Story: Chance and a Grey Sky
Author: rivendellrose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2154
Author's Summary: Susan Ivanova meets a strange woman on an isolated planet. (Crossover with Babylon 5, post "Sleeping in Light.")
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Susan Ivanova
Warnings: None

Recced because: If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, odds are good that you’d love Babyon 5 (give it a try if you haven’t already!). If you’re not familiar with it, some background will help: B5’s five-year plot ultimately centers around an epic war between two ancient, powerful races who were originally charged to be the protectors and guiders of lesser species (i.e. humans) but differed so widely about how to go about doing this that they ended up using us all as pawns in a war stretching for millenia – first a Cold War, but then a very hot one indeed.

Or to put it another way: Babyon 5 is what would happen if someone set a sci-fi series during the Time War from the point of view of the species who are caught in the crossfire, asked to choose sides, destroyed by whichever side they rebuff, and in all cases fundamentally unprepared to choose between two races who don’t actaully look that different from our limited point of view. Cass from “Night of the Doctor” would be the main character.

All of that aside, this alas-too-short fic is set post-series for B5 and centers on Susan Ivanova in the twilight of her career (arguably the character who walked away with the most scars), setting her up with Romana (also fresh from the Time War) in a character-driven piece that is both achingly sweet and inexpressibly sad. The fic doesn’t flinch from any of the realities of what the characters have been through but still manages to end on a believably hopeful note. Comforting without being saccharine, it’s exactly what I need after all the tragedy. Give it your time and you won’t be disappointed.

Story: Moments of Life Unremembered
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 2685
Author's Summary: What does a moment mean, if you don't remember it? (Series of connected vignettes)
Characters/Pairings: Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Handy, Gwen Cooper, Tom Milligan, Sylvia Noble, Wilfred Mott
Warnings: None.

Recced because: If our memories determine who we are (and Time Lords most of all...), what DO the bits we don't remember mean? This story is a beautiful exploration of the people the Doctor left behind, not quite as intact as they used to be, and most importantly - their "regular life" afterwards.

This is my last rec this week (and the longest fic!). I hope everyone's found at least one new story to enjoy!

And don't forget - if you've read and enjoyed any of the fics this week, leave a review (however brief) - such things are better than meat and drink to us fic authors.

Story: A Time of Grace
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 44439
Author's Summary: Following the Time War, Romana discovers that she has enemies she'd rather forget, friends she's never met, and a duty to the memory of her planet.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Gwen Cooper, Jack Harkness, K-9, Leela, Lucy Saxon, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Other Character(s), Romana II, Romana (Author Created)

Recced because: It's a brilliant post-Time War fic that combines Classic and New Who seamlessly.

There was a... thing, in the Tardis control room.

The Doctor had picked it up on a dark, ravaged moon in the Equinos system - one of those places he hadn’t really meant to go to, but had nonetheless found himself landing on after entering random coordinates into the Tardis’ systems. The last time he’d been there there had been the first tiny, delicate sparklings of life beginning to burst out on its icy, rocky surface. Now, nothing.

Nothing except this thing. The thing, as he’d begun to think of it. It was almost at the point of developing independent capitalization in his mind, and that was, in his experience, never a good sign.

The thing came up to about the top of his breast-bone, and was about as wide as his arms could reach around, though it tapered a bit at the top. When he first saw it he’d had the sick thought that it was a new kind of Dalek armour that had somehow survived the war, but closer inspection hadn’t borne that out. It was gold, but the shape and design of it was completely unlike their circular knobules and venting. It wasn’t made of dalekenium, anyway, but some other metal equally impervious to all the scans he’d subjected it to. The elemental make-up seemed somehow familiar, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

Story: Do I Dare to Eat a Peach?
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,481
Author's Summary: The Doctor's getting older, and not all his former companions are all that broken up about not staying with him forever. And that's not a bad thing.
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Liz Shaw
Warnings: None

Recced because: Traveling on his own – and moping about it on a beach – the Tenth Doctor encounters Liz Shaw, now much older and not fooled for a minute by the young man before her who calls himself "John Smith." It's a sweet, touching story, which makes it sound cloying, but it isn't; rather, it's a lovely portrait of two old friends reconnecting after having lost touch for many years.

Story: Time Present and Time Past
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3694
Author's Summary: The Doctor stops in on Brighton beach, and meets an old friend under very unusual circumstances.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor/Romana II
Warnings: None.

Recced because: To be honest, I'm not sure if this was jossed by "End of Time" or not (I think it's up for debate), but either way, this story is amazing. Set sometime after "Journey's End," the Tenth Doctor stops by Brighton beach and impossibly comes across Romana. What happens next is basically just a conversation, but what a conversation it is -- all about life, and death, and the Time War, and what it means to know that your time is coming to an end. It's also gorgeously written, and the last line is especially wonderful.

Story:Since Feeling Is First
Author: rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 988
Author's Summary: They never say forever, but they haven't stopped loving each other yet.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor/Romana II

Recced because: Anyone who knows me knows there's absolutely no way I would manage a week without reccing a Romana fic. It also helps that I absolutely adore everything I've read by [livejournal.com profile] rivendellrose, which means I knew exactly where to start. This fic captures the Eighth Doctor's sense of urgency and enthusiasm perfectly and the strength of the relationship they have without saying 'I love you'. It also absolutely supports my theory that the Doctor and Romana can say no to anyone but each other.

Story: A Learning Experience
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rivendellrose
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2862
Author's Summary: Romana accidentally lets slip a secret she’s been keeping from the Doctor, and he doesn’t take it very well. Fortunately, Romana knows how to get their relationship back on track.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Romana II
Warnings: Explicit sex

Recced because: I've read this fic several times and it never fails to make me smile. It's a good-natured take on the half-a-millenia age-difference between the Doctor and Romana. The Doctor's flustering, the discussion about ''underage'' partners and Romana's ability to turn the tables on the Doctor are a delight. Plus, there's a nice bit of smut at the end.

Story: Collisions
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1891
Author's Summary: Romana and Ace don't so much meet as collide. An explosion is bound to follow.
Characters/Pairings: Ace/Romana II
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's hot, it's awesome, and it's beautifully in character. I love the idea of this pairing and the author does such a good job of setting it up and making it believable. Delicious.

Story: Last Breath Before The Fall
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3003
Author's Summary: The night before she declares war on the Daleks, President Romana calls the Doctor home for counsel and companionship.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Romana II.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I have to admit, I just had to rec this and 'Rebuilding' as a pair because they're inextricably linked in my mind. Both deal with where 'The Apocalypse Element' left Romana, but in such different ways and both are really lovely fics for it. This one's a rather gorgeous Eight/Romana, it fudges canon a bit to do it but the results are rather more than worth the fudge. I love putting these two side by side and seeing what Brax and the Doctor make of Romana in this situation.

Story: Change of Plans
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2847
Author's Summary: Sarah decides to break out of the rut she's in with Harry... but the exciting new date she accepts for Valentine's isn't all that she hoped for.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan
Warnings: none

Recced because: I wanted to end the week with something sweet and romantic and this story fits the bill perfectly. Adorably in character and it puts a smile on my face every time. Enjoy!

Story: Best Served Hot
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: An inspiring tale in which Harry Sullivan finally wreaks vengeance on his most hated foe.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,100 words

Recced because: This is impossibly adorable. Harry takes Sarah out for a fancy seafood dinner, and orders...the clams, of course! The whole feel of the story is light and fresh, with crackling dialogue and some absolutely perfect lines, such as "All right, you little devils," he addressed the butter-drenched gastropods, "take a good look at me." Sarah and Harry's relationship is pitched just right as well, very sharp and yet sweet and teasing, and it's just such a joy to see them out together, and Harry earn his victory as best he knows how.

Story: One More Time
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: Harry visits Sarah Jane, and tries an old argument one last time.
Characters/Pairings: Harry Sullivan/Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith
Warnings: none
Word Count: ~2,600 words

Recced because: Just a fabulous story, sweet and gently funny and softly romantic. Harry is ever-so Harry in this, proposing to Sarah thirteen times already (including the one time he was drunk at a UNIT party), and trying just one more time, even if it's starting to really wear on his joints, all this kneeling before her. There are great mentions of other favourites (Brigadier Benton and (former) Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart wanting Sarah to accept so Harry will stop whining about it!) and Luke has a small, but spot-on role. I don't usually ship Sarah and Harry and still found myself cheering; this is a fantastic little gem.

Coming to you live from the Time Vortex, it's TARDIS Week! All week long, I'll be reccing fics wherein our favorite blue Police Box takes a starring (or at least active) role.

Hang on. It's going to be a bumpy ride -- because that's the way the Doctor likes it!

Story: Interlude and Storm
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: Adult-ish
Word Count: 11,236
Author's Summary: After the Time War and the Doctor’s subsequent regeneration, the Tardis decides to take advantage of their first landing (and a new use of her energy) to deal with a few concerns of her own.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: This fic explores a very long-term relationship that transcends friendship, romance or companionship. It has a slow build, a satisfying climax, and a poignant ending. There are some humorous moments, some awkward moments, and some intensely beautiful moments. The entire thing resounds with the feeling that these two have been together for a very long time, and know each other more intimately than the limitations of mortal flesh. I strongly recommend this for those of you who were hoping that Kylie's Astrid was something more than a human-shaped waitress.
