Hello, [livejournal.com profile] calufrax! For once I'm here in my capacity as reccer, not as the mod, so expect recs from me for the next two weeks. (Although as always, if you'd like to rec – and everyone is welcome to do so! – leave a comment in the signup post or send me an ask on Tumblr.)

Story: A Few Things and a Lizard
Author: Beer Good
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2,820
Author's Summary: When Clara doesn't join him after the events of "Deep Breath" the Doctor picks up another companion. A big, sexy woman with legs up to here, a tail that won't quit, and big, nasty, pointy teeth. Yes, the Doctor is joined by a T Rex in the fix-it fic to end all fix-it fics.
Characters/Pairings: Adric, Clara, Danny, Harriet Jones, Ianto, Jack, Martha, Rory, Sarah Jane, Wilf, Twelfth Doctor, Simm!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Doctor has had many companions over the years, but never, to the best of my knowledge, a T. rex, much less the one from "Deep Breath." And let's just say it's remarkable how differently certain situations might have played out had a gigantic carnivore been brought into the mix. (Davros never stood a chance.) Best of all – and unlike a number of companions – our dinosaur friend finally gets a happy ending, and a fate she earned far more than what really happened to her in her one onscreen episode.

Story: It's Such a Feeling
Author: stoprobbers
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,592
Author's Summary: Oh, now I’ll tell you something I think you’ll understand.
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones, Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: n/a
Recced because: My first Doctor was the Ninth Doctor, and so when he regenerated and the Tenth Doctor took over, I sympathized with Rose's hesitance in the The Christmas Invasion. I was not sure I was ready for this interloper. He seemed so different, and I wasn't convinced he would be as good as Nine had been. By the end of the episode, however, I, like Rose, had been won over. This is a story filling in the Doctor's story in The Christmas Invasion, and it's both about the Doctor himself and the kind of man he is and how Rose comes to see that he is still the same man. In a change from The Christmas Invasion, however, this is entirely from the Doctor's perspective rather than from Rose's. The author here captures the Doctor's cadence just right, in what I might describe as poetic rambling.

Hello all! This is my first time reccing, like, ever, and I am so excited to share some really excellent stories with all of you! My two ships are Ten/Donna and Doctor/River, but I enjoy anything that's really well written. Fics I enjoy are often of a happier or more emotional persuasion, often containing many giggles and fun banter.
This first fic I'm reccing is by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] starjargon, for whom I am honored to beta and who kindly returns the favor. I think you'll all really like it.

Story: May The Best Woman Win
Author: Starjargon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2948
Author's Summary: Martha and Rose both care deeply for the same man. So of course, the only logical thing to do is fight for him. With jousting poles. AU, obviously.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Canton Everett Delaware III, Donna Noble, Harriet Jones, Harriet Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Lynda Moss, Martha Jones, River Song, River Song, Rory Williams, Rose Tyler, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a very fun, enjoyable fic that has pretty much every nuWho companion out there, as well as three different Doctors. Incredibly well written, with a strong, even representation of opposing characters, and some fantastic plot twists. It's one of my favorites that she's written, because she handles the complexity of dealing with so many different characters and emotions all at once in such a masterful and brilliant way.

Story: The Watchmaker
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lizbee
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 19,748
Author's Summary: None
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones, Liz Shaw, Mickey Smith, Romana II, Rose Tyler, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Romana survives the Time War - one of my favourite tropes - and settles down on Earth. This is a lovely meaty story thats wonderfully paced.

Story: Knights Errant
Author: JJPOR
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6325
Author's Summary: "So, what did happen to Brigadier Winifred Bambera and her other half Ancelyn? What happened to Bessie, for that matter? And how did UNIT become NuNIT? It's all connected, of course..."
Characters/Pairings: Ancelyn/Bambera, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Harriet Jones, Other Characters, Torchwood, UNIT, Bessie [she is too a character ;-)]
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Well... it's The One Where Bambera And Ancelyn Run Away In Bessie To Fight Dragons. *nods* That really ought to be a good recommendation by itself.

Let me elaborate. Brigadier Winifred Bambera - a tough, snarky black lady with incredibly butch hair - was the head of UNIT in the late 1980s, after Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart retired. In the Seventh Doctor story "Battlefield", she worked with Seven, Ace, and the Brig (ther Brig I should say *g*) to repel an invasion by Morgan leFay from an Arthurian alternate dimension. Also involved was an adorably dorky guy named Ancelyn, from the same alternate dimension, fighting on the Doctor's side; Ancelyn and "Brigadette" Bambera started up a wonderful scrappy romance.

This story is set ten years later, when Proper!UNIT is being broken up to make way for New!UNIT. It has... well. I think I'm actually going to do a snippet.

This is a snippet )

Also it has Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. And Bessie, Three's little yellow car (which last appeared in "Battlefield"). And Excalibur. And... well, c'mon, it's hilarious. And it's by [livejournal.com profile] jjpor. Why would you NOT read it? ;-)

Let's end the week with an epic crossover!

Story: Rebuilding a Life
Author: Settiai
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 40641
Author's Summary: Near the end of the Time War, Fitz Kreiner finds himself stranded on Earth in an unfamiliar time and place. His life moves on, whether he wants it to or not. (Crossover with "NCIS.")
Characters/Pairings: Anji Kapoor, Compassion, Donna Noble, Fitz Kreiner, Harriet Jones, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, Samantha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Jacobi). Fitz / Tony.
Warnings: None
Recced because: I've gradually moved from ignoring NCIS to becoming a fan, and this is an excellent NCIS crossover (with several other secondary crossovers brought in, as far as I can tell, for the sheer fun of it) spanning several years which for once doesn't tell everyone everybody's secrets in the first five minutes of the story, and stars an amazing number of doctors and companions. I was very surprised to find that it has never been recced here, because it turns up on NCIS rec lists fairly often, but delighted to have this opportunity to introduce it to a wider audience.

You don't need much knowledge of the NCIS characters, they're described as they appear in the story, and the viewpoint is always Fitz, initially as an outsider gradually meeting and getting to know them. In some ways a little ignorance of the show helps, because some of the canon NCIS events have more impact!

And that concludes my week of recs - greatly looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Story: Noble Pursuits
Author: Quean of Swords
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 52k
Author's Summary: In an alternate universe, alternate Donna Noble is a PA at H.C. Clements. Then, one day, her boss tries to feed her to his alien insect offspring. Lucky for her, she is rescued by Rose Tyler of the Insanely Rich Tylers and a mysterious man who calls himself 'the Doctor'... two people who seem to be a bit more familiar with her than they should be. The Doctor, Rose, and the team at Torchwood Alpha (a.k.a. The Warehouse) have to stop an insidious alien invasion before they've even had a chance to settle into their new lives. Will Donna have to chose between helping them or protecting her ailing grandfather?
Characters/Pairings: Alt!Ten/Rose Tyler, Alt!Donna Noble, Alt!Harriet Jones, Alt!Ianto Jones, Alt!Jackie Tyler, Alt!Martha Jones, Alt!Owen Harper, Alt!Pete Tyler, Alt!Toshiko Sato, Alt!Wilfred Mott
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This was one of this year's [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang fics, and it. is. marvelous. Among the many things to look forward to: excellent writing, the human Doctor's slow adjustment to his new circumstances, and Donna being, well, Donna. Plus a most entertaining "aliens invading!" plot.

Story: Ghostmeat
Author: Cathica
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 2,612
Author's summary: A chronic meddler should always consider the worst-case scenario.
Characters/pairings: The Doctor (Tenth), Rose Tyler, Harriet Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: The world can always use one more fic that plays with a bifurcation point in canon's timeline, or explores what being a time-sensitive might mean for the Doctor. This one does both.

In this particular worst-case scenario, Cathica traces out all the ramifications a slight shift in the events of The Christmas Invasion might have for the characters and their interactions. The picture ends up looking very, very different from the one we saw onscreen, but every step Ghostmeat takes to get there feels logical, inevitable. Rose and Harriet are particularly compelling here in the new, too-sharp triangle that unfolds between them and the Doctor when Ten does something—a small thing, comparatively—that makes good sense, coming from a man who's always liked to think that there should have been another way.

All my recs this week will be Martha centric.

Story: Electric Avenue
Author: Bobsyeruncle
Rating: All Ages - Swearing - Character Study, Het
Word Count: 28009
Author's Summary: “You never talk about her…” Rose’s comment about Ten’s and Martha Jones’ travels triggers strong emotions as the Human “Doctor” reflects navigating the complexities of personal and social relationships and Ska beat of Brixton in 1969, and his third incarnation and the companion who left him for a man named Jones.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Clive Jones, Harriet Jones, Jackie Tyler, Leo Jones, Martha Jones, Original Companion, Original Companion, Original Companion, Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This is my favorite 1969 fic. I love how Bob addresses the racial realities of 1969 and how she made the Old Who characters really interesting for this New Who fan. FYI, there is a sequel, but it's still a WIP finished now. It's called To Be A Queen In Bondage.

Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] such_heights and this is my first go-round on Calufrax, so I'll be taking you through a mixed bag of some of my favourite stories that haven't made it into the archives thus far.

Story: Enough of Words
Author: Maymargaret
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1847
Author's Summary: What happens after we leave Harriet Jones in "The Stolen Earth".
Characters: Harriet Jones, Ace
Warnings: None

Recced because: Say what you like about the last season finale, it had an amazing number of jumping off points for more stories to tell. Maymargaret picks up on both the subwave network and Harriet Jones' indeterminate fate (is my tinhat still in place? oh good) and finds a perfect opening to introduce Ace, whose presence does of course improve any story. It's wonderfully characterised, an excellent snapshot of the situation on Earth during the invasion, and most of all a great idea neatly packaged.

Story: All the Good Songs
Author: Petra LaMaitre
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2726
Author's Summary: Harriet Jones had completed the third notebook worth of her autobiography when the knock came on the door.
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love Harriet Jones, I love Sarah Jane, I love Year That Never Was stories, and I love femslash. How could I possibly ask for more? The author does a wonderful job with their voices and makes the pairing believable. I'm quite a fan of this one.

Story: Echoes
Author: agapi42
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: It slips away, hides in the cold and the white and the dark. (Spoilers for 'The Stolen Earth'.)
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones/Rose Tyler
Warnings: none
Word Count: 633

Recced because: This is just absolutely gorgeous: a possible snippet of time post-The Stolen Earth, frozen in an afterlife that may or may not be real. Harriet is beautifully drawn, and the story crackles with vivid description while also maintaining a dreamy, gauzy feel. For such a small bite of a story it's incredibly satisfying, and the last two lines are just dynamite.
[identity profile] elliptic-eye.livejournal.com
Story: Alias Smith and Jones
Author: kbk
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,763
Author's Summary: Sarah Jane meets the Prime Minister.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/Harriet Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: This does something much better than just setting up a convincing romance: It sets up a convincing friendship. As soon as kbk gets these two women in a room together, we can just feel that these are people who can get past roles and titles and know each other. There's that little frisson that seems to come out naturally from not glossing either character's strong will, there's K-9, there's the complicated spectre of the Doctor in the background, there's dashes of humor, and there's the warmth of comfort and familiarity between two adults out to save the world. There's just no bad here.

Definitely my feel-good rec, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Maybe I have a bit of a thing for good fluff after all.

Story: Terms of Employment
Author: Aeshna
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 7098
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Harriet Jones
Author's Summary:"We'll survive. History's not done with you yet, and me... well, I always have before. Don't see why this time should be any different." Written some months before the Torchwood s1 premiere.

recced because: I do love origin stories, especially origin stories for how Jack ends up at Torchwood. Now this one is completely in AU-land thanks to Frangments, but what an AU it is. It's got a perfect Jack characterisation, perfect Harriet Jones and a lot of hard truths being examined between them both. Neither are perfect characters, but neither is the Doctor who brought them both to this point. It's a lovely examination of what could have been.

Story: Sic Semper Tyrannis
Author: Meredith
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Where was Harriet Jones, in the Year that Never Happened? "Trying to incite a rebellion, of course; it's the only sensible thing to do under the circumstances."
Characters/Pairings: Harriet Jones, The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: none
Word Count: 3327

Recced because: I never felt the Doctor did right by Harriet Jones in "The Christmas Invasion", and no story states the reasons why more articulately than this one. This is former PM Jones, finally stating her case and getting a bit of her own back, both in the Year That Never Was and after the reset. As Meredith writes her, it's easy to believe that this woman was supposed to lead Britain's Golden Age.
[identity profile] livii.livejournal.com
Story: My nest of mercies
Author: lcsbanana
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: "You've heard that nonsense about stepping on a butterfly?"
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Harriet Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is an utterly lovely story, and a terrific pairing. Harriet Jones is a great character, and she’s wonderfully written here, older and (somewhat) wiser after her downfall at the hands of the Doctor, as she finds Ace lurking in her garden, squashing her zinnias. Ace is post-Doctor, travelling and stalking women who give off odd time readings. The storyline is clever and interesting, thoughtful about time travel, possibilities, and hope, and ends with this beautiful imagery of Ace both watching over or protecting Harriet, and needing her just as fiercely. "You'll come through. I can tell that about you, you're the sort of person who always comes through,” Ace says, and oh, the story makes you believe it, for both of them.

(Edit: I swear I didn't look at the comm before posting this - I guess we were all in an Ace mood!)
