Story: a knife inside me
Author: Lady Mercury
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 430
Author's Summary: I won't let love disrupt, corrupt or interrupt me
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, River Song/Mels, Rory Williams
Warnings: Implied violence and discussion of death.

Recced because: It's an exceptionally chilling look into the mind of a girl bred to kill. It's an unnerving reminder that, as much as we may love her, River Song wasn't kidding when she called herself a psychopath. It's not a happy story, by any stretch of the imagination, and it's a bit unsettling, but in that way, it's a perfect fit for the character and her circumstances. It's well written and insightful, and we need more Mels-centric stories in the universe.

The teachers at school said she never did her homework, never bothered to practice. Well. That just wasn’t true. Mels was doing homework all the time, practicing to be something bigger, something better, schooling herself to channel cold like steel.

When she broke Shanna Poggit’s favorite doll, that was homework, was practice.

When she took the shining Year Three pet goldfish home for the weekend, and it never came back: practice.

Story: Making Amy
Author: Canaan
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 17,703
Author's Summary: In HonorH's The Wolf and the Mockingjay AU, Hunger Games victor Amy Pond is at a club, dancing in her underwear. This the story of her Games. Doctor Who/Hunger Games crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Mels, Jack Harkness, Other Characters
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing, Dubcon

Recced because: It's incredibly dark and well-written. Unlike HonorH's tale, it doesn't have a happy ending, but the ending it does provide is immensely powerful. I'd been hoping the author would finish in time for me to rec it this week on Calufrax, and what do you know? The ending popped up yesterday.

If you like the Hunger Games, read it. If you don't have prior knowledge of the Hunger Games, still read it if you like dark, AU fics, because it's brilliant, tragic, gritty, and disturbing, all wrapped up into one beautifully written package.

Capitol magic has made Amy beautiful again. The two smallest fingers of her left hand are taped to a jeweled splint while the bones heal, but she doesn't have a scar or blemish anywhere on her body. Her sunburn is gone, leaving nothing but sun-bronzed skin she knows she didn't come by honestly, because she has no tan lines. Her hair is clean and glossy, frothing around her shoulders in soft curls. She has nails again, shaped and painted. She's dressed in a long, white, sleeveless dress that flows in graceful folds down past her knees.

Jack says the dress is another goddess thing. It doesn't seem worth arguing. He paints her lying face last. It looks like there's something he wants to say, but in the end he just takes her hands, her beautiful, killing hands, and holds them gently in his own for a few moments before he leaves the room.

Story: A Promise of Forever
Author: bluedawn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 9206
Author's Summary: A mysterious blonde girl keeps showing up in each of the Doctor's lives, only staying long enough each time to save his life and slowly steal his hearts. By the time he figures out who she is, is it too late for their promise of forever?
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor/Rose; 1st Doctor, 2nd Doctor, 3rd Doctor, 4th Doctor, 5th Doctor, 6th Doctor, 7th Doctor, 8th Doctor, 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Donna Noble, Ian Chesterton, Sarah Jane Smith, Donna Noble, Barbara, Susan,
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Swearing, Non-Con (The final warning is tagged on Teaspoon, but I have yet to figure out why).

Recced because: Bluedawn's muti-era Doctor/Rose love stories are simply brilliant. The idea that the Doctor might have loved Rose throughout all of his lives is particularly appealing to me, and she captures just how bittersweet it might be to have them cross paths long before he's supposed to know her. Plus, every one of Doctor voices are unique and spot on, and Rose's interactions with each of them is priceless. Also, t's a very unusual post-Doomsday Ten/Rose reunion story.

“I ask again...who are you? What is your name? Why do you keep showing up in my life, my lives?” he asks, knowing that he probably will not receive an answer for his troubles. At least she spoke to him this time.

She merely shakes her head at him as she did in his second life and the sad smile returns.

“Can’t you stop it? Can’t you get out?” he asks, desperately hoping for both him and her that she can.

Although, it’s nice to have a defender, a sort of guardian angel, on Earth. Not that he needs her help. Of course not. But then again...

“Who says I want out?” she asks, steel replacing the sadness in her voice. “I made my choice, Doctor.” There is something in her voice when she says his name. Something that makes him nervous and excited at the same time. The air grows heavy and he has received no answers from the mysterious human. She will be gone in a second.

“What choice? When? Who are you?” He shouts a litany of questions at her, hoping she’ll answer even one.

Story: Conversion
Author: Cinta
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1239
Author's Summary: A distant human colony has been taken over by the Cybermen as a breeding colony. Every 3 years they return to convert 500 humans. This is my story.
Characters/Pairings: Original Character
Warnings: None

Recced because: There is something particularly eerie about this tale. Though it doesn't involve any of the usual suspects, instead focusing around an Original Character, it's still incredibly gripping and poignant. It provides great sensory detail and brilliant insight into the thoughts of a person who knows what being a Cyberman entails, but is being forcibly converted.

The Cyberman drops his hands to his sides and looks towards the alcove — he waits…

My temples throb slightly and I realize that I have not taken a breath. I gently sigh and loop my thumbs into the top of my pants. In a swift movement, I slide them down my legs. Still hunched over, I remove my remaining clothes before I suddenly blush with embarrassment.

I look up; he slowly scans the room before his eyes lock with mine again. I shield my body like an awkward teenager as I stand upright, completely naked. His head tilts slightly, almost curious by the sudden modesty I am showing. A naked woman meant nothing to him; the last sexual urge was scoured from his brain many years ago by the very machine I am about to enter. It is highly likely that the memories of his sexual past had been discarded shortly after conversion.

Hello, everyone! I'm very excited to be back reccing at Calufrax for the second time! My primary ship is Ten/Rose, so a chunk of my recs will involve that pairing, but I've also got several recs lined up for you involving 11th Doctor era characters...and one interesting look at the Cybermen conversion process. :)

So, without further ado...here's my first rec of the week!

Story: The First and Last Time
Author: Incurable Romantic
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 2382
Author's Summary: River Song senses her time with the Doctor is growing short on a visit to Paris. Short, sad, angsty one-shot.
Characters/Pairings: Eleven/River, with hints of Doctor/Rose
Warnings: Explicit Sex

Recced because: As a Doctor/Rose shipper who also really likes Eleven/River, this was a perfect mesh. It's a heartbreaking story, told from River Song's (3rd person) POV, and captures the bittersweet nature of her timey-wimey relationship with the Doctor. It also captures just how heart-wrenching it would be to love someone who still loves somebody else.

He picked up a bunch of flowers wrapped in white paper that were lying on the table. “These are for you,” he said, thrusting them at her. It wasn’t the first time she had received flowers from him. She hoped it wasn’t the first time he was giving them to her.

“Thank you,” she said coyly, a flirtatious raise of one eyebrow and a tiny smirk on her lips. “They’re lovely.”

And they were. Carnations and baby’s breath. Sometimes it was lilies, sometimes irises, often painted daisies, occasionally a huge bouquet of a mix of beautiful, fragrant flowers without names from far flung planets. But never roses, and occasionally she wondered why. She had never asked. It felt like cheating, somehow. Spoilers.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to rec for you all this past week! :) It's been a lot of fun, and I hope you've enjoyed reading these stories as much as I have! For my final rec, I give you a Doctor/Rose love story that spans across several eras. :)

Story: Shades of Blue ~ Cerulean
Author: bluedawn
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 46,842
Author's Summary: Trapped in the parallel universe, Rose finally thinks she's found the Doctor, but it isn't exactly the one she expects. She falls in love with him anyway. The first story in the "Past Present and Future" series.
Characters/Pairings: Jackie Tyler, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), Pete Tyler, Rose Tyler, The Doctor (8th)
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: This is the first story in one of my all time favorite series. It is the story that first introduced me to the idea of--and made me fall in love with--the Eighth Doctor/Rose pairing. The growth of their relationship--and the Doctor going through all sorts of assumptions and feelings along the way--is beautifully portrayed. So too is the underlying tension that comes with loving a Time Lord (and being a Time Lord in love) across multiple regenerations. I love the idea of a timeless love--a love that exists on some core level: soul mates. And the romantic in me loves the idea the the Doctor and Rose love each across all time and in all forms.

It's well written, with wonderful characterizations and raw emotions. It's a believable journey; Rose knows him, but he doesn't know her, and though their courtship is whirlwind, it isn't without its difficulties. Sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's a beautiful kind of sad--the kind of sad that only comes from knowing that there's a ticking time bomb on their relationship. Still, there's a light at the end of the tunnel; the series as a whole is about Rose's journey back to the Tenth Doctor, and her love for all the other versions of him she meets and re-meets along the way. The Eighth Doctor is the beginning, but he isn't the end--and that's what makes it all the more magical.

It's the beautiful beginning of an epic tale, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have!

Story: It's Not A Sonic
Author: clare009
Rating: Adult
Word Count:  482
Author's Summary:  The Doctor finds a new sonic screwdriver.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (11th), River Song, Rory Williams, Amy Pond
Warnings: None listed -- Adult (sexual) concepts

Recced because: The Doctor is adorably ignorant about certain aspects of human sexuality, and Amy and Rory's reaction is priceless. And really, only the Doctor could mistake a sex toy for a sonic screwdriver...

Story: Crossed Wires
Author: Palgrave
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3101
Author's Summary: In which Buffy makes an error of judgement, and really, the Doctor only has himself to blame walking around Sunnydale dressed like that. Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover.
Characters/Pairings: Other Character(s), Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I only have a cursory knowledge of Classic Who, but the Buffy fan in me was drawn to this particular piece. It's written from Buffy's (3rd person) POV, and the Doctor, as seen through the eyes of the Vampire Slayer, is a funny sight indeed. And given the Third Doctor's particularly Vampirific clothing style (which is definitely the butt of the joke in this piece), he is the perfect choice for this encounter. I love a well-done crossover, and this is a particularly clever and witty one.

Story: The Only Time
Author: roesloveddrugs
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 1477
Author's Summary: The only time he tells her he loves her is when he loses control with her.
Characters/Pairings: 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: Ten/Rose romance fic has, from the get-go, been my favorite to both read and write. This story is one of my absolute favorites, and was among one of my early finds on Teaspoon. It is erotic, but also emotionally evocative. It's both beautiful and bittersweet. It's not easy to write smut and capture the essence of the characters, but this author does so beautifully. And while the setting for this is sex, it's the underlying feelings that make it so poignant. It presents a picture of the pair in a vulnerable moment--sweet and loving, yet so very fleeting.

On today's agenda: Another Dalek story!

Story: Other People's Pets
Author: ABadPlanWellExecuted
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 10,477
Author's Summary: Rose decides to keep the Dalek instead of Adam. The Doctor is not amused.
Characters/Pairings: Adam Mitchell, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Other Character(s), Rose Tyler, Slitheen, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (9th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is probably one of the funniest fics I have ever read. It's complete and utter crack!fic, and had me in stitches from beginning to end. Basically, at the end of "Dalek", Rose decides to adopt the Dalek with her DNA as a pet. From there, there's spectacularly funny times, as the Dalek (named Pedro, as all Daleks should be) is highly protective of Rose and wants to weed out her potential suitors (The Doctor and Jack included!). Even the post-Doomsday epilogue is more funny than sad, thanks to the author's incredible penchant for humor!

Story: Everything But the Kitchen Sink
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1020
Author's Summary: Another important lesson Oswin learns is that creeping up on the Doctor while he sleeps and shouting, "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" in his ear is only funny to her.
Characters/Pairings: Oswin Oswald, The Doctor (11th)
Warnings: None

Recced because: After meeting Oswin, who doesn't want to see the Doctor have a Dalek companion? From our short introduction to her, at least, the characterization is spot on. The author captures Oswin's flirty quips brilliantly. It's a quirky, clever story about what this unusual pairing could look like, and my absolute favorite Oswin Oswald story so far!

Story: The Physics of Friendship (New London High #2)
Author: TimeLord1
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6046
Author's Summary: New friends, old enemies, and a tough guy with a secret talent. Oh, and one diagrammed sentence.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Donna Noble, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), River Song, Rory Williams, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The Doctor (11th), The Doctor (8th), The Doctor (9th), The Master (Simm)
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: This is the story that made me fall in love with the New London High series. It's one of the most innovative, captivating AUs I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The author seamlessly inserts the characters of Doctor Who into the setting of a teen drama, without losing any of the fantastic characterizations that makes them unique in the first place. It cleverly blends elements of canon, yet re-imagines the show as something entirely new, and entirely wonderful.

There's a blossoming 9/Rose love story, a super-shy and awkward Rory, a flirty teenaged Jack, and even a nod to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And, because every high school drama needs its villains, there's Harry Saxon and his evil minions, the Dalecki brothers.

Excerpt )

Before you go off to read it, here's a quick lowdown on the Doctors at New London High. All of the Doctors are related to one another, and all of their names are variants on 'John Smith.'

Evan is Eight, John is Nine, Sean is Ten, and Ian is Eleven. These four, along with the majority of their companions, are high school students. The other Doctors are parents and uncles, and Sarah Jane is Evan and John's mother.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did, and, if you do, feel free to let the author know!
