Story: The Renegade Tourbus
Author: Neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1809
Author's Summary: “Matrix archives: mailing list section. Fragments from the 'Gallifreyan Expatriate Circular', commonly referred to as the 'GEC'.”
Characters: Iris Wildthyme, Romana II, The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (5th), The War Chief, Drax, The Master (Ainley), The Meddling Monk, The Rani
Pairings: a touch of Doctor/Master, but it’s comedic (and might, if we believe the Doctor, be a Trolling Turlough—a Trollough?) and doesn’t actually get to the warned-for Explicit (Chat) Sex: this is an ensemble piece uber alles
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing
Recced because:

All the renegades have a mailing list, which Iris Wildthyme trolls. How many renegades? “To answer your question (more for the benefit of others interested) there are currently nine _official_ members of the list, of which only five are usually active. The other four are grandfathered from the original list created by Omega and distributed from the anti-matter universe.

Yes, before you ask, we do still distribute to all known universes. This is very difficult, technically speaking, and is also why I am moderator and not, for instance, Drax.” ←The Rani moderates. This fic spans several early Doctors’ worth of canon, and is fun for Three’s breezy email-voice alone.

“To: GEC list
From: morbius.brain.of
Subject: please remove

I, Morbius, am returned from the grave! And all I see in my inbox is spam from this list. I no longer wish to receive messages.

To: GEC list
From: romana.dvoratre.lundar
Subject: re: please remove

Could you take me off here too, please? I think the Doctor added me without my permission.

Story: Nonsense All Compact (The Community Theatre Remix)
Author: Neveralarch
Rating: All-Ages
Word Count: 12644
Author's Summary: “Braxiatel directs amateur community theatre in the small village of Gallifrey. Romana is the Council Leader in Gallifrey, and uses theatre as a political distraction. Eventually they hold hands. (Mundane AU of Gallifrey.)”
Characters: Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), Andred, K9, cameos from Eight’s companions
Pairings: Romana II/Brax, Leela/Narvin, Leela/Andred
Warnings: None
Recced because:

This is a mundane AU remix of Aralias’s excellent The Importance of Being On Stage, which is also about Brax having to rustle the denizens of Gallifrey into amateur dramatics and well worth a read. Neveralarch’s version is funny (how could anything about Gallifrey as a middle England town and Brax being dragooned into running its am-dram fail to be funny?) and lovely, with great world-building that uses all kinds of canon well and doesn’t leave you feeling left out if you don’t remember who Samson and Gemma are (don’t worry, the Doctor doesn’t remember who they are either). It’s an ensemble fic before it’s anything else, though its shippy elements are variously satisfying and amusing.

I think you’d even dig this story if you didn’t know the Gallifrey audios and had only a passing familiarity with Big Finish. Brax is the Doctor’s brother and he has a morally-dubious art collection and also does grandiose political machinations back on the Time Lord ranch and pines after Romana and nothing ever works out for him—there, you’re good to go, enjoy.

Story: A Fleeting Passion for Facial Hair
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1564
Author's Summary: A very serious multi-era fic about the Master's beards.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Master (Ainley), The Master (Delgado), The Master (Other)
Warnings: Humor

Recced because: Okay, this is sheer Crack. I mean, I read this and I laughed so hard, I think I sprained my ribs. Sadly the author has never acknowledged the bill for that, but she did post this at Teaspoon, just so I could rec it for you here. *Beams*

This is a Very Serious observation about the Master and his Beardiness (and sometimes lack thereof) throughout his own regenerations. His pursuit of the Perfect Facial 'Do - and the Doctor's mixed (and heartfelt) reactions throughout. Even if you have never seen Classic Who , I'm sure this will still be a laugh. I know at the very least, you might've seen pictures of the Master and his various attempts to decorate his chin with luxurious, artistic (and under-appreciated) styles that can only be admired by the true believers in the masterful pun intended expression of...of hair on one's face. But if you still need convincing -

I might just have a modest sample beneath the cut )

Of course, the rest can be found at the link above. Please enjoy! And let her know how much you did!

I'm really terrible with posting this time round. Apologies for that.

Story Times Such as These
Author Neveralarch
Rating teen
Word Count 4755
author's summary The Time War is too large and complex and confusing to be viewed in generalities. Four personal stories from the War.
characters/pairings Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Narvin, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Other)
warnings None

recced because As is clear from my previous reccing spree, I am a huge fan of the Time War. The concepts fascinates me, and I like that we do not know for sure what exactly happened. It's perfect for angst, usually involves Romana and the Doctor being awesome, and gets to be quite dark and gruesome. See, there is no downside to the Time War! (aside from the fact that (spoiler) everyone dies, of course).

This story has all things mentioned, but is written with an unusual underlying sense of dread and despair. I simultaneously hated and loved reading it for exactly that reason. It's dark (pitch black in fact), but somehow totally irresistible. There is something about the writing which drew me in and made me read until the end, despite the fact that the characters I love so much made me feel wrong. Their actions feel alien, yet I can see them behaving in exactly that way when pushed to the edge and over it. It is not an enjoyable read, but by Rassilon is it a good one.

Story: Prey of the Cheetahs
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5869
Author’s Summary: There are strange things happening at Cambridge, and they seem to be connected with the appearance of a black cat. (A Three-era retelling of Survival.)
Characters/Pairings: Three/Delgado!Master (also Three/Cheetah!Delgado!Master); the Brigadier, Jo Grant, Liz Shaw, and Sergeant Benton
Warnings: none

Recced because: Do you like cats? Do you enjoy this pairing? Then you, like I, probably spent the entirety of Survival with your jaw unhinged at the sheer amount of slash on the screen. I love the fandom trend of rewriting Survival with different Doctors and Masters, and this Three-era retelling shines, with well-written dialogue and characterization. For bonus points, it showcases the old-school UNIT crew, even to the point of including both Liz AND Jo. It’s just a shame there will never be a televised episode in which Delgado gets to rub up against Pertwee like an oversized cat.

Thank you very much for having me. Please give some of my obscure canon choices a chance. It may lead you down the road to a side of Who fandom you've not considered that is actually brilliant.

Today, I was planning on reccing a completely different Neveralarch story, and then I saw this one right below the moderately sensible choice I'd been planning, and I thought 'nobody knows what Gallifrey is or wants Age of Sail AUs of it', but... well, the other choice was more Doctor/Master and probably not as brilliant as this. So-

Story: The Very Model
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 10070
Author's Summary: Being the tale of how Admiral Romana kept her job, how Rear-Admiral Braxiatel fought off the empire's enemies, how Leela of the Sevateem gained an audience with the Admirality, and how Captain Narvin was irritated by just about everyone. (A Gallifrey/Age of Sail fusion, where most of the characters are still Time Lords, even though that doesn't make much sense when they're on wooden ships.)
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Leela, Braxiatel, Narvin, K-9s, and various other Gallifrey people who aren't on Teaspoon

Recced because: Reasons I love this fic that hopefully apply to more people who aren't me:

a) Age of Sail is a particular vice of mine. If you are fond of this genre, but haven't heard Gallifrey - give it a try.
b) I particularly like Age of Sail fics in which Romana is a headstrong admiral who beats people up with buckets, and Leela is a pirate. (A small category, alas). Other characters are also treated very well - K-9 is Age of Sail-ified most brilliantly, and Brax is sort of trying to take over the navy and Narvin is trying to play by the rules and is so angry that nobody else will.
b2) It is a true ensemble fic.
c) The narrative voice is consistently hilarious. And so is the dialogue.
d) For all that it is an Age of Sail AU, it is also a brilliant Gallifrey-type plot that you can actually get wrapped up in. Do you like intrigue and backstabbing? Yes. Great. Read this fic.

Story: Those People Down in Marketing

Summary: An office AU, where the Master is a programmer and the Doctor is in marketing, and they can't stand each other. Obviously.
Rating: PG

Characters: The Sixth Doctor, The Master (Ainley), Mel, Evelyn
Pairing: Sixth Doctor/The Master (Ainley)

Why recced: Brilliant AU! The Sixth Doctor is very in-character and Mel is adorable as the Master’s best friend. Great dialogue, clever references to canon, and everything is just really cute. A very fun fic!

Hello Calufrax! I'm [personal profile] dbskyler. Here are some more of my favorite stories from the Teaspoon, which I am very excited to rec to you!

Story: Gearbox (The Won't Miss a Piece Remix)
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6103
Author's Summary: “How does the TARDIS work?” asks Ace.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Seventh Doctor, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Zoe Herriot, Second Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Third Doctor, Romana II, Fourth Doctor, Erimem, Fifth Doctor, Melanie Bush, Sixth Doctor, Hex Schofield.
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's a work of brilliance, and I really mean that. The structure of it -- interspersing scenes between the Seventh Doctor and Ace with scenes between earlier Doctors and their companions -- is very well done, and the writing is top-notch, but all of that is almost irrelevant once you come to realize the central conceit of the fic, which is truly a thing of marvelous beauty. If you don't know all the Doctors or companions involved, don't worry, because this is a fic where knowing the characters isn't important (I don't know them all either). All you really need to know about is the TARDIS -- and you might just pick up a new piece of fanon by the end.

Hello! Back again for my third reccing slot, and very happy to continue the fine tradition of Calufrax. I'm the one who recs an absurd amount of Four/Master - or did last time. I shall try not to do that so much this time. Right! So, here is a story-

Oh.

Wait.

Story: Operator, Operator
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 6107
Author's Summary: The Master works as a phone sex operator in order to kick-start his political career. That's it, really.
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Master, One through Ten/Simm!Master
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: With such a prompt this fic could have been a disaster. In neveralarch's hands it becomes a thing of lightness and grace, deceptively funny (so funny - biting down on things so that nobody asks what the hell is so funny!funny) and actually dark and sad - while still being funny. Essentially, what I'm saying is, this fic is like Simm!Master distilled into a fic about the Doctor's outlandish sexual practices. And that it's hilarious. Please read it, even if you don't ship it.

Story: The Caged Cinema
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3718
Author's Summary: The Doctor plays mechanic
Characters/Pairings: Webcast Ninth Doctor/Android Master
Warnings: BDSM, Explicit Sex
Recced because: Everything about the Doctor/Master dynamic is some kind of power play, but it's not often that the Doctor is overtly the one in control. This story starts off as a "game" of physical power and sensory deprivation kinks (blindfolding, a sort of breathplay if one considers the symbolism breathing holds for an android that doesn't really need it), with the sci-fi twist of a creator/created relationship. But at some point the tables turn, though at the end I'm not entirely sure it wasn't the Doctor's plan all along. It's hot, kinky, and a psychological character study all in one, for a Doctor/Master pairing that doesn't usually get a lot of attention.

*waves* Hello all! I’m Jane, and I’ll be your reccer this week. I’ve never met a corner of the Whoniverse I didn’t like, and this week’s recs will include stories set during Classic Who, New Who, and in the Big Finish Audio ‘verse. I’m particularly fascinated by the Time Lords as a species, so every rec this week will include at least one Time Lord or Time Lady other than the Doctor (though he’s in plenty of them too).

This first rec is set in the Gallifrey audio ‘verse. Let me just take a moment here to say to those who have not heard Gallifrey: Look at your life. Look at your choices. And then go forth immediately and listen, for lo, it is amazing.

Story: On Her Lady President’s Secret Service
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 13025
Author’s Summary: Narvin and Leela tracking down spies in the Citadel. And also fighting with people. And fighting with each other. And having discussions about CIA training methods. But they also track down spies.
Characters: Irving Braxiatel, Leela, Narvin, Other Character(s), Romana II, K-9 Mark I
Warnings: Explicit Violence
Recced because:

I’ll admit from the top that I am wildly biased where this story is concerned, because it’s got tons of Narvin in it, and Narvin is quite possibly my favorite character in the whole of the Whoniverse. But I think anybody who’s at all familiar with the Gallifrey audios is bound to enjoy this story just as much as I do, because it’s a solid piece of writing in every possible way: excellently plotted, perfectly characterized, with all the wit and dry humor that are so characteristic of the show itself. In addition, this fic is unusual for being set during Gallifrey’s first season, so not only does it have the ‘Torvald’ plotline to play with, it also serves as an excellent antidote to the shifting paradigms of season four, grounded back on the Gallifrey we knew, before wars, plagues or alternate universes. If I had to pick one single candidate for the classic Gallifrey fic, it would be On Her Lady President’s Secret Service.

Author's Summary: The Master never used to be the one that couldn't deal with reality. A post-Sympathy for the Devil story.
Characters/Pairings: Gatiss!Master, Colonel Brimmicombe-Wood
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic captures what I loved about Gatiss!Master. He's not completely desensitized to death and violence yet and has a tough time coping with life on Earth. I also love Colonel Wood (aka David Tennant) in any form :D

Next up is one of my favorite 'Scream of the Shalka' fics :)

Story: Negotiation
Author: Neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 9297
Author's Summary: The Doctor, the Master, Alison, and a miserable muddy war.
Characters/Pairings: Alison Cheney, Reg!Doctor/Shalka!Master
Warnings: None

Recced because: If there had been a continuation of Reg!Nine's series this would've made a perfect episode. Allison acts like a proper companion, the Doctor and Master argue like a married couple and the Master plots behind the Doctor's back to save him from himself. The character's voices are so spot on that I could easily hear Derek Jacobi's voice when the Master spoke.

It's my last rec of the week. Thanks for coming along with me and letting me tell you guys about my favorite fics once again. This one just went up yesterday but I've loved it ever since I read it on lj and when I saw it on the "most recent" update list it was like a present to make my last recc day all that much easier.

Story: Comon Issues in Child Care
Author: neveralarch
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4873
Author's Summary: From a prompt by aralias: "Some sort of Gallifrey babyfic - yes, that's what's happening here." Set in a idyllic future of the canon, where both the K-9s are there and also Elbon is not a zombie.
Characters: Irving Braxiatel, K-9, Leela, Narvin, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Romana II, Romana II, The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: None

Recc'ed because: Gallifreyans can handle all of the machinations and political manouverings from millennia-old society, but add one tiny humanoid baby and...well. I am not all that familiar with the Gallifrey chronicles but loved all of the characters that show up here and how they all deal differently with the little baby that the Eighth Doctor drops in their laps. This really is a delight of a fun story, told in a round robin format as the baby changes hands, and the characterizations are a peach.

Story: The Amazon
Author: neveralarch
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 9417
Author's Summary: Jo made a poor choice in husbands, the Master made a poor choice in building materials, and the Doctor's gone off in a scarf.
Characters/Pairings: Jo, Delgado!Master/Four
Warnings: Alternate Universe

Recced because: So many wonderful Neverlarch fics to choose from, and really I recommend you read all of them (particularly 'On Her Lady President's Secret Service'), but 'The Amazon' is my most favourite.

More so than any other Master and Companion, Delgado and Jo had an almost amicable relationship. Some of my favourite scenes from the third Doctor's era are between these two characters, but there's far too little (except in the glorious 'Frontier in Space'), but now there's this fic, and it's so joyful and joy-inspiring. The fic's conceit is that Jo ends up as the Master's companion some time post 'Green Death'. They don't get on all that badly, as he's always quite liked her. She's really competent in all the ways Jo was competent in the show (escapology! getting information!) while still being ditzy and Jo-like, but she does keep trying to tell him that he should sort out his relationship with the Doctor (in much the same way that she tried to tell the Doctor this in 'Frontier'), which the Master does not appreciate at all, because he doesn't have a relationship with the Doctor - what's more, doesn't want one! (Jo eye rolls.)

It then proceeds through the events of 'Deadly Assassin' (another v good serial), but because the Master has Jo there to point out his mistakes and irritate him, things take a different turn. This is a very clever, very funny story (the Master's POV, often in direct opposition to his dialouge) about an unlikely friendship, the difficulties of being Jo Grant, and what happens when the Doctor and the Master finally listen to her advice.

Excerpt:
"You!" said the Doctor once he was close enough to be heard without shouting. "I should have known."

"Yes, my dear Doctor, me." The Master threw his cloak off altogether and swung the staser pistol concealed under it to point at Jo. "And I've got one of your abandoned companions with me as well."

"Jo? Jo, what are you doing with him?" The Doctor stepped forward into the sudden chaos of people running away from the gun, but the Master stopped him with a shake of the head.

"No, keep back. I'm a little over-tired, and you wouldn't want to make me act rashly."

"So this was your plan all along," said Jo. "Master, I thought we were friends! You took me shopping!"
