Story: Even Symmetry
Author: Camilla Sandman ([livejournal.com profile] misscam)
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1,209
Author's Summary: The Universe is good at illusions, that he knows. It gives life and death both, and somehow that is meant to make it even and balanced and he rages against it. Nothing is even for death. Nothing is even for Gallifrey. And for Rose?
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (9th), Rose Tyler
Warnings: n/a
Recced because: Some of the fics I re-read are because I love how they fill in details or extend the narratives about characters whose stories I just want to see continue (both of the fics I have recommended so far fit in this category). This is not one of those fics; the facts mentioned in this fic stick to those revealed in the episodes of the first season reboot of NuWho. Rather, I love this fic because it gets to the heart of the Ninth Doctor and the whole of the first season beautifully, exploring who this Doctor is, what drives him, and how he changes over the course of the season. The character study of the Doctor is worth reading on its own terms, but what sets this fic apart is how beautifully (and concisely) well developed it is--the prose is crisp yet lyrical, and the last line is just perfect.

Story: Happily Ever Afters (Are Not Your Absolution)
Author: Camilla Sandman
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5,401
Author's Summary: There aren't always happy endings, even with a time machine. (Doctor Who/Battlestar Galactica crossover)
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Martha/Lee Adama, Adama/Roslin, implied Lee/Kara
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is a beautiful and meditative fixit for parts of the BSG finale (and sorry, if you aren't a fan of the rebooted series, you won't be able to follow along). Ten changes a bit of history, Martha and Lee commiserate over unattainable loves, and Adama and Roslin celebrate a new lease on life. There's so much to love here: Sandman's deft touch with the characters; the themes of love, sex, and death that twine through every part of the story; and best of all, the way the two series mesh together in a way that feels true to both.

Story: Today's Not Over Yet
Author:Camilla Sandman
Rating: All Ages
Author's Summary: Tomorrow, the world is ending, and today, he is happy. [Eighth Doctor with special guest stars.]
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor (with brief cameo by kiddie Rose)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's beautiful.
Essentially, it's a 'What Would You Do If You Had One Day To Live' fic, but gives it a Time Lord twist.
If you had all time and space at your disposal, what would you do on your last day of freedom? The Eighth Doctor travels and sees all the beautiful things that earth has to offer throughout history in the span of a single day that lasts centuries.
Really, really stunning. Misscams stuff is always beautiful, and philosophical I think.
Honestly, I thing we could all use something a little cheerful after yesterday's special!

Story: Time's Secret
Author: Camilla Sandman ([livejournal.com profile] misscam)
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2867
Author's Summary: There are bad days and there are bad days, a careful study in everything going wrong that can go wrong. Rose Tyler is about to have one and she'll never want to change one glorious moment of it.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose
Warnings: None

Nine and Rose have a superlatively Murphy's Law day on an alien planet, complete with angry mobs, a lost TARDIS, killer storms, and living rocks. It is quite spot-on for the sort of life they lead, and has a wonderful balance of humor, adventure, and wonderment. Short, sweet, and thoroughly re-readable, Time's Secret is one of those stories that always leaves me smiling.

Story:Watson's Ghost
Author: Camilla Sandman
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 15309
Characters: Ten/Rose
Author's Summary: Wherein the Doctor and Rose face a murder charge, Rose walks with ghosts, the Doctor tries for life and an alliance changes its nature.

Recced because: A lyrical, inventive tale that effortlessly melds the traditional Doctor Who plot line of Our Heroes being falsely accused of murder with the more sensual, empathic and romantic overtones that fanfiction affords. On a planet where the dead linger as ghosts in the minds of the living, Rose and the Doctor need to play their own version of Watson and Holmes to solve a murder, and more importantly, to rescue a people from the trap of their past. Camilla Sandman writes in a fluid style but still avoids over-introspection and purple prose, to tell the story, not just of the Tenth Doctor and Rose, but of the culture and people of Nattdvalve. The result is a haunting tale echoing across an alien landscape, that immerses the reader in a creative new world and enriches the characters we already know and love.

Recced because:
I love sweeping, elegiac Time War fics that make me cry.  This is not one of those fics, but it’s magnificent in a different way.

It’s almost time for the Doctor to end the Time War, but he’s busy seizing the day in ways that are sweet, silly, and very much the Doctor.  The fic conveys the weight of the terrible event that is to come, but it’s hopeful too.  The scene that explains how he found the wisdom to not just sit around being emo is perfect in every way.

Author: Camilla Sandman
Rating: all ages
Word Count: 890
Author's Summary: At the end, there's her.
Characters/Pairings: Doctor/Rose/TARDIS
Warnings: Character Death
Recced because: Each word and phrase of this short, carefully written story works. For me, that means I cry every time I read it. Sometimes it's in grief, sometimes it's in relief, sometimes it's in joy. But I always cry. That's the kind of power the story has.

Coming to you live from the Time Vortex, it's TARDIS Week! All week long, I'll be reccing fics wherein our favorite blue Police Box takes a starring (or at least active) role.

Hang on. It's going to be a bumpy ride -- then again, when is it not?

Story: Comes the Wolf
Author: Camilla Sandman
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1196
Author's Summary: Kiss the storm, Rose Tyler. Kiss it before the wolf comes.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose/TARDIS
Warnings: None

Recced because: I love Camilla Sandman's writing, and this is an excellent example of the tightness of her prose. She doesn't waste words, and is able to convey deep emotion to a greater extent and in a shorter space than many other authors I've read. This fic is a brief snapshot into the possible complexity of the relationship between the three characters, playing with the archetypes of Bad Wolf and the Oncoming Storm. It's hard to imagine how a fic could be both urgent and lyrical, but this one manages it.

Story: Five Times After Goodbye
Author: Camilla Sandman
Rating: Teen
Author's Summary: Twenty years after she said one goodbye, she wonders if this is a second.
Characters/pairings: Tenth Doctor/Martha Jones
Warnings: None

Recced because: Because I love the idea of the Doctor visiting any companion after they've left him. In this particular story, he visits them whilst they're still on board but because he knows he's going to lose them at one point, he still visits to make sure they're all right. However, I think he's visting them more for his sake then for their's. The concept of this fic, in my opinion, could work with most companions which is what makes it so special. I especially love the ending to this one and how it brings it right back to their first meeting.
