Story: A Country of Smaller Wars
Author: levendis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 23,303
Author's Summary: Looking for home in all the wrong places: Narvin, professional voyeur and artful patriot, follows his ex-president, a con-man, and a savage through alternate universes only to find himself pretty much, but not quite, back where he started.
Characters/Pairings: Narvin/Romana II, Leela, Irving Braxiatel, K-9
Warnings: Swearing.

Recced because: This is one of the best Gallifrey fics I've ever read, and that's already a quality subset of Doctor Who fandom. This rec is later than I expected, because I got so caught up in rereading the story that I kind of forgot I was reading it for a reason.

A Country of Smaller Wars follows the plot of the Gallifrey series of audios from Coordinator Narvin's perspective, before moving beyond the latest audios and into speculation for the next ones. The fic takes knowledge of the Gallifrey series more or less for granted, but if you haven't listened to Gallifrey I really recommend the audios as well - personally, I think they're the best work Big Finish has done in the Doctor Who universe. And then you can come back and enjoy the fic!

If you've already listened to Gallifrey, then you should definitely read A Country of Smaller Wars. It has some fascinating conceits and a really great take on Narvin, and Narvin and Romana's relationship. Also, a fantastic Leela. I am running out of adjectives, here - you should just read this.

Story: Distances
Author: Levendis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4907
Author's Summary: Running fast to stand still, or the more things change the more they stay the same, or a series of vignettes about fish and possible nows.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Adric, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Nyssa, Peri Brown, Tegan Jovanka, The Daleks, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (2nd), The Doctor (3rd), The Doctor (4th), The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (6th), The Doctor (7th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None
Recced because: This is a fic about the Doctor - all of him, the essence of him. It is a series of vignettes, but they are unsorted and sort of higgledy-piggledy, consisting of briefly captured moments (or lifetimes), and most of the time it takes a few lines, or even paragraphs, before it’s possible to put a face, a time, a context, a ‘number’ to the Doctor in question. This disorientation works beautifully to highlight how he truly is the same man, how who he was/is/will be is all part of one continuous story. Some parts are sad, some happy; others funny, or profound, or deeply touching. But above all, this fic reminds me that the Doctor just is.

Story: Nervous Circuits
Author: levendis
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 999
Author's Summary: He's a 21st century human, she's an ancient Gallifreyan space-time ship. It would never work out, but that doesn't stop her trying.
Characters/Pairings: Rory/the TARDIS, Amy/Rory, Eleven
Warnings: noncon

Recced because: You don't exactly run across Rory/TARDIS every day, so of course I had to rec this, especially because it makes me laugh every single time I read it. The TARDIS' attempts to woo Rory are unsubtle at best, ranging from mysteriously appearing romantic restaurants to aphrodisiac chocolate bars and outright groping, while Rory can't seem to convince his prospective lover that he's just not that into her. The whole situation is wrong and slightly creepy, but it's also totally hilarious.

Hello and welcome to my recommendations. I haven't quite decided what they will all be, but I suspect lots with be Classic and BFA, if not all, and many will feature the Master, who is not only my favourite, but also under-represented, I think, at this fine institution.

Story: This Penguin For Hire
Author: Levendis
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3985
Author's Summary: When it comes to political espionage, Frobisher is really not your man.
Characters/Pairings: Frobisher, Six/Ainley!Master

Recced because: I'm not all that fond of first person fanfic, in general, but I am a sucker for the first person narrative of Frobisher, the shape-shifting, wise-talking detective penguin companion. And boy is it well done here: hilarious and in character. The Doctor is on similarly good form, fussing about problems with time and Frobisher getting his noble brow right. Meanwhile the Master is around and up to his old tricks, and there are many comedy misunderstandings as he meets Frobisher, then disguised as Six. Three great characters, very well represented, between whom the dialogue crackles, as you would expect in your Film Noir... pastiche. Very funny, very easy to read, and (particularly given that it was written for the prompt 'Six/Ainley/Frobisher: M-PREG') very clever.
(NB. The story contains no actual m-preg, but you should know that to fully appreciate the finer plot developments).

Excerpt: Some guys love complicated plans. Double crosses, triple crosses, the more elaborate the better. Me, I like my plans how I like my fish, simple and raw, and still wriggling. Maybe not that last part. But the point is, after all these years on the mean streets of the universe, I've seen enough elaborate schemes fall apart when the players forgot what was going on to know that straight forward is best. So when I tell you I went around looking like a clown, pretending to be a robot who was pretending to be a politician who was pretending to start a revolution, you can bet your last greasy mazuma it wasn't my idea. No, when I got shot at and molested and then forced to eat the last heir of "King Marfle", who wasn't actually a king, or even named Marfle, that was all the Doctor's fault.

Good morning, Calufrax!  I'm [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 , and I'll be your reccer this week!  To start off, here's one of my absolute favorite Eleven-era stories.

Story: Here shall John always stumble; there shall Jane's heart always break
Author: Levendis
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1974
Author's Summary: It's a January-December sort of thing.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/Amy
Warnings: none

Recced because: This story is also posted on LJ, where a lot of people have commented that it's the only Eleven/Amy they can believe.  I absolutely agree.  It's convincing, heartbreaking, and gorgeously, lyrically written.  Sensual, tasteful, and very in-tune with the characters.  I find myself returning to it again and again.
