Story: Taking Care
Author: MacBeth
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1324
Author's Summary: In the end, there will be time to enjoy the classics -- and the old favourites. Written after "The Day of the Doctor".
Characters/Pairings: The Caretaker, The TARDIS
Warnings: Spoilers for Day of the Doctor.

Recced because: I couldn’t think of a better way to end this reccing stint than by sharing this wonderful post-50th anniversary fic with everyone. It’s a beautifully done piece in which the Caretaker delights in his chosen retirement. The descriptions, the suggestions of alien worlds, the small references, the way that it picks up on strands of the anniversary episode – it’s something special.

Story: Beyond the Veil
Author: AceOnGallifrey
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1827
Author’s Summary: The Tenth Doctor discovers that his song isn't ending: it's just leaving to join in a greater melody, above and beyond death itself. Oneshot of various pairings and much joy.
Characters/Pairing: 1st Doctor and Susan Foreman, 2nd Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon, 3rd Doctor and Jo Grant, 4th Doctor and Romana, 5th Doctor and Vislor Turlough, 6th Doctor and Peri Brown, 7th Doctor and Ace McShane, 8th Doctor and Grace Holloway, 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler, 10th Doctor and Donna Noble, 11th Doctor and River Song, 12th Doctor and Michael, 13th Doctor and Inez
Warnings: Just for feels, folks.

Recced because: An interesting look at Time Lord afterlife. What happens to the Doctor we know and love when he regenerates? AceOnGallifrey posits the lovely theory of Timeheart and what it’s like, and if you’re not trickling a tear or two by the time you’re done reading it, then I’d be surprised.

Story: River Song and the Lost Tomb of Ardûn
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4928
Author's Summary: River's professor for her first archaeology class was a self-declared expert on late twentieth and early twenty-first century Earth history. Naturally, she hated his guts.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, River Song, The Doctor (other)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This has everything you want in an adventure: mystery, humour, action, and a brilliant pay-off.  Plus, River Song.  This is the River I always wanted to see onscreen - competent, independent, adventurous, and a working archaeologist; the glimpses we get of her at university are fascinating.  The worldbuilding is completely believable, with little details and throwaway facts fleshing out what's already a compelling setting.

Basically?  I want to have gone to university with River Song, and I want to have had this adventure.  Because it's brilliant.

Title: Prospero's Daughter
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3046
Author's Summary: For twenty-seven years after her father’s death, Ruth Mills has a guardian angel to watch over her. He’s called the Doctor, but this story isn’t even a little bit like a fairy tale.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor and Ruth Mills from the Big Finish Unbound series, Full Fathom Five
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: More forays to the fringes of the fandom, of Alternate Universes and audio adventures. This is a companion piece to the BFA Full Fathom Five. [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook says of this story, "This story is spoiler-free and intended as a teaser/prequel, or standalone, set in the audio’s 27 year gap. (Trust me. Somebody had to do it.)" Well, no one better than herself to do so, and not just because the AU Doctor in this story is played by perennial favorite David Collings ;)

I don't think I'm spoiling when I say that the audio gives us a glimpse into a darker Doctor, one for whom the ends justify the means. Just that tiny tweak in his personality is enough to set forth a strange parody of events we might have seen in a kinder, gentler character like the Eleventh or perhaps Third incarnations, undercut by nothing but ulterior motives. The audio is definitely worth tracking down and listening to. And this story is worth reading for its expert prose and for the way the author effortlessly captures the spirit and character of the audio story, taking everything we know and love and recognize about the Doctor, turning it on its ear, and leaving us asking, 'But what if...'

Right, hello again; I'm your tour guide on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax for the next two whole weeks. It's a bit early yet as I still have an hour to go on Sunday but I've got a full day planned tomorrow and might not get to it if I waited. Anyhow, I'm going to start with a story that I'm kind of surprised hasn't been recc-ed before. But, with all the new Doctor talk and the speculation about who might be cast (Idris Elba? Helen Mirren?), well, you might imagine why this story came to mind.

Title: Sunny and the Magic Box
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 13678
Author's Summary: Sunny's read about wizards. They were never like this.
Characters/Pairings: Original Doctor, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: It's a possible glimpse into what might have been, now that the dice have been cast. Written back in 2007 but so much of it still reads true to the Doctor as a character, even to the rest of Tennant's run and Matt Smith's as well. It's part after-school adventure story like I used to read when I was ten, and it's part humor and part horror, with an instantly recognizable Doctor despite being "strangely translated." This is part of a series, of which the first story has already been recc-ed many moons ago, and the third is unfinished, but this one can be read standalone as well, and is rather brilliant at that :)

"They" say time flies when you're having fun. Well, this week certainly seems to have flown past and I have indeed had fun sharing some recs with all of you and hopefully turning you on to some good fics you wouldn't otherwise have read. Until next time, then, I leave you with this, a very funny drabble:

Story: Flying Visit
Author: johne
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: The head of Torchwood Three catches a couple of trespassers.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (Fatal Death), Emma, and another character...
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well, I'll try and keep this brief or it will end up being longer than the fic itself, but it made me laugh like a drain the first time I read it, and that's reason enough to be going on with, I think. It also features the Doctor from the Red Nose Day charity special Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death, as portrayed by Rowan Atkinson, and his companion Emma as played by Julia Sawalha, and you don't get enough of that kind of thing. Now, if you're not familiar with a certain other television programme also starring Rowan Atkinson, you're probably not going to get the joke, but see it as an opportunity to broaden your pop cultural horizons (I'm sure you'll find at least a couple of relevant clips if you go searching on YouTube). And then you can come back and read this and marvel at the author's masterful bait and switch here, while also agreeing how very, very appropriate his choice of character is. Plus, you'll be better able to imagine the unimpressed expression on Atkinson!Doctor's face:

"The Doctor rolled his eyes."

And with that, I bid you au revoir. ;)

Hello! I'm choco-chick and I'll be your friendly neighbourhood (shut up spell-check I'll spell it the Canadian/British way if I want to!) reccer this week :) I used to be a Doctor/Rose shipper (which is kinda strange cause I didn't like her or ship D/R till S3) but  I overdosed on them :P Now I've moved on to anything with the Master, UNIT, or Donna.

I'm going to start the week with something light and cracky. And proof that Moffat ships Doctor/Master.

Story:
Makeover of the Daleks
Author:
DameRuth
Rating: Teen
Word Count:
3913
Author's Summary:
Within find sensitive Daleks, a female Doctor, an un-Masterly Master, and some stuff that I shudder to admit made me laugh.
Characters/Pairings:
Emma, The Daleks, The Doctor (Other), The Master (Pryce)
Warnings:
None

Recced because:
The perfect excuse to rewatch "The Curse of Fatal Death" again because this is a perfect sequel.  It has everything you'd want. Poor Emma trying to adjust to a female Doctor who wears heels better than her. The Master unknowingly being completely whipped. And the poor Daleks trying so hard to be nice with the odd slip of the tongue along the way ;) AND an Eddie Izzard reference! :D

Story:  Somnambulists
Author:  ClocketPatch
Rating:  All Ages
Word Count: 15259
Author's Summary:  "We live to survive our paradoxes."--The Tragically Hip
Characters: The Doctor
Warnings: None

This fic is delightfully trippy, but if you hang with it, you'll be rewarded.  It takes what the Cartmel Masterplan intended and combines it with the New Who mythos surrounding the Doctor.  ClocketPatch captures just how alien the Academy and Time Lords are.
