Story: The Unbearable Darkness of Being
Author: Pab
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3530
Author's Summary: The Master has a new scheme to gain immense power and wealth. But first, he must travel to Umbria Prime and steal the Stone of Judgement. But having picked it up, he finds he cannot put it down.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Delgado)
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a great Master-centric character piece set before he encounters the Third Doctor on Earth. As usual, the Master has an evil plan, and he doesn't care how others suffer while he achieves his goal. He follows through with part of his new plan before something unexpected occurs that might change his fundamental nature. Or is that really possible? The author does a nice job of making me both feel sorry for the Master and hate him at certain points.

Author's Summary: Gwen is taking her new role seriously, but things rarely work out as expected. Crack. Spoilers for first episode of Children of Earth but episodes 4 and 5 never happened.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Myfanwy
Warnings: none

Recced because: Time for some Torchwood crackfic! Because of my sad, sad love for the show, I still hold out hope that more TV episodes will be produced, and there's also Big Finish material to keep me going. Plus, of course, fanfic. In this story, we jump back to right after Children of Earth, part 1. With only Jack, Gwen, and Ianto around, the team has two openings. How do they plan to fill the spots? Gwen has an idea that results in chaos, basically. This fic is a quick, amusing read with my favorite part being the bit where Ianto describes why certain candidates just are not going to make the cut.

Author's Summary: Five times Jo Grant surprised the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: none

Recced because: First, this story was recced previously, in around April 2009. However, since the original reccer's LJ and posts to this comm were deleted, I received the go-ahead to select this fic again. It focuses on the relationship between the Doctor and Jo, an underrated companion in my opinion. The author gets her voice just right and highlights her best qualities. While the first four sections are set during the Third Doctor era, the final part features a bittersweet time jump with an older Jo who remains perfectly in character.

Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), Susan Foreman, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I've read some very good stories that address the issue of why the Doctor hasn't revealed his real name. This one, which is described as an "experiment" by the author in reply to a review, is a wonderful character study written in an unusual style that really works. Various characters from the First Doctor era through the Tenth Doctor era are mentioned as the story builds to a beautiful finale. The last couple of lines make a perfect ending.

Story: Dig Deep For Victory! (The High Explosives Mix)
Author: Palgrave

Word Count: 2193
Author's Summary: The Brigadier doesn't think he'll survive having Ace as a houseguest. He's pretty certain his flowerbeds won't. (Post-episode for "Battlefield")
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Doris Lethbridge-Stewart, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: First, this entertaining fic includes my favorite Doctor/companion team (though the Doctor doesn't appear until near the end) plus the Brigadier. Second, it provides plenty of interaction between Ace and the Brigadier, which I really wanted after watching Battlefield a few weeks ago. I was thinking about how those two characters might get along if they had more time to get to know each other, and that's what this fun story depicts. I also love the inclusion of Doris, who only rarely appears in fanfic.

Author's Summary: This happened to Sherlock and me today, and I thought there ought to be some sort of record.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Mel Bush
Warnings: none

Recced because: I finally watched all of the Sherlock episodes, went looking for crossovers with DW, and found this one I really like. The Sixth Doctor and Mel yet again end up in the wrong place at the wrong time and encounter Sherlock, Watson, and Lestrade, who are investigating a murder. The amusing list of messages at the end makes it all even better.

Story: Inequalities
Author: Styrofoam monster
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 355
Author's Summary: To put it simply, things aren't adding up. Zoe-centric.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe
Warnings: none

Recced because: This short, effective story is set after the Time Lords wipe Zoe's memories of her travels with the Doctor and return her to her own time. Although Zoe doesn't remember what happened, she does feel that something is wrong. However, her attempts to work out the problem by using logic don't really succeed. Problem Child, a fic I recced on this comm almost five years ago (where did the time go?), has the same basic premise but is a humorous take on the situation. Proving that there's room for different approaches, Inequalities uses a more serious approach that works just as well in its own way.

Story: Let Her Under Your Skin, Into Your Heart
Author: Starling Night
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2735
Author's Summary: Someone’s figured out a way to save lives that involves painkillers, regeneration, and a lot of surgery. It’s not much fun for the Doctor - but isn't saving people worth the price?
Characters/Pairings: Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond

Recced because: I'm starting off my week of reccing with a darkfic. Just a quick note that this story contains somewhat graphic descriptions of mutilation, starting in the second paragraph. This material suits the tone of the fic, though, which is chilling and disturbing. Basically, the Doctor finds himself in a very unpleasant situation, and he ends up making two difficult decisions. I'm still mulling over his choice at the end of the story.

Author's Summary: Why would tourist board employees need to order pizza at 1 in the morning? Employees of Jubilee Pizza have a couple of theories.
Characters/Pairings: Ianto, original characters
Warnings: none

Recced because: Here's a look back at Torchwood from a few years ago, up until Cyberwoman. It has the outsider perspective of the pizza delivery people who got stuck delivering to that location. I like their speculation about what's really going on at the "tourist board" and the foreshadowing for Cyberwoman.

Word Count: 3444
Author's summary It's 1895, and Jack meets someone who just might have the answers he's been seeking.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Master, implied Fifth Doctor/Master
Warnings: none

Recced because: This story has a great dark and creepy feel to it, with the occasional flash of humor. I like the setting, and how the Master is worked into the plot:

The summer of 1895, Jack's main (in point of fact, only) competition on the unkillables circuit went by the imposing name of Koshey the Deathless.

Jack is operating on limited information while the reader knows more, which is very effective in several places in particular.

Author's Summary: Martha was once the Doctor's maid. Now the Doctor seems to have become Martha's secretary.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, Francine Jones, Tish Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: So, it's after Last of the Time Lords and Martha has left the TARDIS. However, the Doctor still has her mobile. His conversations with the people who phone looking for Martha are humorous, as well as poignant. My favorite bit is the part where he gives her friend Vicky some unsolicited advice.

Story: You're So Sweet, Elise
Author: BetaCadabra
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4181
Author's Summary: Growing tired of its erratic behaviour, Mel persuades the Doctor to upgrade the TARDIS to a newer model, with hilarious consequences. Well, just consequences.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Mel, TARDIS
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a fun story that I found buried in the Sixth Doctor section a few years ago. I remembered it when it came time to rec again (yet somehow never managed to review it until now). It's an amusing take on the idea of what might happen if the Doctor ever did get an updated TARDIS. The new model, Elise, has a distinct personality and proves to be useful in a number of ways. I was just waiting to find out what her fatal flaw might be, because she seemed too good to be true. Also, this is a story where a TARDIS speaking out loud makes sense to me. One of my favorite sections is the visit to Honest Rassilon, the TARDIS dealer:

The owner, Honest Rassilon, was not the legendary Time Lord himself, but a minor Gallifreyan who had adopted the name in the hope that it would give him more authority. He was sorely mistaken. He was a shifty character, to say the least, and Mel wondered if the Doctor had chosen the right place to trade in his TARDIS. Unfortunately, for reasons he kept to himself, the Doctor refused to visit Gallifrey itself, so this was obviously the only option available to him.

Story: House Guest
Author: Gary Merchant
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4141
Author's summary: Liz Shaw persuades the Doctor to go house hunting, with unexpected consequences.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Liz, Brigadier
Warnings: none

Recced because: Short adventure stories with accurate characterization aren't terribly common and neither is Third Doctor-era fic in general, with barely 200 stories currently posted at Teaspoon. So this one stood out to me. It's a nice little piece centering on the Third Doctor and Liz. Believing the Doctor needs to set down more roots on Earth, Liz convinces him to buy a house that turns out be somewhat other than normal; an enjoyable mystery ensues.

Story: Bizarre Love Rectangle
Author: uktechgirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3115
Author's summary: Peri gets drunk, Erimem gets revealing, Hex discovers his inner Whovian fanboy, and Ace is ace. Follows on directly from the DWM Big Finish audio The Veiled Leopard, which featured the two sets of companions but never allowed them to meet, which was an awful shame. Spoilery for said audio, but perfectly comprehensible if you haven’t heard it.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Erimem/Hex/Peri, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: I hadn't yet heard The Veiled Leopard the first time I read this story. I loved it anyway. Since then I've listened to Veiled Leopard four or five times, and I love this fic even more. It's just the kind of continuation I wish that audio really had had, throwing two of my favorite companion teams together and letting them getting to know each other. Their interaction includes getting drunk, flirting, and gossiping about the Doctor. All good stuff. Bonus: two amusing scenes with my favorite Doctors (today, anyway), Five and Seven.

Story: Flowers in Summer
Author: Icepixie
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4248
Author's summary: Charley comes back to Earth. Cecilia Pollard reports. [Spoilers through "Neverland." Eight/Charley, but not excessively so.]
Characters/Pairings: Charley Pollard, Eighth Doctor, other characters
Warnings: none

Recced because: This is a lovely audio-based fic told by an engaging narrator. When Charley went off to travel with the Eighth Doctor, she left behind a family that included a younger sister, Cecilia (nicknamed "Sissy"). Six months after being presumed dead, Charley returns home alone. The story, related via Sissy's journal entries, briefly summarizes the time period between Charley's disappearance and return, then goes into more detail after she's back home. The author establishes an evocative, bittersweet tone that feels just right.

My one concern: Sissy appears in a Gallifrey audio, which Icepixie hadn't heard (neither have I!), so her characterization in this story might be very different. But if readers can get past that potential issue, or don't consider it a problem to begin with, I think they'll really enjoy Flowers in Summer.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 972 words
Author's summary: "Do you ever get the feeling that we're the best two?"
Characters/Pairings: Tosh, Ianto, Owen, Jack, Gwen
Warnings: none

Recced because: In typically incompetent Torchwood fashion, Owen accidentally vaporizes Ianto and Tosh. (Well, kind of.) And a story with a premise like that has to go somewhere great. Sure enough: Tosh and Ianto find themselves lurking around the hub, able to communicate with each other yet unseen and unheard by their colleagues. It's good to have the focus on these two underused characters, and I can't argue too much with the last line.

Author's summary: A dog is for life, not just for Christmas.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's an adorable Sarah Jane Adventures story about what happens when Sarah has to write a magazine review about a robot dog. Of course, the dog isn't exactly up to K9's standards. Luke misinterprets a casual comment made by Sarah and takes matters into his own hands, which leads to a touching resolution. This fic is just sweet enough without being overly saccharine.

Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Donna

Recced because: This story is an amusing twist on the idea of a Ten/Donna relationship. In this case, Donna claims her main worry is that the aliens holding them prisoner will want her and the Doctor to have sex. It's refreshing to see the Doctor with a deflated ego from the thought that one of his companions might actually not be attracted to him. Best of all, Donna is the real star here, as she controls the situation from beginning to end.

Recced because: Rounding out the week, here's a beautifully angsty fic featuring one of my favorite pairings, Five/Turlough. Poor Turlough has jumped to conclusions and thinks he must serve a particular purpose to be allowed to stay aboard the TARDIS. The Doctor, of course, has no idea what Turlough's thinking. Author's summary: Depressed by his exile, the Doctor spends a few hours with the Master.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor/Delgado!Master
Warnings: PWP

Recced because: The slashy possibilities of Three/Master practically leap off the screen in their serials. Here, that dynamic is captured in a well paced fic. The Doctor, angsting about his exile on Earth, encounters the Master. He stops to have a talk, which turns into more. Why would the Doctor tolerate the Master's presence? Well, his reasoning is plausibly explained and so are the Master's motives. The dialogue is excellent and the ending is just about perfect.

Author's Summary: The Doctor does indeed get to settle down with the Master. And it all goes downhill from there.
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Simm!Master, Reinette (implied Ten/Reinette, implied Master/other)
Warnings: none

Recced because: Like Jack/Ianto fic, humorous Ten/Master recs have been lacking on this comm to date. Here's one of my favorites. The Master is still evil, but the Doctor very optimistically thinks he can keep him under control. By the way, these two are married. Think that'll help the Doctor in his efforts? Probably not. After all, he is dealing with the Master here. This is a hilarious story with some surprises thrown in.

(Note: Although it's marked as not being complete, this part stands fine on its own and the author says in her LJ that she is unlikely to ever write more.)

Author's Summary: When the Doctor goes out for a walk and comes back drunk, Adric has to put him to bed. Doctor/Adric slash.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor/Adric, Nyssa, Tegan
Warnings: none

Recced because: While I very much expect almost all potential readers to skip right past this recommendation the second they see the pairing, this story is well written and deserves a mention. I'm not at all enthusiastic about the idea of Five/Adric, yet I liked what the author did here. Empress of the Eclipse wrote a good balance of humor and angst and a fine portrayal of Adric. The fic is Five/Adric, but it's also believable Five/Adric.

Recced because: I already recced a "diary fic" this week, but I also like this one. It has a different pairing than the other story: Ianto/Jack, which has been sorely underrepresented on this comm so far. Maybe someone else will recommend serious Ianto/Jack; I'm going with crack. Author's Summary: Sarah isn’t used to feeling alone... Or rather, she isn’t used to noticing it.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/f, the Brigadier, Benton, the Third Doctor
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's a beautiful character study of Sarah, set during Planet of the Spiders. Complex and believable, this story really gets into her head. There happens to be a lot going on in there during this particular serial. The author describes her fic as "femslash, broadly defined" without being more specific (there's good reason for this ambiguity) and after reading it, you'll probably view Planet of the Spiders in even just a slightly different way.

Characters/Pairings: Delgado!Master/Turlough
Warnings: none

Recced because: The idea of Turlough keeping a diary is one of the greatest things ever. And that's exactly what he does here. It's at the Doctor's urging, of course, since Turlough has initial reservations about setting his thoughts down on paper. Once he gets started, though, he finds a favorite topic: his attraction to the Master, which even Turlough himself thinks is disturbing, considering that the Master is evil. The solution? Turlough decides to seek out an earlier, presumably less insane, regeneration of the Master! This story is one of the funniest things I've read in ages and the characterization of Turlough is excellent.

Story: End of Devils
Author: Sheila Adamson
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Ben and Polly take a short break in the picturesque village of Devil's End.
Characters/Pairings: Ben/Polly, the Master
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's always interesting to look at the lives of companions after they've stopped travelling with the Doctor. In this case, Ben and Polly are married and living pretty ordinary (in fact, rather boring) lives. When they go on holiday in a village called Devil's End, though, all that could change, because the Master is lurking around. Certain elements of this charming story make more sense if you've seen the Third Doctor serial The Daemons (if you haven't, the Daemons summary at Wikipedia should help), but the best bits lie in the interaction between Ben and Polly, and the little details about their lives. Also, the name they gave their son? The perfect touch.

Recced because: It's about the awesomeness of Zoe. At the end of the Second Doctor era, she was supposed to have her memory wiped and be returned to her own timeline. Well, things don't quite work out the way the Time Lords wanted. Zoe keeps noticing little things about herself that aren't quite right, like the length of her fingernails and the new filling in her tooth. She soon figures out that she's lost two years of her life, and then the fun really begins. Even without knowing all the rules of the "game," she manages to outsmart the Time Lords. Seeing that it's clever, resourceful Zoe, I believed she could do it.

Rating: not given at Teaspoon, but at ff.net it's Teen.
Author's summary: The Doctor's plan to involve his companions in an interesting project leads them all into a perilous situation that will prove to be a test of each one's personal strengths.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, Tegan
Warnings: none

Recced because: I love Fifth Doctor adventure fics, and Patrice has written several excellent ones. All are well worth reading, but I settled on this particular one because it has especially good characterization of Adric. While exploring a seemingly peaceful planet, Adric quickly manages to become separated from the others and finds himself in a dangerous situation. Of course, Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan don't fare very much better during their search for him, so all four have their problems. The alien world is interesting and the resolution is believable, making this story a highly satisfying read.

Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie, Zoe
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's cute and sweet, in the best possible way. First there are looks at Jamie, Zoe, and the Doctor as individuals, where each character considers an issue unique to his or her situation. Then there's group interaction that shows what an incredible team these three make. No mortal danger or running for their lives; just nice character work. And if you ever wondered where the Doctor learned Venusian aikido, here's your answer. After reading this story, my first impulse was to go and watch the Second Doctor serials I haven't yet seen.

Recced because: Like I was going to make it through an entire week of reccing without singling out a Seventh Doctor story! I remembered initially finding this vignette on LJ, and was very pleased to see that it had been posted to Teaspoon as well so I could use it. The title is taken from the Tenth Doctor's famous line in School Reunion. Here it's applied to the Seven/Ace relationship, in a completely believable manner. The result is a bittersweet gem about the passage of time and the little defining moments along the way. I love all of it, including the ending. Even though it kind of broke my heart.

Author's summary: Peri marries an alien and deals with wedding-night expectations.
Characters: Sixth Doctor, Peri
Warnings: none

Recced because: It's hilarious. Sometimes you just want to read something fun. First, though, despite the summary, this story is gen. Also, the Doctor and Peri don't really get married. Not exactly, anyway. What happens is that Peri commits a cultural faux pas, and she and the Doctor end up as "guests" of the planet's high priest, who has certain expectations of them. Peri and the Doctor, less than pleased with the situation, plot an escape. There's a lot of amusing banter along the way, plus some sweet bonding between Six and Peri. When well written, they make a great team.

Recced because: Really good character studies of the pre-series First Doctor are pretty thin on the ground. So when I found this one, it nearly jumped off the page at me. In about a thousand evocative words, the author takes us from the day the Doctor first meets his wife to the day he leaves Gallifrey. Readers might debate how well (or if) various plot elements fit in with their version of canon, but the use of language is lovely and the heartwarming final exchange with Susan made this story for me.
