Story: Appreciation
Author: Persiflage
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2900
Author's Summary: While stuck in 1969, Martha and the Doctor run into some members of UNIT.
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (3rd), UNIT
Warnings: None

Recced because: A little timey-wineyness is always fun, and stories where the different Doctors and companions work together are about as timey-winey as you can get. This one is just fun, and a nicely handled look at the relationships between doctors and companions in different eras. That it's another Liz Shaw story is a bonus.

It’s always a sadness to get to the end of the week, and find I can only rec one more of the stories I’ve thought were great, but here we are again – I hope people have all found at least one new fic to like!

Story: Memory
Author: Persiflage
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3481
Author's Summary: A decade after she left UNIT, Liz encounters the Doctor again.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Liz Shaw
Warnings: None. (I suppose minor spoilers for BFAs The Blue Tooth and a possible spoiler (ish) for The Girl Who Never Was).

Recced because: It’s an unusual but very workable Doctor-Companion combination as Liz Shaw finds herself receiving a visit from a different man in a velvet jacket to the one she knew; a visit that both brings back unwelcome memories and helps her to deal with them.

It’s a well-written, thoughtful and measured character piece, with a bit of adventure mixed in, and a nice underlying vein of humour in the exchanges between Liz, who’s never lost her acerbic edge, and a typically enthusiastic Eight (and a more touchy-feely Doctor than Liz was ever used to). It does refer to incidents from Big Finish’s The Blue Tooth, but that shouldn’t worry you, as I was lucky enough to have this written for me a long while before I’d ever listened to that audio.

And, as for the perfect ending – it would be lovely if Big Finish ran with that one!

Happy Saturday! Today we're era hopping.

Story: A Shift in Perspective
Author:Persiflage
Rating:
 Teen
Word Count:
 50234
Author's Summary:
The Tenth Doctor goes missing and it's up to Martha Jones to track him down again, but it proves both harder and more instructive than she expects.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (All incarnations), The White Guardian, Torchwood, a plethora of companions
Warnings: Spoilers for just about everything. They are warned for in the author's notes of each section.

Recced because: Set a few months after series 4, "A Shift in Perspective" sends Martha on a journey that has her meeting the Doctor - yes, every incarnation of him. What stands out about this particular fic (and Persiflage's writing in general) is her nuanced and strong portrayal of Martha Jones: she's independent, she's strong, and she does what she has to do. Part of the charm of "A Shift in Perspective" is the fact that you get to see glimpses of Martha interacting with all of the Doctors (who are all impeccably characterized) as well as many of the previous companions. Moreover, the fic is fast-paced and features a solid plot alongside the solid characterizations. Overall, a wonderful fic to park yourself and read on a summer day (or on any day, really).

Story: Alternatives: New Beginnings
Author: Persiflage
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 17227
Author's Summary: Trying to find his feet in Pete's World, the Human-Doctor learns something unexpected about himself and makes a new friend.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (Duplicate 10th), Alt!Martha/The Doctor (Duplicate 10th),
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This is the first in a series called the Alternatives.I have read several fics that take place in the alt verse that has Rose quickly accepting the human!doctor and him quickly getting over the fact that he is now human and will never travel in the Tardis through space and time again. Although they are well written and I find them entertaining., I just find it unrealistic. He is now human and has part of the Doctor and Donna in him. Donna had a lot of problems having to do with the death of her father and how she was treated by her mother causing her, at least as I saw it, to have some real issues the most noticeable of which is her self esteem and her own self worth. They are a big part of who she is and I would think that he would have some those issues as well. They are never addressed in most fics. They are in this one. I see it as a big step in him figuring out who he is because no matter how much he is like the doctor and even has his memories he is not the Doctor. He can’t keep being defined by who The Doctor is, he needs to find his own identity and needs to know who he is to be happy. Also he I always saw him as mostly human he still has a Time Lord brain and if he was all human he could not handle it because I thought that was the problem with Donna. If he was completely human wouldn’t the Doctor had to do the same thing to the human!Doctor that he did to Donna. This isn’t addressed directly but he is shown as being not quite human as they thought after and incident at Torchwood. I also love this fic because it has alt!Martha and she is just great in this. She has come into her own without The Doctor and is now able to help his human self. The only real warning is there is a bit of Rose bashing. She is portrayed as being very immature and lack compassion towards the human!Doctor.

Story: Crossing Parallels
Author: Persiflage/[livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 11,542
Author's Summary: Investigating a potential alien invasion, Martha meets a stranger with a very familiar face.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Luther Arkwright, Torchwood, UNIT
Warnings: Sex

Recced because: I'll admit up front that Luther Arkwright is by far one of my favorite fictional characters and this fic, in many ways, is personal wish-fulfillment. As he is a polyamorous, telepathic, Tantrist, multiverse-traveler, the idea of Arkwright slipping into the world of Doctor Who makes so much sense to me as a crossover and, in this story by [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1, that is exactly what happens. Helping to fill the unfortunate dearth of Arkwright fanfic, she brings us a tale where Luther crosses paths with UNIT MO Martha Jones and assists both her and UNIT during an attempted alien invasion. As Martha comes to terms with this strange gentleman who looks much like a white-haired version of the Tenth Doctor*, she soon learns that he is a rather different man in many ways and also, along the way, she learns a lot about herself, leaving her more empowered than ever before. I feel that [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 nicely balances both the adventure and romantic elements of the plot, all the while spotlighting these two exciting characters and leaving us with an intriguing crossover.

* David Tennant voiced Arkwright in the Big Finish audio play, 'The Adventures of Luther Arkwright' (also highly recommended)

Hello, I'm [livejournal.com profile] fearlessfirefly and I'll be one of two people posting recs this week. I'll try to cover both classic and new series as evenly as possible, from Hartnell to Tennant and everyone in between.

This is one of two stories I'll be posting today to make up for missing yesterday. So, enjoy! :D

Story: Patient
Author: Persiflage
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2010
Author's Summary: Martha meets a different Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: Spoilers for s1's "Rose".

Recced because: I love the idea of Martha with Doctors other than Ten, and Persiflage does a fantastic job by imagining Martha meeting the Ninth Doctor during the events of season one - specifically the opener, "Rose". It's a Martha who has yet to stand on the moon and a Doctor still freshly wounded emotionally from the Time War, and the sparks between the two make for wonderful reading.

This is the first part of an AU series starring Martha and Nine; reccing the first story in the hopes more people start up reading this great series :D

Story: Heroic Hearts
Author: Persiflage
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 11,476
Author's Summary: On her wedding day, Martha Jones finds there's more to her fiancé than she had realised.
Characters/Pairings: Martha, Ten, other characters
Warnings: none

Recced because:
And now for something completely different: pure wish-fulfillment. Done well, as it is here, this genre tells a story that would never be told onscreen, and yet it’s exactly the story we long to hear. The wonderful thing about this fic is that the author has found a way to give us a happily ever after that doesn’t utterly violate the characterizations we’ve seen onscreen, but is still romantic, sweet, and satisfying. She does it through some creative timey-wimey stuff  – and then brings us back to the “current” generation for closure.
