Story: Porn 3.0
Author: nostalgia
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1712
Author's Summary: The Doctor helps himself and Donna gets something out of it. As it were. (Doctor/Donna.)
Characters/Pairings: Ten/Donna
Warnings: explicit sex, swearing

Recced because: After a week of reccing some fairly heavy, introspective/emotional stuff, I thought I'd close with something light and fun.

While I sometimes find PWPs enjoyable even if I don't really buy into the pairing, after a while -- no matter how well-written -- they can tend to all sort of blur together for me. Which is why I love this little thing. It may or may not have been meant as crack, but to me it's a hilarious and brilliantly blunt satire. I'll never look at that sort of story the same way again.

Story: Make the Man
Author: Cryptile
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1768
Author's Summary: Ode to a black leather jacket.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Rose (but Rose isn't really in it much)
Warnings: None

Recced because: The "new Doctor picks his outfit" scene is a hallowed Doctor Who ritual. Here Cryptile explores Ten's change of clothes and how it signaled inward changes as well, contrasting Nine's forbidding, no-frills ensemble with the almost aggressive quaintness of the classic series incarnations, and offering a possible reason why Ten in turn dressed the way *he* did.

What's really amazing is that this story was posted nearly a month before New Earth first aired, when Ten was still shiny and new and his surface had yet to be scratched.

Oh, and the last line especially is a killer.

Story: Learn to Fly
Author: RGRoberts
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 971
Author's Summary: He learns her, and she learns him. Over the years, the Doctor and the TARDIS bond like few Time Lords and TARDISes ever have.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor and the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic supplements the canon episode The Doctor's Wife so well that it's hard to believe it was actually posted to Teaspoon roughly three years *before* the episode aired. One might indeed imagine that Neil Gaiman could have seen and been at least partly inspired by it. Of all the TARDIS fics I've seen, none have summed up the fractious yet loving relationship between a time ship and her Thief nearly so perfectly or so poetically. (This is another one that is not really about any one specific Doctor, though Ten is mentioned at the end.)

Story: Aftermath
Author: Adalia Zandra
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5836
Author's Summary: She didn't know them, but she knew that they'd abandoned him. And she found herself hating them for that.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Sarah Jane
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well, because Ten is my favorite new series Doctor, and Sarah Jane is my favorite classic series companion, and I am a sucker for the "Ten goes to Sarah Jane for comfort" trope. In the wake of the end of Series 3, the Doctor has been left alone again with a story of his own to tell but no one to tell it to... no one except Sarah Jane, who draws it out of him with her skillful and compassionate questioning so that we get to hear about the Year That Never Was from his POV, without embellishment -- well, nearly.

Teaspoon is awash in angst fics, yet this is one of the relatively few (in my experience) that treats the Doctor as a *person* and not a chew toy. It's my go-to fic whenever I've just rewatched TLotTL.

Story: After Reinette
Author: DameRuth
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1920
Author's Summary: In the aftermath of "The Girl In The Fireplace," Rose learns some uncomfortable things about herself, and makes a major decision.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Rose
Warnings: None

Recced because: It seems to me that it's a rare thing when a fic takes some commonly-heard fan opinion -- such as "Ten was wrong to leave Rose to go save Reinette" -- and flips it over. What would have happened if he hadn't? And more importantly, would he still have been the Doctor? Here's a missing-scene fic in which Rose takes a long hard look at those questions, and at herself.

Though some might not agree, I've always found Rose to be one of the more believable companions, in that she was very human and very young, with some growing up still to do. I like to imagine that there was a moment like this when some of that growing up might have happened. And that's one of the things I read fanfic for.

Story: Hope Deferred
Author: synaesthete7
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 857
Author's Summary: Donna Noble was special. So why didn't the Doctor warn her?
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Donna
Warnings: None

Recced because: A *lot* of people were angered by the way Donna was written out in Journey's End. As someone whose favorite Doctor-companion team ever is still Ten and Donna, I'm not exactly happy about it myself. Still, this tenderly written vignette does the best job I've ever seen of looking into the Doctor's mind at the end of that episode, why he did what he did, and how he saw the unique relationship he shared with her. I don't cry at fics, but the last line brings me damn close.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] sue_denimme, first-time reccer. The fics I will be reccing all have three things in common: 1. They mostly feature Ten, though I did do my best to vary the other characters. 2. They either don't have a ship (unless you count *friend*ship), or the ship is not prominent. 3. They're short (the longest is under 6000 words).

So here goes:

Story: More Than a Name
Author: Emery_Board
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 643
Author's Summary: There have been secrets since the dawn of time. This is not one of them. There are secrets that would shatter the foundations of the universe. This is not that sort of secret. Perhaps the reason the Doctor refuses a name is simply because he has hundreds, and still none of them describe him properly.
Characters/Pairings: Ten (though it's really more about the overall character of the Doctor)
Warnings: None

Recced because: "Doctor who?" It's the show's longest-running gag. I'm actually about 95-99% certain that the question will never be resolved on screen. Why? Because after all these decades of teasing and dancing about the issue, what name could the writers possibly finally give him that wouldn't seem anticlimactic? And how could canon ever answer the question better than Emery_Board does in this little treasure of a fic? I particularly love the second half, and most especially the third-to-last paragraph. It gives me chills, happy chills. Really, read it. Just read it.
