Story: Surprises
Author: Selena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1749
Author's Summary: Five times Jo Grant surprised the Doctor.
Characters/Pairings: Jo Grant, The Doctor (3rd)
Warnings: none

Recced because: First, this story was recced previously, in around April 2009. However, since the original reccer's LJ and posts to this comm were deleted, I received the go-ahead to select this fic again. It focuses on the relationship between the Doctor and Jo, an underrated companion in my opinion. The author gets her voice just right and highlights her best qualities. While the first four sections are set during the Third Doctor era, the final part features a bittersweet time jump with an older Jo who remains perfectly in character.

Story: Game, Set and Match
Author: Selena
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 2256
Author's Summary: The Master finds himself resurrected by Servalan. She’s not amused. Crossover with Blake's 7.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (Simm)
Warnings: None

Recced because: There are plenty of examples of crossovers that plunge the Doctor or his companions into another fandom. It's much rarer to find a story that puts together villains from two fandoms. When the author is the immensely talented Selena, one of the villains is the Master, and the other is the beautiful but deadly Servalan, sparks are sure to fly...

Story: Once upon a time
Author: Selena
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1615
Author's Summary: Five degrees of separation between Peter Petrelli and Martha Jones. What the Heroes cast did during The Year That Wasn't. Crossover with Heroes. Spoilers for the second season of Heroes.
Characters/Pairings: Martha Jones
Warnings: None
Recced because: I like crossovers, I like Selena's writing, and I'm a sucker for stories about the Year That Wasn't. This is all three.

Story: Consanguinitas
Author: Selena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2800
Author's Summary: Five glimpses at Alice and her father.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter, Jack Harkness
Warnings: no warnings, but spoilers through Day Three of Children of Earth

Recced because: Everybody has an opinion about Children of Earth, but a few special stories have forgone their authors' opinions and simply worked with the beautiful characters introduced there. Consanguinitas is at the top of my list. It's a series of interactions between Alice and her father at different points in her life, and it paints a vivid, haunting character portrait of Jack Harkness.

It's Crossover Week at Calufrax!

Story: Brief Encounter
Author: Selena
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 553
Author's summary: The Doctor intervenes in the Earth/Minbari war. Crossover with Babylon 5.
Characters/Pairings: Seventh Doctor, Delenn
Warnings: Spoilers for parts of the backstory of Babylon Five. Takes place during In The Beginning.

Recced because: This fic goes to show that you don't need tens of thousands of words for an effective crossover. Sometimes you can do it in five-hundred. Selena's Seven voice is pitch-perfect--I could hear him speak his dialogue--and her Delenn is even better, if that's possible. Both pacing and mood are very well sustained. Everything fits seamlessly. You can feel the affection for both shows between every line.

She asked him whether he was a spy. "Not really," he said. "Though I could tell you about Earth. All about Earth, in fact, which you might want to know. Given that you're about to destroy the planet. Rather a pity; they make excellent tea, and no one has ever rivalled their umbrellas, either."

Most of my recs this week will be crossovers; this one isn't, not exactly, although it includes elements of two shows from the Doctor Who universe:

Story: Cause and Effect
Author: Selena
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1956
Author's Summary: Luke isn’t quite sure of how to handle his rescue. How did the Doctor know when to save him?
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Luke Smith, Mr. Smith, Other Character(s), Rani Chandra, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None

Spoilers for The End of Time and episodes of The Sarah-Jane Adventures

Recced because: Most people would just be grateful if the Doctor saved their lives. Luke worries about it, in a wonderful display of existential angst and dawning apprehension. The story is simply a beautiful character study in which Luke gradually realises that his rescue could be a very bad thing, compares his rescue to the many deaths that the Doctor didn't prevent, and tries to work out how he can still be alive without damaging the timeline.

Story: Consanguinitas
Author: Selena / [livejournal.com profile] selenak
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 2,800
Author's Summary: Five glimpses at Alice and her father.
Characters/Pairings: Alice Carter, Other Characters
Warnings: Spoilers through Day Three of Children of Earth.

Recced because: If you haven't seen Children of Earth and you don't know who Alice Carter is, then this fic isn't for you as it contains spoilers. If you have seen CoE -- and you found Alice to be as intriguing as I did -- then this is the perfect fic to read. It's a fine character study of Alice (and her father, too) captured in five scenes from her life. It's well-executed and when you read it, you can't help but think that this is exactly how Alice grew up.

Story: Nowhere Man
Author: [livejournal.com profile] selenak
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 6983
Author's summary: During the year that wasn’t, Torchwood tries to save the day. Elim Garak just tries to survive. Crossover with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Doctor Who.
Characters/Pairings: Torchwood cast, the Doctor, the Master, Elim Garak
Warnings: Character deaths

Recommended because: Selena's a brilliant writer. She's actually a professional novelist in her native Germany, but she wields the English language better than most native speakers. This triple crossover displays the depth of her skill. You might look at the fandoms and think "crack," but it's not--she makes it work as a serious story, full of plot and character exploration. Even if you don't know a thing about DS9 except it's got those aliens with the funny foreheads--no, the other aliens with the funny foreheads--the story still stands on its own. Plus, nobody, but nobody, writes a better Owen.
