Is that all we have time for? Well then, thank you for watching my calufrax recs and here's hoping I'll be back again soon with 7 more fics! Roll on [livejournal.com profile] shelwass's reign! To finish one I'm going to end with something a little fun... There's no place like home.

Story: Over the Rainbow
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,097
Author's Summary: The Doctor's been wandering about the strangest place of all, Oz. A little slice of his time with the mystical Wizard.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Madame de Pompadour, Mickey Smith
Warnings: n/a

Recced because: Oh, this is a beautiful, clever piece. I love it when an author can so successfully place the canon of one story into the canon of the other and make it seem like they were made for each other. The chemistry between the characters makes it obvious who everyone is and why, and it works so well. It is also, absolutely, a barrel of laughs. I was giggling from start to finish. Hands on my side stitches, lemme tell you. Not to mention it's just plain well-written, structure and grammar wise. And then somewhere... it grows dizzy. Disorientating. The ending was the biggest surprise ever, given the start. A brilliant way to end the recs and a reminder that not all is as it seems...

Story: In Dreams
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3290
Author's Summary: Time Lords don't, by design, dream. But the Doctor is a very different sort of Time Lord.
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, the Master (Delgado), the Master (Ainley), the Master (Roberts), the Master (Jacobi), the Master (Simm)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's a fic that starts with Gallifreyan language, continues with the Doctor waiting for a bus, and has the respective Doctors and Masters - well, challenging each other, or rather, the Doctor challenges himself. And run away from that challenge in the same time. What is there not to absolutely love?

Hi, I'm LibraryLover82, aka Library_Lover on Teaspoon.  I'll be your reccer again this week.  Between what I have recced before and what others have recced my favorites list has been well represented here, so this is going to be a challenge.  Most of my recs will be fairly short stories, because that's all I've had time to read lately.  Hopefully that means you will have time to read them and leave a comment for the authors!

Story: Anatomy of a Scene: Waters of Mars
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1,230
Author's Summary: A slice of time as the Doctor makes a very key decision.
Characters/Pairings: 10th Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because:
This explores what was going on in the Doctor’s head as he walked away from Bowie Base One.  I think it is an excellent portrayal of how conflicted and chaotic the Doctor’s feelings would have been at that moment.  You can imagine how he decided to go against everything he has been taught his whole life.

Story: Sea of Love
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2306
Author's Summary: Jo Grant's daughter is getting married and there's an unexpected guest at the wedding.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, the Doctor (10th), Cliff Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: This fic effectively got jossed by the Sarah Jane Adventures Death of the Doctor episode, but I somehow only appreciate it more for it. I think it does a lot of what that episode does so well, in giving us and Jo closure, but portrays her as slightly less dotty and just as awesome. This is a lovely, sweet short fic, well worth reading even if you don’t know much about Jo Grant, as it is also commentary about all of the Doctor’s former companions and how they move on.

Story:What We Might Have Been
Author: Rickmaniac
Rating: All Ages
Word Count:1463
Author's Summary:The Doctor says goodbye to a companion who no longer remembers him.
Characters/Pairings:Donna Noble, The Doctor (10th), Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings: None

Recced because: Obviously, there's something very poignant about The Doctor and Donna bumping into Jamie McCrimmon on his deathbed. Obviously, there's an eerie aching sort of foreshadowing occurring. Thankfully, Rickmaniac101 (the author) handles this topic beautifully; never forcing the reader to see the obvious parallel. Her phraseology and tone are both understated and almost elegant. I also quite liked her brief description of the incarnations after their death, it's simple but powerful. The piece is on the short side but truly has a quiet beauty, a must read.

Story: Birth of Destruction
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 12235
Author's Summary: While trapped in 1969, the Doctor finds employment at the local hospital and finds much more than he bargained for.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha Jones, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Warnings: None

Recced because: I always love the stories where the Doctor meets up with old companions when he and Martha are trapped back in 1969. This one does it within the context of a traditional Doctor Who mystery story, with aliens, murder, running down corridors, and a good set of original characters to balance it out and give it the feel of an actual episode of the show. It's nice to see Barbara (Wright) Chesterton still true to form, observant and sharp and quite able to take initiative once her suspicions are raised. And the interactions between Ten and Martha, as they transition from dealing with the mundane things like flats and jobs and money, over to conspiracy, alien invasion and general otherworldly peril, are really fun.

It's been a pleasure, but the end of the week has come. Thank you all, and here is something fun to go out on:

Story: One Does Not Simply Materialize Into Middle Earth . . .
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1803
Author's Summary: A silly little crossover ficlet with "Lord of the Rings", if the Doctor found the ring rather than Frodo and goes to the Elrond Council Meeting. Hilarity, naturally, ensues.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, the Council of Elrond from "The Fellowship of the Ring"
Warnings: None

Recced because: You mean the title's not enough? Okay, how about this, then: Doctor Who is a show that is incredibly easy to use in a crossover -- the Doctor can go anywhere in time and space, after all -- and also incredibly difficult to use in a crossover, because more often than not, the tone of what's being crossed doesn't match up with the show, and the author has to deal with that somehow. This story takes a natural clash of tone between Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings and doesn't just deal with it, it revels in it. Neil Simon once said about "The Odd Couple" that its humor was entirely character-driven, as there wasn't a single joke in the entire play. The same is true of this story. It's crack that isn't crack at all, because while it's hilariously funny, everyone -- the Doctor, Martha, Elrond, Gandalf, everyone -- is completely, utterly in character throughout. And yes, that's exactly why this is so funny, and such a brilliant crossover.

Here, try it out )

Story: "Dancing at the Sugar Shack"
Author:  rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2218
Author's Summary: "The Doctor gets a one-night stint waiting tables, greeting, and stripping at the Sugar Shack. Oh, the humanity."
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, OCs
Warnings: Swearing, otherwise none

Recced because: I was introduced to this story via the Children of Time awards (in which it took a first round Runner-up win in the "crackfic" category), and it's a real gem.  It's told from the POV of an OC, Big Jake, the bouncer-turned-owner of a male strip club, the Sugar Shack.  We've probably all seen cringe-worthy OCs, but Big Jake proves how *much* a well-written OC can add to a story.  The same can be said of writing in dialect; too often it comes across as hokey and forced, but in this story, you feel like you're sitting at a table with Big Jake, having a beer and listening to his tale about a weird, skinny guy who showed up at the club one night . . . Laugh-out-loud funny stuff, with just a dash of angst to make it believably Ten-ish.

Story: Does He Love You?
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All Ages - None - Character Study, Drama, Missing Scene
Word Count: 718
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, The Doctor (10th)
Author's Summary: A missing scene from "The Sontaran Stratagem". The Doctor and Martha discuss work, engagements, and how Martha has changed.
Warnings: Um, angst I guess.

Recced because: I love that you can practically cut the awkwardness with a knife. This fic addresses Martha and Ten's history in a realistic way instead of the "no hard feelings and instant fiance we won't bother show" bit we were fed in the series 4 Martha episodes.

Story: Requiem for a Companion
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: None given (Gen)
Author's Summary: Each of the Doctors attend the funeral of a very dear departed friend.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor, Second Doctor, Third Doctor, Fourth Doctor, Fifth Doctor, Sixth Doctor, Seventh Doctor, Eighth Doctor, Ninth Doctor, Tenth Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Romana II, Susan Foreman
Warnings: Character Death
Word Count: 1,586

Recced because: I adore all of MJ's fics, and would rec any of them, but there is something special about this one. I keep coming back to it, reading it over and over again, savoring lines and paragraphs (there's one, about Doctors' Five through Nine, that is just amazing.) Not only is this a brilliant tribute to one of my favorite companions, but she captures the characters of all ten Doctors perfectly.

A little hint of what is to come. )

Story: First Love
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: G
Word Count: 915
Author's Summary: You never forget your first love. The Doctor is no different. Set pre-series.
Characters/Pairings: First Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Rickmaniac101 captures the essence of the Doctor as a young man -- his enthusiasm and sheer child-like glee at discovering a new world and being entranced by its inhabitants.

Story: Postcards From The Edge of Everywhere.
Author: lollobrigida.
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 1215.
Author's Summary: Donna decides she's going to get the Doctor a new Birthday. Companion Piece to : Lost Letters by rickmaniac101
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None.

Story: Lost Letters.
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 1059.
Author's Summary: The Doctor receives a letter a little too late.
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, The Doctor (10th)
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I saw Postcards... on the 'Most Recent' list and gave it a go. It was absolutely adorable! Then I read the piece that it was a companion to, and actually went 'Awww!' Because both fics fit so well together, and they're both fairly short (2274 words combined), I recced them both. And hey, it's my last day reccing. I wanted to go out with a smile.

They are a little spoilery for S4 and the S4 finale, especially Lost Letters, but not by much. Mostly just brief mentions of an episode or two. You can read these in either order and they still work brilliantly together. I read them in the order I posted them in first, then the other way around. They just go that well together. These two left me feeling all warm and fuzzy. So. Go! Read! Get all warm and fuzzy!

Story: Not One Line
Author: rickmaniac101
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 4389
Author's Summary: The Doctor and River always begin things at the end. This is their life.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/River Song
Warnings: SPOILERS for 4X09 "Forest of the Dead"

Recced because: I felt the need to recommend a Doctor/River story, and there was this one, teasing the reader something mad. All the usual and expected things happen - the story being inevitable - but it still managed to make me squirm and twitch and stupidly hope that it would end differently. The Tenth Doctor displays a rare and painful self awareness, River is everything I loved about her in the show itself, and, stunningly, the end does manage to surprise. Reactions to River split the fandom and looking for fics if you liked her can be daunting, so I figured I'll do fellow fans a service: this one delivers.
