Title: Lost in the Echo
Author: PhoenixDragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2812
Author's Summary: When he cut and ran from the Vortex, the thud-thud-thud of his hearts like drum-beats within his ears, he knew they had deemed him a coward. Unfit. Unbecoming material for Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Borusa, Irving Braxiatel, The Master (Academy era), The Rani (Academy era), The Doctor (1st)
Warnings: None

Recc'ed Because: Great world-building, and a chilling and very believable backstory for how Koschei started on the road to the incessant sound of drums. The Time Lord mythology is both intriguing and mysterious, and I love how the Master's downfall is brought about by his own brilliance and insatiable desire--not just to know, but to cement his own superiority in his mind and chase away his insecurities.

Story: First Steps
Author: Charamei
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 21476
Author's Summary: There's being born, and then there's being born into a world with no adults, no clothes, no food and a terrifying alien Thing upstairs. When their Looms birth them straight into the middle of an emergency, can Our Heroes muddle through?
Characters/Pairings: Irving Braxiatel, The Doctor (1st), The Master (Academy era)
Warnings: None

Recced because: Firstly, this is utterly adorable and completely fantastic. Unfortunately, there aren't an awful lot of accurate Academy - era fics out there, so it's really good to find one. I suppose I should say that, despite this being insanely cute, features some eldritch-y type monsters and a fair amount of suspense for our little Loomlings. Oh, yeah, LOOMS. Which are explained really, really nicely to those who may be unfamiliar with the intricacies of Gallifreyan biology. Which is complex. Plus, the Doctor Who Extended Universe needs a little more recognition.

Author: x_los
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 11771
Author’s Summary: Stealing the contents of the Matrix from Gallifrey’s capitol is easy! And so is a desperate, naïve Theta Sigma. Depending on where you are in your personal time-line.
Characters/Pairings: Delgado!Master/Theta , Theta/Koschei, future Doctor/future Master
Warnings: none

Recced because: I wanted to end on a happy note, and this is the fic I always reread when too much angst has gotten me down. Which isn’t to say the fic is fluff – parts of it are rather a bit angsty – but you can’t have an up without a down. The journey has plenty of emotion, meaning that it really earns its satisfying, heartwarming conclusion.

Best of all, the coda is cleverly set in some ambiguous future, which makes it the ultimate handwave-y fix-it. No matter what sadness has just aired on my TV, this fic is able to reassure me that one day everything will be okay.

Story: Death
Author: MemoryDragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 358
Author's Summary: The Doctor almost couldn't remember a time when the Master wasn't afraid of death.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (5th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Master (Ainley)
Warnings: Angst, Hurt/Comfort

Recced because: This author really should be recced more! They have a lot of good fiction, scattered across many, many eras. Some of us have a habit of sticking to mostly one era - but this author (like my previously recced one), is very comfortable crossing from Classic to New and back again (sometimes even mixing the two). I was going to rec one of those - a fantastic X-Over between Classic and New - when this fiction caught my attention. The episode referenced has long haunted me (and fueled many a mental fic when I was small). The reflections within it are so truthful, there was no way I could waste the reccing opportunity on anything else! I could go on (and likely exceed the wordcount of the story itself), but this is one of those you just need to read. It is not very long at all, but there is so much packed into so few words, you'll find yourself reading it once, twice more just to squeeze every achey drop of nuance from this fiction that you can. A promise made and broken. A friendship that died long ago, yet still lives somewhere inside. Yes...definitely read this! And please let the author know how awesome they are, so we can continue to recieve gems like this one!

Story: Fourteen
http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=35505&warning=Adult
Author: x_los
Summary: They were sleeping together at eight. In the literal “sharing a bed” sense.
Characters: Koschei and Theta aka The Master (Academy era) and The Doctor (Academy era), Ushas aka The Rani (Academy era.) Koschei/Theta pairing.
Word Count: 3411
Rating: R
Warnings: None
Recced because: Adorable Academy era friends to lovers Koschei/Theta story. Covers their friendship from age eight when they looked into the Vortex through the time they make love for the first time. Sweet, funny, warm and fuzzy, with a touch of drums related angst. Told from Koschei’s point of view, as he comes to realize that he wants to be more than friends with Theta.
Excerpt: “The next dream Koschei could remember was several nights later. Theta and Drax were starting up an all-ukulele musical act, but since they’d failed to properly instruct Koschei and Ushas in the ukulele arts, they would have to accept Ushi on tambourine and Koschei on the drums. There was some trouble about getting booked he really couldn’t remember the next day. The weird thing, he thought as he shaved his recently arrived facial hair, carefully omitting the fuzz at his upper lip (he was trying to grow a moustache), was that none of them even really liked Drax. He just sort of hung around. Koschei couldn’t imagine why he’d dream that Drax would be in lead-ukulele position opposite Theta when he was the clear choice for the role.”

And for today's rec we have an author who doesn't seem to have been recced on Calufrax before (and sadly, seems not to be actively writing any more, but who knows what effect a bit of attention and encouragement might have?)

Story: Running
Author: Jesht
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,001
Author's Summary: "The ones that ran away? I never stopped."
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (Academy era), the Master (Academy era)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I find that I really like Gallifrey-set, Doctor-origin-story sort of stuff, up to and including Academy fic. I mean, enough to write it myself and enough to jump into it with both feet if I find it on the Teaspoon or anywhere else. This is another story that I only ran across very recently, although it's a few years old, and it hooked me in instantly.

I know this sort of fic isn't to everybody's taste. I respect the argument that there are some mysteries about the Doctor's past that ought to remain just that - mysteries. That's an important part of what he is as a character and of the whole feel of the show, going right back to that junkyard in 1963. I personally would probably be horrified if the actual show ever decided to tell the definitive version of the Doctor's origins or to reveal anything more than the odd hint or throwaway reminiscence. And not just because it would ruin the air of mystery but because whatever they did, they'd do it "wrong"!

And this is why I think this is a good area for fanfic to explore. Every fic writer is free to explore and play with the material and put their own spin on it, and the rest of us can either take it or leave it depending on our inclinations without anybody expecting us to accept it as "canon". And in the case of Gallifrey and its Academy and the Doctor's early years, we simultaneously know so much and so little. There's so much lore, built up over years of television stories, but so much of it contradicts earlier stories and so many of the key questions remain unanswered that it's ripe for this sort of fictional interpretation and exploration. And this fic is a fine example of the genre. Every fic author worth their salt puts their own unique spin on this material and builds on what we know of Gallifrey in different ways and Jesht is no exception in that regard. We have mention of the Doctor's and Master's families, of the Untempered Schism - of Looms! - and also some intriguing invented Gallifreyan history and politics and all according to the author's own individual vision of how all this should fit together.

And it also addresses something that I think most fan fictioneers who have thought about this stuff have considered, if not actually written; with their long, complex and ever-developing relationship over what we imagine must be centuries, just how did the Doctor and Master first meet? I like the version presented here, for its understatement and for the ring of schoolyard truth it has about it. And the ending of the fic then plays back into the theme of the Doctor-Master relationship as we learn that the Doctor, as we perhaps have suspected for a while now, had the potential to end up more like his "friend" in the end than he would probably like to think in later life. There but for the grace of...etc.

And a question to consider, as you're reading this fic: which Doctor do you hear narrating this story as he looks back on his youth? After a couple of read-throughs, I think I hear Ten now (which would be appropriate considering the bit of onscreen lore the fic is drawing from); what about you? Anyway, go and read it and leave a few words of appreciation; maybe the author will read them and be inspired to take up the quill again.

With the importance of names being a hot topic on the show lately.. This seemed fitting.

Story: Your Name
Author: blaidddrwg
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 24,226
Author's Summary: Exploring the names chosen by the Doctor and the Master, as well as their original, or 'real' names.
Characters/Pairings: Romana I, Romana II, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Master (Other), The Master (Simm), The Rani (Academy era)
Warnings: I suppose there are some incesty-tones here, if you go with the theory that Koschei and Theta are brothers, but they are easily ignored if you choose to do so

Recced because: Throughout both classic and new Who the Doctor and the Master keep intriguing and making us guess about their original relationship. This fic explores the possibility that they may have been brothers (twins, in fact) and it strangely seems to fit. I don't think everyone will agree with this theory, but it's a nice framework for this fic and truly transforms the Koschei/Theta dynamics into two sides of the same medal.
The first few chapters give a really good feel, I think, of what they academy might have been like and the shenanigans the both of them might have gotten up to. More interesting is the tension that already starts to spiral out of control as both boys grow up and their relationship already begins to fracture. blaidddrwg focuses on the inner thoughts and telepathic life of the two main characters very well as well, really drawing the reader into the relationship and letting the audience get very close. This fic is definitely an interesting window into Time Lord psychology and shed a light on a possible angle of the Doctor's and the Master's history.
The last two chapters link all this prior, non-canon history to scenes from canon, completing the circle in a way. We readers read the academy chapters with our canon-based background and in the last two chapters we review this familiar canon within the framework blaidddrwg has given us in earlier chapters.

Even if you don't feel you can agree on the idea that the Doctor and the Master are brothers, I'd still advise you to read this fic if only because it offers so many interesting new angles to this set of characters who seem to be forever spiralling together - pulling and pushing at each other constantly.

Author's Summary: A cautionary tale, really.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (Academy Era), The Master (Academy Era)
Warnings: none

Recced because: I read this fic very early on in my introduction to fandom, and I'm really glad. It has an interesting take on the Koschei and Theta dynamic (which has kind of been explored in as many ways as possible, at this point). And it's also very lyrical and clearly-written and real.

Story: With Justice and Honour
Author: JJPOR
Rating:All Ages
Word Count:2559
Author's Summary:“I swear to protect the Ancient Law of Gallifrey with all my might and brain. I will to the end of my days with justice and with honour temper my actions and my thoughts.” SPOILERS for Waters of Mars
Characters/Pairings:Other Character(s), Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (Academy era), The Master (Academy era), The Rani (Academy era)
Warnings: None, aside from Spoilers for Waters of Mars

Recced because: I waffled in reccing this piece. I know the author and I recced the author last time I recced and while that may look like favouritism; it doesn't stop the author or this piece, in particular, from being just that good. Rather than commit reverse nepotism I have decided to rec this. With Justice and Honour is an an academy days tale, and I know many are put off by those, but this piece was written post-Waters of Mars and in that light this early days tale takes a strange sort of ambiguity that haunts the reader. Also, as this story happened so long before any we have seen in canon (using only what the series entitled Doctor Who shows as canon to avoid arguments without end)it also lends that sort of haunting ambiguity to some other, classic era events (The Key to Time in particular). As usual, JJPOR (the author) spins a tightly woven tale that manages to hurt without being angsty and manages to heal while straying closer to the Valeyard side of the Doctor.

Recced because: A nice portrayal of the Master's early recklessness (and it must be fairly extreme if it upsets the Doctor) and the Doctor's feeling that his best friend is not all there. The final line is darkly ironic.

Warnings: None.

Recced because: This is one of those stories that I honestly can't believe hasn't been recced before as it is utterly, utterly brilliant. I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite Master story. The author gets him. But not only that, she manages to make him even more complex than he already was, which is a pretty monumental feat in and of itself. I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say this is an absolute must read.

Characters/Pairings: Theta, Koschei, Ushas (Doctor, Master, Rani)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's utterly, unspeakably hilarious and involves both the Toaster of Rassilion and asperiations being cast upon Omega's virtue. I dare not say more, for it is but a drabble; as such, however, it's a quick and excellently funny read.

Warnings: Graphic sex

Recced because: This is labelled as PWP, but there's a lot more to it than that; it's certainly the most in depth PWP I've read in a long while, and it has the most fantastic dialogue, and yet it has the most simple premise: Theta and Koschei are studying, then they have sex, then they go back to studying. It's simple yet perfect. And the sex? Well, it's just so in character with Theta so eager to please in any way he can.

Word Count: 1,834
Author's Summary: Theta and Koschei (and Ushas) have a lot of time to kill.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor, The Master, The Rani (all Academy-era)
Warnings: None

Recced because: If the Doctor, the Master, and the Rani were trouble after graduation, just imagine what they got up to before they left the Academy. Bored college students find all sorts of inappropriate things to occupy themselves: computer hacking ... dorm room redecoration ... casual sex ... TARDIS-building. (Okay, that last one definitely didn't happen at my college, but everything else was awfully familiar.) This is a wry character study that points out how little difference there is between extracurricular interests and full-time occupations, at least for these three Time Lords, and though I don't often read Academy-era fic, this is one of my favorites.
