Story: Consanguinitas
Author: Selena / [livejournal.com profile] selenak
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,800
Author's Summary: Five glimpses at Alice and her father.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter, Other Characters
Warnings: Spoilers through Day Three of Children of Earth.

Recced because: If you haven't seen Children of Earth and you don't know who Alice Carter is, then this fic isn't for you as it contains spoilers. If you have seen CoE -- and you found Alice to be as intriguing as I did -- then this is the perfect fic to read. It's a fine character study of Alice (and her father, too) captured in five scenes from her life. It's well-executed and when you read it, you can't help but think that this is exactly how Alice grew up.

Story: That First Night
Author: whispersecho
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: Sometimes a thing becomes so familiar you don't notice it until it's missing.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman
Warnings: None

Recced because: This drabble is a well-written coda to The Dalek Invasion of Earth. In just 100 words, whispersecho captures this moment in Susan's life and presents in it a way that makes the situation easy to relate to and its poignancy keenly felt. If I said anything more I'd give too much away; just go read it and enjoy!

Story: Chocolatey Gloop!
Author: The Secretive Bus
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,359
Author's Summary: Trying to keep one step ahead of the Daleks as they pursue him through time and space for the Taranium core, the Doctor shakes paws with a rabbit.
Characters/Pairings: Sara Kingdom, Steven Taylor, The Doctor (1st), Mavic Chen, Daleks
Warnings: None

Recced because: Written as an additional episode set amid The Daleks' Master Plan, Chocolatey Gloop! features an adventure with One, Steven Taylor, and Sara Kingdom. This story is noteworthy not just for its use of this rare TARDIS team, but for the skill with which The Secretive Bus writes the characters and the overall (highly entertaining) tone of the story. The "voices" of One, Steven, and the Daleks are particularly outstanding throughout, while the premise is quirky, unique, and funny, very much in keeping with the mood of some of the more eccentric episodes of One's era. The result is an entertaining story with superb characterizations, that fits neatly within the overall storyarc.

Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] stellastars and I'm excited to be reccing here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax again this week. I'll be sharing some of the stories that have caught my attention, including a mixture of Classic and New Who, Torchwood, and SJA. To get us started this week, here's a bit of humor to brighten your Monday!

Story: Possibilities, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bananas
Author: rosa_acicularis / [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 13,660
Author's Summary: Rose Tyler lives the life fantastic, her feet on the ground and her head in the stars. A Pete's World fic. With bananas.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Jake Simmonds, Mickey Smith, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, OC, The Doctor (10th), Rose/Ten, Jake/Mickey
Warnings: None
Note: Though finished recently, this fic was begun before Series 4 aired. It contains spoilers and canon only through The Runaway Bride.

Recced because: This fic is LOL-funny and laughter makes the start of any week better. The premise of the story is hilarious, there's a fun Jake/Mickey subplot, and Rose's younger brother (author-created and named "Reggie") adds humor that only an eight-year old could bring. Plus, with phrases like The mysterious bananary continued the language itself will put smiles on faces. (Just try saying the word "bananary" and see if it doesn't make you grin!) But this story is more than laughs, too. As the tale progresses and the culprit behind the bananary revealed, the reader sees a Rose who has matured as an individual: she's built a life for herself without the Doctor and has a firm sense of her place in Pete's world. This well-developed characterization gives the story substance and (combined with the humor) makes for an incredibly satisfying read. I hope it will brighten your day as much as it did mine!

My final rec for the week... I hope that you've enjoyed some of the stories I selected. It's been a pleasure sharing my favorites here!

Story: Home
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 8893
Author's Summary: "Home is where the heart is, though sometimes we're too busy trying to run away to recognise it."
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (9th), Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harry Sullivan, Jo Grant, Mike Yates, John Benton, UNIT
Warnings: Angst, Dark Themes, Swearing

Recced because: This fic features the intriguing combination of Three and Nine and there are four reasons why it is a standout for me: 1) the vividness of the imagery, particularly in the opening scenes; 2) the brilliant dialogue, which captures not only what these characters would say, but the exact manner in which they would say it; 3) the connections to tiny details from both New and Classic Who; and, 4) the intensity of story, dark, with raw emotion and such anguish. This story hurts, but it is so very worth the read.

Story: The Trouble With Harry
Author: Azar
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 26,386
Author's Summary: "Abby's past and present collide when she and the missing Admiral Sullivan they're searching for turn out to have a mutual friend--the Doctor. Crossover with NCIS."
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (8th), Martha Jones, Abby Sciuto, Gibbs, Tony DiNozzo, Ziva David, Tim McGee, Ducky, Director Shepard, Original Characters
Warnings: Spoilers: Doctor Who - Robot through Terror of the Zygons, 1996 Movie, and Season 3 through Blink. NCIS - through 5x14.

Recced because: This is story is just plain fun to read. Azar writes Harry, Ten, Eight, Martha and the entire cast of NCIS brilliantly. The plot is fast-paced, clever, and features some cool aliens. Each time I read this story, it makes me smile. (And if you're not familiar with NCIS, don't worry -- you'll still enjoy it!)

Story: Five Things Owen Harper Remembers and One Thing He'll Never Forget
Author: scarlettgirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 611
Author's Summary: "Memories are like acid and some deserve to burn."
Characters/Pairings: Owen Harper
Warnings: Season 1 of Torchwood, swearing, angst, and if you're squicked by the thought of needles, you might want to look away from Chapter 2.

Recced because: We all have our favorite characters and our less-than-favorite characters. To be honest, Owen Harper has never been a favorite of mine. However, I think it's a sign of truly great writing when an author can take a less-than-favorite character and make you feel for them. Each of the six drabbles in this series draws you in, makes you see the world from Owen's perspective, and is like a punch to the gut. Scarlettgirl's masterful use of the drabble format and deftness for writing Owen makes this a piece not to be missed.

Story: Friends of a Friend
Author: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1796
Author's Summary: "AU: Josh Townsend and Natalie Redfern deal with tragedy. Spoilers for the DW episode Turn Left."
Characters/Pairings: Josh Townsend, Natalie Redfern, Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Clyde Langer
Warnings: Spoilers for Turn Left.

Recced because: In Friends of a Friend, MinervaFan takes the AU "right turn" scenario and uses it as an opportunity to explore Josh Townsend, Sarah Jane Smith, and the very-Sarah-Jane-theme of picking up the pieces when one's world has changed. The result is a unique and seamless melding of the Sarah Jane Adventures and the Sarah Jane Smith Audio Stories, with excellent characterizations throughout.

Hello! I'm stellastars and this week I'll be pointing you in the direction of just a few of the fics I have enjoyed at Teaspoon. There will mostly be a mix of Classic Who, New Who, and Torchwood, but with a hint of Sarah Jane Adventures, Big Finish, and maybe even a crossover. I thought we'd kick off the week by starting at the very beginning, with a gen adventure featuring One.

Story: The Benefits of Being Monochromatic
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 19,646
Author's Summary: "One and Ian set out to explore, and of course the girls must follow - but where do they go from there? And does it matter how you're dressed?"
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Simply put, this fic feels like it should have been an episode during the 1963-64 season. The characterizations are spot-on, especially in the dialogue and the interactions between characters. (Plus, there is a lovely bit of Barbara/Ian shippiness!) The plot is well-developed, well-written, and captivating. Even the pacing of the story feels like a classic serial: when the action breaks at a chapter's end, you half expect the title of next week's adventure to appear and the episode's credits to roll. The only significant difference between the classic show and this fic, is that Primsong has the opportunity to write "in color" and uses it to brilliant effect. Whether you're a fan of the original team TARDIS or more partial to New Who, the skill with which this story was crafted makes it an absolute pleasure to read.
