Story: Greenwich Village (June 28, 1969)
Author: Biichan
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1153
Author's Summary: Jamie just wants to have a quiet drink. The Doctor knows more than he's letting on.
Characters/Pairings: Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Second Doctor/Jamie.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Two and Jamie are just absolutely spot-on. This was written for LGBT fest this year and I think Two and Jamie's reactions to the Stonewall riots are just superb. [livejournal.com profile] biichan has both their voices down perfectly and the Doctor trying to explain being gay and how it's different from the two of them is just not to be missed, plus it's incredibly, incredibly sweet.

(And that's me done for the week. Sorry to cram them all in at the last minute and I'm sorry my reasons for reccing weren't as well-thought out as usual. Hope you've checked them out and enjoyed them anyway! :))

Story: Sugar And Spice (And All Things Nice)
Author: Agapi42
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4418
Author's Summary: Spicy sweetness, Martha thought, and liked the sound of the words together.
Characters/Pairings: Martha/Romana, Martha Jones, Romana II, Romana III, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: This fic just makes me grin like a loon every time I read it. As a matter of fact, I think the first time I read it I bounced around my flat for an evening squeaking about the cute that is Martha/Romana, having fabulous adventures and being cooler than the Doctor. ;) I'm flicking through it again, trying to come up with more coherent reasons to read it but it's Martha and Romana, having adventures in time and space, it's really really lovely. :D

Author: Branwyn
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 325
Author's Summary: "Doctor," says Romana, "I have a feeling."
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: It's insanely INSANELY cute? With fabulous Four voice? And pitch-perfect Four/Romana interaction? Which are both really hard to get down? I think these are all valid reasons. Also, how I wish it were canon.

Story: Things To Do Before You Die
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1166
Author's Summary: "Take two pills, get a friend to whisk you off to another planet, and call me in the morning..." Tegan Jovanka lives. (Big Finish audios continuity)
Characters/Pairings: Nyssa, Tegan Jovanka.
Warnings: Spoilers for 'Caves of Androzani', 'The Gathering' and 'Circular Time'. Nothing major, if you're familiar with the basic plot summary of those you're fine.

Recced because: 'The Gathering' is quite a heart-breaking audio and this makes it ALL better? Yeah, that's my 'recced because', pretty much. This fic's just got lovely, lovely Tegan and Nyssa voice. I'm actually having a really hard time coming up with what to say, this fic manages to do so much with so few words, you get this perfect picture of what Tegan, Nyssa AND the Fifth Doctor's lives have all been like, both when they were together and after they parted ways, it's brilliant and if you're a Fivey fan this one's not to be missed. :D

Story: Last Breath Before The Fall
Author: Rivendellrose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 3003
Author's Summary: The night before she declares war on the Daleks, President Romana calls the Doctor home for counsel and companionship.
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Romana II.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I have to admit, I just had to rec this and 'Rebuilding' as a pair because they're inextricably linked in my mind. Both deal with where 'The Apocalypse Element' left Romana, but in such different ways and both are really lovely fics for it. This one's a rather gorgeous Eight/Romana, it fudges canon a bit to do it but the results are rather more than worth the fudge. I love putting these two side by side and seeing what Brax and the Doctor make of Romana in this situation.
[identity profile] silly-cleo.livejournal.com
(Um, sorry about the lack of recs this week. Life rather intervened, best laid plans of mice and men. Anyway, on with the show!)

Story: Rebuilding
Author: Lizbee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 937
Author's Summary: Following the Dalek invasion of Gallifrey, Braxiatel pays a visit to Romana.
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Braxiatel.
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I find that this fic encapsulates a lot of my ideas about Romana as President as well as the creepy (but awesome) of Braxiatel and Romana's relationship with same, it sticks in my mind and is really pretty much canon for me. A must if you're a fan of Romana, especially in the BF audio spin-offs.

Story: Six Impossible Things
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1249
Author's Summary: "My favourite impossible thing."
Characters/Pairings: Romana II/Donna
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I have to be honest, it's mostly got one of my very favourite kisses in fic, ever. Plus who doesn't need a "Journey's End" fix-it in their lives that features Donna/Romana II? I'm surprised one fic can even contain all the awesome, frankly.

Story: Second Fiddle
Author: LizBee
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1114
Author's Summary: It's a perfectly normal (that is to say, disastrous) day for the TARDIS crew, except that Martha finds she might be playing second fiddle. Again.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Romana II, Tenth Doctor, Leela, Martha/Romana, Romana/Leela
Warnings: None

Recced because: I've been resisting reccing this one for ages and I really don't know why. It's possibly the first Classic Who fic I ever read yet I keep coming back to it again and again and it always makes me happy. It's actually partly responsible for how much I adore Romana II and it has wonderful Martha voice. I suppose I'm reccing this one for the same reason I've recced a lot of others this week, it has several lines that you come across and every time you just think "...Yes, exactly" and that, to me, is marvelous and a big part of what a good fic ought to do. I dunno. It has Romana/Martha AND Romana/Leela, ALL IN ONE FIC. What more could you want, except for it to be longer?

Anyway, that's all from me. I've had a lovely time reccing this week, sorry again for being a bit inconsistent!

Story: From Monte Carlo, With Love
Author: livii
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2254
Author's Summary: The quest is the quest. Throw in a couple of pirate hats, and stir.
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Hex Schoffield, Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Jake Simmonds, Ace/Hex, Rose/Mickey/Jake, there's some other mixes as well, like a bit of Rose/Ace.
Warnings: None

Recced because: I ALMOST feel bad reccing something of [livejournal.com profile] livii's because her stuff is so uniformly good it speaks for itself but this one is just so much fun. I love the glimpse into what Rose and Mickey and Jake got up to and what they were like together in the alt!verse. I love the similarities drawn between Rose/Mickey/Jake and Ace/Hex because to me at least, Ace and Rose are quite similar, as are their relationships with the men in the fic and that really works well, I think. They're just a really good pairing and threesome to throw together, they've got a lot in common and they snark so well. To top it all of, they're thrown together in a very fun, caper-ish type adventure thing with silly costumes! Don't be put off if you haven't met Hex before, [livejournal.com profile] livii has his voice and his relationship with Ace down really well so you could arguably use this fic to work out whether you might like him or not!

And have an excerpt. )

Story: Like Ships That Crash In The Night
Author: tangerine
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1526
Author's Summary: From a deep sleep Jo slowly became aware that someone was shaking her by the shoulders.
"Jo, you have to get up, there's some bloke at the door wants to see you. Funny old-fashioned coat, says he's the Doctor."
Characters/Pairings: Eighth Doctor, Jo Grant
Warnings: None

Recced because: The Eight Doctor needed cheering up during the Time War...so he went to visit Jo. I feel that should say it all right there, really. These two work fantastically well together and the author has their voices down pat, I think. Wonderfully captures Jo, her relationship with Three and Eight's view of same. The wibbley wobbley timey wimey aspect is really well played too. It's also heaps of fun to get a glimpse into Jo's life AWAY from UNIT and the Doctor. I don't know whether I ought to say this or not but there is the odd typo. It's nothing major that a quick beta wouldn't fix and they're so SO well worth ignoring.

Story: Looked Up in Perfect Silence at the Stars
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1978
Author's Summary: “If he’d left me on Earth,” Sarah said, “if he’d had time to take me home, like he’d meant to, before he got dragged back here… everything would have been different. My whole life.” Sarah in the Time War.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, Romana II
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I appear to have a theme for the week, namely the Time War. I don't really know what to say about this one, the author's summary says it all for me. What if Sarah Jane had been on Gallifrey during the Time War? This fic is your answer and it's fabulous. Like the others I've recced this week, lines and ideas from this continue to knock around my brain months after I first read it and in my book at least, I think that counts for something. I'm sorry to have so little to say but I don't want to give too much away about this one. Please check it out. Oh, I know. I'll let the fic do the talking for me.

Story: Seconds Ticking
Author: Biichan
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 908
Author's Summary: Of course they had a back-up plan. No one said that it was sensible.
Characters/Pairings: Leela, Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, K-9, Romana II, Braxiatel, Narvin, Jackie Tyler, Rose Tyler, Pete Tyler
Warnings: None.

Recced because: I love pocket-watch stories and I love Big Finish and this story manages to combine the two fantastically. Awesome, awesome theory and it's incredible how many good lines are packed in to so few words. I really sort of wish this were canon. Everyone's voice sounds just right, especially Leela's. This one's a must if you like the Big Finish series Gallifrey but is still heaps of fun even if you're not familiar with it, I think.

Story: The Heart Is an Open System
Author: Astrogirl
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2293
Author's Summary: Tegan demonstrates that Companion Emo is not exclusively a new series phenomenon. Fortunately, Nyssa's an excellent shoulder to cry on.
Characters/Pairings: Tegan, Nyssa
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Simply a lovely character study of Tegan, Nyssa, their relationship AND both their relationships with the Doctor. I can so easily picture this happening in the background of Five-era and it delights me to do so. I love this one because so much happened to the 5th Doctor and his companions and of course none of it's ever discussed. Which is what fic is for and this one does it gorgeously.

Story: had we but world enough, and time
Author: VegaOfTheLyre
Rating: PG 13/Teen
Word Count: 3388
Author's Summary: It’s the beginning of the end, and the Doctor can feel the anticipation of the impending battle drum so deep through his bones his teeth rattle with it. Romana and the Doctor at Gallifrey’s last stand.
Characters/Pairings: Eight Doctor, Romana III (not the EDA one), sort of Eight/Romana? It's not stated out loud but it's definitely there.
Warnings: ANGST. Time War shaped ANGST.

Recced because: The ANGST. Ok, wait, seriously. I forgot I was supposed to start reccing this week and I actually haven't read any fic in ages so after a couple of minutes of panicking I realised this could actually be a good thing, I'd see what I could remember off the top of my head. If I'd remembered it that long, it was bound to be exceptional, right?

This was one of the first fics that came to mind. It's mostly all about the beautiful imagery and the numerous nods to all the spin-off media, each one I found made me so very happy. The author also does a gorgeous job of showing us the Doctor and Romana's relationship throughout their various reincarnations, their shared history and affection for each other is palpable. This Romana III is great too, she's a tantalizing look at what the EDAs COULD've done with the War Queen stuff.

I feel like I'm doing a bad job of selling this but essentially, for me this is what Time War Eight and Romana look like and it's rather lovely and you should definitely check it out.

Story: The Choice
Author: jinxed_wood
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 1298
Author's Summary: [Highlander Crossover] For a moment, as he took the boy’s head, it seemed that the heavens were ripped open, and Methos, through the howling, bleeding pain of the quickening, was almost sure he'd seen something on the other side...
Characters/Pairings: Romana II, Methos (from Highlander)
Warnings: It's a bit sad?

Recced because: I will cheerfully admit I've never seen any Highlander of any form ever but I still love this fic. It's so simple. Romana meets Methos, presumably after the Time War and it's really rather sad and lovely. They go well together. Their reactions to each other are great and her sadness over the Time War is palpable. (Sadly, I fail at planning a little and decided to pile on all my vaguely angsty recs to coincide with the finale.)

I imagine you would get even more out of it than I have if you are familiar with Highlander.

Anyway, that's me done for the week. It's been an absolute pleasure reccing to you all! :)

Story: The Bits With Daleks
Author: Ninamazing
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 863
Author's Summary: She built four different kinds of vortex manipulator, then took the circuits apart and turned it all into a device for producing perfectly browned toast — which, if she thought about it, really seemed like something the Doctor might do.
Characters/Pairings: Fourth Doctor, Romana II
Warnings: Again, none given.

Recced because: This is set right after 'Destiny of the Daleks' and it's a short look at what Romana might have been feeling after her various experiences with Daleks in that episode and it's rather lovely. Her reactions are, imho, completely in character. This is just a reallly nice little character introspection and also some very well done hurt/comfort. Some of the imagery used is gorgeous and I really feel that if Romana were to freak out over anything, it'd look an awful lot like this.

Story: The Almost Last of the Time Lords Benevolent Society
Author: Netgirl_y2k
Rating: All ages.
Word Count: 1149
Author's Summary: Sometimes I think that the universe never used to be this silly. Then I remember that, no, it was exactly this silly.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Romana II, Martha/Romana
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: Since I promised to rec Romana fic I thought I'd actually better get on that then. I almost didn't rec this one because I think it's quite well known but then I thought there might be some poor souls out there who didn't know about it and I felt so bad for them I thought I better rec it anyway. There isn't, as far as I know, any canon logic behind Martha/Romana but it is a terribly fun pairing and you get to see some very fun dialogue between them, which this fic delivers in spades. This fic basically just entails a few glimpses into what Martha and Romana running around time and space together would look like and it looks like a whole lot of fun. Netgirl is as funny as she always is and both characters are spot on. Plus there's a little bit of Doctor mocking in there which can be lots of good fun.

Short snippet, just for fun. It was very hard to pick just one bit though! )

Story: The Polar Bears' Golf Club
Author: Doyle
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 4543
Author's Summary: 40th century Echlin has one of the most famous centres of time travel research in the galaxy. Rose and Ace have some nitro-9, a bronze medal in gymnastics (under-7s category) and a couple of really enormous false moustaches. No contest, really...
Characters/Pairings: Ace McShane, Rose Tyler
Warnings: None given. (This is becoming a trend...)

Recced because: It's FUNNY. Rose and Ace, if you think about it, would be FANTASTIC a team and this fic showcases exactly that. There's cross-dressing, ridiculous plans, the inevitable Doctor comparing, "Lots of planets have a Scotland", there just isn't any bad. This fic is really all about the hilarious exchanges between Ace and Rose as they try to rescue their respective Doctors. Look, there's not really a lot more I need to say about this fic beyond it's very very funny so here, have a snippet again.

Rose and Ace show off their amazing planning skillz. )

...Did I mention the funny? Everyone needs a good laugh midweek!

Story: Doctor Who And The Rambaldi Enigma
Author: Rheanna
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 19651
Author's Summary: Retrieving a Rambaldi artefact from the Vatican's vaults is all in a day's work for Sydney Bristow -- until she finds herself transported to fifteenth century Rome. All Sydney wants is to get home, but she's not the only time traveller with an interest in the mysterious Signor Rambaldi...
Characters/Pairings: Third Doctor, Delgado!Master, Sydney Bristow
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: Mostly recced because good crossovers are hard to come by and this one is excellent. The first time I read it I only knew the Alias half, not having seen any Classic Who yet so I know it stands up if you only have a passing familiarity with Doctor Who.

Now that I AM familiar with the Third Doctor, I'm sitting here laughing out loud at how well Rheanna's written him and his relationship with the Master. This fic could have been an episode of the show, it's brilliant. As far as I'm concerned, it IS canon for both shows.

I'm re-reading it now and so far the author's doing a fantastic job of making the Alias characters accessible if you're not familiar with that show.

Mostly recced because how can you resist a fic with this great a sense of humour?

Very small snippet under the cut. )

Story: Four Times Martha Met Sarah Jane And One Time She Didn't Quite
Author: Wojelah
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2405
Author's Summary: The first time Martha Jones meets Sarah Jane Smith, neither of them knows it. To be fair, Martha's just survived near-asphyxiation on the Moon and Tish is fussing and there's a thousand reporters everywhere, and Sarah Jane's really more interested in the odd puncture wounds on Mr. Stoker's neck and inclined to avoid anyone who might shoo her away - which is to say, they both have rather a lot on their minds.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None given.

Recced because: I know I'm not the only person here who LOVES a good 'Year That Never Was' fic and this is one of my favourites. I'm also a sucker for companions meeting each other and this one's fantastic and completely plausible for that, too. As a matter of fact, given 'Turn Left' this fic just became even more plausible. Sarah Jane and Martha are both spot on and Wojelah makes FANTASTIC use of a sometimes tired trope, the Five Things and it's just brilliant, really. Each situation could slot easily into canon unless 'The Stolen Earth' has Russelled/Jossed it somehow.
[identity profile] silly-cleo.livejournal.com
Story: Object Impermanence
Author: Ponygirl
Rating: None given
Author's summary: Nothing lasts forever. A coda to Big Finish #91: Circular Time - Autumn, by Paul Cornell.
Characters/Pairings: Fifth Doctor, Nyssa
Warnings: None given and having just re-read it I can't think of any offhand.
Word Count: 2,256

Recced because: There isn't enough good Nyssa fic in the world (unless it's all hiding from me) and this is possibly my very favourite. Please don't be put off by the fact it's tied to one of her audios, I do think it can stand on its own. Ponygirl, whether intentionally or not, has managed to put all the major points of the audio into the fic so I think it's quite easy to follow. And obviously, if you've heard Circular Time and enjoyed it, this fic is a must. It continues on from part 3 of that audio in being a lovely look at Nyssa and her grief for her whole people and planet, something the show doesn't really go into at all. Five and Nyssa are absolutely spot on in it and given the new series, the irony of the Doctor comforting someone else on the loss of their entire planet probably isn't lost on anyone.
