Story: Alternatives: New Beginnings
Author: Persiflage
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 17227
Author's Summary: Trying to find his feet in Pete's World, the Human-Doctor learns something unexpected about himself and makes a new friend.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), Alt!Martha/The Doctor (Duplicate 10th),
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This is the first in a series called the Alternatives.I have read several fics that take place in the alt verse that has Rose quickly accepting the human!doctor and him quickly getting over the fact that he is now human and will never travel in the Tardis through space and time again. Although they are well written and I find them entertaining., I just find it unrealistic. He is now human and has part of the Doctor and Donna in him. Donna had a lot of problems having to do with the death of her father and how she was treated by her mother causing her, at least as I saw it, to have some real issues the most noticeable of which is her self esteem and her own self worth. They are a big part of who she is and I would think that he would have some those issues as well. They are never addressed in most fics. They are in this one. I see it as a big step in him figuring out who he is because no matter how much he is like the doctor and even has his memories he is not the Doctor. He can’t keep being defined by who The Doctor is, he needs to find his own identity and needs to know who he is to be happy. Also he I always saw him as mostly human he still has a Time Lord brain and if he was all human he could not handle it because I thought that was the problem with Donna. If he was completely human wouldn’t the Doctor had to do the same thing to the human!Doctor that he did to Donna. This isn’t addressed directly but he is shown as being not quite human as they thought after and incident at Torchwood. I also love this fic because it has alt!Martha and she is just great in this. She has come into her own without The Doctor and is now able to help his human self. The only real warning is there is a bit of Rose bashing. She is portrayed as being very immature and lack compassion towards the human!Doctor.

The Children of Time Will Gather by RobinC

Story: The Children of Time Will Gather
Author: RobinC ([livejournal.com profile] lindenharp on Live Journal)
Rating: All
Word Count: 14,082
Author's Summary: After the events of Journey's End, the Doctor's friends and companions gather together to remember the past and to prepare for the future.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, Mickey Smith, Wilfrid Mott, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Luke Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: Although this has the feel of a Journey's End fix-it, it isn't one. What it is is a look at how the people we see in Journey's End cope with the aftermath and with a threat to Donna. We see a wonderful friendship building up between the different characters that I truly wish were (shown in) canon.

Although I enjoy the entire story, my favorites are probably the UNIT officer's description of the events on the Valiant and what he calls the principal players and Wilf's role in the "performance" (because we need more Wilf).

Warnings:
None, although a touch of language near the beginning.

Recced because:

I love this story. Period. It's a Donna-centric AU, where Team TARDIS get a bit narked that the Doctor wiped Donna's memories, and try to help her as much as they can. After they find her a job, Donna does a little bit of Donna-iness, and she slowly puts her life back together again. Yes, I know that it's been recced before, but seriously, it's worth reccing twice. Watch out for the suprise twist ending :-) A great story, with incredible characterisations.

Recced because:

A nice, fluffy Rose fic today. It's an AU for Parting of the Ways, where Rose takes the long road in getting the Doctor back. Along the way, she concocts a brilliant - if risky - plan, involving circumventing the Blinovitch Limitation Effect, and rationalising with a suicidal... well, you'll see in the fic :-D. Short, sweet, and fluffy. (Probably needed after Mortek... XD)

Gone For A Cup Of Tea (back in six months) by netgirl_y2k

So pretty much every story Netgirl_y2k's ever written has been recced here already-- but not every story. And not this story, which should be and probably is a crime! Lucky for you guys though I'm here now, and lying to the police for you fixing that.

Story: Gone For A Cup Of Tea (back in six months)
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating:All Ages
Word Count: 4204
Author's Summary: The highly unlikely but excellent adventures of Ten, Mickey and Rhys.
Characters/Pairings: the Tenth Doctor, Micky Smith, Rhys Williams.
Warnings: please DO NOT warn for slash or het.

Recced because: this story is wonderfully funny, which should be reason enough. Add on to that Micky and Rhys, who are solid, decent, normal guys and also pretty much the embodiment of the mundane lives their girlfriends are trying to escape from, throw the two blokes into the TARDIS with the poor, poor Doctor, who is much more used to hanging out with admiring women, and you've got pure gold.

Greetings and salutations...

Hey folks,
Many apologies for the late start to my reccing week; my brain has been occupied for the last few days with trying to wheedle a historic Scottish property into exhibiting a cake the size of a tennis table in its Great Hall....This may or may not tell you something about my taste in fic. At any rate, let the reccage commence :-)

Story: Here There Be

Author's Summary: Rose Tyler battles Prehistoric Beasts, Torquay housewives and her new therapist.
Characters/Pairings:Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake, Pete Tyler, Jackie Tyler, OMC
Warnings:N/A
Recced because:This is one of the first fics I read when I was discovering Doctor Who, and in a lot of ways, it's still my benchmark as far as good fic is concerned. It's set in Pete's World after the events of 'Doomsday', and is both a terrifically well-written character piece that makes me thoroughly identify with Rose in a way that the show never quite managed to do, and is also a rollicking good tale to boot. The pacing is lively and built around a deadpan sense of humor and all of the characters are given unexpected, truthful, tender, plausible moments which really build on how Season Two left them. The original characters are just that and the dialogue fizzes throughout. And there's dinosaurs. Come on, guys, dinosaurs. Who doesn't love a T-Rex?

rec: Possibilities, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bananas by Rosa_Acicularis

Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] stellastars and I'm excited to be reccing here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax again this week. I'll be sharing some of the stories that have caught my attention, including a mixture of Classic and New Who, Torchwood, and SJA. To get us started this week, here's a bit of humor to brighten your Monday!

Story: Possibilities, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bananas
Author: rosa_acicularis / [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 13,660
Author's Summary: Rose Tyler lives the life fantastic, her feet on the ground and her head in the stars. A Pete's World fic. With bananas.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Jake Simmonds, Mickey Smith, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, OC, The Doctor (10th), Rose/Ten, Jake/Mickey
Warnings: None
Note: Though finished recently, this fic was begun before Series 4 aired. It contains spoilers and canon only through The Runaway Bride.

Recced because: This fic is LOL-funny and laughter makes the start of any week better. The premise of the story is hilarious, there's a fun Jake/Mickey subplot, and Rose's younger brother (author-created and named "Reggie") adds humor that only an eight-year old could bring. Plus, with phrases like The mysterious bananary continued the language itself will put smiles on faces. (Just try saying the word "bananary" and see if it doesn't make you grin!) But this story is more than laughs, too. As the tale progresses and the culprit behind the bananary revealed, the reader sees a Rose who has matured as an individual: she's built a life for herself without the Doctor and has a firm sense of her place in Pete's world. This well-developed characterization gives the story substance and (combined with the humor) makes for an incredibly satisfying read. I hope it will brighten your day as much as it did mine!

REC: Never Quite Normal by Pairadox Timeline

I've been trying to avoid reccing ongoing WIPs because I know many like to read completed stories. However the authors of this story updated this one today, so I just had to include it in the rec list.

Story: Never Quite Normal
Author: Pairadox Timeline
Rating: Adult/R
Word Count: 57,480; currently at 26 chapters
Author's Summary: He can't abide his face in the mirror or the memory of what he has done. The silence has made him insane and the insanity has made him dangerous. At the end of the Time War, the Doctor takes drastic steps, with the help of friends old and new. Nine AU.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose, Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart/Doris Stewart, Harry Sullivan, John Benton, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith
Warnings: Adult language, some violence, issues of alcohol abuse.

Recced because: The authors take a broken and dmanaged post - Time War Nine, and spins a brilliant AU based on making a drastic path with his life. The bonds between himself and Classic Who characters, the Brigadier, Benton, and Harry Sullivan are lovingly evident and his meeting with Rose and the development of their relationship is painfully poignant. Both Classic and New Who fans will find unique gems to enjoy about this story and it's overall tale of pain, loss, and trying to put oneself back together again.

rec: old friends made new, by coru

Story: Old Friends Made New
Author: Coru
Rating:All ages
Word Count: 13068
Author’s Summary: The Ninth Doctor, Rose, Mickey and Sarah Jane Smith work together to uncover the strange behaviours at Deffry Vale High School. AU reworking of School Reunion, in 'A Man Who Wasn't There' series.
Characters/Pairing: Nine/Rose (flirting and denial), Mickey Smith, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: Coru is in the process of writing an Alt Season 2, in which Nine survives. It's been done, yes, but never quite so well. One of the brilliant things about fanfic is the ability to explore what might have been, how a single alteration can change everything. This series, known as "A Man Who Wasn't There", hits just the right balance of covering basically the same adventures, but with the differences of reaction and method of the previous Doctor. While it's a general good idea to start with the first story in a series, I've recced my favorite episode so far, an alt version of School Reunion.

The reunion with Sarah Jane is every bit as sweet as the original, but in this version the implication that this wonderful, strong woman has been simply pining after the doctor for decades is decidedly played down. Mickey makes a decision that will alter future plots, but hopefully increase his sense of self-worth rather sooner. All in all the basic plot begins and ends the same, but the path taken to get there is believably altered.

rec: The Idiot's Guide to Foiling Alien Invasions by netgirl_y2k

It's Monday, and we all need a bit of fun, yes? Therefore I bring you this, as my first recommendation for this week. It's not crack (that'll come later in the week), but I hope you'll enjoy. And if you do enjoy, I hope you'll remember to leave a comment to let the author know.

Story: The Idiot's Guide to Foiling Alien Invasions
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 20248
Author’s Summary: Jackie and Mickey save the day by bickering, drinking lots of tea and spending a lot of time in the pub in the middle of the day.
Characters/Pairing: Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler. With appearances by the Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, John Benton, Donna Noble, and Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because:  In this delightful story, the Doctor (Ninth) and Rose take a backseat, leaving the action to the often tragically underappreciated Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler. Amongst the fun and humor we explore some more serious themes often glossed over, such as the year Mickey spent as a suspected murderer, and how the relationship of Jackie and Mickey healed from that and became friends in their shared experience of those left behind.

Rec: Somewhere Between Universes

Story: Somewhere Between Universes
Author: [livejournal.com profile] carawj
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,570
Author's Summary: The Dimension Cannon has sent Rose to a time traveler, but it isn't the one she was hoping for.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Rose, Mickey
Warnings: None

Recced because: How did Rose get that dimension cannon working, anyway? Maybe all she needed was help from a fellow time traveler. An older and more world-weary Ace plays the Doctor's role here, not just by helping Rose with the cannon, but also by inspiring her to keep hope alive that she'll find the Doctor and save the universe. This is a short piece, but the character voices are pitch-perfect, and it's easy to think of this as a missing scene from canon.

Rec: Operation Awesome

Story: Operation Awesome
Author: AND
Rated: All Ages
Word count: 13981
Author’s summary:  Does Donna really need to remember her travels with the Doctor to unlock the confidence and strength she found on her travels with him? Doesn't that suggest that there's something wrong with living on Earth? Sarah Jane and Torchwood gang up to save Donna - one way or another.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Ianto Jones, Mickey Smith, Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Alan Jackson, Wilfred Mott, Other Character(s) - including some surprise Old-School companions
Warnings: None

Reason for Recommendation: Donna Noble is awesome. It's as simple as that. And so is Team TARDIS, or more properly the Doctor's 'biggest family in the universe'. AND set out to prove, in this story, that there is nothing less awesome about being a human being, living a life on Earth, than there is about travelling in the TARDIS with the Doctor. With or without the Doctor, with or without her memories of being with him Donna is awesome and has potential to be more awesome still. Oh, and the Doctor is a complete wanker - and that's a direct quote. I absolutely love the team effort in this story, from the Torchwood gang to Sarah Jane's crew to Martha and assorted others (Mickey and Jack's early conversation is side-splittingly hilarious), and the way they combine to - metaphorically - bang the Doctor's head against the wall of his own emo. AND writes Donna brilliantly too. Watch for Donna's meeting with the baby-faced man from Wales - and my favourite scene, close to the end, with the wonderful Wilf.

Rec: A Cuddle for a Dalek

Story: A Cuddle for a Dalek
Author: [livejournal.com profile] spastasmagoria
Rating: All-Ages
Word Count: 1697
Author's Summary: There's only one thing the deranged dustbin wants in all the universe.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara, Ian, Peri, Ace, Rose, Mickey, Jack, Gwen, Future!Doctor, and a Dalek.
Warnings: Silliness

This one is a wonderfully humorous multi-era romp, all centered around a Dalek (capable of a "temporal shift of infinite sadness") that just wants a hug. Particularly amusing are the reactions of Peri and Ace, but every scene is quite brilliant (including the small hints about the fashion sense of the future!Doctor).

Rec: Stepping on a Butterfly

Story: Stepping on a Butterfly
Author: Bobsyeruncle
Rating: All Ages - Swearing - Angst
Word Count: 9144
Author's Summary: Little white lies; the Reaper flies, the Doctor cries, Martha dies.
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Leo Jones, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Duplicate 10th)
Warnings: Character death

Recced because: It's my favorite post JE story. Martha does things on her terms all while calling the Doctor on his massive bullshit and forcing him to address his tendency of failing to let others make their own decisions.

rec: battle of wills

Story: Battle of Wills
Author: Minion
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2984
Author's Summary: My version of a post-"Doomsday" story. Rose wants to move on with her new life, but no one will let her.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Tenth Doctor, the TARDIS
Warnings: Hilarity

Recced because: A mockery of certain Post-Doomsday stories. This should be quite enough to recommend it, IMO.

Little excerpt of choice )

Rec: Life in Technicolor

Story: Life in Technicolor
Author:  kaydee_falls
Rating: Teen
Word Count:  11,091
Author’s Summary: There's a woman alive in this world who wasn't alive before, and that woman is her, and this entire universe is different because she's here now. (Post-Doomsday Rose!fic, AU from that point on. Mainly Rose/Doctor with a side of Rose/Jack.)
Characters/Pairings:  Rose/Ten, Rose/alt!Jack, Mickey Smith

Recced because: Life in Technicolor totally blew me away! This story is elegant at every level: structure, prose, emotion, and more.  Flashbacks and imagined futures intertwine with the present as  Rose lives on Pete’s World, trying to adjust to her new life.  The progression of her emotions and choices is just right.  There’s a fabulous appearance by alt!Jack. The language is plum gorgeous, the details inventive, and the dialog always in-character.  If all that isn’t enough, the story makes marvelous use of Bad Wolf that at one point literally made me gasp out loud. (Yes, I was that immersed in the story.)   If you read only one story I rec this week, make it this one.

Rec: Illumination by Sarah

Story: Illumination
Author: Sarah
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: In which a grieving Doctor stumbles into the alt-verse, meets a certain old companion, and takes an inconclusive road trip.
Characters: Ten, Mickey
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,800 words

Recced because: Sometime in the future, after Martha leaves him (this was written pre-S3), Ten returns to the altverse where he meets Mickey again, now old, and alone. The voices in this story are all beautifully done, and it’s tied together wonderfully. The Doctor reflects and learns about time, and getting to say goodbye, and the meaning of endings - Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright, it's not the end, the Doctor says – and while there’s no happy ending, the truth the story presents is absolutely right for this 'verse, and perfectly written. This is smart and careful and lovely.

Rec: Catch a Falling Star

Story:  Catch a Falling Star
Author:  eponymous_rose
Rating:  all ages
Word Count:  1,211
Author's Summary:  Once, when she was sixteen, she caught a piece of a falling star in her hands.
Characters/Pairings:  Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Jack Harkness
Warnings: none
Recced Because:  "Catch a Falling Star" is a rare find:  a quality Mickey fic that's not primarily a comedy.  (It does have some funny moments, particularly some bits with Martha and Jack, but they’re not the focus.)  These three short scenes featuring Mickey at different times say a great deal not only about Mickey but also about home, love, loss, and dreaming.   The author has a great grasp of all of the characters’ voices and their changes through time.  This story is subtle, wise, and beautiful.  Read it.

Rec: Fairytale

I'm back! Did you miss me?

Title: Fairytale
Author: schildkroet
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1373
Author's Summary: Once upon a time there was a boy from Earth who met a man from the stars.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Eight, Rose, Ten
Warnings: None.

Recced because: How can I not? This is a weird and painful love story, exploring Mickey's not-quite-fitting role, with an odd pairing that somehow manages to work exactly. Schildkroet's somewhat formal diction fits the story exactly, and gives it the feel of some of the best of the BFAs. It's sweet and poignant and painful and gorgeous and ow.

Characters/Pairings: Mickey, Rose
Warnings: none given

Recced because: In case you ever needed a reminder of why Mickey is awesome, read this. [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k writes him so well-- kind, fun, and so very human. Who wouldn't want Mickey Smith as their boyfriend??
