Title: Five Phone Calls the Doctor Never Received
Author: the_seventh_l
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2749
Author's Summary: He knew buying a mobile was a mistake. Five phone calls across the years that make up the Sixth Doctor's life.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, Frobisher, Peri Brown, Mel Bush, Others
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a refreshingly original take on the old "five things" format, drawing on bits and pieces of the Sixth Doctor's era and quietly solving the little mysteries that arise. It's also one of those rare fics that can bring in characters from other fandoms without a jolt - and despite all these disparate elements, the author draws them together nicely with the running motif of the phone itself. A fun, fascinating, and surprisingly poignant look at the Sixth Doctor's era.

Title: Dinner for Two
Author: uktechgirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3668
Author's Summary: 'And this, Jamie, is an oyster.' ‘You’ll not fool me, Doctor. That’s a rock, and I’m not eating it.’ The Second Doctor introduces Jamie to French cuisine. Their waiter, Guillaume, may never be the same again.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings: None

Recced because: Fic for the Second Doctor's era is regrettably rare, so any and all gems like this one should be savoured! The author makes a fine French restaurant seem as bizarre and unfathomable to our heroes as any alien planet - hilarity results, of course, but there's a really lovely thread of characterisation running throughout the story. uktechgirl writes both characters flawlessly, and the result is an extremely entertaining read!

Title: Long Way for a Shortcut
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1983
Author's Summary: I’m a human being with the brain of a Time Lord and he’s a Time Lord trapped in a human body. Which isn’t nearly as kinky as it sounds.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: In keeping with the other amusing recs this Friday, it's hilarious! Absolutely, positively hilarious. And somewhere in the midst of all this hilarity, there are some excellent little insights about our heroes.

Warning: fic contains spoilers for the series finale. )

Title: Red Tape
Author: Lydia Hunter
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 330
Author's Summary: Ever wondered about the red tape and paperwork hassle involved when the Doctor became an official part of UNIT?
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Benton
Warnings: None

Recced because: Having the Third Doctor exiled to Earth raises all sorts of logistical problems, and this fic brings out the absurdity that comes hand-in-hand with trying to tie the Doctor to any sort of bureaucratic organisation. And, of course, Benton shines in this fic, which is always a plus! A great little glimpse at the humourous side of this era.

Story: Clyde Langer: Man from Mars
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,587
Author's Summary: The year was 2015. Clyde Langer had a degree in Economics and Management. He needed a job. Something with aliens would work just fine.
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer/Luke Smith, Maria Jackson, Harry Sullivan/Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith/John Benton, Emily Chaudry/Francis Currie
Warnings: None

Recced because: For one thing, there is not nearly enough fanfiction that features the characters from The Sarah Jane Adventures, and there is not nearly enough fanfiction that features the characters from Big Finish's UNIT audios, and there is not nearly enough fanfiction that features characters from both, and draws on Doctor Who's long history with such precision and excellent characterisation and makes it all so fun. Clyde Langer's future spells itself out here, with the tongue-in-cheek humour and occasional moments of real profundity that suit him so well.

Story: Ozymandias in Hell
Author: ponygirl
Rating: None given (Teen seems a safe bet)
Author's Summary: Written for the "Old Clichés Made New" fic challenge on Livejournal. Martha learns about a side of the Doctor she hasn't seen before. Well, make that nine sides, actually.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor
Warnings: None
Word Count: 7,881

Recced because: Ponygirl has an amazing gift for storytelling, and the tense but careful pacing of a longer story showcases this brilliantly. Her characterisation of each of the Doctors is flawless, but it's her interpretation of Martha that steals the show - even the most contradictory facets of her character come together for her terrifying and wonderful exploration of the Doctor's mind, of the Time War, and of everything that came after. While this may seem like a been-there-done-that scenario, the author admirably accomplishes the "Made New" part of the challenge, and the fic as a whole feels beautifully mysterious and different and unknown, and, more than that, it feels real and true to each character.

Story: A Perfect Place
Author: rallalon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4321
Author's Summary: Chan, she loves him, tho.
Characters/Pairings: Chantho/Yana
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's rare to find fic about either of these two, and rarer still to find one that fits so seamlessly with canon. The setting is simple enough - Chantho and Professor Yana in the buildup to Utopia, with all the wonderful absurdities that arise when you place two alien cultures against the backdrop of the end of the universe. From the initial, tentative interactions to all the little misunderstandings that follow, the author builds up a wonderfully tense feeling of desperation even as the titular perfect place draws nearer.
