I began my recs with an angsty crossover. Let's end with something VERY silly...

Story: Torchwood Goes Watercolor
Author: Canaan
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1207
Author's Summary: A strange being comes through the Cardiff rift. Stranger than usual, even. Torchwood/Looney Tunes crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Other Character(s), Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a Looney Tunes crossover and ships Jack with a toon - do you really need more justification than that?

A short extract )

I hope that you've enjoyed these recs - if so, please show your appreciation of the authors by reviewing the stories!

Story: To Please
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Author's Summary:"I'm going out on a limb, here--is it a sex club?"
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Explicit sex, BDSM

Recced because: This is the story that made dozens of people say, "I'm usually really not into BDSM, but I absolutely loved this story." (Seriously. If you read it on LJ rather than Teaspoon, you could see it in the comments. Over and over again.)

That's because it's not a story about BDSM. Oh, it contains plenty of BDSM, and if you are into that, you'll love it for that reason alone. But it's so much more.

As an asexual, I'm not only not into BDSM, I'm not into sex, period. I don't mind it, but it usually bores me. In most stories, I skim over the sex scenes. In this one, I didn't. This is the story that made me understand why sex in fiction can be important. It can be used simply as titillation for the reader, sure, and that's a perfectly valid use of it--which just happens to fall perfectly flat with me. But it can also be used as a tool to explore the characters in new ways--show them open and vulnerable and let the reader experience important moments of growth in their relationships. And that is what Canaan does in To Please.

This was the story that made me realize that if I wanted to truly be able to explore all facets of my characters' lives, I had to learn to write sex. I'd never written a single sex scene, nor felt any need to, before I read this story. It wasn't prudishness, I just literally didn't care. This story showed me why I should. If you've ever read anything remotely smutty by me and enjoyed it, you have this story to thank for it.
ext_1327443: (Amy Pond Hunger Games)
[identity profile] shelwass.livejournal.com
Story: Making Amy
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 17,703
Author's Summary: In HonorH's The Wolf and the Mockingjay AU, Hunger Games victor Amy Pond is at a club, dancing in her underwear. This the story of her Games. Doctor Who/Hunger Games crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Mels, Jack Harkness, Other Characters
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing, Dubcon

Recced because: It's incredibly dark and well-written. Unlike HonorH's tale, it doesn't have a happy ending, but the ending it does provide is immensely powerful. I'd been hoping the author would finish in time for me to rec it this week on Calufrax, and what do you know? The ending popped up yesterday.

If you like the Hunger Games, read it. If you don't have prior knowledge of the Hunger Games, still read it if you like dark, AU fics, because it's brilliant, tragic, gritty, and disturbing, all wrapped up into one beautifully written package.

Capitol magic has made Amy beautiful again. The two smallest fingers of her left hand are taped to a jeweled splint while the bones heal, but she doesn't have a scar or blemish anywhere on her body. Her sunburn is gone, leaving nothing but sun-bronzed skin she knows she didn't come by honestly, because she has no tan lines. Her hair is clean and glossy, frothing around her shoulders in soft curls. She has nails again, shaped and painted. She's dressed in a long, white, sleeveless dress that flows in graceful folds down past her knees.

Jack says the dress is another goddess thing. It doesn't seem worth arguing. He paints her lying face last. It looks like there's something he wants to say, but in the end he just takes her hands, her beautiful, killing hands, and holds them gently in his own for a few moments before he leaves the room.

This week, Who fans are mourning the departure of Amy and Rory from the TARDIS, so here’s a story devoted to them.

Story: Its Eyes Are for the Stars
Author: Canaan ([livejournal.com profile] canaana on LJ)
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5378
Author's Summary: The Doctor thinks he's so old, but Rory remembers two thousand years.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Jack Harkness, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th; )Amy/Rory, pre-Eleven/Amy/Rory
Warnings: explicit sex

Reced because: I love Rory Williams. I’m fond of Amy, but I adore Rory. He is a classic of a certain type of Companion -- the ordinary person who discovers how extraordinary he really is. In this story, Amy questions Rory about the nearly two thousand years he spent as a plastic Roman soldier guarding her in the Pandorica. He tells her about some of the people he knew and cared about during that long vigil.

This is a story about love and friendship and sex, and the ways that they do (or don’t) overlap. And like all of Canaan’s stories, it is beautifully written.

I think it's high time I recced a Torchwood fic this week, and here's my first rec:

Story: Adjectives, or "Three Times Jack Didn't Shag a Member of His Team and the One Time He Got Played"
Author: Canaan
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1310
Author's Summary: What it says on the tin. Four character studies from Jack's point of view. Jack/Gwen, Jack/Ianto
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: no standard warnings apply

Recced because: The title pretty much explains what this fic's about, but this fic does a great job of explaining why Jack refused to have sex with his post-Suzie Costello team. Except for Ianto, of course.

(Also, I tried putting the whole subtitle in the header, but it cut off the D.  Blasted LiveJournal.)

Story: Raise a Glass
Author: [livejournal.com profile] canaana
Rating: Adult (but not explicit)
Word Count: 1167
Author's Summary: "He was going to kill Amy Pond. Or, well, not really. But he wouldn't mind embarrassing her thoroughly."
Characters/Pairings: Amy/Rory, Eleven/Jack
Warnings: None
Recced because:

This short, delightful fic doesn't spend a lot of time dwelling on the Doctor and Jack's past Issues, but rather skips straight to the shenanigans and hilarity by way of Amy's evil mind. Perfect for a midweek pick-me-up!
[identity profile] allonymity.livejournal.com
Story: Time and Motion
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6383
Author's Summary: "In a week or two, he'd have forgotten the quick grope in the alley, but he knew he'd remember the conversation with the kid for a long time." Set in the middle of the 20th century.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/OC
Warnings:. Explicit Sex

Recced because: Even if you ordinarily avoid like the plague any fic with original characters, this one is worth a try. Amelia (who was named well before Eleven’s companion) is an extremely well-developed character, and watching her story unfold also gives us an interesting perspective on Jack’s life. Plus watching how Jack moves through the mid-twentieth century is a treat.

*waves* Hello, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] sahiya and I'll your reccer this week. I'll probably rec primarily New Who, where my favorite pairings are Jack/Doctor/Rose and Jack/Doctor. But I'm going to try and rec some Classic Who as well.

Today we have one of my very favorite stories ever.

Story: The Lovers
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 11k
Author's Summary: Rose wants to see something really different. Jack wants the Doctor to quit shying away from him. Nobody wants what they actually get, or it wouldn't be Doctor Who.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Jack/Rose
Warnings: Dark and slightly gruesome in parts.

Recced because: This fic fits into [livejournal.com profile] canaana's Major Arcana series, which goes AU as of "Parting of the Ways." But I think this story stands on its own pretty well, and is my favorite of the series for the way it deals with Jack's immortality. It's grim and difficult in parts, but the payoff is worth it, and [livejournal.com profile] canaana's characterization of Jack is, as always, stellar.

Story: Mobius
Author: Canaan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5472
Author's Summary: To save the universes, they had to save the Doctor. To save the Doctor, they had to save Donna. To save Donna, a certain non-Euclidean geometry was required. Timey-wimey angstfic with some h/c moments.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Rose, Jack/Ianto, Tosh, Owen, Gwen, Donna, Jackie, others
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic, which fills in the missing period in Rose's life during Turn Left when she was looking for Donna, is dark and difficult and thorny. It's full of sharp angles that stab and jab until you hurt. It's about might-have-beens and should-have-beens, and it's never easy or smooth, but it's worth every painful moment. Canaan writes wonderful darkfic, and here she serves up the best.
