Recced because: This fic is like the best of Twilight Zone in the way it quietly unfolds, starting with a mystery -- why doesn't Jack want to call on the Doctor for help? -- and then turning on a simple, horrifying reveal. The story was written back in 2008, so it's AU now, but perhaps that just means this happened in an alternate timeline (something else both Doctor Who and Twilight Zone have in common).

Let's take a break from depressing fic, shall we.

Story: A Quarter of Your Kingdom

Author's Summary: Jack and the Doctor have saved the world. Again. Now it is up to Owen to save them, on threat of imaginary death. Such is the life of a doctor at Torchwood.

Recced because: It's fluffy fluff. But even though I have a very low threshold for fluff, it doesn't bother me or get on my nerves in the case of this story. A Quarter of Your Kingdom manages to be funny and fun and sweet. The Doctor and Jack show up back in Torchwood after an adventure gone somewhat wrong, and for the first part of the story, Owen finds himself being the Doctor's Doctor in a very Owen-ish, sarcastic way. The second part of the story has a lot of entertaining, comic scenes between the Doctor and Jack, and in between the comedy, a lot of sweetness appears.

Hello, I'm Auntie Singe Addams and you'll be my captive for the next week. Recced because: It's absolutely devastating. Out of all of the wave of fics that could have had "The Master doesn't die. The Doctor 'keeps' him" as their summary, this is my favourite. It is dark, twisted, and kind of horrific. But it's an incredibly powerful piece of fic, from the first to last line.

Recced because: How can I not? This is a weird and painful love story, exploring Mickey's not-quite-fitting role, with an odd pairing that somehow manages to work exactly. Schildkroet's somewhat formal diction fits the story exactly, and gives it the feel of some of the best of the BFAs. It's sweet and poignant and painful and gorgeous and ow.

Recced because: Despite its brevity, this story will stick with you long after you've read it. I read it first right after Journey's End, and the parallels to Donna's ending made me get pretty disgustingly emotional. Jamie's voice is wonderful (and isn't clogged up with unnecessary accenting) and the brief story flows beautifully. I really like this story.

Recced because: I wasn't crazy about Jenny on the show, but this story treats her so lovingly it won me over; I already adored Astrid, and this is a perfect examination of what could be post-Voyage of the Damned. This is a beautiful little bite of a story, with Jenny learning, exploring, and running both from and toward her past, and finding an ally in an unexpected form. They are each other's centre of gravity: together they can take on the universe.
