(I swear the next rec is pretty gen, I'm sorry y'all, this is just the subset of fandom I know well enough to rec competently in.)

Story: The Sleepwalker
Author: Aralias
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 20082
Author's Summary: “One day the Doctor woke up. (Eight/Master - written for the Buffy 'Normal Again' prompt on Best_Enemies)”
Characters: Charley Pollard, C’Rizz, Grace Holloway, Romana II, The Doctor (8th), The Master (Roberts), LOTS of Eight companions, in passing
Pairings: Eight/Roberts!Master
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing (I’d add major character death, self-harm due to the mechanism of a plot thing)
Recced because:

The Doctor keeps swapping between his life on the TARDIS and a mundane AU where he’s a physicist teaching at Berkley in 2001, married to Roberts!Master and surrounded by people he knows in canon, but with switched-around names. Is it a fluff piece about them being humans and married and the Master mostly not being a terrible person who’d kill people? Or is it really disturbing and sad, a set up predicated on psychological weaponry (the origins of the Daleks’ Nightmare Child project) from the start of the Time War? Perhaps that depends on how creeped out you are by the ‘which of these lives is real’ “Normal Again” dilemma.

Why this fic is important. )

Hello everyone, I'm annauq and I'm back for another round of reccing!
To start of my week(s) I have something featuring one of my favourite tardis teams.

Story: Tea in the tardis
Author: platoapproved
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1310
Author's Summary: The Doctor and Charley make C'rizz drink a cup of tea for the first time. Set after Caerdroia.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (8th), Charley Pollard, C'rizz, the TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well-written C'rizz fic, do I need another reason? the Doctor makes tea, Charley has a laugh and C'rizz is confused by it all. It's full of little references to their adventures and feels like part of one. In short: it captures the feel of their era perfectly(is it an era, can I call it an era?): it's cute, hilarious but also a little bit angsty.

Platoapproved writes C'rizz's wonder and confusion wonderfully without making him sound childish or naïve. His unique qualities are subtly explored, and his fears feel very real without completely taking over the scene. I've always thought C'rizz was a fascinating character, and I'm forever sad his personality didn't get explored more before he, euhm.. left.

Apparently a mark of great (big finish) fanfic is when you hear the voices of the characters in your head as you read, and that is certainly the case here. So, go ahead and read!

Happy Saturday! Today we're era hopping.

Story: A Shift in Perspective
Author:Persiflage
Rating:
 Teen
Word Count:
 50234
Author's Summary:
The Tenth Doctor goes missing and it's up to Martha Jones to track him down again, but it proves both harder and more instructive than she expects.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (All incarnations), The White Guardian, Torchwood, a plethora of companions
Warnings: Spoilers for just about everything. They are warned for in the author's notes of each section.

Recced because: Set a few months after series 4, "A Shift in Perspective" sends Martha on a journey that has her meeting the Doctor - yes, every incarnation of him. What stands out about this particular fic (and Persiflage's writing in general) is her nuanced and strong portrayal of Martha Jones: she's independent, she's strong, and she does what she has to do. Part of the charm of "A Shift in Perspective" is the fact that you get to see glimpses of Martha interacting with all of the Doctors (who are all impeccably characterized) as well as many of the previous companions. Moreover, the fic is fast-paced and features a solid plot alongside the solid characterizations. Overall, a wonderful fic to park yourself and read on a summer day (or on any day, really).

A small sample... )

Story: Disturbing Conversations
Author: jedi_penguin
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 930
Author's Summary: Missing Scene from “Caerdroia” – C’rizz needs a distraction from the Doctor’s distraction.
Characters/Pairings: Eight, C'rizz

Recced because: 'Caerdroia' is win, particularly the strange pairing of delightfully confused Tigger!Eight and C'rizz, who is quite serious most the time and has just discovered he's afraid of cows. The Doctor and C'rizz don't really talk that much in canon, which is a shame, because C'rizz really is about the most alien person the Doctor has ever travelled with, and so he should rightfully have a lot of questions. Isn't he curious? Well, he is now, and he's in the Garden of Curiosities, so it's a good place to talk about... mating! Although C'rizz doesn't see it that way. This short funny scene fits in perfectly with the tone of its parent audio and could probably slot neatly into its time line.

Story: Confession
Author: Bagheera
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1043
Author's summary: C'rizz isn't a monk anymore, but it's hard to let go of old habits. The Doctor suggests that he and C'rizz play a game.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor/C'rizz
Warnings: Religious kink, flagellation

Recced because: Is it terribly gauche to rec a fic someone else wrote for you? Quite possibly, but I can't find the will in me to care because this is a very good fic. It's intense--I really think that's the best word for it--and Bagheera does an exemplary job of maintaining the mood throughout. Bagheera's characterization is flawless: her C'rizz sounds as if Conrad Westermaas himself was speaking his dialog and her Eighth Doctor is just a little bit fucked-up underneath the Romantic figure beloved of fangirls. (This, I feel, is how he ought to be written whenever possible. Despite his innocent exterior, he's still the one most likely to be responsible for ending the Time War.)

Despite the adult rating, it's less than completely explicit. I don't really think the fic suffers for lack of graphic descriptions, though. (And if you've never listened to any of the Eighth Doctor audios you still should be able to enjoy this, because the story spoilers absolutely nothing in them except for the fact that C'rizz is an alien and a former monk, which is something you would find out right away after he shows up anyhow.)

I'll give you the first bit of it as a teaser... )

This week I will be spreading the Big Finish love. I'm going to rec stories for a different Big Finish companion each day.

Story: Chameleon
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jedi_penguin
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 360
Author's Summary:
Good and Evil can’t hide from C’rizz. He takes them in and makes them his own. He knows Good because he knows Charley.
Characters/Pairings: C'rizz/Charley
Warnings: Just for C'rizz in general.

Recced because: It's says C'rizz/Charley and it is, but it's more than that. This is a wonderful character study of C'rizz as well. C'rizz is an often forgotten Companion and [livejournal.com profile] jedi_penguin shows the many facets of C'rizz in a few short words. It's brilliant.

Story: Like Nobody's Watching
Author: Andraste
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: The Doctor has been dancing for a long time.
Characters/Pairings: Doctors One through Ten, also Barbara, Ian, Vicki, Ben, Polly, Benton, Romana I, Tegan, Turlough, Evelyn, Mel, Charley, C'rizz, Rose and Jack. (Apologies to the unfortunate person doing the tags...)
Warnings: None

Recced because:
Ten Doctors, thirteen companions and a hell of a lot of dancing (that's dancing, not 'dancing'). I really appreciated the fact that this went for some less usual Doctor-companion pairs - Benton, C'rizz, the Seven segment being about Mel instead of Ace. I loved this for the humour and the insight, but what pushed it into must-rec category was the last section, with Barbara dancing at her wedding with a strange man in a pin-stripe suit, bringing the dance right back to the beginning.
