching look at what living so long and knowing so many might have done to the Doctor's head. This fic's so short that it's hard to say much without spoiling something, so I'll just push off and give you the excerpt.

Story: Decanted Memories
Author: amberite
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 6576
Author's Summary: The past is best served as a flaming cocktail. Takes place between "The Doctor Dances" and "Boomtown." And when you think you’re swimming to the surface You’re swimming - straight down -- Laurie Anderson, “Freefall”
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose/Jack
Warnings: BDSM
Recced because: This story about Jack's memory, the reality and unreality of the TARDIS, and the power of friendship, is remarkable, and beautifully told. Jack's and Rose's conversations are pure pleasure to read, because they tell the reader so much about the characters - and about the way people learn about each other. The writing is dense, full of wisdom, mesmerizing images, and a solid story that still manages to shimmer with beauty.

I managed to miss yesterday, so, since I had the week all planned you get two in a row to make up for that. So I bring you two pieces of Sarah/Doctor smut.

Story:Context
Author: amberite
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: "Oh yes." His voice was a faint moan. "Read me, Sarah Jane." Symbols danced through his skin, under her fingers.
Issue of consent is dealt with, though not as non-con or questionable. Awkwardness. Alien smut. Feminism. Text smut. Human smut. Weird Fourth Doctor brain smut. That all right?
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: none
Word Count: 4191

Recced because: The Doctor's thought processes are suitably alien, and yet the smut doesn't seem gratuitous or out of character for either of them. It's too well thought out to be PWP and the whole thing is incredibly hot.

Story: The Road to Hell
Author: kijikun and sakuracorr
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Its also paved with ginger beer, shiny dresses, and misunderstandings.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: none
Word Count: 5928

Recced because: Drunk Doctor is always fun and this story is by turns sad and serious and incredibly absurd. Plus there's Ten in a shiny dress and smut, in that order.

Story: Come Back to Tell All (I Shall Tell You All)
Author: Amberite
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: An overview of the Third Doctor's life, around the themes of his traumatic exile and his fashion sense.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Brig, Fourth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was fascinated by the idea of the Third Doctor's dandyism as an outgrowth of his Earth exile, clothes making the man because the man was remade without his consent and has no idea who he really is beneath the surface. This story drives home just how stranded, frightened and lost the Doctor was without his TARDIS, old companions or previous identity, which makes his slow acceptance of this forced regeneration and joyous embrace of the next one all the more satisfying to read. The slash content is brief and largely offstage (as well as being a symptom of the Doctor's identity crisis itself, in its own way), but if you're in it for the velvet capes, you're in the right place.
