rainshaded: Livia from I, Claudius (Mine is an evil laugh)
[personal profile] rainshaded
Story: Möbius Trip
Author: Dune
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 915
Author's Summary: Maybe it hadn't been a good idea to stand in the middle of that circle of creepy statues, Jack mused.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: None

Recced because: Jack meets Weeping Angels. This is a fic I never knew I needed in my life until it was written for me. I love the premise alone, but Dune writes it with deft touches and little details that make it laugh-out-loud funny.

I'm sorry, fellow whovians, my son turns four tomorrow, we decided to have a party yesterday, he decided to celebrate this upcoming milestone by getting concussed (counter corner 50000001 Gabey 0). Hence the small toddler party we were planning morphed into an hours long experience at the hospital. I know I said I was going to mixed bag this week and it seems nuWho heavy to me so I will make my second rec (today's) something else, in the meantime this really IS a fantastic piece and I hope you forgive my nuWho heavy week. :(

Story: Cosmic Joke
Author: Dune
Rating:All Ages
Word Count:4127
Author's Summary:Like almost all insane ideas and almost all stories, this tale starts in a pub.
Characters/Pairings:Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: Timey-wimeyness?

Recced because: I love a great timey-wimey story and this story ABSOLUTELY fits that description as well being a beautiful and intimate look at the lines of causality spinning off into forever between Jack and the Doctor. Add to that recipe a touch of sorrow and a cup of empathy and you have the perfect tiny tale. I know it's on the short side but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying it all the same.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 712
Author's Summary:
Deep inside the Citadel, there is a lonely room, forever holding a lonely Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor
Warnings: Angst

Recced because: It's a familiar concept presented in a heart-breaking way. Lovely prose and really vivid pictures.

Story: The Glasgow Files
Author: Dune
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,190
Author's Summary: The official invitation only ran two words after giving the address and the relevant access codes: Come immediately.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Warnings: None

Recced because: After "End of Days," Ianto is summoned to Torchwood's Glasgow office, where he spends quiet days cataloguing alien artifacts and mourning Jack. He also discovers that the slightly eccentric, middle-aged man running Torchwood Two is keeping a surprising and important secret. There's some great Ianto introspection here, and equally great insight into the complexities of his relationship with Jack – but saying any more would give away the plot twist, and that's worth discovering on your own.

Story: Imaginary
Author: Dune
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 712
Author's summary: Deep inside the Citadel, there is a lonely room, forever holding a lonely Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor
Warnings: Spoilers for S4.

Recced because: Short but powerful, this fic takes a line from The Stolen Earth and follows its implications it to a conclusion that feels both natural and disturbing. In the author's note, Dune says she isn't sure if it's an AU to New Who or if it's set sometime after S4. In truth, the very ambiguity only adds to the story's strength. I feel like I'm damning with faint praise, but it's a very good, very thought-provoking fic and one I think everyone ought to read.

Story: Destiny Can Wait
Author: Dune
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 749
Author's Summary: Seven times Jack met the Endless.
Characters/Pairings: Jack, the Endless, Ten
Warnings: None

Recced because: As with the previous crossover I recced this week, "Destiny Can Wait" is very true to its characters; in this case, the Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, anthropomorphized representations of Death, Dream, Destruction, Destiny, Despair, Desire, and Delirium. The story is a short set of drabbles, touching on Jack's encounters with all seven siblings, and each vignette has the dreamy, melancholy quality that marks so much of the Sandman series. These are beautifully written pieces, worth reading even if you've never picked up any of the Gaiman graphic novels ... and if you haven't, I hope you'll consider doing so after this story.

Sorry for the delayed recs again - still ill & too hyper about tonight to think much, so I'm doing two at once again. >.< But still - read, enjoy, review. ^^

Story: The Wolf and the Phoenix
Author: Dune
Rating: All ages
Author's summary: The beginning of a beautiful friendship...
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, The TARDIS on his desk, The (actual) TARDIS, The Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None
Word Count: 5029

Recced because: This is the story of how that little piece of coral/TARDIS got on to the desk of one Jack Harkness. And where it (and he) went from there.
I really really really wish this story were canon. Yes, I know I've said that about nearly every story I've recced this week, but with this one I can't help but repeat myself. ^.~ Dune's painted a wonderful picture of how the TARDIS came to be with Jack, and how they manage to build a relationship nearly as close as the Doctor and his TARDIS. Without spoiling what happens, it has a bittersweet but hopeful ending (the kind I'm fond of, though goodness knows why xD) for all parties involved.

A good read if you're feeling in a contemplative mood and want to distract yourself from the squee of this evening. ^^ But unfortunately, my next rec may well undo that.

First off, a HUGE apology - I got muddled and thought I was reccing from the 17th, not the 11th. I also had been expecting a reminder email, but never mind; it's still my fault for getting the date wrong. I hope it's okay if I make two recs a day until I've caught up. Sorry, mods!

Story: Before I Sleep

Author: Dune

Rating: All Ages

Author's summary: Time and life blur. Sometimes Jack's grateful, sometimes he's not. But no matter what, he has to live with it

Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, with mentions of Tenth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler

Warnings: None

Recced because: This story haunted me for quite some time after reading it. It's Jack's immortal life, many, many thousands of it, and how he manages to live it, 'woven into mankind's history', living and dying, saving the universe and becoming known throughout it. Dune spins a poignant, heart-wrenching, yet ultimately uplifting account of what Jack's life might be like and one way it could eventually end. It's a short vignette, yet packs a punch far greater than many stories ten times its length.

Selected quote:
There're legends about him. The Lonely Wanderer he's called; worshipped and feared throughout the universe. Yet the statues he finds are of an old, wise man, never anything like him. He never ages beyond that one grey hair.
