Story: By the Numbers
Author: winterd
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2097
Author's Summary: There were always surprises with the Doctor. Delaks. Cybermen. His regeneration. Hers.
Characters/Pairings: Rose Tyler, the Doctor (various future forms)
Recced Because: The idea of the Bad Wolf imbuing Rose with Time Lord qualities, including regeneration, was visited and re-visited in lots of fanfic stories after Parting of the Ways came out. "By The Numbers" stands out because it's a "Rose Regenerates" story that really and truly gives her a life of her own, nine times over. Instead of focusing on telling a short story in detail, it spins Rose's lives out across the centuries, in broad strokes, by the numbers. It explores what is lost when Rose becomes more than human, how this affects her and the person (people) she becomes. Rose's new (and not wholly wanted) alien life intersects with the Doctor's, of course, but also is not defined by it. We see first hand how, with a Time Lord life span, everything is fleeting.
