Story: Tell Me About Your Mother (The Slightly Freudian Remix)
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1516
Author's Summary: A defining moment wherein a true friend helps the young Theta Sigma look deep within himself and understand the ways in which he is a wanker.
Characters/Pairings: Theta (pre-series Doctor), Delgado!Master, arguably Doctor/Master

Recced because: Elliptic Eye has written some very funny things - this is one of them. If you like jokes about the Doctor's teenage angst and bad poetry and/or jokes about the Master being a loser, you've come the right place (although, to be fair to Delgado, he comes off by far the better of the two in this). I also think the choice to turn a supposed therapy session on Gallifrey into a comedy skit was inspired - and, on that note, I think this is a very clever remix. The original is about a totally different character (although no names are given, so it's a fair cop swap) mentoring the young Doctor - and is without so much piss taking. But I like the piss taking. And I'm probably going to rec a more serious one tomorrow.

Story: Be Still, My Beating Heart
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: G
Word Count: 863
Author's Summary: Judoon, hospitals on the moon, bendy straws of evil--all very well. But how did the Doctor get that double-heartbeat past all those, er, doctors?
Characters/pairings: Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
Martha is a character I like far more in fanfiction than out of it (if I am to be absolutely honest). However I do admit that there were many ways in which she was mistreated by the Doctor and by her circumstances. I like this story because though the tone is light, and even joking, it manages to convey a Doctor who is capricious and a little whimsical in his choice of Martha, putting some of the onus for her misery on him from the beginning. While also leaving room for Martha as a strong, intelligent woman.

Also: it's fun... )

Story: From the Canyons to the Stars
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: The Doctor, Leela, and two friends sampling infinity.
Characters/Pairings: Four, Leela
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~870 words

Recced because: A gorgeous little bite of a fic, with absolutely dead-on characterizations for both Four and Leela, characters who don't get nearly enough attention. This story is so evocatively written; the desert, as Four and Leela experience it, comes alive, and is a third character in its own right. This left me feeling warm and just that bit of lost that the characters describe, all in a very good way.

Story: Ginger and Free
Author: [livejournal.com profile] elliptic_eye
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2,901
Author's Summary: A different companion is with the Doctor when he becomes human in 1913 — and, no, it isn't Rose.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Turlough, the Black Guardian, and two characters I can't mention without ruining the surprise.
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: I love this story unreservedly, and not just because I helped beta it. Written as an entry for the Cliché-Swap Ficathon, this story takes the "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" rewrite with Rose trope and applies it to Ten and Turlough.

Although Martha must surely have resented her position at Farringham more than we saw onscreen, squirrely, mercenary Turlough has far less patience for the job than Martha. He quickly takes as much control of the situation as he can, swindling the students in a gambling ring, framing the maids for his petty crimes, and even allowing the Black Guardian to tempt him again into killing the Doctor in exchange for escape from Earth. "Ginger and Free" is filled with black humor and knowing satire about the show itself, and it makes me laugh out loud every time I read it.

Story: Breeding Starlings
Author: [livejournal.com profile] elliptic_eye
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1090
Author's Summary: He might indulge in master plans, but he made a concerted effort to exorcise subtlety.
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace
Warnings: None

The author wrote this in part as a reaction to the Seventh Doctor's late years characterization, and so you may or may not agree with her own interpretation. Either way, though, this is an excellent short fic that combines an NA worthy adventure with a character study.

Anyway, Friday seems like a good day for Seven to be manipulating his little heart out as Ace tosses the explosives.

Story: Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2090
Author's Summary: Committing suicide was a real challenge if you were a Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Valeyard
Warnings: None, unless general Valeyardiness counts.

Recced because: The Valeyard is such an interesting figure. Everything we do know about him comes from completely unreliable sources. This lets people try out new idea for him and play with how the Valeyard came about. Elliptic Eye does an utterly fabulous job of showing how the Doctor became the Valeyard.

Story: Bonsai
Author: Elliptic Eye
Rating: Adult
Author's summary: One, two, three: This never happened.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor/Peri
Warnings: explicit sex
Word Count: ~2,000 words

Recced because: This is an incredible piece: just beautifully written, thoughtful, and also really, unexpectedly, hot. The Doctor here is Seven to a T, and Peri comes across as very sympathetic, very real. This story goes into such depth in so few words about the universe the Doctor and his companions inhabit: the idea of needing vs. wanting, forgetting, remembering, and creating your own history. It's twisty and imaginative, and wraps up the good and the bad all together into one amazing, if at times somewhat deliciously uncomfortable, whole. It's a fabulous piece of work.
