Story: Of Toast and Jam
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,468
Author's Summary: Inspired by a conversation between Charley and C'Rizz at the beginning of Absolution, the Doctor encounters several strange adventures before breakfast.
Characters/Pairings: Charley Pollard, Eighth Doctor
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: Don't we all like a little happy piece of fluff? I was giggling all the way through this one, and they have the Eighth Doctor to a T. It's got very nice pacing, little short 'bits' making up the full story. It's very silly, and it makes you warm and fuzzy inside, with just the right amount of excitement on the side! Also, I would rec a story about toast and breakfast while hungry, wouldn't I?

Welcome to Day Five of the fic picking from me! If there's one aspect of the Doctor Who Expanded Universe I adore it's the Big Finish Audios with their grand epic new adventures for the surviving classic Doctors. And as well as several old favourite companions returning like Nyssa, Peri and Ace, we also get some new ones who are every bit as entertaining and engaging. Of all of them I'd say my two favourites are Evelyn Smythe and the companion in this story, Charley Pollard!

Story: Coming Home
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3867
Author's Summary: Charley Pollard's first introduction to the TARDIS. Set after Storm Warning.
Characters: Eighth Doctor, Charley, 'Ramsay'
Warnings: None

Recced because: As the author here writes and for myself for many years I bemoaned the fact that Charley - an self-proclaimed Edwardian Adventuress who'd joined the Eighth Doctor onboard the airship R101 in 1930 together with a flying reptile named after a Prime Minister - never got to view the TARDIS for the first time on audio - by the time we heard her next she'd got used to the ship. So Howlcastle here wonderfully takes that idea and makes a lovely lengthy one-shot with her learning all about the TARDIS and its occupant. Suffice to say that if you haven't heard Storm Warning it might not appeal to you as much but for Charley fans like me it's a real treat!

Story: Can't See for Looking
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2077
Author's summary: Fluffy story in which Charley is indispensable in finding a first edition of 'Oliver Twist' for the Doctor.
Characters: Eight, Charley
Warnings: none

Recced because: The Big Finish audio Chimes of Midnight prompted this story with the line, "Without you I'd never have found that first edition of 'Oliver Twist' at Charring Cross Road." In case you ever wondered about that line, too, Howlcastle tells the story for us. It's delightfully fluffy and the tone (and the banter between these characters) feels just right.

Story: One is the Loneliest Number
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 4581
Author's Summary:A lone tenth Doctor stumbles into an old friend in a Chinese Takeaway. The mystery of her being there is more than just a pleasant surprise, but a prelude to war.
Characters/Pairings:Charley Pollard, Charley Pollard, Lucie Miller, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story was just breathtaking, from the beginning the excellent character voices ring absolutely true. It's end is somehow bittersweet and joyous and leaves you warm and aching. Somehow in the middle of this lush story full of detail the author even manages to sneak in an unexpected bit of fun. I can't imagine you won't enjoy it as much as I did.

Story: "Homesick"
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 2515
Author’s summary: "Jamie is grumpy and the Doctor thinks the only way to improve his mood is a quick trip back home."
Characters/Pairings: Jamie, Two, Zoe
Warnings: None

Recommended because: Jamie, Two and Zoe are one of the great TARDIS teams (IMNSHO), and Jamie has always been a favorite Companion. Thrown constantly into situations well outside his native frame of reference, he always kept his basic core of common sense and honest loyalty. This story is an affectionate, respectful and believable character piece focusing on Jamie's thoughts about his home, his past, and where he belongs.
