merryghoul: River sonic screwdriver comics (amy & 11)
[personal profile] merryghoul
Story: Mother's Day
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1224
Author's Summary: It should've been her.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter/Jenny ("The Doctor's Daughter")
Warnings: None

Recced because: Alice and Jenny are a small rarepair, but they have a few fans, and every fic I've ever read with them seems plausible because of how abrupt their endings were in their shows (Torchwood: Children of Earth and "The Doctor's Daughter" episode of Doctor Who). They're also one of the few Whoniverse pairings I don't mind looking for babyfic for, in part because F/F babyfic in general is so rare to find. Here, Alice is tormented with thoughts about not being the surrogate mother for a princess as well as thoughts about losing her son. Jenny is there to ease Alice's pain. I love their interactions here--everything between these two makes me smile.

My apologies for a missed day; life got crazy. I hope you enjoy this particular story!

Story: What shall  I do with his favorite things ....
Author: [ profile] bobsyeruncle
Rating: all ages
Wordcount: 1,120
Author’s Summary: A friend of Steven's returns a borrowed toy. COE missing scene.
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Alice Carter
Recced because: I have a personal affection for [ profile] bobsyeruncle; she and  I share generational similarities, and a love of family, born, found, or made. I think the latter often shows up in her work.  I also love her work because it is  unsparing, whether in its clear-eyed insistence on seeing issues like race in the Whoniverse, or the difficulties of love and connection with people who have wronged us. It is also full of love. In this story, strongly and cleanly written, she observes the grief of a mother and grandfather in the unimaginable wake of Children of Earth and provides a possible outcome for Jack Harkness and Alice Carter.

A taste:

Story: Consanguinitas
Author: Selena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2800
Author's Summary: Five glimpses at Alice and her father.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter, Jack Harkness
Warnings: no warnings, but spoilers through Day Three of Children of Earth

Recced because: Everybody has an opinion about Children of Earth, but a few special stories have forgone their authors' opinions and simply worked with the beautiful characters introduced there. Consanguinitas is at the top of my list. It's a series of interactions between Alice and her father at different points in her life, and it paints a vivid, haunting character portrait of Jack Harkness.

Hello! I'm known as Poetry over on the Teaspoon, and I'll be showing you the New Who and Torchwood fics that have dazzled, shocked, and delighted me these past few months. I'm particularly fond of Jack as a character, but I'll try to show you a variety of wonderful characters.

Story: Six Hundred Seconds
Author: Nancy Brown
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4564
Author's Summary: Five proper goodbyes Jack said, and one the Doctor didn't.
Characters/Pairings: Jack, Ten, Tosh, Owen, Ianto, Lisa, Alice, Steven, various others
Warnings: None

Recced because: I had a very hard time choosing a story from Nancy Brown's incredible Rabbit Hole AU series to rec. In the end, I chose the story that started it all. This is a story about a gift the Doctor gives Jack to try to make up for all that he's lost. The gift has an expiration date, though, and you can feel every second draining away. The sequels to this story also come heartily recommended.

Story: Consanguinitas
Author: Selena / [ profile] selenak
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,800
Author's Summary: Five glimpses at Alice and her father.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter, Other Characters
Warnings: Spoilers through Day Three of Children of Earth.

Recced because: If you haven't seen Children of Earth and you don't know who Alice Carter is, then this fic isn't for you as it contains spoilers. If you have seen CoE -- and you found Alice to be as intriguing as I did -- then this is the perfect fic to read. It's a fine character study of Alice (and her father, too) captured in five scenes from her life. It's well-executed and when you read it, you can't help but think that this is exactly how Alice grew up.
