And now, time for a slight change of pace...

Story: Arrival
Author: Joseph Q Publique
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 104
Author's Summary: Every new adventure has a beginning.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (unspecified)
Warnings: None

Recced because: In just a handful of words, the author sets a magnificent, deliciously creepy scene. It left me hungry for more; hopefully, it will have the same effect on you. This is an author who, strangely, has not been recced before. I'm happy to fix that, because there's a lot to enjoy.

Story: The Enmity of Ages
Author: Forge
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 1,718
Author's Summary: A battle that has stretched across time. From childhood games, to burning planets, to the Immortality Gate. The never-ending conflict between the Doctor and his oldest enemy.
Characters/Pairings: The Master (unspecified), the Doctor (unspecified)
Warnings: None

Recced because: I can't think of a word to say that would sell this one. It's just...good. Very damn good. We'll let it speak for itself.

Story: memento mori
Author: cosmickitten
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 77
Author's Summary: The ancient god, and his reminders of death.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor
Warnings: N/A

Recced because:

It is difficult to write effective poetry, and I think that difficulty is probably magnified when you're writing fic and poetry together. This short bit of verse is not only effective, it is also incredibly affecting. The Doctor needs his companions. They are special to him. They are, after a thousand years, the only mystery worth solving.

I'm back! And I come bearing gifts!

Story: Lies Told to Children
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 1274
Author's Summary: The Doctor explains why he travels with humans, or possibly just spins a tale.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, unspecified Doctor

Recced because: I thought I'd start off the week with the Doctor who started it all, and when it comes to First Doctor fics, nothing compares to this one. It's gorgeously written, deeply affecting, and just so goddamn smart. On one hand, the lies of the title refer to the xenophobia taught both consciously and unconsciously to the children of Gallifrey (a goldmine of a subject that far too few authors tap). On the other hand, the Doctor tells the story of his moral evolution and changing attitude towards humans by using the framework of a fairy tale--and a metaphor is a kind of lie as well. The way this story compares and contrasts these two kinds of lies, all through the lens of the Doctor struggling to understand what makes someone a good person--and more importantly, what makes someone a person at all--will leave you with the most wonderful combination of heartache, warm fuzzies, and geeky glee.

Excerpt:

This is false from beginning to end, of course. But there's more than one kind of lie. There are lies like the notion that electrons go around atoms in sedate planetary orbits: false but useful, good for making pictures in your head. And then there are the other kind.

You'll have to decide for yourself which sort this is. Imagine--

Imagine that you were born in a fairy-tale kingdom that shines like a diamond. Imagine you grew up there. And imagine that every day, in a thousand tiny ways, that kingdom whispered, we are the only real, true people in the world.

Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] avarill and am offering recommendations this week.

Story: Sexy Dresses
Author: lyricwritesprose
Rating: G
Word Count: 1273
Author's Summary: There is a reason why the Doctor has never had all that much luck repairing the chameleon circuit.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (1st), The Doctor (unspecified), Susan Foreman and The TARDIS.

Recced because:

After The Doctor's Wife I can't get enough of good TARDIS-pov fic, and this is one of the best I've read. Lyricwritesprose perfectly captures the TARDIS's voice, as portrayed by Idris.

Tomorrow I'll resume reccing the fics I originally planned to rec this week, but before I do, I have one quick "bonus" rec that seems particularly appropriate to share right now -- a short (144-word) poem about Sarah Jane:

Story: She Was Always
Author: Primsong
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 144
Author's Summary: The Doctor does not often lend himself to poetry, but then, there isn't often someone quite this special.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith, the Doctor
Warnings: Might make you cry.

Recced because: Primsong is one of those talented authors who can write good fanfic and good poetry. I've always thought this poem was gorgeous, but now with the loss of Lis Sladen, it's become especially poignant.

Story: Love Hurts (Like Falling Off a Radio Tower)
Author: Erya
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 482
Author's Summary:
We receive a demonstration of Gallifreyan mating rituals.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor (unspecified), The Master (other)
Warnings: None

Recced because: It's sweet and funny, and is a little bit fourth-wall-breaking in the way the Master talks about the two of them. Sorry this rec is so late at night, my computer has been throwing a hissy fit.

Story: Does the Doctor Know Where His Towel Is?
Author: AstroGirl
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 623
Author's Summary: Nowhere in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's entry on the Doctor is there any mention of towels. This fact has more significant consequences than you might imagine.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor, The Guide
Warnings: None.

Recced because: Clearly a short fic was needed to give people chance to catch up on some of the previous days’ historical epics. This is a wonderful crossover piece on the Doctor’s entry to the legendary Hitch Hiker’s Guide. I can actually hear it when I read it, it’s so pitch perfect – which should be all the recommendation anyone needs. More, please!

Title: Man in the Blue Box
Author: Cryptile
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 616
Author's Summary: A fairy tale. Possibly.
Characters/Pairings: Unspecified Doctor, unspecified companions
Warnings: None

Recced because: I decided to wrap up this week with a fic that's about the threads that tie together all the Doctors, about his fundamental nature. I love stories that take the form of fairy tales, and this one is pitch-perfect, its words all fey and beautiful. The ending may make you tear up a little.

Story: Dancing on the Head of a Pin
Author: Whovian42
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 603
Author's Summary:
A prose-y day in the life of the Doctor in sudden short story form.

Characters/Pairings: Unspecified Doctor and Companion
Warnings: None

Recced because: Today’s selection proves the adage that good things come in small packages.  This is a lovely portrayal of the nature of the relationship between the Doctor and a companion.  The author doesn’t really specify which doctor or companion, so you are free to insert the pair of your choice.  I like one of the lines in this so much I added it as a favorite quote on my Facebook page.  See if you can guess which line!

I've decided to end my week on a lighter note. You know comfort food? Well, this is comfort fic, and it always puts a smile on my face when I'm blue. Love Hurts is another Doctor/Master slash-up, but it's probably the funniest (and truest) diagnosis of their U.S.T. (acronym explained in fic) I've ever read. Enjoy!

It's been fun being your reccer, and I hope to do it again some time. Heaven knows I've got more fics in my favourites chest.

Story: A Kinder Cartography
Author: Noldo
Rating: All Ages
Author's summary: A map of the world in names; the Doctor and his companions.
Characters/Pairings: The Doctor
Warnings: only if you need to be warned for metaphors and stylistic writing

Recced because: This fic is awesome. Period. It's an elliptical meditation by the Doctor on his companions, told in the extended metaphor of companions as landmarks on the map of his mind. It's seven-hundred-odd words of absolutely gorgeous prose and it rings absolutely true.

If you only read one of the fics I rec this week, please read this one.
