Story: The Lady in the Tower
Author: Aeshna
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 5576
Author's Summary: Sometimes it's not the handsome knight who wears the shining armour. It seems that everybody has to write their post-"Doomsday" piece and, er, this is mine. Written some months before the Torchwood s1 premiere.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness/Yvonne Hartman
Warnings: Adult, Explicit Sex

Recced because: If Jack Harkness had gone directly from the empty Game Station to a Torchwood One in the recent aftermath of the battle of Canary Wharf, it might have ended up like this. This fic is very funny and very hot, with one bittersweet, very human moment sneaked in when you aren't looking. Don't worry, it won't keep you from enjoying the smut. ;-)

Story: And Seven For a Secret
Author: Aeshna
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 57073
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Other Character(s)
Author's Summary: When Ben Haldane is left a cryptic note in his grandfather's will, it leads him to a story far stranger than he could ever have imagined.
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing

recced because:
At 57k words, this fic is the length of a short novel. Make time to read it; it's that good. Set in WWII, it has Jack fighting the Nazi equivalent of Torchwood. In a castle. No more need be said.

I mean, I could also say that I love fics where we see Jack from the perspective of the regular people whose lives he touches, and that this does that brilliantly. I could compliment the characterization, and the fabulous OC's. I could talk about the story structure and the dialogue, and the way that Aeshna manages to capture the feel of a WWII war movie.

But mostly, it's about Jack fighting Nazis.

Story: Scymnus
Author: Aeshna
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 583
Author's Summary: But all children are ungrateful.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, The TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: The show left room to interpret what really happened when Rose got Bad Wolfed and brought Jack back from the dead, and this fic uses that to great effect. It's short, but packs quite the emotional punch in how it shows the TARDIS as something very alien and eerie. Interesting and original; executed in a skilful and poetic way. I have not been able to get this story out of my mind since I first read it.

Story: Hearth and Home
Author: Aeshna
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1570
Author's Summary:"Typical!" Jack called after her, scrunching the flimsy bag into a small blue ball. "You only love me for my fish!" A night at home with Jack and Myfanwy.
Characters/Pairings: Jack, Myfanwy (the Torchwood Three pteranodon)
Warnings: none.

Recced because: I'm going to rec some Torchwood and Jack fics for the next few days. This is a fabulous slice of Torchwood reminiscences both good and bad. Aeshna avoids the temptation to make Torchwood a sort of waiting cell for Jack to spring out of and suddenly become an all new man in "Everything Changes"; I believe in this Jack, and in his colourful past in Cardiff. There's a sense of Jack's playfulness in both the present and in his memories and a beautiful kinship with his own pet pteranodon.

(I must admit to being curious about Jack's past with Torchwood, because it sounds like he did it all with style.)

Story: Touching Blue
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aeshna_uk (Aeshna)
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 783
Author's Summary: And, if there was even one reason to be thankful for his strange immortality, it would be that he had lived long enough to reach this moment. For Jack Harkness, the twentieth century wasn't all bad.
Characters: Jack Harkness
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a sad fact a lot of the best Torchwood authors are nowhere to be found on the Teaspoon, so hurray for [livejournal.com profile] aeshna_uk. Touching Blue is a great snapshot of Jack and historical Torchwood. It's one beautifully simple moment, and unbound in its joyousness. I really feel for Jack here as we're forced to remember just how out of time he is, but in this moment we see him claiming back one small part of everything he's lost, and it's glorious.

Story: ...And Things That Go Bump In the Night
Author: Aeshna
Wordcount: 1249
Rating: Teen
Author's Summary: Luke is curious, Sarah Jane is embarrassed, Jack is Jack.
Characters/Pairings: Luke Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness

Recced because: It's hilarious, cleverly written, surprisingly sweet on Luke's part and hideously embarrassing for Sarah Jane (and for Jack, except he's unembarrassable, apparently), and supports my theory that Jack has a giant fanboy crush on Sarah Jane. Besides, every kid has to catch his parent in flagrente delicto at some point. Luke being Luke...

...he's amusing about it. )

Story: Terms of Employment
Author: Aeshna
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 7098
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Harriet Jones
Author's Summary:"We'll survive. History's not done with you yet, and me... well, I always have before. Don't see why this time should be any different." Written some months before the Torchwood s1 premiere.

recced because: I do love origin stories, especially origin stories for how Jack ends up at Torchwood. Now this one is completely in AU-land thanks to Frangments, but what an AU it is. It's got a perfect Jack characterisation, perfect Harriet Jones and a lot of hard truths being examined between them both. Neither are perfect characters, but neither is the Doctor who brought them both to this point. It's a lovely examination of what could have been.

Story: Up Above, Down Below
Author: Aeshna ([livejournal.com profile] aeshna_uk)
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2389
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Tish Jones
Author's Summary: And to think that she had once been excited about Mr. Saxon giving her a job.

recced because: This is one of those great "Fill-In-The-Blank" fics that, as the author details in her notes, takes on the premise that by the end of his time on The Valient Jack probably knew Tish Jones far longer and far better than her sister. This fic is a little slice of that relationship. Primarily a TW writer, Aeshna writes good, solid gen fic, a rare breed indeed! It was a struggle between reccing this crossover or one of her excellent TW fics, but in the end I went with the fic with the least attention. If you enjoy reading quiet slices of life that happens in between the flash and glitter, I think you'll enjoy this.
