Well it’s Day Two of the fic picking! Last time I was doing this I mentioned a fondness for Big Finish’s Doctor Who Audios and that delightful Edwardian Adventuress, Charlotte Pollard (known as Charley to Friends) and her friend the Eighth Doctor. And just as last time I showed you a peek into a missing moment aboard the TARDIS, here’s another!

###

Story:  Plum Pudding
Author: moonmama

Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2861 Words
Author's Summary: Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without it. Immediately after the events of The Chimes of Midnight, the Doctor tries cooking. Charley tries to understand the nature of love.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Charley Pollard
Warnings: Some spoilers for the story The Chimes of Midnight.

Recced because: Well The Chimes of Midnight is my favourite Eighth Doctor story ever and whilst I’d admit some knowledge of that tale wouldn’t hurt before reading this it’s still a great tale – all you need to know that in the aftermath of their most recent excursion, the Doctor’s taken a shine to try baking Plum Pudding in the TARDIS (which considering its usage in the previous tale Charley finds shocking). And this of course leads to some fun kitchen based antics as the console each other over the weird temporal circumstances they previously experienced. Add a dash of romance and you’re all set!

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. First off I’d like to apologise for this rather late entry – having opted to do this week I immediately realised it was the one where I’m out of the house every weekday from 9am to 6pm for my placement work – not I admit an unusual practice for everyone but as a student it is for me! Still, shouldn’t be too difficult to stick on some great Recs from as many eras as possible right? And to begin here’s a possible meeting between an old friend and a Doctor coping from loss, not all that long ago… And as always, please leave a kind word in the reviews if you liked it! :)

Story: Fireside
Author: TS Wheaton
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2883 Words
Author's Summary: Devastated after the loss of Donna, the Doctor, soaked from the pouring rain, seeks solace with an old friend, whom he hasn't seen in a very, very long time.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright
Warnings: Maybe a little pinch of Angst but nothing serious.

Recced because: For a number of reasons I love this short story – there’s a reunion with one of the first and best companions in its long history (and I seriously think that Steve should consider contacting the brilliant William Russell whilst he’s still with us) but more than that, it ties directly into the sombre, broken Doctor we’ve got directly after Journey’s End, and there's some of that on Ian's end too. There’s a range of nice subtle references to Ian’s past adventures with the original Doctor and as a change it’s written in a script format, which is a writing style I’ve often considered trying myself. I hope you enjoy it yourselves!

From comedy to dark AU's... one of of the most fun (and disturbing) questions in fanfiction is to ask what might have happened if things went differently for the Doctor and his companions... and here's a decidedly dark turn on one of my favourite Doctor Who stories ever written. I hope you've liked my fic recs and I hope to take up the post again down the line sometime. Til then! :)

Story: Plaything
Author: Daystar Searcher
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3502 Words
Author's Summary: Pyramids of Mars AU: The Doctor is forced to take Sutekh's offer and save Earth, at the price of the rest of the universe. This is the aftermath.
Characters/Pairings: Four/Sarah, Brigadier, Sutekh.
Warnings: Lotta Angst plus some self-harm, character death and dub con. Hankies at the ready people.

Recced because: Yikes. This is a moving and powerful one-shot which sees Four go through the grinder as he lives with the consequences of saving his favourite world and of course his dear Sarah Jane at the expense of his very people and the billions of worlds he has travelled to before. The Doctor gets decidedly dark in this one but he's still definitely the Fourth Doctor we remember, abeit a haunted one - a tribute to this fine writer. Add one of the most heart-felt Doctor/Sarah moments I've ever read and this is a must for all Fourth Doctor fans.
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Well it's my final day of fic picking and I committed the greivous sin yesterday of forgetting to rec, for which I give my humble apologies. To say sorry I'm doing two recs in one! First up, we're visiting one of my personal favourite, unbeloved Doctors - Sixy! And just where did he get that terrible coat?!

###

Story: The Secret Origin of the Phantasmagoria Anomalistic Coat
Author: Steve61
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3502 Words
Author's Summary: Peri learns why the Doctor wears his unusual multi-coloured coat.
Characters/Pairings: Sixth Doctor, Peri
Warnings: None
Recced because: If there's anything which makes a Sixth Doctor and Peri story fun it's when Six sounds egoy enough and Peri's has the right level of snark and charm when it comes to her talks with the Doctor. Six and Peri is one of my favourite TARDIS crews for this pretty much alone and its in full force here when the Doctor takes Peri to a world to answer the question - is there anywhere in the universe where his coat would be fashionable? The short answer is yes, the long answer... well you'll see!
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Welcome to Day Five of the fic picking from me! If there's one aspect of the Doctor Who Expanded Universe I adore it's the Big Finish Audios with their grand epic new adventures for the surviving classic Doctors. And as well as several old favourite companions returning like Nyssa, Peri and Ace, we also get some new ones who are every bit as entertaining and engaging. Of all of them I'd say my two favourites are Evelyn Smythe and the companion in this story, Charley Pollard!

###

Story: Coming Home
Author: Howlcastle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3867
Author's Summary: Charley Pollard's first introduction to the TARDIS. Set after Storm Warning.
Characters: Eighth Doctor, Charley, 'Ramsay'
Warnings: None

Recced because: As the author here writes and for myself for many years I bemoaned the fact that Charley - an self-proclaimed Edwardian Adventuress who'd joined the Eighth Doctor onboard the airship R101 in 1930 together with a flying reptile named after a Prime Minister - never got to view the TARDIS for the first time on audio - by the time we heard her next she'd got used to the ship. So Howlcastle here wonderfully takes that idea and makes a lovely lengthy one-shot with her learning all about the TARDIS and its occupant. Suffice to say that if you haven't heard Storm Warning it might not appeal to you as much but for Charley fans like me it's a real treat!

Yesterday being the 48th Anniversary (and I never mentioned it? - shame on me!), and today being Thanksgiving (which being from Blighty I don’t celebrate – no Turkey till Christmas for me!)  I’m reminded of the thankful fact that we’ll be having the Eleventh Doctor back for Christmas… but no Amy and Rory? Awwww. Or no River? Well that won’t do at all. Let’s have a fic to make us feel better, hey?

###

Story: Reasons Why
Author: SarahNoH
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2918 Words
Author's Summary: Rory needs to talk with someone, and the TARDIS knows just the right person. Set between The Girl Who Waited and The God Complex.
Characters/Pairings: River Song, Rory Williams
Warnings: None

Recced because: Well after the terrible choice he had to make in The Girl Who Waited, we all knew that Rory would be more than a bit down in the dumps. Here the TARDIS lets him visit the Storm Cage where he can have a chat with… well you can guess right? Sarah here writes both Rory and his darling daughter wonderfully well, drawing on both their previous encounter in Let’s Kill Hitler and the recent tragedy of The Girl Who Waited. In short this is a solid one-shot fiction to read so check it out!
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Hello and welcome to another day of fiction suggestion. Some of my favourite pieces of Who fiction probably have to be those which feel like they’re taken right from the midst of a season itself with an established TARDIS crew and the influences of previous and later television stories maybe creeping in. This happens to be one of them!

###

Story: Collector’s Item
Author: wmr
Rating: All Ages
Word Count:  6006 Words
Author's Summary: The Doctor understands how multiple timelines work. Rose wants to.
Characters/Pairings: Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, OC's.
Warnings: None

Recced because:  Wmr writes almost solely for the Ninth Doctor and she knows how to write both him and Rose Tyler well. This story is set between Aliens of London and Dalek and not only feels just like an actual TV adventure but the tendrils of Father’s Day are foreshadowed.  There’s also the usage of a famous historical event which I’m amazed the show has never adapted before! I don’t want to say any more for fear of spoiling it, so please read it and imagine its 2005 all over again…
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Hey again folks! You know I always love fanfics where characters from one era of a show or universe get to interact with those of another. I also love Doctor Who stories where we get to see what companions have been up to since they left the TARDIS! Well the good news is that this one has both!

###

Story:  Two Guys, Two Girls and a Dinner
Author:  RobotRollCall
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 6308 Words
Author's Summary: Marital wisdom, advice on stain removal, and ultimately hilarity ensue when companions past and present meet in a diner.
Characters/Pairings: Amy/Rory, Ben/Polly, Eleventh Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: As the author themselves points out, there are really not enough stories with Ben and Polly in them! This is a fairly simple premise – the male companions meet up and discuss their wives and time the TARDIS, the girls do the same and of course the Doctor gets to see some long-lost friends – yet Robot writes these characters so brilliantly that you don’t mind. Plus comparing stories about different fish people and Cyber types is always a fun conversation piece.

Hello and welcome once more to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. It really doesn’t seem that long since the last time I took this awesome responsibility back in early September when Doctor Who and Torchwood were both rounding off and I was a lot freer than I am now, as since then I’ve started my rather extensive postgraduate degree. Still, can’t be so difficult to find some quality fics from all eras of Who, right?

Now to begin we’ll start with some episode tweaking within the still much loved Tenth Doctor era…

###

Story:
A Complicated Event In Time And Space
Author: Aldanon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 53,493 Words
Author's Summary: It took almost twenty hours to tow the Earth back home after saving all of reality from the Daleks. Set during Journey's End, this story is a compilation of events that took place in the TARDIS and on the Earth in those hours.
Characters/Pairings: Ten II/Rose, Martha/Mickey, Tenth Doctor,  Donna Noble, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jackie Tyler, Rhys Williams, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings:  A fair potion of Angst and Hurt/Comfort for certain characters and a mild case of Whump.

Recced because: As a fan boy and someone who came into Who in the days before the New Series and the suggestion of certain pairings and the like, I tend to view certain kinds of fan fiction warily. However, whilst I’ve always loved the idea of Martha and Mickey getting together I came to love Aldanon’s protrayal of setting up Rose with the duplicate Ten – here, she’s elected to suggest that rather than mere minutes it took many hours for the Earth to be dragged back to its rightful position, leading to the possibility of talks and interactions which Russell denied us. While Ten II/Rose and Mickey/Martha are the main focuses here all the TARDIS crew get a piece of the action. Better yet, this lengthy fic expands into two sequel works which focus on the lives of these two pairings afterwards. In short this is a big read but well worth it!
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Ok, so my last day happens to be September 11th – ten years ago today we were all waking up to a very different kind of world than we had lived in previously. I considered trying to find something which might reflect this but on hindsight I think it’s better if we have something quiet and thoughtful to finish my run. In any case I really thank you for joining me this past week, for any comments you’ve sent my way, and I may well be up here reccing again soon! Bye for now!

Story: From Can To Can’t
Author: Mandragora
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 5286
Author's Summary: The Doctor teaches Ace why he can and can’t interfere with history.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Ace
Warnings: Mild swearing, otherwise fine.

Recced because: Mandragora uses the Seventh Doctor to tell the logical question – if you had a time machine, wouldn’t it be tempting to use it to change history for the better? Or could that attempt make things much worse? And are there parts of history which can be altered over others. In light of the recent Let’s Kill Hitler episode this story manages to tackle that a little more expertly together without treading too much on what’s been said on the subject of changing the past. Seven and Ace are firmly in character and this makes for a great character piece between this much beloved TARDIS crew of mine.

It’s my penultimate day of fiction gathering and of course Doctor Who is on tonight (well for me anyway). But since we’ve already had a visit from Amy and Rory, let’s see what the Fourth Doctor and Leela are up to instead!

Story: Running All The Time
Author: Sigyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1908
Author's Summary: The Doctor had been treating Leela like a student, trying to teach her history and her heritage, how to see the universe through the lens of scientific truth, rather than superstition and ritual. He was slowly stripping away a lifetime of savage brutality, in an attempt to reveal the brilliant and singular woman he knew her to be. But he began to suspect his one-side training was robbing her of something just as precious as her intellect.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Leela
Warnings: None

Recced because: Leela was one of those Companions which as a child I didn’t totally ‘get’ at the time since I saw her in the odd story as merely ‘some sort of savage type’. Whilst this is the case the truth is that if you look past that and her appeal for the Dads in the audience she’s a fantastic companion because of her view on the universe. Leela isn’t stupid but merely ignorant of aspects of society she has never seen and yet often some of her lines on the show demonstrated a keen mind interested to understand and give her own opinions. This story is great because Sigyn takes the Doctor’s desire to educate her as seen during the show and display that it is important that Leela should retain parts of her old life as much as embrace new ones. In short - the Doctor can learn from Leela as much as she can from him. This very idea has made Leela one of my favourite companions as an adult and this fanfic a clear demonstration of that fact.

Hey everyone, it’s September 9th! You know what that means? We’re 107 days away from Christmas! And what better way to celebrate the festive season way, way too early than by fourteen tales of Winter Wonder with – get this – EVERY Doctor, Sarah Jane, Torchwood and K9?

Story: Christmas
Author: darkestboy
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 20,432
Author's Summary: A collection of Christmas themed stories throughout Time and Space. Spoilers from all of Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and K9.
Characters/Pairings: 9th Doctor, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jackie Tyler; 5th Doctor, Peri Brown; 10th Doctor, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, The Cybermen; K9 Mark 2, Alistair Gryffen; 7th Doctor, Ace, Mel Bush, Sabalom Glitz; 8th Doctor, Grace Holloway; 4th Doctor, Leela, Romana II; Jack Harkness, Alonso Frame; 3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw; 1st Doctor, Steven Taylor; 11th Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright; Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, Jo Jones, Santiago Jones; 2nd Doctor, Ben Jackson, Polly Wright; 6th Doctor, Evelyn Smythe.
Warnings: None

Recced because: darkestboy is one of those authors who has done the seemingly impossible and written fan fiction for nigh-on every corner of the Doctor Who Universe, yet he has yet to receive any significant recognition for it, which is a tad unfair. This collection in question via a logical theme is a perfect example of this fact and every short story is great, ranging from the lost Christmas for Rose Tyler, to Winter reunions with Grace Holloway and Liz Shaw to the 1st Doctor dressed as Santa Claus! A fine introduction to this author’s work. The idea of a set of stories for all the Doctors is inspired too and he’s already started a second one for spooky Halloween. Indeed I’m thinking of trying something similar myself! Hope you like this!
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
We’re onto day four of the Metaltron Marathon of Whofic picking. The penultimate episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day is on today for those in Blighty (whilst you lucky Americans get to see the final one tomorrow) so I figured I should pick something today of a Torchwood number. And what’s better than a nice dose of AU harking back from the very first series?

Story: Live In Infamy
Author: livii
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1425
Author's Summary: Things did get worse after Pearl Harbour. AU for 1x12, Captain Jack Harkness.
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Tosh, Owen, Gwen, Ianto.
Warnings: Some Angst and eventual Character Death.

Recced because: This is actually an AU I considered writing myself once but never got round to, but in all honesty I’d say livii had done as great and sombre a take on this logical AU – what if Jack and Tosh had to remain in 1941 after all – and sees these two characters go through the slow path together, tearful and happy moments both. It’s a dark story but it also has one of my favourite rare pairings – Jack/Tosh. This very episode this story branches out of gave them some nice chemistry together and it forever made me wonder afterwards what this would have been like as a pairing, much as I adore Owen/Tosh and Jack/Ianto.

Rec: Scream

Metaltron here again! For day three of my domination of all things fiction on here we’re zipping back to the Troughton era for a nice little ficlet on one of my favourite undervalued Doctor Who Companions.

Story: Scream
Author: alouzon
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1181
Author's Summary: Victoria screams a lot. But we already know that.
Characters/Pairings: 2nd Doctor, Jamie/Victoria
Warnings: None

Recced because: I often like to sing the praises of un-beloved companions like Victoria, and it seems the case that one criticism of her character by others can be her tendency to scream blue murder. Here though alouzon writes about that very supposed in-perfection and its history in Victoria’s life even before meeting the Doctor, the very fact that anyone would scream at the sort of things she runs into with the Doctor in the TARDIS, and brings it all down to a sweet little quiet moment of romance for her and Jamie. I do love Zoe with Jamie in the series but it is my opinion that Jamie and Victoria are quite the perfect match – the brave and protective highlander and his English lass with a determined resolve behind that seemingly timid, flighty facade.

Hello for Day 2 of Metaltron’s marvellous fiction picks! Yesterday we had Ian and Barbara’s attempts at dress-up - today we zoom from the first Companion/Companion Pairing to the most recent doing something not wholly dissimilar!

Story: Dressing Up
Author: RobinC
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 4909
Author's Summary: They’re on their honeymoon, having fantastic sex, and travelling the universe with a 900 year-old alien as their pilot and tour guide. Do they really need to pretend to be other people?
Characters/Pairings: Amy/Rory
Warnings: References to past pretend dub-con/non-con, violence and a dash of angst. Spoilers for The Pandroica Opens/The Big Bang.

Recced because: I adore Amy/Rory through thick and thin and whilst I tend to avoid adult fics for the sake of uncertainty over content, RobinC writes this pairing really well and here takes the basis of the newlywed couple’s off-screen antics in the ‘Honeymoon Suite’ just prior to the start of A Christmas Carol and reveals why exactly Rory was back in the Roman Centurion outfit. Suffice to say without spoiling things that it larks back to Rory’s decisions in The Pandorica Opens and paints it all in a retrospective light for dear Amy. I love this couple and long may their sexy zany relationship appear in fan fiction! :)
[identity profile] derekmetaltron.livejournal.com
Hello and welcome to another week of fan fiction picking here on Calufrax ! I am James or ‘Derek Metaltron’, your guide for the next few days. This is the first time I’ve volunteered to do this selection picking and I hope that I can point your way to some quality fiction – I happen to be a fan of every era of Doctor Who and its numerous spin-offs so you can expect some nice variety in material on key, ranging from beloved authors to one or two I think have never been featured before and deserve a look in! And as always, try and leave a nice review for them! :)

We kick proceedings off with some fun between the original pairing in Doctor Who – Ian/Barbara!

Story: The Gentle Art of Seduction
Author: Pendragon
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1477
Author's Summary: Ian and Barbara’s attempts at historical sexual role-playing don’t go quite according to plan.
Characters/Pairings: Ian/Barbara
Warnings: Only very mild sexual references despite the summary.

Recced because: This is an author who writes Ian and Barbara brilliantly and it shows, plus seeing the lives of the TARDIS Companions after their departure is always fun, particularly in light of Russell’s recent reveal into their lives in SJA’s Death of the Doctor. Plus it references all the various historical periods Ian and Barbara visited in a flirty humorous way. It was actually in this slot a tough pick between this and Pendragon’s other great Ian/Barbara fic ‘The TARDIS Meddler’, also worth a look. I would love to see this author do some more First Doctor era fiction in the future!
