amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho_OneandSusan)
[personal profile] amaresu
Story: Fade and Flower
Author: Agapi42
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2343
Author's Summary: “To live in this world, you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.”
Characters/Pairings: Susan/David, Barbara/Ian, First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: I wanted to have a happy Susan ending, even if it starts at the beginning with a crash landing in a junk yard. This does have a bit of a fractured style to it, but I feel like that adds to the story. This is an interesting look at Susan as she lives her life and deals with some of the consequences of other people messing with time.

Story:What Not to Miss While Traveling in France
Author: MinervaFan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 478
Author's Summary: Four drabbles set during the First Doctor episode, The Reign of Terror.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Susan, Barbara, Ian
Warnings: Spoilers for The Reign of Terror obviously.

Recced because: Four looks at our intrepid heroes during a rather trying time in their journeys. It's an interesting look at how the four of them dealt with the situation and provides a bit of insight into how they'd learned to cope.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho_susan)

Story: Rebuilding
Author: DZ Crasher
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 464
Author's Summary: Susan's on earth, rebuilding her collection.
Characters/Pairings: Susan/OFC, Susan/OMC, Susan/OFC/OMC
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a more depressing look at what Susan's life might have been like then we normally get. At the same time Rebuilding gives Susan a sense of hope and perhaps purpose.

Missed my first day here. Sorry. The rest of the week should go smoother.

Story: Blue Moon
Author: Primsong
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 924
Author's Summary: Ian doesn't dance. Or does he? An interlude among alien foliage and moonlight.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara/Ian, with Vicki cameo
Warnings: Fluff

Recced because: It's a sweet little moment in time for Ian and Barbara. A quite walk with an unexpected alien encounter leads to adorable fluffiness from Ian. Fun interlude that makes me smile.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho-melsmilesun)
[personal profile] amaresu
Story: Den of Thieves
Author: livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 897
Author's Summary: "You've gone for ages, you've already gone, you're still here, just arrived, haven't even met you yet. It all depends on who you are and how you look at it. Strange business, time."
Characters/Pairings: Mel/Ace/Seventh Doctor
Warnings:

Recced because: Space Pirate Mel is a favorite trope of Mel fans. Here livii presents a bit of a darker look at this trope. The Mel presented is still Mel, but she's a bit darker, a bit less carefree. This is a lovely character story of how Mel might have turned out.

Story: In reason, how like a God
Author: jedi_penguin
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 373
Author's Summary: She upsets his reason. The Doctor should mind more than he does.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Charley
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a lovely look into the Sixth Doctor's mind when it comes to Charley. All the reasons he doesn't trust her and all the reasons he likes her. It's short, but very sweet, and more than a bit sad.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho-six)

Story: Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2090
Author's Summary: Committing suicide was a real challenge if you were a Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Valeyard
Warnings: None, unless general Valeyardiness counts.

Recced because: The Valeyard is such an interesting figure. Everything we do know about him comes from completely unreliable sources. This lets people try out new idea for him and play with how the Valeyard came about. Elliptic Eye does an utterly fabulous job of showing how the Doctor became the Valeyard.

Story: Aim for the Unknown
Author: hafital
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4548
Author's Summary: "What is this? What story are we in?"
"I don't know," says Jenny. "Isn't it wonderful?"
Characters/Pairings: Jenny/River Song
Warnings: If you know who Jenny and River are then you don't need no warnings.

Recced because: Because it's such an unusual pairing that works wonderfully. Because it's fun to see the adventures that River goes on now. Because seeing Jenny diving into things head first is fun. Because this is a fun romp from start to finish. Because there's a bit of angst thrown in, but it has a happy ending. In short this story is just fun.

Story: From a World More Full of Weeping
Author: Azar
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3056
Author's Summary: Two people meet who have nothing in common except a world of loss. Crossover with The Chronicles of Narnia.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Susan Pevensie
Warnings: If you don't know about how The Last Battle goes, then there could be some spoiler issues.

Recced because: Susan is perhaps the most tragic figure in all of the Chronicles of Narnia. A lot of people find her ending to be unfair in some form or another. Azar keeps her ending, but gives her a chance at a new beginning. The set-up and the banter between Susan and Ten is brilliant and just spot on. Like all good crossovers it gives the feeling that not only could this have happened, it maybe did.

Story:A Meeting of the Minds
Author: partofthequeue2
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 730
Author's Summary: The first time you meet Luke Smith is not the first time you meet Luke Smith.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor and Luke Smith
Warnings: Year That Never Was

Recced because: I like fic that deals with the other consequences of the YTNW. How did it change the way other events happened? This fic deals with what could have happened to Luke if the Master had taken over when the Bane were still setting up. It's a darker fic, like a lot of YTNW stuff, but it has a happy ending.

Story: Smoking and Foxholes Can Be Dangerous to Your Health
Author: aces
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2666
Author's Summary: “Why does the Doctor always have to land us in these sorts of situations anyway?”
Characters/Pairings: Hex, Fitz, The Eighth Doctor and a side of The Seventh Doctor and Ace.
Warnings: Fitz ends up in hospital?

Recced because: Companions meeting each other is always fun. Companions meeting each other in foxholes is even better. Also Hex gets to be Nurse Hex and is utterly fabulous at it. The dynamics between Hex and Fitz are fun. They banter, call each other names, and even have a wee slashy undertone.

I'm rounding off my Big Finish week with a rec for Mel and one for Peri. Big Finish may not have created them, but they've done some rather wonderful things with them.

Story:A Trump Lead
Author: Sheila Adamson
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2787
Author's Summary: The Doctor treats Mel to a lesson in probabilities and card play.
Characters/Pairings: Mel, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: please None

Recced because: This shows the way in which Mel and Seven interacted together wonderfully. The story starts off with Mel angry at the Doctor, for a number of things, but mainly because people died and he wouldn't go back and save them. Through explaining the game of Bridge to her Seven explains about changing the past. It's a beautifully written allegory.

Story: The Sky Was Good For Flying
Author: Doyle
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1883
Author's Summary: The Doctor trespasses on a royal garden and meets someone he didn’t expect to ever see again.
Characters/Pairings: Peri, Sixth Doctor
Warnings: Just for how Peri left the Doctor

Recced because: TV canon leaves what happens to Peri up in the air. There are two conflicting stories, both from unreliable sources. Doyle makes a future for Peri that is wonderful and exactly what she deserves. Also the Sixth Doctor gets resolution in the matter as well.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho-charley)
[personal profile] amaresu
This is a two story day because the first one is rather sad so I wanted to follow up with something light and fluffy.

Story: No More I Love Yous
Author: Suzanne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1677
Author's Summary: Sometimes you have to make the most difficult decisions.
Characters/Pairings: Charley/Eight
Warnings: Takes place immediately after Absolution.

Recced because: She captures Charley perfectly in this moment. She shows how hurt Charley feels as well as the sense of betrayal. Suzanne also shows why Eight acted like he did at the end. It wasn't because he didn't care, but he cared too much. This story manages to capture both of them perfectly in this rather horrible moment in time.

Story: Butterfly Kisses
Author: Nineveh
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 298
Author's Summary: Charley, Eight, and the butterfly room.
Characters/Pairings: Charley, Eight
Warnings: Fluff, do I need to warn for fluff?

Recced because: This is a short and very sweet look into Charley's thoughts about the Doctor.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho-acenhex)

Story: Can't All Be Wedding Cake
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 928
Author's Summary: Getting up the nerve to pop the question to Ace requires a man to be made of stern stuff.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Hex
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's spot on Hex. From his awkwardness to the planning out how to propose to the ways in which things go wrong.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho-evelyn)

As the icon indicates this will be the Evelyn rec for the week. I have already rec'd jedi_penguin this week, but it was unavoidable. That is a subtle hint that people need to write more Big Finish related fics.

Story: A Delightful Species
Author: jedi_penguin
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 623
Author's Summary: She would have said that she was too old for emotional rollercoasters, but she's been known to be mistaken before.
Characters/Pairings: Evelyn/Sixth Doctor
Warnings: Spoilers for Assassins in the Limelight

Recced because: This is a wonderful look at Evelyn's thoughts during the last few scenes of the audio. It has the same narrative feel as the audio which makes it click all the more as a tag to Assassins in the Limelight.

Story: A Time for Change
Author: Paranoid Seat
Rating:All ages
Word Count: 2031
Author's Summary: One of the greatest art galleries in the galaxy, a Time Lord who maintains it by routinely breaking the Laws of Time, a woman who was once Pharaoh, and a job offer.
Characters/Pairings: Erimem, Braxiatel
Warnings: Since this has been Jossed since it was first written.
Recced because: This is a lovely What If? fic for what could've happened to Erimem after leaving the Doctor and Peri. It feels spot on as to how Erimem would have reacted to the situation. Braxiatel is spot on (from the little I've heard of him) and overall it's a very enjoyable fic.

Story: Extraordinary
Author: scarlettgirl
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1067
Author's Summary: Lucie Miller, for just a moment, wishes she had been that girl.
Characters/Pairings: Lucie Miller, Eighth Doctor
Warnings: Takes place immediately after Human Resources

Recced because: This is a wonderful tag to Human Resources. Scarlettgirl shows the friendship between Lucie and the Doctor in a way that seemed to be missing from Human Resources itself. This feels like it could have been at the end of HR and is a very satisfying conclusion to that story arc.
amaresu: Sapphire and Steel from the opening (doctorwho-bigfinishlogo)

This week I will be spreading the Big Finish love. I'm going to rec stories for a different Big Finish companion each day.

Story: Chameleon
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jedi_penguin
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 360
Author's Summary:
Good and Evil can’t hide from C’rizz. He takes them in and makes them his own. He knows Good because he knows Charley.
Characters/Pairings: C'rizz/Charley
Warnings: Just for C'rizz in general.

Recced because: It's says C'rizz/Charley and it is, but it's more than that. This is a wonderful character study of C'rizz as well. C'rizz is an often forgotten Companion and [livejournal.com profile] jedi_penguin shows the many facets of C'rizz in a few short words. It's brilliant.
