Story: Closed
Author: A_Who_in_Whoville
Rating: Adult
Word Count:103773
Author's Summary: The breach between universes is permanently closed. After a horrific accident, Rose Tyler decides to re-create herself. Broadchurch is as good a place as any to start afresh. Crossover with Broadchurch.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Jake Simmonds, 10th Doctor/DI Alex Hardy, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler
Warnings: Explicit sex, and a canon character death early on.

Recced because: Since the first series of the show has finished, there have been a lot more Doctor Who/Broadchurch crossover fics popping up. Closed is one of the first, and IMHO, one of the best as well. It's not a reunion fic though, and the 10th Doctor only ever appears in Rose's dreams and memories. Rather, she finds solace in a world where she and the Doctor never reunite in a man who shares his face: DI Alec Hardy. It's a really well done story, and you'll be rooting for Rose and Alec the whole time, so you won't get a chance to be disappointed that there is no actual 10 in it. Plus, we get lots of Jake Simmonds, who is an awesome and underused character. I read this fic as it was being updated, and was on tenterhooks waiting for her to update chapters. You're lucky enough to get it all in one shot! Enjoy. :)

Story: Dead Things
Author: rosa_acicularis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2381
Author's Summary: Rose always did have a thing for dangerous older men. A Pete's World crack!fic.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, the Tenth Doctor, the Duplicate Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love a good crack!fic, and this one is especially noteworthy because its humor isn't silly, it's deadpan -- a trick that I didn't realize could even be pulled off in a fic, let alone pulled off as well as it is done here. Rose Tyler becomes a vampire between "Doomsday" and "Journey's End," and if that's not cracky enough for you, plenty of vampire tropes get skewered here, too. (Did I mention that I also love fics that skewer tropes?)

Story: A Complicated Journey http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=41648

Author: Aldanon http://www.whofic.com/viewuser.php?uid=14026

Word Count: 83,507 words

Rating: Teen

Author's Summary: After being left at Bad Wolf Bay, Rose and the Human Doctor drive back to London together, growing closer and finding adventure along the way.

Recced Because: If you've read my scribblings on the Teaspoon, you know what I have been writing. This one was one of the first post JE fics I ever read, also one of the best, and the only one that's not been Recced yet. It's a longer one, but that should make up for missing a couple days.

Characters: Jake Simmonds, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, and the Tenth Doctor Duplicate.

Hey folks,
Many apologies for the late start to my reccing week; my brain has been occupied for the last few days with trying to wheedle a historic Scottish property into exhibiting a cake the size of a tennis table in its Great Hall....This may or may not tell you something about my taste in fic. At any rate, let the reccage commence :-)

Story: Here There Be
Author:Cryptile
Rating:General (some swearing)
Word Count:32,036
Author's Summary: Rose Tyler battles Prehistoric Beasts, Torquay housewives and her new therapist.
Characters/Pairings:Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake, Pete Tyler, Jackie Tyler, OMC
Warnings:N/A
Recced because:This is one of the first fics I read when I was discovering Doctor Who, and in a lot of ways, it's still my benchmark as far as good fic is concerned. It's set in Pete's World after the events of 'Doomsday', and is both a terrifically well-written character piece that makes me thoroughly identify with Rose in a way that the show never quite managed to do, and is also a rollicking good tale to boot. The pacing is lively and built around a deadpan sense of humor and all of the characters are given unexpected, truthful, tender, plausible moments which really build on how Season Two left them. The original characters are just that and the dialogue fizzes throughout. And there's dinosaurs. Come on, guys, dinosaurs. Who doesn't love a T-Rex?

Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] stellastars and I'm excited to be reccing here at [livejournal.com profile] calufrax again this week. I'll be sharing some of the stories that have caught my attention, including a mixture of Classic and New Who, Torchwood, and SJA. To get us started this week, here's a bit of humor to brighten your Monday!

Story: Possibilities, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bananas
Author: rosa_acicularis / [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 13,660
Author's Summary: Rose Tyler lives the life fantastic, her feet on the ground and her head in the stars. A Pete's World fic. With bananas.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Jake Simmonds, Mickey Smith, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, OC, The Doctor (10th), Rose/Ten, Jake/Mickey
Warnings: None
Note: Though finished recently, this fic was begun before Series 4 aired. It contains spoilers and canon only through The Runaway Bride.

Recced because: This fic is LOL-funny and laughter makes the start of any week better. The premise of the story is hilarious, there's a fun Jake/Mickey subplot, and Rose's younger brother (author-created and named "Reggie") adds humor that only an eight-year old could bring. Plus, with phrases like The mysterious bananary continued the language itself will put smiles on faces. (Just try saying the word "bananary" and see if it doesn't make you grin!) But this story is more than laughs, too. As the tale progresses and the culprit behind the bananary revealed, the reader sees a Rose who has matured as an individual: she's built a life for herself without the Doctor and has a firm sense of her place in Pete's world. This well-developed characterization gives the story substance and (combined with the humor) makes for an incredibly satisfying read. I hope it will brighten your day as much as it did mine!

Story: Romantic (With a Lowercase R)
Author: thirty2flavors
Rating: Author says Teen, but I'd say All Ages (PG, but not PG-13 if you're familiar with those ratings)
Word Count: 3079
Author's Summary: Besides, Rose was quite certain if there’d ever been a human celebration crafted to make the Doctor uncomfortable, it was probably Valentine’s Day. Rose held no delusions about him being the sort to enjoy candlelit dinners or long talks about feelings – he was, after all, still the man who’d said “quite right too”.
Characters/Pairings: The Duplicate Tenth Doctor/Rose Tyler, Donna Noble (Pete's World version), Jake Simmonds
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Duplicate Tenth Doctor is a fascinating character, and there are many excellent fics out there that explore how he deals with learning to live as a human. Some of them are moving, some of them are thought-provoking, and some of them, like this one, are just plain fun. The author quickly and deftly establishes a scenario where the Doctor is in a stable relationship with Rose and best friends with alt!Donna, then sets up the premise: it's Valentine's Day. The Doctor is, of course, clueless. What follows is perfectly in character all the way around -- Donna in particular is wonderful -- and it's an absolute joy to read. The learning-to-be-human Doctor and Valentine's Day? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Story: Ricky Smith
Author: rallalon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,638
Author's Summary: It's not far off, not really. It's just a name, after all. It's just a name that's not his.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, Jake/Mickey
Warnings: Sexual situations and swearing

Recced because: This is one of my all-time favorite stories of "Whatever Happened To Mickey Smith?" The author utilizes all the things people generally take for granted about their identity, even as simple as carving one's name into the side of a post, creating a wonderfully twisted situation for Mickey. I love the characterization of him in this as well, it feels right without feeling repetitive.

Story: From Monte Carlo, With Love
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2254
Author's Summary: The quest is the quest. Throw in a couple of pirate hats, and stir.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schoffield, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, Ace/Hex, Rose/Mickey/Jake, there's some other mixes as well, like a bit of Rose/Ace.
Warnings: None

Recced because: I ALMOST feel bad reccing something of [livejournal.com profile] livii's because her stuff is so uniformly good it speaks for itself but this one is just so much fun. I love the glimpse into what Rose and Mickey and Jake got up to and what they were like together in the alt!verse. I love the similarities drawn between Rose/Mickey/Jake and Ace/Hex because to me at least, Ace and Rose are quite similar, as are their relationships with the men in the fic and that really works well, I think. They're just a really good pairing and threesome to throw together, they've got a lot in common and they snark so well. To top it all of, they're thrown together in a very fun, caper-ish type adventure thing with silly costumes! Don't be put off if you haven't met Hex before, [livejournal.com profile] livii has his voice and his relationship with Ace down really well so you could arguably use this fic to work out whether you might like him or not!

Story: They Came to Norway to Eat Our Brains
Author: Doyle @ Teaspoon / [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 @ LJ
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5,266
Author's Summary: Post-Doomsday. The Torchwood base at Darlig ulv Stranden has a problem with zombies. Well, one zombie (suspected). And when the pictures come through in London, Rose is shocked to realise who it is.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler/Jack Harkness, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds
Warnings: None given - Should I give a non-warning for no actual zombies appearing in this fic?

Recced because: So, that one (suspected) zombie? Was dead when they found him, dead when he was brought to the morgue, got up and walked around, charmed a nurse into bringing him his coat, and--“What the hell’s he doing on the roof?” I literally laughed out loud at this fic's sparkling, snappy dialogue:

Sorry about the earlier, peek-a-boo duplicate rec. Great minds? I've now double-checked my rec list and it's clean. I was determined to post a "happy" fic today so, onto to the Monday fun!

Story: from up here you can barely see the ground
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,248
Charcters/Pairings: Rose, Mickey, Jake, Alt!UNIT
Author's Summary: Making it in the new world, with extensive documentary and military backup

recced because: I absolutely adore Alt!World Rose-Mickey-Jake buddy fics (eta: punctuation changed to save [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's sanity) and this is one of the best of the lot. The dynamic between the three characters is amusing, irreverent and filled with caring and admiration, when they're not teasing each other without mercy, that is. A fic where Rose is happy, living a full life and having adventures of her own is a rare thing, Mickey and Jake are the icing on the cake. This is joyful fic with a slightly cracky twist that only adds to the sense fun.

Series: The Way of Things
Author: shrak
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 193637 for the first story in the series, 2500-11000 words for the remaining stories
Author's Summary: A post-Doomsday story, set in the Alt!Verse. It's been over three years since Rose and the Doctor said goodbye. What happens when she not only meets his doppelganger, but has to work with him? A Blackpool/Doctor Who crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler, Pete Tyler, Jake Simmonds, Peter Carlisle, DC Penington, OC's
Warnings: Graphic sex, violence

Recced because: This entire series is just completely, utterly epic and enthralling. I like the idea of Rose getting on with her life, and then getting hit upside the head by the fact that just because there's no Doctor in her new universe, that doesn't mean there isn't someone eerily like him, and all of the drama such a discovery could cause. Add in a compelling Torchwood-style murder mystery, and some extremely well-written OC's (I haven't seen Blackpool yet, but I really want to after reading this), and it's hard not to be sucked in to this AU. The length of the stories can be a bit daunting, but it's worth the time involved in the read.
