My next rec is pure Who, featuring Martha and Tish Jones and the aftermath of The Master.

Story: Through the Spaces of the Dark
Author: Twitchbell
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2702
Author's Summary: The present collides head first with the Year That Never Was: Martha and Tish come face to face with the painful memory of a day when the Master changed the rules.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Other Character(s), The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm), Tish Jones
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's easy to overlook the human cost of the Doctor's career. Here Martha helps Tish Jones deal with some memories of her captivity on the Valiant.

A short extract )

I'm travelling over Easter weekend so I've set up my remaining recs as timed postings for Friday and Saturday, in case I can't get web access. Apologies in advance if anything goes wrong.

Hello there! My name is Lamia, and I'll be your reccer for the week! I'm notoriously inconsistent with my interests so there'll probably be a reasonable mixture here of classic Who, old Who, funny Who, angsty Who, and shippy Who. I hope you like the stories, by wonderful people, as much as I enjoyed them.

Story: Trust Me (I'm a Lying Liar Who Lies)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] elisi
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 22,082
Author's Summary: In which River is enigmatic, Martha is frustrated, Mickey is intrigued and the Doctor is a Pond.
Characters/Pairings: Amy Pond, Francine Jones, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Other Character(s), River Song, River Song, Rory Williams, The Doctor (11th), Tish Jones
Warnings: Swearing, action

Recced because: This is one author that I go back to over and over again. Seriously! Go give her love. That said, the reason I chose this fic in particular is because of the range of things it covers that just ring 'Doctor Who' in my books. Martha being awesome (another reason is because of her qualification this week in [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness), the Doctor not being perfect, people being people and difficult and just... real. And warm. It's got laughs, and it's got bits that really take out your heart and stamp on it, but it's also got heart, and really, that's what a fic should be all about... It's a long one to start, but well worth the time to sit down, maybe with a cup of tea, and drink it all in.

Hi all! *waves awkwardly*
So my name is Bianca, a whovian hailing from the Netherlands, and I'll be reccing for you this week (:
I understand that for a part of you it's still Sunday, but well.. let's just view this as a bonus than, shall we? ;)

Besides, if you're going to read this fic (and I think you should) you're going to need the extra time...

Story: Terminal Decay
Author: Unslinky
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 3,071,407 (yes, you read that right - this is not a typo)
Author's Summary: Set shortly after The Planet of the Dead. AU to everything Doctor Who and Torchwood after that.
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, K-9, Leo Jones, Luke Smith, Martha Jones, Martha Jones, Mickey Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, The Doctor (10th), The TARDIS, Tish Jones, Tom Milligan, Torchwood (I've only copied the list of characters Unslinky indicated on Teaspoon because I do not want to spoil what happens in the story! :))
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Explicit Violence, Swearing

Recced because: This fic took Unslinky nearly two years to complete and it has just over a 1,000 chapters. I came across it when the fic had been growing for some time already, but rapidly caught up and then followed it all the way to the end. I realise three million words may seem rather daunting, but trust me when I say that once you start reading this fic, it becomes part of your life shockingly easily and quickly. (I'm rereading it at the moment - worth every step of the way.)

So what makes this fic so captivating? There is more Doctor!Whump out there in which he (nearly) dies [keeping open the outcome so as not to spoil you guys], after all, and those are not as epically long as this fic. There are several reasons.
One is that Unslinky's characterisation is amazing. Unslinky knows how people work, what makes them tick, what makes them laugh, and she manages to write the dilemmas that come with being/caring for a dying alien, the last of his kind, in a way that is incredibly realistic. There are no good or bad guys in this story - everyone has two sides. There will be moments when you really hate a particular character (at least I did), but later that will always be put into perspective because the reasons for their behaviour are revealed and you suddenly understand that even though sometimes people say or do things that make you want to punch them in the face, they're not all bad. Every story has two sides and nothing is ever only black or only white.
That brings me to my second reason: realism. The Doctor is suffering from a degenerating disease, which will kill him if nothing is done, and a lot of people (see character list and then some) get involved. That means there are a lot of angles to be written, a lot of point of views, tensions, opinions - not to mention that an illness as seriously as the one from which the Doctor suffers in this story simply can't be fixed in two or three chapters. The illness is described very naturally, over a period of time, and Unslinky gives us readers wonderful medical details and descriptions without making it too brainy too understand - and then of course there is also the psychological side. The Doctor has to accept that he is ill and that he needs help, he bonds to people in entirely new ways, but the other characters are also affected - they have doubts, are hurt, hope, work, scream, cry (everything you might expect of someone with a close friend who is dying). Rather than rush through events towards a happy ending [or not!], Unslinky isn't afraid of putting the main storyline on hold to be introspective or have a flashback. This doesn't impede the story at all, however, but rather adds to it, shaping the characters and making them incredibly real.
In the end, this didn't feel like a story, but rather as a journey. It has made me look at some characters in an entirely new way and by the time I got to the end I didn't think 'oof, I've finally read it', but rather 'why is this over already?'.

Well, it’s my last rec of the week – I’ve had a great time finding a variety of stories to recommend. Now, for those who love the sugary goodness of a well crafted crack!fic, I’ll leave you with a song.

Story: Doctor Who, Broadway Style! Les Miserables
Author: azriona
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 3476
Author's Summary: The Master is plotting the enslavement of the Earth, and the Doctor is in a wheelchair. Whoever will be able to stop him? Martha Jones, that’s who! Featuring a lovely duet between Rose Tyler (yes, Rose Tyler) and the Doctor. It’s not just Crack!Fic, it's Musical Crack!Fic!
Characters/Pairings: The Tenth Doctor, The Master (Simms), Francine Jones, Clive Jones, Tish Jones, Lucy Saxon, Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Tom Milligan, Jack Harkness,
Warnings:. none

Recced because: The utter brilliance of this musical crack!fic is right there in the title. Les Miz fans, be prepared to start humming "At the End of the Day."

Story: Don’t Think You Knew you Were In this Song
Author: azn_jack_fiend
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5769
Author's Summary: Mickey and Jack meet again after the events of Children of Earth. Mickey considers how his life has changed since their first meeting, how far he's traveled since then, and wonders what he'll say to Jack. In between, he remembers a long, strange dinner party with the Jones family.
Characters/Pairings: Mickey/Martha, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones’ family
Warnings:. none

Recced because: Mickey is a hard character to get a sense of as a whole person, but this story captures him brilliantly. It shows how and why Mickey matured during the series, and how he’s also still the same man. After reading this, the romance between Martha and Mickey makes perfect sense to me. The story also captures the lingering effects of the Year on the Jones’ family – how far they’ve come, and how they are still damaged. It’s also interesting seeing Jack through Mickey’s eyes. Mickey is the one person on Earth who knew Jack before he was mortal, and it gives him a unique perspective on the Captain.

Story: Bubbles
Author: mamfidd82
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 11,400
Author's Summary: Martha Jones and the no good, very bad day. With big dresses, mud, banter, a manual called 'So You Lack Bridezilla Genes!', wellington boots, Cheeky Walking Fishy People, and space snot.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Tom, with cameos by Francine and Tish
Warnings: None.

Recced because: And now for something completely different! This story is, in short, hysterical. Poor Martha starts out having a bad day when she forgets she agreed to shop for wedding dresses with her mum and sister - and then the Doctor shows up and it's all downhill from there. Need a pick-me-up to get over the middle of the week? This is your fic.

Story: with her own wings
Author: Branwyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1859
Author's Summary: Martha was once the Doctor's maid. Now the Doctor seems to have become Martha's secretary.
Characters/Pairings: Tenth Doctor, Martha Jones, Francine Jones, Tish Jones
Warnings: none

Recced because: So, it's after Last of the Time Lords and Martha has left the TARDIS. However, the Doctor still has her mobile. His conversations with the people who phone looking for Martha are humorous, as well as poignant. My favorite bit is the part where he gives her friend Vicky some unsolicited advice.

Story: Innocence Bound
Author: Danse Macabre
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 15,616
Author's Summary: AU of my story 'Return To Innocence'. The machine that converted Ianto mysteriously breaks.
Characters/Pairings: Ianto Jones
Warnings: N/A

Recced because: This is the first story in a series also called Innocence Bound. It is also an AU of the author's previous story, from the end of chapter 21, in which the deaging machine doesn't work.

I enjoy this story because it is fluffy (although some of the later stories in the series are darker). We get to see the youngest member of Torchwood behaving as a child, with all of the delights, aggravations and horrors that that involves.

And we get to see Tish, who is a Whoverse minor character whose story I would have enjoyed seeing continued (at least a little bit); here, you see how the Year That Never Was affected her and is still affecting her.

And, since Ianto's memories aren't gone, we get a paternal Jack who knows there's a pretty good chance he'll get his lover back, along with additional time (even if it is watching the child grow up.)

Essentially, this story puts a smile on my face.

Hello!  I am LibraryLover82, and I’ll be reccing this week.  I read a bit of everything, so I’ll be bringing you a mix of good stories from the Teaspoon archive.  I’m trying to vary the story length, as well as the characters.  I can’t completely avoid authors who have been recced before, so I’m not even going to try.  As far as I know, none of these stories have been recced here before.

Story: The Valiant Tales
Author: RobinC
Rating: Teen
Word Count:
3,200
Author's Summary: A series of drabbles about the people who lived, worked, and suffered on the Valiant during the Year That Never Was.

Characters/Pairings: Primarily Other characters, with appearances by the Tenth Doctor, The Master(Simm), Lucy Saxon, Tish Jones, Francine Jones, Jack Harkness
Warnings: Some explicit violence

Recced because: I’m going to start the week on an unusual note by
recommending a series.  Never fear; it is a series of drabbles, which makes the length about the same as a regular story.  This author can do more with 100 words than some people can do with 1,000.  These are portraits of people who were either forced to work on the Valiant, or who volunteered to work there, during the Year That Never Was.  In 100 words RobinC paints a picture of the best and worst of humanity, and illustrates just what a terrible year it was.  Some are surprising, some are shocking, some make me cry, and some make me proud to be a human.  They all make me think; is this what I would have done if I had been there?

Story: Girl Anachronism
Author: Willdew
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1292
Author's Summary: No more Lazarus. No more Harry. They're through with men; they shan't be tricked again.
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Leo Jones, Lucy Saxon, Martha Jones, Tish Jones
Warnings: Spoilers for the end of season 3, of course.

Recced because: Unconventional femmeslash is one of my most favoritest things to read, so a story with Tish/Lucy makes my heart sing with joy. The language is lovely, the characterization pitch-perfect, and it highlights a pairing there should definetly be more of in fandom. So, go and read!

Story: A Second Chance
Author: LondonBeauty
Rating: Adult - Explicit Sex, Swearing - Character Study, Het, Romance
Word Count: 9928
Characters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, Other Character(s), Tish Jones
Author's Summary: Having returned to a normal life after walking away from the Doctor, Martha finds her thoughts straying to another doctor. She just needs a little encouragement in the right direction.
Warnings: Explicit Sex, Swearing

Recced because: She had me at "Operation Stalk-a-Stud!" This was so much fun. I love the way LondonBeauty writes the relationships between Martha and Jack and Martha and Tish.

Story: Valiant
Author: MeiLin
Rating: adult
Word Count: 38,526
Author's Summary: The Story of the Year that Wasn't, from the viewpoints of almost everyone involved.
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Gwen Cooper, Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Jack Harkness, Leo Jones, Lucy Saxon, Martha Jones, Owen Harper, The Doctor (10th), The Master (Simm), Tish Jones, Toshiko Sato
Warnings: It's the Year that Wasn't, and it's not fluffy. It is long - but rewarding.
Recced because: Firstly, because MeiLin has written what might be the definitive exploration of the Year That Wasn't here. Secondly, because she is a master at taking minor characters in a greater drama and seeing them as they could be, then writing them into reality. Even more important, she makes those minor characters integral to the Whoniverse she explores and the stories they inhabit. Once you meet Shae Han, you'll see what I mean.
And with that, my week of recs is over. I had a blast doing it, (although I apologize for posting rather more slowly than I should have occasionally,) and I hope you enjoyed at least some of the stories I presented. Thanks!

Story: Sew it up, but you still see the tear
Author: [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3,852
Author's Summary:She's realized that she wants to build herself a new life, a bigger one, one that can fit people who aren't the last of the Time Lords. Martha Jones in the aftermath.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Tom Milligan, Clive Jones, Francine Jones, Tish Jones, Jack Harkness
Warnings: None

Recced because: This is one of the most beautiful Martha stories I've ever read. It's a look at who she became after The Year That Never Was, and the effect that year had on her family and their relationships with one another. The author also does a magnificent job of showing us how Martha ended up engaged to Tom and working for UNIT. This is the Martha Jones I know and love and this story is an absolutely gorgeous love-letter to the character. It's all the little details that make it so fantastic.

a small taste... )
nonelvis: (DW blue TARDIS)
[personal profile] nonelvis
Story: High Windows
Author: Paristani
Rating: Adult
Word Count: 963
Author's Summary: "I know some of you were sceptical about the relationship between the Soup Dragon and the Iron Chicken but it really is necessary that a series made for the posthuman era have that kind of emotional resonance and I just want to reassure you that I’ve allayed the concerns of those critics privately. We won’t be hearing from them again."
Characters/Pairings: Clive Jones, Martha Jones, The Master (Simm), Tish Jones
Warnings: Swearing

Recced because: Fair warning: this is one deeply twisted, disturbing story, and if you didn't already know the Master was a sick bastard, you will by the end of this fic. It's also got some of the blackest humor I've ever seen, so if the concept of "Master TV" appeals to you, this may be your kind of story. It manages to simultaneously horrify me and crack me up, which is pretty impressive for something less than 1,000 words long.

AU, taking place during "Last of the Time Lords," with Martha onboard the Valiant.

Story: Up Above, Down Below
Author: Aeshna ([livejournal.com profile] aeshna_uk)
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2389
Charcters/Pairings: Jack Harkness, Tish Jones
Author's Summary: And to think that she had once been excited about Mr. Saxon giving her a job.

recced because: This is one of those great "Fill-In-The-Blank" fics that, as the author details in her notes, takes on the premise that by the end of his time on The Valient Jack probably knew Tish Jones far longer and far better than her sister. This fic is a little slice of that relationship. Primarily a TW writer, Aeshna writes good, solid gen fic, a rare breed indeed! It was a struggle between reccing this crossover or one of her excellent TW fics, but in the end I went with the fic with the least attention. If you enjoy reading quiet slices of life that happens in between the flash and glitter, I think you'll enjoy this.
