Story: Inhuman (and other tales through time)
Author: TheBigCat
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3096
Author's Summary: Nobody expected Thomas Schofield to become a famous author. Possibly the person most surprised by it was Schofield himself.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield, Clara Oswin Oswald, The Doctor (7th), Other Characters
Warnings: None, but quite a few spoilers for several Big Finish audios featuring the Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Hex.

Recced because: Companions' post-TARDIS lives are almost always something to think about. This story explores one possibility for Hex's future in a creative way.

Story: Change
Author: Mink
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2,872
Author's Summary: “Transmogrification gun”, the box says, and Hex doesn’t think much of it.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Hex, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is another one that caught my eye in the queue, and I immediately knew I had to rec it someday. Ace is so very Ace in this story, fierce yet playful, first seducing Hex into using the transmogrification gun Ace has already grown quite comfortable with, then seducing Hex himself. Genderswap can be tough to pull off effectively without falling into stereotype territory, but that never happens here; each character remains recognizably themselves, no matter what body they're in, and takes pleasure in discovering the thrill of the new – and how surprisingly comfortable it can become.

Story: dreamings of meetings
Author: aces
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4133
Author's Summary: Hex, in “The Settling”: I thought I saw lemon trees in the library…or maybe I dreamt them.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield, The Doctor (7th), The TARDIS
Warnings: None
Recced because: It's hard to describe this story without spoiling it. I suppose I can say that Hex comes aboard the TARDIS, and clever scenes of his getting to know the ship and its inhabitants are alternated with vivid depictions of the mysterious dreams he begins to have. The imagery is gorgeous, the exploration of the TARDIS is lovely, and the atmosphere is wonderfully dreamy.

Story: Plasticine and Shells
Author: shinyjenni
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3048
Author's Summary: Seven, Ace and Hex have a nice evening out.
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace, Hex
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is just the loveliest little story. When I first read it, my comment was that I wanted to pinch its cheeks and give it kisses, which is still true. Everyone is lovingly in character, there's a little mystery, Ace and Hex are just the right canon-level of shippy, and there's dancing - delightful. Even if you're not familiar with Hex from the audios, this is a great adventure to "meet" him in!

Hello Calufrax! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler. Here are some more of my favorite stories from the Teaspoon, which I am very excited to rec to you!

Story: Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6103
Author's Summary: “How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Herriot, Second Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Romana II, Fourth Doctor, Erimem, Fifth Doctor, Melanie Bush, Sixth Doctor, Hex Schofield.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a work of brilliance, and I really mean that. The structure of it -- interspersing scenes between the Seventh Doctor and Ace with scenes between earlier Doctors and their companions -- is very well done, and the writing is top-notch, but all of that is almost irrelevant once you come to realize the central conceit of the fic, which is truly a thing of marvelous beauty. If you don't know all the Doctors or companions involved, don't worry, because this is a fic where knowing the characters isn't important (I don't know them all either). All you really need to know about is the TARDIS -- and you might just pick up a new piece of fanon by the end.

Last day. I owe you guys another two-fer, don't I? I'm completely drained after watching the God Complex, ouch ouch ouch, so in near conclusion, have some slashy porn:

Story: That Same Old Story
Author: Nilamarthiel
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1006
Author's Summary: Contains adult content which may prove to not only be above R rating but also be bromantic and man-nurse-y. Keep that in mind if that isn't your cup of tea.
Characters: Rory/Hex
Warnings: Explicit Sex
Recced because: It's the story of the male nurse who gets swept up in the crazy non-linear life of the TARDIS because of the woman he loves, and whose life as it turns out, ends up being more intertwined with the Doctor's than he'd known. Yes, both of them. What can I say, it's drunken, hot hurt/comfort sex up against a wall between Hex and Rory while they (unknowingly) compare notes on the women the Doctor sweeps up in his path. It's awesome.

Story: Not Necessarily In That Order
Author: shinyjenni
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 684
Author's Summary: Hex lives in space now.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This story is a series of moments in the TARDIS. They're each interesting and fun and completely true to character. Seven and Ace and Hex are a great team, and I liked getting to see the quieter, more domestic moments.

Hi again, I'm [livejournal.com profile] eve11 and I'm your recc-er for this week. I've got a great list of stories to rec this week and I am so excited to share some of my favorites! I've got some fantastic adventure stories lined up with a variety of different doctors, along with a few other genres. So, to start off:

Story: Syntax of Things
Author: ClocketPatch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 42952
Author's Summary: Seven, Ace and Hex go for a holiday in the jungle. Of course, these things never turn out quite as planned.
Characters/Pairings: Seven, Ace and Hex
Warnings: Mild swearing

Recced because: I love stories where the place becomes almost a character in itself. In this story, ClocketPatch brings the jungle to life, and populates it with a set of original characters who could carry the story on their own. And on top of that, the Doctor, Ace and Hex are in perfect character. The Doctor is enigmatic yet empathetic, and Ace and Hex engage in the usual teasing banter, though you can also see the seed of something more, especially as the plot unfolds. It's a timey-wimey mystery, with action and cliff-hangers, original characters and a new twist on some old villains, that unfolds just like a brand new Big Finish adventure. Go, read it!

Story: When the Lights Fade
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wiccagirl24
Rating: All Ages
Word count: 1329
Author's summary: There is a price to be paid for being the Rebel Queen and standing against a tyrant. post ep for the BFA "Live 34".
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Hex, Seven
Warnings: references to torture

Recced because: The author's summary describing this as a post-ep for "Live 34" (one of my favourite BFs, for the way it plays with the medium, but that's beside the point); it's a wonderful examination of this Team TARDIS and what they're willing to sacrifice for the greater good, and the different ways they look after each other in the aftermath. I'm particularly in love with what the Doctor does at the very end.

Story: A Bad Day
Author: Megumi
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1024
Author's Summary: Hex gets separated from the Doctor and stumbles upon another Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Hex, Seven, Ace, Ten (vaguely Ace/Hex)
Warnings: None

A rather adorable ficlet in which Hex has a bad day, has an encounter with Ten, and finds a bit of a silver lining to getting caught in a dimensional storm. Despite the brevity of the story, each character is captured perfectly.

Story: No Ordinary War
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1052
Author's Summary: The Time War, as viewed from the outside.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: Heartbreak.

Recced because: I actually hate [livejournal.com profile] livii for writing this story because it broke my heart into a million little pieces. It's beautiful and horrible and, as I'm sure anyone who reads Who fan fiction is well aware, her writing is always magnificent. I don't actually want to say anything about the plot, so no spoilers. Just read it.

Story: Smoking and Foxholes Can Be Dangerous to Your Health
Author: aces
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2666
Author's Summary: “Why does the Doctor always have to land us in these sorts of situations anyway?”
Characters/Pairings: Hex, Fitz, The Eighth Doctor and a side of The Seventh Doctor and Ace.
Warnings: Fitz ends up in hospital?

Recced because: Companions meeting each other is always fun. Companions meeting each other in foxholes is even better. Also Hex gets to be Nurse Hex and is utterly fabulous at it. The dynamics between Hex and Fitz are fun. They banter, call each other names, and even have a wee slashy undertone.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1159
Author's Summary: 5 companions Fitz almost married.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Bernice Summerfield, Donna, Fitz, Hex, Jack Harkness, Susan.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Everyone needs a little hilarity on a Monday, and this piece fits the bill. There aren't nearly enough stories written for book and audio companions, and this one has both which makes it even more delightful. Originally written for [livejournal.com profile] churchontime, it's precisely as stated in the summary and every bit as ridiculous as you'd think it would be.

(Incidentally, I'm sorry for not posting the last couple of days! I shall be making up for it with these two and one more later today!)

Story: From Monte Carlo, With Love
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2254
Author's Summary: The quest is the quest. Throw in a couple of pirate hats, and stir.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schoffield, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, Ace/Hex, Rose/Mickey/Jake, there's some other mixes as well, like a bit of Rose/Ace.
Warnings: None

Recced because: I ALMOST feel bad reccing something of [livejournal.com profile] livii's because her stuff is so uniformly good it speaks for itself but this one is just so much fun. I love the glimpse into what Rose and Mickey and Jake got up to and what they were like together in the alt!verse. I love the similarities drawn between Rose/Mickey/Jake and Ace/Hex because to me at least, Ace and Rose are quite similar, as are their relationships with the men in the fic and that really works well, I think. They're just a really good pairing and threesome to throw together, they've got a lot in common and they snark so well. To top it all of, they're thrown together in a very fun, caper-ish type adventure thing with silly costumes! Don't be put off if you haven't met Hex before, [livejournal.com profile] livii has his voice and his relationship with Ace down really well so you could arguably use this fic to work out whether you might like him or not!

Story: Past the Last Exit

Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1111
Author's Summary: "She can't be tamed," the Doctor says, "and she might not stay." Hex tries to love her anyway.
Characters: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield, The Doctor (7th)

Recced Because: Hex was new to me, when I first read Past the Last Exit, but Livii artfully brings him to life and Ace and Hex together, while honoring Ace's independence and her life with the Doctor.

Another fun week – thanks! And after six days of femslash, let's close out with one gen. :)

Story: Cartography
Author: eponymous_rose
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: A map is a symbolic representation that highlights relationships between elements of space. Some analogies write themselves.
Characters: Ace, Hex, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none
Word Count: 1463

Recced because: This is just the most darling and wonderful piece of work; each character is drawn so perfectly it blew me away, and their interactions are absolutely adorable. From Seven's cheating to Hex passing on secrets, tied up with Ace making a choice that makes the already fabulous story even better, this is packed full of aliens, adventures, friendship, and just that right hint that we're being told a bigger story, and that the characters are, as the story says, finding their own directions.

Story: Can't All Be Wedding Cake
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 928
Author's Summary: Getting up the nerve to pop the question to Ace requires a man to be made of stern stuff.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Hex
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's spot on Hex. From his awkwardness to the planning out how to propose to the ways in which things go wrong.

Story: Overthrown
Author: aces
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Hex + nursing = Ace in big trouble.
Characters/Pairings: Hex, Ace
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,600 words

Recced because: Absolutely adorable audio!fic; this is set just after Live 34, but it stands alone very well, in case you haven't heard it. Ace and Hex are both perfectly in character, with wonderfully crackling dialogue. Hex nurses Ace, and for better or worse she lets him; the story has just a hint of shippiness lurking underneath, but really is about friendship and love, in all its forms. With some great lines, such as Ace snarking about Hex's propensity to take pulses with "Are you sure it's not just because you always had a secret desire to prop young women up with pillows and feel up their wrists?", discussions about responsibility, getting to see Hex perform and be utterly excellent at his job, and Ace's repeated desire to throw an alarm clock at Hex's head, the characters are lovingly rendered and this is just a complete joy to read.

Story: Doctors and Nurses
Author: uktechgirl
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: In the middle of a war, Ace and Hex get some unexpected quiet time.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Hex, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,350 words

Recced because: This is so in-character it almost hurts; every word could be coming straight from my favourite of the audios. It's quiet and subtle and gorgeous: there's a war on, and no one is left unscathed, but through the grimness and devastation and blood and horror, there's a little bit of hope. From field triage to plastic surgery on Barbie dolls to a heart-breakingly just-about-shippy conclusion, with spot-on dialogue and an amazing sense of time and place in between, this made my heart sing.

Story: In Which Ace and Hex Done Sex
Author: Kesomon
Rating: Not given, but I'd estimate it as All Ages
Word Count: 306
Author's Summary: Title says it all.
Characters/Pairings: Ace, Hex, Bernice Summerfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: Kesomon points out at the top of the story that it's crack and it is: good crack. It does involve moving events around a bit to make it work, but the payoff is worth it. No excerpt for this one, and I am avoiding saying much about the story because it is so short that anything I do say would give the whole thing away. Just bear in mind that the title and the summary may or may not be misleading.

Story: Punk Rock Girl
Author: livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2267
Author's Summary: In which it's retro night, strange girls with pink hair have code names, and Hex is spoiled for any other girl, ever, at the tender age of eighteen. Where's your head at?
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Hex
Warnings: None given, but there is a sex scene in there.

Recced because: It's such a brilliant depiction of Ace at her most human and strong. There's a whole subplot going on in the background and livii manages to make it central to the plot and both completely unimportant to the majority of the word count. Brilliant. Review this fic - it's got a single, solitary review and it's worth so much more despite it's brevity.

Story: Bizarre Love Rectangle
Author: uktechgirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3115
Author's summary: Peri gets drunk, Erimem gets revealing, Hex discovers his inner Whovian fanboy, and Ace is ace. Follows on directly from the DWM Big Finish audio The Veiled Leopard, which featured the two sets of companions but never allowed them to meet, which was an awful shame. Spoilery for said audio, but perfectly comprehensible if you haven’t heard it.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Erimem/Hex/Peri, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I hadn't yet heard The Veiled Leopard the first time I read this story. I loved it anyway. Since then I've listened to Veiled Leopard four or five times, and I love this fic even more. It's just the kind of continuation I wish that audio really had had, throwing two of my favorite companion teams together and letting them getting to know each other. Their interaction includes getting drunk, flirting, and gossiping about the Doctor. All good stuff. Bonus: two amusing scenes with my favorite Doctors (today, anyway), Five and Seven.

Story: Collected Ficlets
Author: [livejournal.com profile] livii
Rating: All Ages through Adult (each ficlet rated separately)
Word Count: 11,828 (most ficlets are under 500 words)
Author's Summary: What it says on the tin - a collection spot for drabbles and ficlets of ~1000 words or less.
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa/Tegan, Jack/Susan, Rose/Adam, Rose/Jabe, Sarah Jane/Benton, Sarah Jane/Benton/Harry, Benton/Yates, Benton/Jo, Harry/Benton, Barbara/Susan, Master/Brigadier, Master/Jo, Third Doctor/Jo, Romana/Duggan, Rose/Nancy, Tenth Doctor/Jo, Tenth Doctor/Martha, Seventh Doctor/Rose, Rose/altverse!Suzie, Rose/altverse!Sarah Jane, Rose/Benton, Jack/Ace, Martha/Harry, Martha/Sarah Jane, Ace/Hex, Fifth Doctor/Nyssa
Warnings: nope

Recced because: These are simply amazing. They just might be my favorite thing in all of Who fan fiction, and I don't say that lightly. I don't know how she does it, but [livejournal.com profile] livii manages to pack so much into these little stories. Entire worlds and relationships and so much emotion in tiny snapshots. And I really think there is something for everyone here. Whatever pairings or characters you prefer, whether you enjoy angst or humor or action, it's all there. And the best part is, it looks like she is going to continue to update the masterlist as she writes more of these ficlets, so bookmark this page, people!

(PS. As an added bonus, Benton stars in a number of the stories and she writes him fabulously.)

Story: The World, The Universe
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Hex steps off the yellow brick road.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Hex, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,000 words

Recced because: This absolutely gorgeous story goes AU after the Big Finish audio The Settling, but knowledge of that story isn't particularly required (though it gives some context). After trying holidays to get Hex to stay, and adventures where he realizes that this isn't who he wants to be, he leaves the TARDIS to go and help the world – so utterly in character. The whole story is incredibly sweet without being the tiniest bit sappy – exactly as romantic as Ace/Hex could ever be, and completely satisfying. Add in fabulous details about the TARDIS, Ace trying to pick up girls for Hex at a bar, and drunken almost-kisses, and overall it's a heart-wrenchingly perfect slice of fic for a very underrepresented character and pairing. I just can't recommend it enough.

Story: Dating in the Workplace
Author: Paranoid Seat
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2471
Author's Summary: If anyone had asked the Doctor whether he begrudged his companions their interpersonal relationships, he would’ve denied it strenuously, with much hand-waving and/or babbling. Because it was true! For the most part. Crackfic, plain and simple. Have your brain-bleach on standby. Do not attempt to eat or drink while reading unless you have a valid warantee on your monitor/keyboard.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara, Ben/Polly, Two/Jamie, Brigadier/Benton, Tegan/Nyssa, Peri/Erimem, Ace/Hex, Five/Turlough, Jack Harkness.
Warnings: Crack

Recced because: Sometimes you want to read long plotty gen, sometimes you want to read some character driven angst and sometimes what you really want to read is some brain bendingly hilarious crack!fic.

This fic has something for everyone, and by that I mean that whoever you ship they probably get a mention in there somewhere. It's very funny and never fails to cheer me up any time I read it.

Plus who doesn't love a fic that contains the line 'Captain Jack Harkness, at your service. Ah... I’ll find my pants, shall I?'

Story: Five Times The Doctor Narrowly Avoided Certain Death (With The Help Of His Traveling Companions)
Author: Biichan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1689
Author's Summary: The Doctor gets by with a little help from his friends.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Evelyn Smythe, Harry Sullivan, Hex Schofield, Sarah Jane Smith, Tegan Jovanka, Vislor Turlough, The Master (Delgado), Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I know it's probably cheating a bit, since this story was actually written for me in a ficathon, but it really is one of my favorites. I absolutely adore it, and I just couldn't pass up the chance to point people in its direction.

It's actually a series of five short snapshots in time, each one featuring a different incarnation of the Doctor and his various companions. One of the things that I adore about this story is that it features such a variety of companions, including several from the Big Finish audios who aren't seen in fanfiction nearly enough. (Evelyn! Hex!) It's hilarious at some points, bittersweet at others, and everyone is very much in character.
