Well, it feels like returning to an internet home from home, being back here on [livejournal.com profile] calufrax for another reccing stint. Long may it continue, and I would urge any of you reading this who haven't already to sign up to have a go yourselves. It's pretty fun indeed, you know!

And we open with a consideration of this little gem:

Story: A Gentleman Can Have it All
Author: Sakura Tsukikage
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4,182
Author's Summary: The Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria discover the perks and drawbacks of gentlemanly behavior in 19th century Cardiff. And there's some time-traveling shenanigans thrown in.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, The Doctor (2nd), Victoria Waterfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: I think we can all agree that there isn't anything like enough top-notch Two fic. Even if every fan in fandom devoted the rest of their fanfictional careers to writing top-notch Two fic, there still wouldn't be enough. Like the era of Who that inspires it, when Two fic is good - as this most certainly is - it is a unique pleasure to behold. Just like all of the other eras in their different ways, I suppose. That's just what it's like living the dream in the greatest fandom of them all...

Here, the Doctor and his companions Jamie and Victoria go undercover, more or less, in order to interact with a Victorian gentleman and get to the bottom of some space/time-related shenanigans involving the sinister interloper Mr. Johns. Well, at least the Doctor and Victoria go undercover; Jamie can't be persuaded, understandably, to part with his very fetching kilt. Much teasing, naturally, ensues at the very idea of the cosmic hobo attempting to smarten up his appearance. And then the action starts.

The thing I really like about this fic is the way it captures the main characters and their deceptively subtle and distinctive interpersonal relationships. All of the little interactions, the rhythms of the dialogue and the characters' attitudes towards each other are absolutely spot-on, not in the slightly heightened way common in a lot of fanfic, but the way they actually are on screen together. There's an argument to be made that most of us, as fans, only think we know Two and his character, based on the somewhat exaggerated versions portrayed in the multi-Doctor stories Troughton guest-starred in so magnificently during the 70s and 80s, and I think those latter-day performances certainly inform a lot of fic. Not this one, though; this is the real deal. Old school Two and two of his most memorable companions on fine form. Bask in it.

This is one of only two fics by this author on the Teaspoon, both of them lovely pitch-perfect Two fics, and I am glad to have recced both now on the comm. As I usually do, I urge you - go over there and read this and leave some nice words for the author.

Story: the stars in my sky
Author: countingstars
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,505
Author's Summary: And one day, the stars will call her home.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield, Jamie McCrimmon, Twelfth Doctor, Second Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a very heartfelt piece that centers around Victoria through time, especially her feelings after she leaves the TARDIS and what happens to her. Having the Doctor come back to visit her toward the end was a lovely surprise, and provided a nice bit of closure for her. I give kudos to the author for portraying Victoria so perfectly.

Hello, again! I'm your reccer for the next couple of weeks.
I hope you enjoy the stories I share.

Story: a constellation of us
Author: countingstars
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1,650
Author's Summary: And if he could, he'd give every star her name.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, The Doctor (2nd), Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Herriot, Jamie/Victoria
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a lovely, fluffy little piece that looks into Jamie's feelings for Victoria as well as touch upon their adorable interactions. A very romantic little story that weaves in missing scenes up until Victoria leaves and Jamie has to deal with missing and yearning for her. I feel like this is exactly the kind of closure these characters deserve, no matter how bittersweet. A definite overlooked story that should have more reviews.

Author: Penny
Rating: All ages
Word Count:  2234
Author's Summary: Her eyes were so big and bright, and he almost never saw her this happy – he couldn’t say no, not when Victoria made that face. Jamie, Victoria, a Ferris Wheel and an embarrassing fear of heights. (Jamie/Victoria Fluff)
Characters/Pairings:  The Doctor (2nd),  Jamie McCrimmon/Victoria Waterfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: Since the last rec was pretty sad, this one is pure cute fluff.  The mannerisms and dialogue fit them well and it's overall a fun read.

Story: The Fun of the Fair
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 584
Author's Summary: Victoria visits a funfair with Jamie, and realises it's not the first time she's been there.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie/Victoria
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I love this early period of the Second Doctor's era, and even more so Jamie and Victoria's interaction. I felt chemistry there, and when I found this fic I was ECSTATIC. I must have read this twenty times and more. It's fluffy, these two are just too sweet, and there's a great memory from Victoria and an impulsive move Jamie makes to calm her. This fic just gives me such happy feels for sure.

Author: infiniteviking
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 100
Author's Summary: History is a grim business, and Victoria is getting fed up.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield, Second Doctor
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Two, Victoria, history, time travel and hope – it’s one of those drabbles that prove how much 100 words can be worth and in many ways it’s also a quiet stating of the series’ ethos.

Story: Four Things Jamie Learned about Time (and Travelling in it)
Author: Doctor Tam
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 517
Author's Summary: As the title says. "Jamie frowned at his watch, then shrugged. Maybe he’d get the Doctor to explain in later."
Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, Second Doctor, Polly Wright, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot, Ben Jackson
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Another, much earlier companion, trying to make sense of travelling with the Doctor – this time Jamie, learning about time itself. Despite the brevity, this fic gets a lot into each of its sweet and perfectly-characterised snapshots of Jamie’s days aboard the TARDIS and the strangeness, pleasures - and friendships - they bring.

Story: Blanket Castle; or, The Uncaffeinated Ones
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=45715
Author: whatthefoucault
Rating: G
Word Count: 1553
Author's Summary: Jamie sleeps in. Mayhem ensues.
Characters: Second Doctor, Jamie, Victoria
Pairings: Second Doctor/Jamie
Warnings: None
Recced because: Sweet, simple, fluff that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. True to the characters, if Jamie and the Doctor ever did get together this is probably how it happened.
Excerpt: “Jamie was certain that there were rules where he came from, rules certainly against things like kissing strange centuries-old men from other worlds; but somehow, out in this little blue box spiraling into the unknown, with all of time and space to call their home, those rules — Scotland itself, perhaps even the earth — seemed so tiny in the grand scheme of life as to make those rules seem like nothing more than a distant memory, and certainly nothing worth paying any regard.”

Story: Turn Your Back
Author: Singe
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 21943
Author's Summary: The Eleventh Doctor had a simple philosophy about public nudity. "If it embarrasses you, turn your back." Hmmm, what about the other Doctors? Here are ten humorous vignettes with a central theme of nakie-ness.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1 through 10 and various companions (ETA for the intrepid calufrax tagger: Susan, Ian, Barbara, Victoria, Jamie, Liz Shaw, Brigadier, Mike Yates, John Benton, Sarah Jane, Adric, Tegan, Nyssa, Melanie Bush, Ace, Jo Grant, Martha Jones)
Warnings: Swearing
Recced because: Honestly, how can you pass up a story with that summary? Do you need more? Okay, it's ten stories that go effortlessly from era to era, that are quirky and imaginative and funny and outlandish. They are also well-written and fun, inducing a little bit of ear reddening blushes at times, but also exploring concepts of friendship, acceptance, vulnerability, and the tendency of the Doctor to gravitate to gift shops in more ways than one. And well, if it's not your cuppa you can always turn your back...

Small excerpt (chapter 7) )

Rec: Scream

Sep. 7th, 2011 12:02 pm
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Metaltron here again! For day three of my domination of all things fiction on here we’re zipping back to the Troughton era for a nice little ficlet on one of my favourite undervalued Doctor Who Companions.

Story: Scream
Author: alouzon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1181
Author's Summary: Victoria screams a lot. But we already know that.
Characters/Pairings: 2nd Doctor, Jamie/Victoria
Warnings: None

Recced because: I often like to sing the praises of un-beloved companions like Victoria, and it seems the case that one criticism of her character by others can be her tendency to scream blue murder. Here though alouzon writes about that very supposed in-perfection and its history in Victoria’s life even before meeting the Doctor, the very fact that anyone would scream at the sort of things she runs into with the Doctor in the TARDIS, and brings it all down to a sweet little quiet moment of romance for her and Jamie. I do love Zoe with Jamie in the series but it is my opinion that Jamie and Victoria are quite the perfect match – the brave and protective highlander and his English lass with a determined resolve behind that seemingly timid, flighty facade.

I thought we could all use something light-hearted today, and slightly whimsical. Fortunately I have just the fic:

Story: One Long Night
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1538
Author's Summary: The Doctor attempts to solve a problem of storage space. Complications ensue.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's the Second Doctor, with Jamie and Victoria! Yes, that's practically reason enough. But there's more. The Doctor goes shopping! There's IKEA furniture! And best of all, there's a wonderful tie-in with a piece of Ninth Doctor canon, and the origin of a tool that makes Doctor Who history. Read and enjoy.

To tempt you. )

Story: Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
Author: Amy Wolf
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6792
Author's Summary: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side."
Characters/Pairings: Doctors 1-13, Susan, Victoria, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Tegan, Peri, Ace, Grace, Jackie, Martha, Original Companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: "I'm half-human, on my mother's side." That one little line from the TVM is arguably the most hated piece of dialogue in the history of the show. But what if it were true? This fic explores what that might mean for the Doctor and his relationships with humans, using the device of showing thirteen different conversations where thirteen Doctors touch upon -- or just manage to avoid touching upon -- the subject. It's a skillful exploration, dripping with nicely drawn characterizations, and the ending is wonderful.

Well, this is my final rec for the week.  I hope you have enjoyed at least some of my choices.  Goodbye until the next time!

Story: Reflection

Author: Clare

Rating: All ages

Word Count: 1502

Author's Summary: In "The Tomb Of The Cybermen", the Doctor asked Jamie to help Victoria find some clothes more suited to her new life as a member of the TARDIS crew.  What happened between then and when we next see her?

Characters/Pairings: Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield

Warnings: None

Recced because:

I was looking for a Second Doctor story to rec, because one of the biggest travesties of the Whoniverse is that so many of his episodes are lost.   Even though the Doctor isn't really present in this story, it is too interesting to not get more love.   Clare uses choosing more appropriate clothing as a metaphor for Victoria saying goodbye to her old life and moving on.  Plus, Jamie helping a young woman with her corset? Priceless.

Hail & well met; I'm [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook , known as vvj5 on Teaspoon and I'll be your reccer for this week. I'm very fond of all the Doctors, so there should be a fair spread of eras across the week.

Story: Jamie’s Angels in: Univited
Author: johne
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4811
Author's Summary: Everyone else is at the Christmas lunch. Donna's in the office on her own — at least, until a rather dubious plumber shows up.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield, Zoe Heriot, Gia Kelly, Isobel Watkins
Warnings: None.

Recced because: If I sneak it in right now, under cover of snow, no one will notice it’s technically a Christmas story?

Donna is left alone to mind the office and encounters the Second Doctor and Jamie in the guise of plumbers; what’s more there seem to be a lot of other strangers about, up to no good. This is a great comic fic to start off the week with a smile. Johne’s idea of the mythical ‘Season 6B’ is certainly much more fun than any others I’ve seen. The Sixties characters cause trouble and Donna stands no nonsense and sets the world to rights, as ever. If you’ve got the January blues, this fic is just the ticket to cheer you up.

Title: Unnecessary Vector.
Author: Primsong.
Characters/Pairings: 2nd Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Victoria Waterfield.
Rating: All ages.
Warnings: None.
Word Count: 9857.
Summary: In which the Second Doctor, Jamie & Victoria find an old acquaintance meddling once again.

Recced Because: It's a delight to read. This fic features a timelord I won't name specifically, but whose name rhymes with 'Nettling Skunk.' He's completely lovely in a slightly defective way. My experience of the Second Doctor's era is very thin, and I haven't seen The Time Meddler but I don't think that these facts have impaired my enjoyment of this story at all. The characters sell this story. Nothing of great moment happens; it's a fun, character-driven read.

Last rec of the week. I just wanted to say thanks to my fellow reccer, [livejournal.com profile] clocketpatch, and to all the people who left comments for the stories and for the recs. It was a blast!

And for my last rec, another short, light-hearted story.

Story: Vital Equipment
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 650
Author's Summary: Some things are more vital than others.
Characters/Pairings: Two, Jamie, Victoria, not-yet-actually-the-Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Warnings: None

A fun little missing scene snippet from the Yeti era. Jamie and Victoria go on an unauthorized field trip for some important equipment.

Story: Snatches of an Old-Fashioned Coat
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1321
Author's Summary: A jumbled pile of old-school drabbles to share.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ben Jackson, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Jo Grant, John Benton, Mike Yates, Polly Wright, Romana II, Susan Foreman, The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), Victoria Waterfield
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is gorgeous collection of drabbles that really are drabbles. And there is something here for everyone. The author nails the voices and the eras, and the whole series will definitely put a smile on your face. Lovely, lovely stuff.

Story: A King is a King
Author: Sheila Adamson
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2565
Author's summary: The Jacobites: Wrong but Wromantic? An old-fashioned historical.
Characters/Pairings: Jamie, Victoria, Second Doctor
Warnings: None. You can't have spoilers for history!

Recced because: Not only is this an excellent example of a straight-up historical fic, but it's also a wonderful character study of Jamie. The Doctor, Victoria, and Jamie land in the town of Dumfries twenty years or so after the Jacobite rebellion and Jamie finds out that he's not the only one still bearing a grudge from those days. It comes complete with lovely little historical details too. Go read it.

I'll reccing a variety of fics this week, for the first rec I bring a Victoria story.

Story: Lessons
Author: alouzon
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 1326
Author's Summary: Just an ordinary evening on board the TARDIS.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield, Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings: None

Recced because: Victoria being the focus of fic is rare and alouzon writes her and the story around her so beautifully. Jamie is seamlessly woven into the story without overshadowing Victoria in the slightest but still gets a nice bit of the story. This is a little gem and defintely worth a read.

Here's my second long-story rec.

Story: Reflections
Author: [livejournal.com profile] vandonovan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 90,812
Author's Summary: Charged with saving the universe, can the Doctor overcome his own darkness to defeat the Daleks?
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor/Jamie, Victoria
Warnings: Dark AU

Recced because: I should probably start by explaining what this story is really about. Perhaps best summarized by one of it's reviewers, it's a story about a ""Dalek-blighted universe created by a Doctor corrupted by his own heart." This piece is an AU based off of the serial The Evil of the Daleks, which I think is one of the best stories in all of classic Who. Sadly, most of the episodes were burned in the BBC purge of misery and woe, but the storyline is worth suffering through reconstructions for. However, if you absolutely refuse to watch this serial, or simply can't for whatever reason, this recap provides all the information you would need to make sense of Reflections. And Van's story is definitely worth the effort.

Although it's pretty darn long by Who-fic standards, I think this one is absolutely worth the time commitment. Not only is it a brilliant Two/Jamie story, but the plot is completely engaging and seriously intense. Van has an excellent grasp of the characters, particularly the Second Doctor (he also does a great Victoria), and the result is that you really understand the motivations of his AU-self. You can believe that this dark version is someone the Second Doctor could have become. (And did I mention the sex is hot as hell?) But most of all, I love this story because it's just so damn angsty. The first time I read it I was hooked from chapter one through the very last line and yes, I cried.

a small taste from the first chapter... )

Story: Make Her Some Great Princess, Six Feet High
Author: livii
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 824
Author's Summary: "Write your own story then," Zoe says. "We're in a land of fiction. We can do anything we want."
Characters/Pairings: Zoe/Victoria
Warnings: none

Recced because: it's what the companion role is all about: characters who aren't just piggybacking onto a Time Lord's wacky fun, but learning how to live 'the adventure inside of them'. Zoe, with her superbrain and sparkly arse, already knows this - so when she runs into Victoria Waterfield in The Mind Robber's Land of Fiction, she's the ideal person to help her to write her own story. Sweet, funny, and - if it doesn't sound too absurd - empowering. And did I mention the sparkly arse?

There is an unfortunate lack of slash recs.

So... yay!  Slash! :D

Story: Obsession
Author: VanDonovan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 13160 (in six parts)
Author's Summary: Some obsessions are impossible to ignore.

This is a bit cliché but should be fun anyway. At least, I hope you'll like it. There certainly isn't enough Second Doctor fic, cliché or not. :)
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor/Jamie, Victoria
Warnings: Moderately graphic sex
Recced because:  VanDonovan is the high priest of Two/Jamie awesomeness, and this fic exemplifies why.  It is cliché fic at its best – it has a touch of aliens-made-them-do-it, but with a decent plot, spot-on characterization, and is absolutely adorable.  And really, lets be honest – the Doctor and Jamie are gay married in space.

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com
Story: Together, On This Same Earth
Author: Biichan ([livejournal.com profile] biichan)
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3891
Author's Summary: Once you've started traveling in time and space, things are never quite the same when you stop. Luckily, Victoria's new friend Martha understands this.
Characters/Pairings: Victoria Waterfield/Martha Jones, Tenth Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Jamie McCrimmon, Barbara Wright, Polly Wright
Warnings: None

Recced because: This story, set during Ten and Martha's 1969 sojourn in "Blink," is a powerful look at how travelling with the Doctor changes people's lives. I love stories about the afterlives of companions, and Victoria is an especially good subject for one, since she's chosen to stay in a time not her own. Biichan writes Victoria extremely well, keeping her of her time while showing her growth as she explores the new possibilities of the twentieth century.

Victoria/Martha is not a pairing I would ever have expected to work, but it absolutely does. Biichan develops the emotional connection between them slowly and plausibly. (By the way, although adult-rated, the story's one sex scene is not at all graphic. You should be able to enjoy this story even if explicit f/f slash isn't your thing.)

Another delightful aspect of the story is its reunion of several companions from the First and Second Doctor's eras. They reminisce, naturally, and it's all great fun for the reader. "Together, On This Same Earth" has its sober side, however. 1969 isn't paradise, and neither, as Victoria and Martha both know, is the future. One of the things I really like about this story is its attentiveness to to the darker side of Doctor Who, and especially the emotional toll that all those monsters and near-apocalypses might take on a companion. Which isn't to say it's depressing--the story really captures the enthusiasm for life which has always been an important part of Doctor Who.

I hope you like this story as much as I do; please don't forget to leave feedback for the author.
