clocketpatch: A small, innocent-looking red alarm clock, stuck forever at 10 to 7. (CLOCKETPATCH!)
[personal profile] clocketpatch
Greetings all! I'm Clocketpatch, and after a bit of a tardy start I'm all set to be your resident reccer for the next couple of weeks. I've got a nice mixed bag of eras and styles so hopefully there will be something for everyone. If you see something you enjoy, please leave a comment on the fic itself to let the author know!

Story: The Interview
Author: Llywela
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2187
Author's Summary: Sarah asks Harry for a favour; a meandering bit of fluff with a sting in its tail.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Luke Smith, Rani Chandra, Sarah-Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because:

Harry Sullivan was mentioned (briefly) in this week's episode of Doctor Who, and it's not the first time he's been reference either. For a companion who spent surprisingly little time actually onboard the TARDIS (just a season and a bit... and most of that time the TARDIS was MIA) he has a surprising fandom sticking power. He's old-fashioned, a bit bumbling, and utterly endearing. He is also quite a difficult character to nail down in fic without turning him into a caricature. This fic manages it with gusto.

Even though it is mostly dialogue (a stream of silly interview questions) it perfectly captures both Harry Sullivan and Sarah-Jane Smith and their strong, slightly-teasing friendship. I laughed out loud several times while reading, and came away feeling like I now know infinitely more about these characters and their lives than I did going in. There is some sorrow as well, but the fic doesn't dwell on it. This is a story about friendship and how it endures and enriches us.

And it is beautiful.

Story: No Longer a Sidekick
Author: Annariel
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5930
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Clyde Langer, Fitz Kreiner, Rani Chandra, Samantha Jones, Sarah-Jane Smith
Author's Summary: How did Fitz Kreiner rebuild his life after he left the Doctor? Particularly when aliens will keep interrupting his plans.

Recced Because:

Fitz Kreiner is messed up beyond all belief, and he can't take two steps without wandering into trouble or making a horrible mistake, but for all his flaws, he's also very likeable and much more competent than he gives himself credit for.

Some unspecified time after the EDAs finish, Fitz leaves the Doctor and aimlessly drifts his way onto Sarah-Jane's couch, claiming that he's given up saving the universe and being a sidekick. With a little help from Sarah-Jane, the Bannerman Road gang, a gang of angry Ogron's, and a woman with a time travelling motorbike, he realizes that only half that claim is true.

This fic seamlessly blends canons and timelines from different corners of the Whoniverse. The dialogue is sometimes painful and sometimes hilarious, but always spot on. The details of time and place are richly imagined. The characters live and breathe. And Fitz is perfectly imperfect and compelling as he bumbles his way (with many friendly but forceful nudges) towards accepting his past and making a new beginning.

Story: Back to School
Author: Pendragon
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 7470
Author's Summary: Clyde and Rani end up at Coal Hill School on a foggy November day, and the course of history is unravelling around them.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, Susan Foreman, Clyde Langer, Mr. Smith, Rani Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: I like stories which mix characters from wildly different eras of the Doctor's story. This one plunges Clyde and Rani, from The Sarah Jane Adventures, into the very first Doctor Who story, with potentially catastrophic timey-wimey results.

Story: Perfect Timing
Author: Mertiya
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1892
Author's Summary: During the aftermath of Sarah Jane's abortive wedding, she finds herself wondering how the Doctor managed to show up at exactly the right time. He's never done that before... Spoilers for The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, Rani Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: For me Sarah Jane Smith will always be the quintessential companion. This story takes a canon intervention by The Doctor and runs with it, the result it a warm if slightly AU character study.

Excerpt: “You had rather…perfect timing today,” she said.

“I always have perfect timing!” the Doctor retorted, and Sarah Jane started to laugh. She couldn’t help it. It had been a terrible day, a truly awful day; the loss of Peter was still a fresh, open wound, but the thought of the Doctor having perfect timing was just too much. She sank backward against the door, her laughter perhaps a little hysterical, but it was good. The laughter was good. When she looked up, she wasn’t sure if the tears in her eyes were from the laughter or not. The Doctor was looking quite miffed, an expression that reminded her forcibly of her curly-haired, long-scarfed Doctor.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped. “It’s just…the thought of you having perfect timing. When did we ever end up somewhere you intended us to? And you dropped me off months and miles out of sync with where I was supposed to be.”

He had been looking more than ever like a sulky child, but the (frankly rather cute) expression dropped off his face at the mention of Aberdeen. He turned to the TARDIS controls. “But, no, honestly, you should go,” he said roughly.

“Perfect timing,” she said again. “I appreciate it, Doctor, I really do–but why this time? The children and I have been in danger before–often–twice now with the Trickster. Why didn’t you come then? Why didn’t you come when I nearly bollixed up the entire spacetime continuum trying to save my parents?”

This is my last rec of the week!  It's been fun sharing stories with you all, and I hope you have an awesome rest of the summer (or winter, for the readers down below)!

Story: Carbon, Earth, and Stardust
Author: Rutsky
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2731
Author's Summary: She'd been to the stars and was now of the earth. Luke Smith waits for the world to start again.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde, Luke, Maria, Rani, Sarah Jane, the Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a lovely story coming in the wake of Elisabeth Sladen's real life death, examining how the parallel loss of Sarah Jane affects the characters who knew her. Rutsky handles it very carefully, respectfully, and gracefully, and it's very bittersweet--in reflecting on her loss, her friends and family also remember and celebrate her life.

Story: Put Down Your Pencils and Get Ready for the Practical Exam
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1270
Author's Summary: That was the dinosaurs. Anybody fancy a trip to see some saber-toothed tigers?
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None
Recced because: What's better than Clyde and Rani traveling in the TARDIS with the Doctor? Crack!fic about Clyde and Rani traveling in the TARDIS with the Doctor! It's very funny and very fun, and it's practically guaranteed to leave you smiling.

Story: Five Hundred and Twenty, or Thereabouts
Author: agapi42
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2068
Author's Summary: Luke, Clyde and Rani are not a triangle, and they add up to more than a guaranteed one hundred and eighty.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer/Rani Chandra/Luke Smith, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a SJA fic, which is always a great way to start the week - and in this case, it's also incredibly sweet. What strikes me most about this fic is how intertwined the friendship and love between the main characters is. Like the triangle it describes, neither is more important than the other - they're both two sides of the same coin. Just like all three characters manage to be in character and their awesome selves.

Story: The War of the Roses
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4735
Author's Summary: In which a new flower shop opens across the street from Bloomin' Lovely, Gita's life becomes very strange, and a planetary-wide invasion is thwarted with Tropaeolaceae.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Gita Chandra, Haresh Chandra, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Rani Chandra, and Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: There can never be enough stories about Gita Chandra, especially if Ace, Mickey, Martha, and Sarah Jane are involved. I love it! It's a fun story about thwarting aliens set in the SJA universe. Hey, if Craig Owens can kill a Cyberman with love, why can't Gita and the gang give it a shot with flowers!

Excerpt:

Ms. McShane sighed. "You know, this is the third flower shop we've lost this way."

Martha said, "I keep saying we should try a different business. Something less dangerous."

Her husband added, "We could have a pet store. Or shoes. Men's shoes."

"I like flowers," said Ms. McShane.

Sarah Jane placed an arm around her shoulders. "Maybe change the store name?"

Mickey said, "Yeah. 'Sherwood Florist' is unlucky."

Martha said, "I wanted to call it Everything But Roses. I was outvoted."

Story: The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith: Extended Ending
Author: Weimlady
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4469
Author's Summary: The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith was overrunning badly, so they had to cut a great deal of material from the end. Here's what you missed. It starts just where the televised version ends.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Tenth Doctor, Luke Smith, Rani Chandra, Clyde Langer

Recced because: Like the summary says, this picks up where TWoSJS ends and assumes that the Doctor returns to take Sarah Jane and the kids on one last trip - a trip that includes dinosaurs, water fights, and, at long last, the elusive Florana. It's a fairly fluffy piece on the surface, though very much in character - Luke, Clyde, and Rani are represented especially well, amazed and in awe of what they're experiencing but still very much kids at heart. It's the ending that really packs a punch, though, when the adventure ends and both Sarah and the Doctor are forced to return to a reality that neither of them are quite prepared to deal with. Beautifully understated and bittersweet, the final scene does a great job of showing how they've grown both separately and together.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook, your reccer for the week, and otherwise known as vvj5 on Teaspoon. I'm a big fan of all eras of our amazing show, so hopefully there'll be something for everyone as we go through the week.

Story: The Road Untraveled
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1424
Author's Summary: Just because you part ways with someone doesn't mean they stop influencing your life, as Ace, Mags, and the Doctor find out.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Mags, Seventh Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Third Doctor, Frobisher, Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Second Doctor, Martha Jones, Rani Chandra.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Well. Two recs in two days that feature a suspiciously similar long and strange list of ingredients? What are the chances? There is an explanation, which lies in a recent challenge I made, using 12 prompts that could be played with individually, or together. (And I had no idea what yesterday's rec would be, but I was delighted - I can now rec the other, utterly amazing resulting fic containing all 12 here today.)

What I never envisaged was that someone could take all twelve and write a beautiful, short and serious fic that ties them all together. It should be impossible, but, as it turns out, if the writer is as talented as Daystar Searcher, it suddenly becomes perfectly natural and coherent. The main strand of the story follows Ace and Mags and their separate fortunes and whether either or both regret not staying with each other, but it doesn’t forget to include Welsh myths, vampires, evil giraffes, Rani Chandra, Frobisher etc. etc.. It’s amazing. Really. I could stand here and flail a little more about how impressed I am, but you’d be much better off running away to read it now. So, go; read!

Story: Conserved Relationships in the Sum over Histories
Author: Lurky McLurklurk
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1826
Author's Summary: Rani/Maria futurefic. Or one-of-many-possible-futures fic, anyway. (Also background Luke/Clyde.)
Characters/Pairings: Rani Chandra/Maria Jackson
Warnings: None

Recced because: There's a certain genre of fic out there that probably has a specific term to describe it, but since I don't know the term, I'll call it "let's pair these two characters who never met in canon and see what happens" fic. At first glance, this may seem like one of those fics. But it's not. Or rather, it is, but it's also much, much more.

You see, in Sarah Jane Adventures canon, both Rani and Maria encountered a puzzle-box that keeps people from experiencing the effects of changes in the timeline. Lurky McLurklurk takes that fact and runs with it, telling a tale of what it's like to live your life while around you timelines change, and your memories change with them, but still you're somehow aware of what's going on. The story is very well written, and absolutely fascinating to read, but the icing on the cake is the beautiful portrayal of the Rani/Maria romance (who are both adults in the fic). In the end, this is a story of truly timeless love, and it makes me sad that Rani and Maria never did properly meet in canon. But at least we have this fanfic.

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!

Story: Broken Telephone
Author: Macadamanaity
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,244
Author's Summary: Five conversations about something else.
Characters/Pairings: Luke Smith, Clyde Lander, Rani Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith, Maria Jackson (,K-9)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Good friendships fics are always a treasure, and in this Macadamanaity captured the friendship between the SJA gang perfectly. On the surface, Luke has finally learned the art of practical jokes and is testing his new ability on his old friends. Peel it a bit more and you get a wonderful depiction of friendship that is true to the characters and to the stories they are usually in.

Story: We’ve Seen It At The Movies
Author: vvj5
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1044
Author's Summary: Rani and Clyde are not on a date; it's an investigation. It just happens to involve the local cinema on a Saturday afternoon, that's all...
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Rani Chander
Warnings: None

Recced because:

Is it bad etiquette to rec something that was written for my fandom stocking? I sure hope not, because I love this fic so very much. Part of that might be my enduring love of the awesomeness that is Clyde and the win which is Rani. This fic finds the daring teenage duo going undercover to investigate an alien invasion at the local movie theatre. Thrills! Danger! Deception! Adorable awkwardness!

So sit back, grab a bag of evil popcorn, and enjoy the show.

Story: Closer to Fine
Author: hhertzof
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20442
Author's Summary: The Doctor believes Luke is his son and that Sarah lied to him at Deffrey Vale. The truth is more complex than anyone suspected.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, the Tenth Doctor, the Eighth Doctor, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Luke Smith, Mr. Smith; Doctor/Sarah Jane
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: I've seen a lot of "Luke is really the Doctor and Sarah Jane's biological child!" stories, but this is the first one I've seen to convincingly pull it off. I was thrilled, because I was always really taken with the idea, but couldn't think of any way to make it work with canon. This fic takes that intriguing premise and runs with it, weaving a very clever story that uses all the tools canon gave it.

Most of my recs this week will be crossovers; this one isn't, not exactly, although it includes elements of two shows from the Doctor Who universe:

Story: Cause and Effect
Author: Selena
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1956
Author's Summary: Luke isn’t quite sure of how to handle his rescue. How did the Doctor know when to save him?
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, Mr. Smith, Other Character(s), Rani Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Spoilers for The End of Time and episodes of The Sarah-Jane Adventures

Recced because: Most people would just be grateful if the Doctor saved their lives. Luke worries about it, in a wonderful display of existential angst and dawning apprehension. The story is simply a beautiful character study in which Luke gradually realises that his rescue could be a very bad thing, compares his rescue to the many deaths that the Doctor didn't prevent, and tries to work out how he can still be alive without damaging the timeline.

Story: Through Windows and Small Doors
Author: hafital
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3830
Author's Summary: Rani touched Christina's face, and before she could think, leaned in to kiss her. Sweet and light, with lips parting, Rani tasted the freedom of flying.
Characters/Pairings: Rani Chandra/Christina de Souza, Clyde Langer, Luke Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: I admit to having a weakness for stories where Whoniverse characters who've never met before magically (and awesomely) happen to run into each other. This story features just that, and manages to thread it effortlessly with the events of a Doctor Who episode that I am personally very, very fond of. I like both Christina and Rani quite a lot, and they make for a really unusual and interesting team. There is time travel, mystery, adventure, and a lot of running - all tied together in a delightfully spirited way. Just what any good Whoniverse escapade needs!
