Story: Mother's Day
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1224
Author's Summary: It should've been her.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter/Jenny ("The Doctor's Daughter")
Warnings: None

Recced because: Alice and Jenny are a small rarepair, but they have a few fans, and every fic I've ever read with them seems plausible because of how abrupt their endings were in their shows (Torchwood: Children of Earth and "The Doctor's Daughter" episode of Doctor Who). They're also one of the few Whoniverse pairings I don't mind looking for babyfic for, in part because F/F babyfic in general is so rare to find. Here, Alice is tormented with thoughts about not being the surrogate mother for a princess as well as thoughts about losing her son. Jenny is there to ease Alice's pain. I love their interactions here--everything between these two makes me smile.

Title: I've been doing bad things
Author: Penny
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2507
Author's Summary: "This is Doctor Zoe Heriot, senior technician aboard station seven. Making my final report. Experiment Zeta is a failure." Zoe's in the middle of sacrificing herself to save the earth from a hoard of the undead when she's rescued by a mysterious blonde girl with a homemade energy-weapon. Or, Zoe and Jenny team up to fight zombies.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot, Jenny, Zoe/Jenny
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: Ummm... it's Zoe and Jenny fighting zombies? Do you need more? I love the character voices and the humor and descriptions and the frenetic pace and plot, and the fact that the author gives an entirely earnest and believable (within the DW universe) take on the base-under-siege trope with "artificially reanimated corpses". It's fun and hilarious and action-packed and as sweet as sweet can be when your first date is being rescued from a zombie horde.

Story: Dungeons and Daughters
Author: gnossienne_nr1
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2358
Author's Summary: Donna and the Doctor find Jenny again. Shenanigans ensue. Mostly in dungeons.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jenny, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None:

Recced Because: Jenny, the Doctor's daughter, doesn't get a lot of coverage in fanfic, but what there is tends to be pretty good. This is one of the better non-slash examples; she's reunited with Ten and Donna, who are essentially her parents, and wacky fun ensues.

Story: The Darkness is Coming
Author: Diciple of Time
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 104,774
Author's Summary: The new drums are more dangerous than the Master knows, and he and the Doctor will have to face a part of their past they forgot. S4 Rewrite, Master/Doctor, two chapter crossover with Firefly
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simms!Master, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Jenny
Warnings:. Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: One of the pleasures of reccing is that you get a chance to highlight stories that otherwise might be missed or passed over. Today’s rec takes a little patience to appreciate, but I think it’s worth the effort, particularly if you’re a Doctor/Master fan. It’s an AU story where the Master, mysteriously resurrected after LotTL, shows up on the planet of the Ood to help the Doctor and Donna. The drums have changed, and the Master has decided to take the Doctor up on his offer to travel in the TARDIS with him. It takes a couple of page views before the action starts, and things don’t really take off until Chapter 2, but once they do, it’s a wild and wonderful ride. For those skeptical about a reformed!Master, don’t worry. He’s still the Master – things aren’t automatically “sunshine and daisies.” There is a logical explanation for everything (well, logical by Whovian standards) and the author does a great job of wrapping it all up by the end. The character interactions are great – I loved the Master and Donna snarking at each other, and watching the Master deal with Sylvia Noble is a treat. As a bonus, there is a great Firefly crossover in the middle chapters.

Story: Dirge Without Music
Author: mamfidd82
Rating: PG
Word Count: 2,777
Author's Summary:Dealing with grief, rage, thwarted hope and blame - not exactly the Doctor's forte. Spoilers for S4.06
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Jenny
Warnings: None

Recced because: Although The Doctor's Daughter wasn't a perfect episode it brought up a lot of really interesting themes. I love the way this story presents the idea that some of the things that make the Doctor a character we love can also make him dysfunctional in many ways. The story is somewhat depressing, but it leaves me at least more thoughtful than sad. Well written and worth a read in my opinion.

Story: To Her Coy Mistress
Author: kaydee falls
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6862
Author's Summary: In which there are interrupted heists, chance encounters, snogging, and headaches over verb tenses. A non-linear love story. (Christina/Jenny)
Characters/Pairings: Jenny, Lady Christina de Souza, Jack Harkness, Reinette; Jenny/Christina
Warnings: None given

Recced because: This is actually the first fic I found on Teaspoon that I loved. The pairing isn't one I'd have thought of, but it really works, and the prose is lovely. The angst here kind of hits you in waves, as more and more of the tangled timeline is revealed. Read it twice for extra tragedy. (And if angst isn't your thing the way it's mine, don't let that deter you: this is also a free-wheeling adventure story.)

Story:Out of the Dark
Author: Astrogirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4389
Characters: Jenny
Author's Summary: Jenny finds the limits of the universe, and keeps right on going.

Recced because: It's an epic tale told in under 5000 words, in which Jenny from "The Doctor's Daughter" traverses the universe and finds her perfect calling. It's not often you see this kind of style done well-- sweeping narration and far-reaching plot points, but still coherent, brilliantly characterized, complete and satisfying. But Astrogirl is great at it. I love the description of Jenny's perceptions, I love the scope of the story and her journey, and the ending is just perfect. We only met Jenny for one episode, but she had a distinct personality mix of naivete, hardness, and unchecked Time Lord potential that Astrogirl captures beautifully.

Story: Aim for the Unknown
Author: hafital
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4548
Author's Summary: "What is this? What story are we in?"
"I don't know," says Jenny. "Isn't it wonderful?"
Characters/Pairings: Jenny/River Song
Warnings: If you know who Jenny and River are then you don't need no warnings.

Recced because: Because it's such an unusual pairing that works wonderfully. Because it's fun to see the adventures that River goes on now. Because seeing Jenny diving into things head first is fun. Because this is a fun romp from start to finish. Because there's a bit of angst thrown in, but it has a happy ending. In short this story is just fun.

Story: All Changes Big and Small
Author: the_seventh_l
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1116
Author's Summary: 'Looking in the mirror, Frobisher thought he looked pretty good, even without a beak.' Sometimes even a shape-shifter needs to stay the same. Slight spoilers for "The Doctor's Daughter" and the end of "Journey's End".
Characters/Pairings: Frobisher, Iris Wildthyme, Jenny
Warnings: none

Recced because:

Because Monday's are rather awful sometimes, here's a bit of crack to brighten the day!

For those not in the know, Frobisher is a shapeshifting alien – a Whifferdill to be precise – who likes to wear a penguin body most of the time. In this story Frobisher is having a bit of a mid-life crisis, with some interesting results… the line about him, Jenny, and an adopted Adipose alone make this fic worth its weight in gold. Also, the ending, which explains Frobisher’s fate, is scary-plausible (if a little AU).

Story: More Than An Echo series
Author: Samfeasor
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: Each story is between 400-1,000 words, and there are 12 stories
Author's Summary: The continuing adventures of the Doctor's daughter. A creature of first experiences, she is growing and learning exponentially, traveling the universe in the year 6012 (New Byzantine Calendar) and trying to lead the kind of life that would make her father proud: an exemplary one. These stories take place, to the best of my ability, in "chronological" order, as Jenny ages and learns from day to day.
Characters/Pairings: Jenny, River Song
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is one of the best Jenny writers out there, period. I have to say I didn't like Jenny's character at all post-episode and was reluctant to read any sort of fic with her, but this series caught my eye and has kept me reading ever since. Jenny is multi-dimensional, fun, naieve but completely identifiable. It feels like the reader is along for the trip! The little addition of River Song as a guide just makes the ride that much more fun!

Author's Summary: Jenny has discovered religion, and debriefs her friend over tea.
Characters/Pairings: Jenny
Warnings: None
Word Count: 809

Recced because: This author has Jenny's voice down pat (and if you like Jenny, read her other fics) She's managed to blend the innocence of someone only a few months old with the experience of someone who is part Time Lord and all soldier and come up with these wonderful ideas of what Jenny traveling the universe looks like. In this one she has tea with a friend and tries to figure out what religion is and what the soul means.

Story: Summer Acquaintances
Author: ann_blue
Rating: PG
Word Count: 5213
Author's Summary: Luke makes a good friend from a mysterious blonde girl he meets by chance on a trip. Yet, is it just a summer acquaintance?
Characters/Pairings:  Jenny, Luke Smith, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: Spoilers for SJA Series 1 and Episode 6 of Series 4 of Doctor Who

Recced because: Jenny and Luke is one of those pairings that has to happen and is adorably cute. ann_blue writes both of them superbly in character, and writes Sarah-Jane fantastically. It flows beautifully and the romance between the two is sweet but not OTT. It's beautifully written and definitely worth a read.

Story: Gravity
Author: schildkroet
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Jenny soon learns that the cosmos is a better place if you can share it.
Characters/Pairings: Jenny (from The Doctor's Daughter)/Astrid
Warnings: none
Word Count: 735 words

Recced because: I wasn't crazy about Jenny on the show, but this story treats her so lovingly it won me over; I already adored Astrid, and this is a perfect examination of what could be post-Voyage of the Damned. This is a beautiful little bite of a story, with Jenny learning, exploring, and running both from and toward her past, and finding an ally in an unexpected form. They are each other's centre of gravity: together they can take on the universe.

Story: Being Donna Noble
Author: wonderfulchild
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 8599
Author's summary: Donna discovers that traveling with the Doctor takes finding yourself to a whole new level.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, Jenny, Romana II, Fourth Doctor, Braxiatel, Rose Tyler
Warnings: Spoilers S4 through Midnight and the preview for Left Turn, but no actually spoilers for that episode.

Recced because: A week and a half ago I joined the Mod Team at Teaspoon and I'm very glad I did, because working the Queue has led me to finding so many fics that I might never have noticed otherwise. This is one of them. I spent the weekend after validating this with my fingers crossed hoping that no one would beat me to reccing this here. I think this fic is that good.

Wonderfulchild takes one of the theories surrounding the season finale--I'm sure most of you have heard it before, it dates back to last autumn and should be fairly widespread by now--and she runs with it to the bitter end. This is a theory that is almost always played for laughs when it winds up in fic. Wonderfulchild treats it with utter seriousness. She makes it work with canon, in fact she makes it work so well that by the end of the fic I found myself half-convinced that it was really going to happen onscreen.

This fic is magnificent and heart-breaking. Go read it.

Oh, and here's a bit of Donna's first dream sequence to tease you with. )
