Story: What I Must Look Like to You
Author: stoplookingup
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 821
Charcters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones
Author's Summary: Set immediately after Family of Blood. What happened after the Tardis dematerialized.
Recced because: There are dozens of post-Human Nature/Family of Blood fics. You've got your stories covering what happens to Joan after and what happens to the Doctor and Martha post-Family of Blood. This story is both like and unlike all of these stories. Because in this story, we get to see an aspect of the Doctor that some of us, Martha included, seem to forget. There's a reason why he keeps humans as companions, and why every one of his companions are brilliant. This is why Martha Jones is amongst those brilliant few. And the end of this story is one that will stay with you for a while.
“He doesn’t even look at me, but I don’t care.”
“What?” Martha froze.
“That’s what you said,” the Doctor replied, looking up at her. “He doesn’t even look at me, but I don’t care.”
“No!” Her eyes widened in alarm, and then she giggled nervously. “Told you — I would have said anything…”
“No you wouldn’t. You could have just grabbed the watch and opened it yourself, but you didn’t. You wanted it to be his choice. My choice. So you talked to him.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t mean…”
“I’m not John Smith.”
“I know that! I never said…” She stopped, confused now.
The Doctor stood and took a step toward her. She stood her ground.
“John Smith had to ask Martha Jones what she does for the Doctor. I don’t have to ask. I know.”
