Story: Universes Apart
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5324
Author's Summary: They found each other through the skin of the universe.
Characters/Pairings: Gwen Cooper/Rose Tyler, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: None

Recced because: Rose and Gwen seem like the least likeliest of pairings. And yet this bittersweet fic, where Rose and Gwen communicate between Pete's World and the regular Doctor Who universe, makes this pairing work without forcing it in this fic.

Story: A Man's Game
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3009
Author's Summary: Science is a man's game, but Liz Shaw likes to think that she knows how to play along.
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, The Brigadier, Sarah Jane Smith, UNIT.
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: An early rec today (it's just past midnight in my part of the world!).

One of the strengths, I think, of Classic Who is that the lack of focus on the companions' personal lives leaves them far more open to interpretation than their more modern counterparts.  This in particular is an interpretation I love: Liz, trying to find her place as a scientist in a male-dominated world, and figuring out how to deal with her sexuality in a world that is, across the timespan of the story, not entirely accepting - if it is at all.  The counters to this are the Brigadier, who brings some real warmth to all his scenes, and Sarah Jane herself, who dances and flirts her way through this in perfect character.  Liz is (as I may have mentioned) one of my favourite companions, and this story more than does her justice both as a scientist and as a person.

I'm Marcus Rowland, and I'll be your reccer this week. As usual I'll try for a mixed bag including some classic and modern Who, crossovers and pure Who*, etc.
* Which I consider to include Torchwood, SJA, etc.

Story: Down The Rabbit Hole
Author: Atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3341
Author's Summary: Liz found that she wanted to give River a chance that she didn’t necessarily deserve. It was unusual and irrational, but she’d felt the same way when she’d met the Doctor for the first time.
Characters/Pairings: Liz Shaw, River Song, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I was saddened to hear of the death of Caroline John (Liz Shaw) last week, and wanted to include at least one story starring her. This one is a beauty, in which she encounters a mysterious stranger named River Song and together they fight aliens and snark at the Doctor's less desirable qualities, before going off to do science (archaeology) together.

On to the era of the First Doctor with his very first, non-TARDIS companion....

Story: Temptation
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 469
Author's Summary: Susan didn’t dream of Gallifrey anymore. Not really.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman
Warnings: no standard warnings apply
Recced because: This ficlet explores Susan’s feelings after she decided to hop in the TARDIS with her grandfather. As she discovers new lands, she wants to change things for her friends as well as her grandfather. She explores this in dreams. The imagery is very vivid and the ficlet’s charming.

It's been a fun week. In the spirit of this last rec, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Story: The Hitchhiker's Guide to Surviving a Dalek Invasion
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1038
Author's Summary: Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz was having a very bad day. The planet he had been ordered to demolish appeared to have disappeared.
[A The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy crossover.]
Characters/Pairings: Alan Jackson, Maria Jackson, various Daleks, various characters from HG2G.
Warnings: None

Recced because: In the middle of the Dalek invasion of Journey's End/The Stolen Earth, Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox concentrate on the important things, like another drink; Arthur isn't surprised; Marvin finds someone to talk to, and everyone fits right in. This perfectly captures the tone of the books and works so brilliantly that I'm convinced it was happening just off-screen. The native characters are written just as well, and I love Alan's observations on what his daughter has learned from Sarah Jane.

Hey, hi! I'm neveralarch, and I'm going to be your reccer this week. It's going to be mostly fic based on the Big Finish audio series, but there will probably be some other areas of the fandom represented as well. I hope you'll check the stories out even if you're not familiar with the specific source material - they're all really good.

Anyway! On to the fic.

Story: The Storyteller
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2969
Author's Summary: Leela's stories begin with one Time Lord and end with another.
Characters/Pairings: Leela/Romana II, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I read this fic before I listened to the Gallifrey audio series and before I watched almost any of Four, back when I only had a vague idea of who Romana or Leela were. This fic serves as a lovely introduction to both of their characters, and Leela in particular. Leela's struggle to live in and to change Gallifreyan society is depicted without shying away from the difficulties. But Leela doesn't lose hope, even at the bittersweet end.

Hello, and welcome to Calufrax Pitry's 2010 reccing comm! I'm Pitry, and I'll be your reccer for this year week. I bring you a variety of recs to enjoy the end of 2009 2010 and the beginning of 2010 2011. And now I shall spare you any more failed attempts at humour and go to my first story:

Story: All These Things That We've Done (The Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Remix)
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,516
Author's Summary: “Another world, Doctor! You've brought Miss Shaw and myself to another world without even asking for our consent!”
Characters/Pairings: Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart/Liz Shaw, The Third Doctor.
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a very sweet and funny what-if story, that gives two wonderful companions the chance to see what's out there. It was always quite a shame they didn't get it in the show itself, especially Liz, and I'm all for fixing that unfortunate situation. Atraphoenix doesn't just fix it, but fixes it with a lot of honesty for the characters (and some romance to boot), a good story and the right amount of humour to make a story truly joyful to read.

Another week of reccing done.  I hope you found something you liked!

Story: The Girl at the Bottom of the Garden

Author: Atraphoenix

Rating: All Ages

Word Count: 1106

Author's Summary: Luke Smith has a new friend. She lives in the shed at the bottom of his garden.

Characters/Pairings: Luke Smith, Susan Foreman

Warnings: None

Recced because:

Darn it, I tried to rec authors who haven’t been recced before, but some of the stories I’ve marked as favorites are just too good to ignore.  I think Luke and Susan have a lot in common, since they are both very intelligent and slightly odd.  Luke’s fumbling attempts at romance are endearingly awkward, and would be even if he wasn’t a genetically engineered genius.

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1501
Author's summary: Zoe couldn’t continue to wander around the bridge in that catsuit. It was Kirk's job – his duty, even – to get her out of it.
Characters/Pairings: Zoe Heriot/James T Kirk, Spock
Warnings: Star Trek XI crossover

Recced because: This fic is my fault and I will freely admit it. After Star Trek XI came out, I commented in my lj that it would be awesome if Zoe/Kirk fic were to exist and [livejournal.com profile] atraphoenix took the idea and ran with it. Which I will be be forever grateful for, because this fic exceeds my wildest expectations. It's exceedingly fun to read. Kirk is so very Kirk and Zoe so very Zoe and I challenge anyone to not grin at the thought of Zoe on the Enterprise in science division blues.

Story: Drumbeat
Author: [livejournal.com profile] atraphoenix
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2191
Author's Summary: “Yes, but you are biased when it comes to the subject of the Master, are you not, Madam President?”
Characters/Pairings: Romana/Master
Warnings: A bit of sex,

Recced because:  I love stories set during the Time War -- good people sacrificing principles and lives to save the unsavable.  This story captures it well, as Romana is driven to resurrect the Master.  Their interplay is dark and hot -- Jacobi!Master doesn't get nearly enough play.  This leaves me wanting more, but also a bit fearful of seeing what comes next.

Story: Those Left Behind
Author: [livejournal.com profile] atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1473
Author's Summary: ”You don’t need to feel sorry for me,” said Liz. “Life on Earth can be an adventure too, you know.”
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/Liz Shaw
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love the Third Doctor era, I love femslash, and I love Liz Shaw (and Sarah Jane too). This story works for me because the author does a great job of capturing Sarah and Liz's opposing attitudes toward the Doctor and what life without him means to them.

A small taste... )

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,251
Author's Summary: She blew up the university halfway through Martha’s first week.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Martha
Warnings: None

Recced because: If there's an obscure pairing I'm weak for, it's Ace/Martha, and this story paints a bittersweet picture of what happens when the two women meet for the first time. Martha, just starting out at university, isn't quite sure of her place in the world, while streetwise Ace teaches her there's more to life than her studies. With Ace just marking time until the Doctor returns, her relationship with Martha can't possibly last, but Martha takes away memories – and explosives – that change her life.

Because apparently two recs today are not quite enough. ;) This brings me a little closer to my target of seven, anyway, and will be my last for this week. It's been a lot of fun!

Story: A Knight in Shining Armour
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1854
Author's Summary: “I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Life on Earth, after everything I’ve seen? How am I supposed to get back to normal?”
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan/Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Recced because: A really gorgeous version of what happened between Sarah Jane and Harry after she left the TARDIS. My very favourite thing about this is that it has a brilliant twist part way through that just makes the whole piece and feels very real. There's lovely Harry characterization particularly, and Sarah Jane's is great too, and the ending is completely wonderful.

Story: The Slow Path
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All ages
Author's Summary: Susan Foreman takes the slow path.
Characters/Pairings: Susan Foreman, Liz Shaw, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Donna Noble, Harry Sullivan, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jo Grant, John Benton, Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith, the Tenth Doctor (Liz/Brig, mentions of Susan/David)
Warnings: None
Word Count: 3,306

Recced because: The story of Susan, living her life on 'the slow path' is elegantly woven into the Doctor's history. It's brilliant seeing how she interacts with many of the same people her grandfather did, just a step out of time with him.

A little hint of what is to come. )

And 'round we go again! This week I'm going to bring you three authors who haven't been recced here before, and some Big Finish and PDA love. Enjoy!

Story: Once Upon A Time
Author: atraphoenix
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Ian Chesterton was a scientist. He wasn’t supposed to believe in fairy tales.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~1,200 words

Recced because: A beautiful story (written for me!), describing Ian's growth and journey through life and love, and his beliefs. The structure is terrific, with the story spinning out around a core of fairy tales, and using all sorts of little tricks like pointing out the narrative conventions being (currently) subverted. We see the world and Barbara through his eyes – and get to see a kick-ass moment for Barbara – and it's loving, creative, and thoughtful. Poisoned apples, and cursed spinning wheels. No kisses just yet, Ian thinks, waiting for his chance to be the knight on a white horse – or as best as he can be, whatever Barbara needs. Lovely work.
